Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is an advanced sintering technique because of its fast sintering speed and short dwelling time. In this study, TiB2, Y2O3, Al2O3, and different contents of B4C were used as the raw materials to synthesize TiB2-B4C composites ceramics at 1850°C under a uniaxial loading of 48 MPa for 10 min via SPS in vacuum. The influence of different B4C content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiB2-B4C composites ceramics are explored. The experimental results show that TiB2-B4C composite ceramic achieves relatively good comprehensive properties and exceptionally excellent flexural strength when the addition amount of B4C reaches 10 wt.%. Its relative density, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength reach to 99.20%, 24.65 ± .66 GPa, 3.16 MPa·m1/2, 730.65 ± 74.11 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

Commercial Y2O3 nanopowder was used to fabricate transparent Y2O3 ceramics by spark plasma sintering under the pressure of 100 MPa for 20 min with the heating rate of 100 °C/min. The microstructures, mechanical and optical properties of the Y2O3 ceramics sintered at different temperatures were investigated in detail. Densification occurred up to a sintering temperature of 1500 °C, and above 1500 °C, rapid grain growth and pore growth occurred. The highest relative density of 99.58% and the minimum average grain size of 0.58±0.11 µm were obtained at 1500 °C. The flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness of the optimal spark plasma sintered Y2O3 ceramic were 122 MPa, 7.60 GPa and 2.06 MPa.m1/2, respectively. The Y2O3 ceramic sintered at 1500 °C had the in-line transmission of about 11–54% and 80% in the wavelength range of 400–800 nm and 3–5 µm, respectively.  相似文献

A novel and rapid fabrication method for Al2O3 ceramics by the DCC-HVCI method via microwave heating was proposed. Effects of microwave heating temperature on coagulation time, micromorphology, as well as performance of the green body and ceramic sample were studied. As the microwave heating temperature rises, the coagulation time gradually reduced and compressive strength of green sample decreased while relative density and flexural strength of ceramics rose at the beginning and then dropped. The 50 vol.% Al2O3 suspension was coagulated and demolded after treating at 60°C for 800 s by microwave heating. The compressive strength of green samples reached 1.12 ± 0.13 MPa. The relative density of Al2O3 ceramic samples reached 99.39%. And the flexural strength of Al2O3 ceramics reached 334.55 ± 26.41 MPa. The Weibull modulus of Al2O3 ceramics reached 19. In contrast with the ceramic samples heated through water bath, the ceramic samples treated through microwave possessed uniform microstructures. Microwave heating could reduce the coagulation time by 77%. Meanwhile, it could significantly raise the compressive strength of green bodies by 65%. Additionally, it could increase the flexural strength of ceramics by 30%.  相似文献

Dense ZrB2-SiC-Al3BC3 ultra-high temperature ceramic composite was fabricated by hot pressing sintering at 1900°C for 1 hour under a pressure of 20 MPa using Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) as the raw material and a powder mixture of SiC, B4C, Al, and carbon as the sintering additive. Al and B4C underwent in situ reaction with carbon powder to produce Al3BC3, which promoted the densification of ZrB2 ceramic. SiC grains were found to be elongated during sintering. The ZrB2-SiC-Al3BC3 composite exhibited excellent mechanical properties, such as high flexural strength of 589 ± 147 MPa and fracture toughness of 7.81 ± 1.09 MPa m1/2. Oxidation behavior of the ZrB2-SiC-Al3BC3 composite was studied in air at 1500°C for 1 hour. A continuous layer of oxides consisting of a mixture of SiO2, Al2SiO5, and Al2O3 was formed on the surface of the ZrB2-SiC-Al3BC3 composite. This layer of oxides efficiently prevented oxygen from diffusing into the specimens during oxidation, which improved the oxidation resistance of the ZrB2 ceramics.  相似文献

The B4C-LaB6 composite ceramics were fabricated via hot-pressing sintering at 2050 °C and 20 MPa pressure with the mixture of boron carbide (B4C) and 2–5 wt% lanthanum oxides (La2O3) as raw materials. The effects of additive La2O3 content on the microstructures and mechanical properties of composite ceramics were investigated, and reaction mechanisms of La2O3 and B4C at different temperatures were studied in detail. La2CO5, La3BO6 and LaBO3 were formed by the reactions of La2O3 and B4C at different temperatures, and finally LaB6 was formed below 1600 °C. The comprehensive mechanical properties of B4C-LaB6 composite ceramics were optimized by adding 4 wt% La2O3, the flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness reached 350 MPa,4.92 MP am1/2 and 39.08 GPa, respectively. The high densification and flexural strength of composite ceramics achieved in the present study were attributed to LaB6 hindering the movement of grain boundary. However, the densification was reduced caused by CO as La2O3 content increased to 5 wt%. The fast channel was formed via B4C reacting with La2O3, which accelerated migration of B4C in the sintering process. The content of La2O3 played an important role in the fracture mode of the composite ceramics, and ultimately affected the fracture toughness of the composite ceramics.  相似文献

In this study, TiB2–B4C composite ceramics were prepared using Y2O3 and Al2O3 as the sintering aids. Different contents of B4C were added to seek promoted comprehensive mechanical properties of the composites. The mixed powders were sintered at 1850 °C under a uniaxial loading of 30 MPa for 2 h via hot-pressing. Through the measurement of XRD, SEM and related mechanical properties, the influence of B4C content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiB2–B4C composites ceramics was discussed. The experimental results show that TiB2–B4C composite ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties, which can be attributed to the dense microstructure and fine grain size. In addition, TiB2–B4C composite ceramic shows a relatively high comprehensive properties when the addition amount of B4C is 20 wt%. The relative density, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength are measured to be 99.61%, 27.63 ± 1.73 GPa, 4.77 ± 0.06 MPa m1/2, 612.5 ± 28.78 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, the novel boron nitride micron tubes (BNMTs) were used to reinforce commercial boron carbide (B4C) ceramics prepared via spark plasma sintering technology. The effects of the sintering parameters, sintering temperature, the holding time, and the BNMTs content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of B4C/BNMTs composite ceramics were studied. The results indicated that adding a proper amount of BNMTs could inhibit the grain growth of B4C and improve the fracture toughness of the B4C/BNMTs composite ceramics. The prepared composite ceramic sample with 5 wt% BNMTs at 1850°C, 8 min and 30 MPa displayed the best mechanical properties. The relative density, hardness, fracture toughness, and bending strength of the samples were 99.7% ± .1%, 35.62 ± .43 GPa, 6.23 ± .2 MPa m1/2, and 517 ± 7.8 MPa, respectively. Therein, the corresponding value of hardness, fracture toughness, and bending strength was increased by 10.3%, 43.59%, and 61.5%, respectively, than that of the B4C/BNMTs composite ceramic without BNMTs. It was proved that the high interface binding energy and bridging effect between boron carbide and BNMTs were the toughening principle of BNMTs.  相似文献

Tantalum diboride – boron suboxide ceramic composites were densified by spark plasma sintering at 1900 °C. Strength and fracture toughness of these bulk composites at room temperature were 490 MPa and 4 MPa m1/2, respectively. Flexural strength of B6O–TaB2 ceramics increased up to 800 °C and remained unchanged up to 1600 °C. At 1800 °C a rapid decrease in strength down to 300 MPa was observed and was accompanied by change in fracture mechanisms suggestive of decomposition of boron suboxide grains. Fracture toughness of B6O–TaB2 composites showed a minimum at 800 °C, suggestive a relaxation of thermal stresses generated from the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion.Flexural strength at elevated temperatures for bulk TaB2 reference sample was also investigated. Results suggest that formation of composite provides additional strengthening/toughening as in all cases flexural strength and fracture toughness of the B6O–TaB2 ceramic composite was higher than that reported for B6O monoliths.  相似文献

The current study reports on the improvement of mechanical properties of 3?mol% Y2O3 stabilized tetragonal ZrO2 (3Y-TZP) by introduction of tourmaline through ball milling and subsequent densification by pressureless sintering at 800, 1200, 1300, 1400?°C. Findings demonstrate that no matter which sintering temperature the 3Y-TZP ceramic containing 2?wt% tourmaline reach a maximum value in flexural strength and fracture toughness as compared to other composite ceramics. As the tourmaline content is 2?wt% and the sintering temperature is 1300?°C, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite ceramics are the highest, increases of 36.2% and 36.6% over plain 3Y-TZP ceramic respectively. The unique microstructure was systematically investigated through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrum, and flourier transform-infrared. The strengthening and toughening mechanism of tourmaline in 3Y-TZP ceramic were also discussed.  相似文献

The hot pressing process of monolithic Al2O3 and Al2O3-SiC composites with 0-25 wt% of submicrometer silicon carbide was done in this paper. The presence of SiC particles prohibited the grain growth of the Al2O3 matrix during sintering at the temperatures of 1450°C and 1550°C for 1 h and under the pressure of 30 MPa in vacuum. The effect of SiC reinforcement on the mechanical properties of composite specimens like fracture toughness, flexural strength, and hardness was discussed. The results showed that the maximum values of fracture toughness (5.9 ± 0.5 MPa.m1/2) and hardness (20.8 ± 0.4 GPa) were obtained for the Al2O3-5 wt% SiC composite specimens. The significant improvement in fracture toughness of composite specimens in comparison with the monolithic alumina (3.1 ± 0.4 MPa.m1/2) could be attributed to crack deflection as one of the toughening mechanisms with regard to the presence of SiC particles. In addition, the flexural strength was improved by increasing SiC value up to 25 wt% and reached 395 ± 1.4 MPa. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations verified that the increasing of flexural strength was related to the fine-grained microstructure.  相似文献

This paper reports the joining of liquid-phase sintered SiC ceramics using a thin SiC tape with the same composition as base SiC material. The base SiC ceramics were fabricated by hot pressing of submicron SiC powders with 4 wt% Al2O3–Y2O3–MgO additives. The base SiC ceramics were joined by hot-pressing at 1800-1900°C under a pressure of 10 or 20 MPa in an argon atmosphere. The effects of sintering temperature and pressure were examined carefully in terms of microstructure and strength of the joined samples. The flexural strength of the SiC ceramic which was joined at 1850°C under 20 MPa, was 343 ± 53 MPa, higher than the SiC material (289 ± 53 MPa). The joined SiC ceramics showed no residual stress built up near the joining layer, which was evidenced by indentation cracks with almost the same lengths in four directions.  相似文献

Full-dense B4C-based ceramics with excellent mechanical properties were fabricated using spark plasma sintering with Mg2Si as a sintering aid at a low temperature of 1675 °C while applying a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa. The effect of Mg2Si addition on the densification behaviours, mechanical properties and microstructure of as-sintered ceramics were investigated. Not only did the formation of ultra-fine grained SiC using the in-situ reaction effectively inhibit the growth of B4C grains, but it also contributed to the strength and toughness of the resultant ceramics. Additionally, microalloying Mg imparted more metal bonding characteristics to the B4C matrix, thereby improving their ductility. The results indicate that the composite containing 7 wt% Mg2Si had excellent mechanical properties, including a light weight of 2.54 g/cm3, Vickers hardness of 34.3 GPa, fracture toughness of 5.09 MPa m1/2 and flexural strength of 574 MPa.  相似文献

Porous β‐Si3N4 ceramics are sintered at 1600°C in N2 and postheat treated at 1500°C under vacuum using Li2O and Y2O3 as the sintering additives. The partial sintering and phase transformation are promoted at low temperature by the addition of Li2O. The addition of Y2O3 is advantageous for the formation of high aspect ratio β‐Si3N4 grains. After postheat treatment, a large amount of intergranular glassy phase is removed, and the Li content in the samples is decreased. By this method, the β‐Si3N4 porous ceramic with a porosity of 54.1% and high flexural strength of 110 ± 8.1 MPa can be prepared with a small amount of sintering additives, 0.66 wt% Li2O and 0.33 wt% Y2O3, and it is suitable for high‐temperature applications.  相似文献

Spark plasma sintering of TiB2–boron ceramics using commercially available raw powders is reported. The B4C phase developed during reaction-driven consolidation at 1900 °C. The newly formed grains were located at the grain junctions and the triple point of TiB2 grains, forming a covalent and stiff skeleton of B4C. The flexural strength of the TiB2–10 wt.% boron ceramic composites reached 910 MPa at room temperature and 1105 MPa at 1600 °С. Which is the highest strength reported for non-oxide ceramics at 1600 °C. This was followed by a rapid decrease at 1800 °C to 480–620 MPa, which was confirmed by increased number of cavitated titanium diboride grains observed after flexural strength tests.  相似文献

Novel glass ceramics for LTCC applications with high flexural strength can be achieved by CaO-MgO-ZnO-SiO2(CMSZ) glass cofiring with Al2O3. The sintering shrinkage behavior, crystalline phases, mechanical and dielectric properties, and thermal expansion of the CMZS/Al2O3 glass ceramic were determined. The X-ray diffraction results revealed that multiphases (CaMgSi2O6, Al2Ca(SiO4)2 and ZnAl2O4) formed in the sintering process of the CMZS/Al2O3 glass ceramic. The flexural strength of CMZS/Al2O3 glass ceramics first increases and then decreases with increasing Al2O3 content. The CMZS/Al2O3 glass ceramic with 50 wt % Al2O3 sintered at 890 °C for 2 h achieved the best performance, with a maximum flexural strength of 256 MPa, dielectric constant (εr) of 7.89, dielectric loss (tan δ) of 3.41 × 10−3 (12 GHz), temperature coefficient of resonance frequency (τf) of −29 ppm/°C, and the CTE value of 7.93 × 10−6/°C.  相似文献

The effects of B4C content on the specific stiffness and mechanical and thermal properties of pressureless-sintered SiC ceramics were investigated. SiC ceramics containing 2.5 wt% C and 0.7–20 wt% B4C as sintering aids could be sintered to ≥ 99.4% of the theoretical density at 2150 °C for 1 h in Ar. The specific stiffness of SiC ceramics increased from 136.1 × 106 to 144.4 × 106 m2‧s−2 when the B4C content was increased from 0.7 to 20 wt%. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the SiC ceramics were maximal with the incorporation of 10 wt% B4C (558 MPa and 3.69 MPa‧m1/2, respectively), while the thermal conductivity decreased from ∼154 to ∼83 W‧m−1‧K−1 when the B4C content was increased from 0.7 to 30 wt%. The flexural strength and thermal conductivity of the developed SiC ceramic containing 20 wt% B4C were ∼346 MPa and ∼105 W‧m−1‧K−1, respectively.  相似文献

Highly densified Al4SiC4 ceramics with a relative density of 96.1% were prepared by pressureless sintering using 2 wt% Y2O3 as additives. The densification mechanism, phase composition, microstructures and mechanical properties of Al4SiC4 ceramics were investigated. Y2O3 in-situ reacted with the oxygen impurities in Al4SiC4 powder to form a yttrium aluminate liquid phase during sintering, which promoted the densification and anisotropic grain growth. The final Al4SiC4 ceramics were composed of equiaxed grains and columnar grains, and presented a bimodal grain distribution. The mechanical properties of the pressureless sintered Al4SiC4 ceramics were better than those reported for hot pressed Al4SiC4, including a flexural strength of 369 ± 24 MPa, fracture toughness of 4.8 ± 0.1 MPa m1/2 and Vickers hardness of 11.3 ± 0.2 GPa. Pressureless sintering of Al4SiC4 ceramics is of great significance for the development and practical application of Al4SiC4 ceramic parts, especially with big size and complex shape.  相似文献

Low‐temperature sintering of β‐spodumene ceramics with low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was attained using Li2O–GeO2 sintering additive. Single‐phase β‐spodumene ceramics could be synthesized by heat treatment at 1000°C using highly pure and fine amorphous silica, α‐alumina, and lithium carbonate powders mixture via the solid‐state reaction route. The mixture was calcined at 950°C, finely pulverized, compacted, and finally sintered with or without the sintering additive at 800°C–1400°C for 2 h. The relative density reached 98% for the sample sintered with 3 mass% Li2O–GeO2 additive at 1000°C. Its Young's modulus was 167 GPa and flexural strength was 115 MPa. Its CTE (from R.T. to 800°C) was 0.7 × 10?6 K?1 and dielectric constant was 6.8 with loss tangent of 0.9% at 5 MHz. These properties were excellent or comparative compared with those previously reported for the samples sintered at around 1300°C–1400°C via melt‐quenching routes. As a result, β‐spodumene ceramics with single phase and sufficient properties were obtained at about 300°C lower sintering temperature by adding Li2O–GeO2 sintering additive via the conventional solid‐state reaction route. These results suggest that β‐spodumene ceramics sintered with Li2O–GeO2 sintering additive has a potential use as LTCC for multichip modules.  相似文献

Hf0.95Nb0.05B2 ceramics and their composites containing 20 vol% SiC were prepared via high-pressure spark plasma sintering in the study. The densification, microstructures, and mechanical properties of the prepared materials were then investigated. It is challenging to achieve full densification of HfB2 ceramics, even with markedly refined Hf0.95Nb0.05B2 solid solution powder under the sintering conditions of 2000 °C/30 MPa. However, under the sintering conditions of 1700 °C/200 MPa, a dense microstructure of Hf0.95Nb0.05B2 ceramics was achieved. Moreover, the Hf0.95Nb0.05B2-20 vol% SiC composite was densified at a lower temperature (1500 °C) and exhibited ultrafine grains (300 nm) and high-density defects, including stacking faults, Lomer-Cottrell locks, and twins, thus resulting in exceptional comprehensive mechanical properties, such as ultra-high hardness (32 GPa) and significantly improved fracture toughness (5.2 MPa.m1/2).  相似文献

This study prepared textured (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 medium-entropy ceramics for the first time that maintain enhanced flexural strength up to 1800°C using single-phase (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 powders, slip casting under a strong magnetic field, and hot-pressed sintering methods. Effects of WC additive and strong magnetic field direction on the phase compositions, orientation degree, microstructure evolution, and high-temperature flexural strength of (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 were investigated. (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 grain grows along the a,b-axes, resulting in a platelet-like morphology. Pressure parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field direction can promote the orientation degree and hinder the texture structure formation, respectively. Reaction products of W(B,C) and (Ti,Zr,Hf)C between (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 and WC additive can efficiently refine the (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 grain size and promote grain orientation. (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2 ceramics doped with 5 vol.% WC yielded a Lotgering orientation factor of 0.74 through slip casting under a strong magnetic field (12 T) and hot-pressed sintering at 1900°C. Furthermore, cleaning the boundary by W(B,C) and introducing texture can enhance the grain-boundary strength and improve its high-temperature flexural strength. The four-point flexural strength of textured (Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)B2-5 vol.% WC ceramics was 770 ± 59 MPa at 1600°C and 638 ± 117 MPa at 1800°C.  相似文献
