In the April American Psychologist (1962, 17, 207), Ross Stagner raised the question of royalty payments. Stagner proposed that the American Psychological Association receive "a share of royalties, based on the number of articles reprinted from APA journals" and asked for comments from other psychologists regarding his proposal. The commentator discusses this issue and raises some questions, including (a) to whom, if anyone, should readings royalties be paid and (b) what basis for distribution should be followed? Founded in 1974 under the auspices of the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association, the Association for the Advancement of Psychology (AAP) is a nonprofit corporation that interacts with all branches of the federal government in the interest of psychology and the public. AAP's public policy activities in Congress and the federal agencies in 1980 continued to focus on the elimination of discrimination with regard to the treatment of mental illness and to mental health professionals; opportunities for funding in research and training; the protection of constitutional rights without exception; and fairness in government regulations. The cumulative effect of the advocacy effort, the constant monitoring of annual congressional appropriations and authorization processes, and the greater sophistication of AAP's interaction with the American Psychological Association resulted in significant gains for mental health in federal health programs. The AAP convention program featured a panel of psychologists who entered into a lively debate on the role of AAP and its interaction with state psychological associations. The Eastern Psychological Association is nearly as old as the American Psychological Association itself, both dating from the last decade of the 19th century. On April 27, 1896, a Section of Anthropology, Psychology, and Philosophy was organized as part of the New York Academy of Science. In 1930 the name was changed to the New York Branch of the American Psychological Association. Major issues, actions, and papers are indicated. The basic philosophy of the Eastern Psychological Association is discussed. A table indicates location of annual meetings, number registered, number of papers given, presidents, and similar data since 1930. From Psyc Abstracts 36:02:2AJ49L. There has been substantial debate over the value of concurrent accreditation of doctoral training programs and internships in Canada, both from the Canadian and the American psychological communities. Proponents of concurrent accreditation have argued that concurrent accreditation increases mobility for students and attracts foreign applicants to Canadian graduate programs. Advocates of sole accreditation by the Canadian Psychological Association have argued that there are substantial drawbacks in terms of divergent models, national differences in diversity, and the investment of time and money to maintain cross-national accreditation. In light of the recent decision by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association to stop accrediting Canadian programs, this article reviews the past, present, and future state of accreditation in Canada. Each year, the American Psychological Association's Policy and Planning Board takes the pulse of the Association and the discipline as a whole and writes a report that represents the Board's best appraisal of a fundamental policy. Our main objective, however, is not simply to assess the current situation but to look forward on behalf of the Association and our membership. In 2007, the Policy and Planning Board examined APA's mission in the context of a changing professional and scholarly environment. This report thus explores alternative visions of a future American Psychological Association and takes on the ambitious task of rethinking the Association's mission and how the American Psychological Association might best serve its members, the discipline, and society. In this article, we envision the promise of rethinking the American Psychological Association's mission in the profession and in society. We discuss the American Psychological Association's function and identity and then introduce a conceptual framework that would move us toward becoming the American Psychology Association to promote the work of "psychology." We then proceed to outline the benefits and pitfalls of such a change in mission, as well as some practical and ideological barriers that might block such change. We conclude by summarizing our thought experiment and identifying avenues for productive discussion. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Her frequently cited publications are models of clear thinking and clear writing.
