Wavelength conversion at 20 Gbit/s, to longer and shorter wavelength, is achieved using cross gain-compression in a semiconductor optical amplifier. Quantitative performance is assessed from the bit error rate data at 20 Gbit/s, for the first time for any wavelength conversion scheme. An experimental technique was developed for measuring bit error rates in multi-thousand kilometre fibre amplifier systems using a circulating loop. A transmission distance of 14300 km at 5 Gbit/s and 21000 km at 2.4 Gbit/s was achieved using a nonreturn-to-zero pseudorandom data pattern. A novel multifunctional transceiver for chip-to-chip optical interconnects operating at 2.5 Gbit/s is proposed, which shares a common block between a receiver and a transmitter. This transceiver provides four conversion functions - electrical-to-optical, optical-to-optical, optical-to-electrical, and electrical-to-electrical - depending on the selection switch on a single chip. A nonrepeated fibre transmission experiment over 308 km of conventional optical fibre is reported at 2.5 Gbit/s in a CPFSK heterodyne detection system.
