A comprehensive solution for bus frame design is proposed to bridge multi-material topology optimization and cross-sectional size optimization. Three types of variables (material, topology and size) and two types of constraints (static stiffness and frequencies) are considered to promote this practical design. For multi-material topology optimization, an ordered solid isotropic material with penalization interpolation is used to transform the multi-material selection problem into a pure topology optimization problem, without introducing new design variables. Then, based on the previously optimal topology result, cross-sectional sizes of the bus frame are optimized to further seek the least mass. Sequential linear programming is preferred to solve the two structural optimization problems. Finally, an engineering example verifies the effectiveness of the presented method, which bridges the gap between topology optimization and size optimization, and achieves a more lightweight bus frame than traditional single-material topology optimization.  相似文献

Conductive heat transfer plays an important role in dissipating thermal energy to achieve lower operating temperatures in various devices. Topology optimization has the potential to provide efficient structural solutions for such devices. The traditional topology optimization approach considers a single material. Adding additional materials with unique properties not only can expand the design options but also may improve the structural performance of the final structure. In this work, a multi-resolution topology optimization approach is employed to design multi-material structures for efficient heat dissipation. The implementation blends an efficient multi-resolution approach to obtain high-resolution designs with an alternating active phase algorithm to handle multi-material giving greater design flexibility. It solves the steady-state heat equation using finite element analysis and iteratively minimizes thermal compliance (maximizes conductivity). Several examples are presented to show the efficacy of the numerical implementation, which involves benchmark problems. Results indicate good prospects when quantitatively compared with single-material structures.  相似文献

Transient heat conduction analysis involves extensive computational cost. It becomes more serious for multi-material topology optimization, in which many design variables are involved and hundreds of iterations are usually required for convergence. This article aims to provide an efficient quadratic approximation for multi-material topology optimization of transient heat conduction problems. Reciprocal-type variables, instead of relative densities, are introduced as design variables. The sequential quadratic programming approach with explicit Hessians can be utilized as the optimizer for the computationally demanding optimization problem, by setting up a sequence of quadratic programs, in which the thermal compliance and weight can be explicitly approximated by the first and second order Taylor series expansion in terms of design variables. Numerical examples show clearly that the present approach can achieve better performance in terms of computational efficiency and iteration number than the solid isotropic material with penalization method solved by the commonly used method of moving asymptotes. In addition, a more lightweight design can be achieved by using multi-phase materials for the transient heat conductive problem, which demonstrates the necessity for multi-material topology optimization.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the development of an efficient reliability-based design optimization algorithm for solving problems posed on uncertain linear dynamic systems characterized by large design variable vectors and driven by non-stationary stochastic excitation. The interest in such problems lies in the desire to define a new generation of tools that can efficiently solve practical problems, such as the design of high-rise buildings in seismic zones, characterized by numerous free parameters in a rigorously probabilistic setting. To this end a novel decoupling approach is developed based on defining and solving a limited sequence of deterministic optimization sub-problems. In particular, each sub-problem is formulated from information pertaining to a single simulation carried out exclusively in the current design point. This characteristic drastically limits the number of simulations necessary to find a solution to the original problem while making the proposed approach practically insensitive to the size of the design variable vector. To demonstrate the efficiency and strong convergence properties of the proposed approach, the structural system of a high-rise building defined by over three hundred free parameters is optimized under non-stationary stochastic earthquake excitation.  相似文献

Multilevel redundancy allocation optimization problems (MRAOPs) occur frequently when attempting to maximize the system reliability of a hierarchical system, and almost all complex engineering systems are hierarchical. Despite their practical significance, limited research has been done concerning the solving of simple MRAOPs. These problems are not only NP hard but also involve hierarchical design variables. Genetic algorithms (GAs) have been applied in solving MRAOPs, since they are computationally efficient in solving such problems, unlike exact methods, but their applications has been confined to single-objective formulation of MRAOPs. This paper proposes a multi-objective formulation of MRAOPs and a methodology for solving such problems. In this methodology, a hierarchical GA framework for multi-objective optimization is proposed by introducing hierarchical genotype encoding for design variables. In addition, we implement the proposed approach by integrating the hierarchical genotype encoding scheme with two popular multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs)—the strength Pareto evolutionary genetic algorithm (SPEA2) and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). In the provided numerical examples, the proposed multi-objective hierarchical approach is applied to solve two hierarchical MRAOPs, a 4- and a 3-level problems. The proposed method is compared with a single-objective optimization method that uses a hierarchical genetic algorithm (HGA), also applied to solve the 3- and 4-level problems. The results show that a multi-objective hierarchical GA (MOHGA) that includes elitism and mechanism for diversity preserving performed better than a single-objective GA that only uses elitism, when solving large-scale MRAOPs. Additionally, the experimental results show that the proposed method with NSGA-II outperformed the proposed method with SPEA2 in finding useful Pareto optimal solution sets.  相似文献

This article presents a methodology and process for a combined wing configuration partial topology and structure size optimization. It is aimed at achieving a minimum structural weight by optimizing the structure layout and structural component size simultaneously. This design optimization process contains two types of design variables and hence was divided into two sub-problems. One is structure layout topology to obtain an optimal number and location of spars with discrete integer design variables. Another is component size optimization with continuous design variables in the structure FE model. A multi city-layer ant colony optimization (MCLACO) method is proposed and applied to the topology sub-problem. A gradient based optimization method (GBOM) built in the MSC.NASTRAN SOL-200 module was employed in the component size optimization sub-problem. For each selected layout of the wing structure, a size optimization process is performed to obtain the optimum result and feedback to the layout topology process. The numerical example shows that the proposed MCLACO method and a combination with the GBOM are effective for solving such a wing structure optimization problem. The results also indicate that significant structural weight saving can be achieved.

In this study, we deal with a numerical solution based on time evolution equations to solve the optimization problem for finding the shape that minimizes the objective function under given constraints. The design variables of the shape optimization problem are defined on a given original domain on which the boundary value problems of partial differential equations are defined. The variations of the domain are obtained by the time integration of the solution to derive the time evolution equations defined in the original domain. The shape gradient with respect to the domain variations are given as the Neumann boundary condition defined on the original domain boundary. When the constraints are satisfied, the decreasing property of the objective function is guaranteed by the proposed method. Furthermore, the proposed method is used to minimize the heat resistance under a total volume constraint and to solve the minimization problem of mean compliance under a total volume constraint.  相似文献

A super singular wedge tip element whose stiffness matrix is based on numerical eigensolutions is incorporated into standard hybrid-stress finite elements to study singular stress fields around the vertex of anisotropic multi-material wedge. The numerical eigensolutions are obtained by an ad hoc finite element eigenanalysis method. To demonstrate the validity of the method, singular stresses for some typical anisotropic single-material/bimaterial wedges are investigated. All numerical results show present finite element method converges rapidly to available solutions with few elements. The present method is applicable to dealing with the problems with more complex geometries.  相似文献

This article proposes an uncertain multi-objective multidisciplinary design optimization methodology, which employs the interval model to represent the uncertainties of uncertain-but-bounded parameters. The interval number programming method is applied to transform each uncertain objective function into two deterministic objective functions, and a satisfaction degree of intervals is used to convert both the uncertain inequality and equality constraints to deterministic inequality constraints. In doing so, an unconstrained deterministic optimization problem will be constructed in association with the penalty function method. The design will be finally formulated as a nested three-loop optimization, a class of highly challenging problems in the area of engineering design optimization. An advanced hierarchical optimization scheme is developed to solve the proposed optimization problem based on the multidisciplinary feasible strategy, which is a well-studied method able to reduce the dimensions of multidisciplinary design optimization problems by using the design variables as independent optimization variables. In the hierarchical optimization system, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, sequential quadratic programming method and Gauss–Seidel iterative approach are applied to the outer, middle and inner loops of the optimization problem, respectively. Typical numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a hierarchical optimization method for finding feasible true 0–1 solutions to finite‐element‐based topology design problems. The topology design problems are initially modelled as non‐convex mixed 0–1 programs. The hierarchical optimization method is applied to the problem of minimizing the weight of a structure subject to displacement and local design‐dependent stress constraints. The method iteratively treats a sequence of problems of increasing size of the same type as the original problem. The problems are defined on a design mesh which is initially coarse and then successively refined as needed. At each level of design mesh refinement, a neighbourhood optimization method is used to treat the problem considered. The non‐convex topology design problems are equivalently reformulated as convex all‐quadratic mixed 0–1 programs. This reformulation enables the use of methods from global optimization, which have only recently become available, for solving the problems in the sequence. Numerical examples of topology design problems of continuum structures with local stress and displacement constraints are presented. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study proposes particle swarm optimization (PSO) based algorithms to solve multi-objective engineering optimization problems involving continuous, discrete and/or mixed design variables. The original PSO algorithm is modified to include dynamic maximum velocity function and bounce method to enhance the computational efficiency and solution accuracy. The algorithm uses a closest discrete approach (CDA) to solve optimization problems with discrete design variables. A modified game theory (MGT) approach, coupled with the modified PSO, is used to solve multi-objective optimization problems. A dynamic penalty function is used to handle constraints in the optimization problem. The methodologies proposed are illustrated by several engineering applications and the results obtained are compared with those reported in the literature.  相似文献

Graded surfaces widely exist in natural structures and inspire engineers to apply functionally graded (FG) materials to cover structural surfaces for performance improvement, protection, or other special functionalities. However, how to design such structures with FG surfaces by topology optimization is a quite challenging problem due to the difficulty for determining material properties of structural surfaces with prescribed variation rule. This paper presents a novel projection-based method for topology optimization of this class of FG structures. Firstly, a projection process is proposed for ensuring the material properties of the surfaces vary with a prescribed function. A criterion of determining the values of parameters in projection process is given by a strict theoretical derivation, and then, a new interpolation function is established, which is capable of simultaneously obtaining clear substrate topologies and realizable FG surfaces. Though such structures are actually multimaterial gradient structures, only the design variables of single-material topology optimization problem are needed. In the current research, the classical compliance minimization problem with a mass constraint is considered and the robust formulation is used to control the length scale of substrates. Several 2D and 3D numerical examples illustrate the validity and applicability of the proposed method.  相似文献

A practical and efficient optimization method for the rational design of large, highly constrained complex systems is presented. The design of such systems is iterative and requires the repeated formulation and solution of an analysis model, followed by the formulation and solution of a redesign model. The latter constitutes an optimization problem. The versatility and efficiency of the method for solving the optimization problem is of fundamental importance for a successful implementation of any rational design procedure.

In this paper, a method is presented for solving optimization problems formulated in terms of continuous design variables. The objective function may be linear or non-linear, single or multiple. The constraints may be any mix of linear or non-linear functions, and these may be any mix of inequalities and equalities. These features permit the solution of a wide spectrum of optimization problems, ranging from the standard linear and non-linear problems to a non-linear problem with multiple objective functions (goal programming). The algorithm for implementing the method is presented in sufficient detail so that a computer program, in any computing language, can be written.  相似文献

This article presents a numerical approach of topology optimization with multiple materials for the heat conduction problem. The multiphase level set model is used to implicitly describe the geometric boundaries of material regions with different conductivities. The model of multi-material representation has no emergence of the intermediate density. The optimization objective is to construct the optimal heat conductive paths which improve the efficiency of heat transfer. The dissipation of thermal transport potential capacity is taken as the objective function. The sensitivity analysis is implemented by the adjoint variable method, which is the foundation of constructing the velocity field of the level set equation. The optimal result is gradually realized by the evolution of multi-material boundaries, and the topological changes are naturally handled during the optimization process. Finally, the numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed method for topology optimization of the heat conduction problem.  相似文献

Currently, automotive bodies are constructed usually using a single material, e.g. steel or aluminum. Compared to single-material automotive bodies, multi-material automotive bodies allow optimal material selection in each structural component for higher product performance and lower cost. This paper presents novel material performance indices and procedures developed to guide systematic material selection for multi-material automotive bodies. These new indices enable to characterize the crashworthiness performance of complex-shaped thin-walled beams in multi-material automotive bodies according to material types. This paper also illustrates the application of these performance indices and procedures by designing a lightweight multi-material automotive body. These procedures will help to design a lightweight and affordable body favored by the automotive industry, thus to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.  相似文献

A typical reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) problem is usually formulated as a stochastic optimization model where the performance of a system is optimized with the reliability requirements being satisfied. Most existing RBDO methods divide the problem into two sub-problems: one relates to reliability analysis, the other relates to optimization. Traditional approaches nest the two sub-problems with the reliability analysis as the inner loop and the optimization as the outer loop. Such nested approaches face the challenge of prohibitive computational expense that drives recent research focusing on decoupling the two loops or even fundamentally transforming the two-loop structure into one deterministic optimization problem. While promising, the potential issue in these computationally efficient approaches is the lowered accuracy. In this paper, a new decoupled approach, which performs the two loops sequentially, is proposed. First, a deterministic optimization problem is solved to locate the means of the uncertain design variables. After the mean values are determined, the reliability analysis is performed. A new deterministic optimization problem is then restructured with a penalty added to each limit-state function to improve the solution iteratively. Most existing research on decoupled approaches linearizes the limit-state functions or introduces the penalty into the limit-state functions, which may suffer the approximation error. In this research, the penalty term is introduced to change the right hand side (RHS) value of the deterministic constraints. Without linearizing or transforming the formulations of limit-state function, this penalty-based approach effectively improves the accuracy of RBDO. Comparison experiments are conducted to illustrate how the proposed method obtains improved solutions with acceptable computational cost when compared to other RBDO approaches collected from literature.  相似文献

An automated multi-material approach that integrates multi-objective Topology Optimization (TO) and multi-objective shape optimization is presented. A new ant colony optimization algorithm is presented and applied to solving the TO problem, estimating a trade-off set of initial topologies or distributions of material. The solutions found usually present irregular boundaries, which are not desirable in applications. Thus, shape parameterization of the internal boundaries of the design region, and subsequent shape optimization, is performed to improve the quality of the estimated Pareto-optimal solutions. The selection of solutions for shape optimization is done by using the PROMETHEE II decision-making method. The parameterization process involves identifying the boundaries of different materials and describing these boundaries by non-uniform rational B-spline curves. The proposed approach is applied to the optimization of a C-core magnetic actuator, with two objectives: the maximization of the attractive force on the armature and the minimization of the volume of permanent magnet material.  相似文献
