Refurbishment management practices in the shipping and construction industries — lessons to be learned

The management of refurbishment work in both sectors is complex, highly specialized and contains elements of works which are unique to refurbishment and which are different from new work. Ship refurbishment clients are better informed and more knowledgeable about refurbishment processes and products than construction clients and are more involved in the planning and decision making process. The authors claim that there is very little evidence of formal or structured processes of managing risks and uncertainty in refurbishment, in both sectors, especially the quantification and evaluation of risks. There is also an urgent need for educators and refurbishment organizations to address the issue of under-provision of refurbishment management courses.

The role of trustworthiness in the formation and governance of construction alliances

The ensuing globalization of the construction industry as well as the highly fragmented and divisive nature of the industry are among the forces that are influencing it to seek management approaches such as strategic alliances that could leverage the capabilities of the various participants. This paper reports on a study that investigated the factors considered by firms when selecting alliance partners, and the influence of trustworthiness in deciding the governance structures of the alliances. A study of key partners in existing and potential construction alliances in Botswana that was carried out using a postal questionnaire and structured interviews determined that firms consider complementarity, similar status, indirect prior alliance experience and reputation before they make a selection of an alliance partner. The study also determined that partner trustworthiness eliminates the need of contractual clauses in the operation of the alliances. The paper concludes that trustworthiness of a partner is an influencing factor in all stages of the alliance development.

The role of organizational objects in construction projects: the case of the collapse and restoration of the Tjörn Bridge

The construction industry immutably produces built environments that directly influence the everyday lives of human beings. Nevertheless, materiality, defined as intransient physical matter socially enacted in the form of artefacts and objects as well as built constructions, is often overlooked and simply regarded as passive and inert matter. In contrast, a growing body of literature recognizes the agency of materiality and examines how materiality and agency are co-produced. When examining a spectacular event like the collapse of the Tjörn Bridge on Sweden’s west coast, it is argued that organizational objects are capable of interpellating various actors, thus enabling informed and adequate action. The concepts of the organizational object and interpellation are thus useful analytical terms when examining construction project organization, helping scholars of the construction industry and practising managers to rethink the role of materiality as something that both acts and is acted upon.
