This issue marks the inception of my term as editor of the Journal of Family Psychology (JFP). The journal, in its 24th year, is like a young adult. It has achieved a level of professional identity, independence, and competence consistent with this developmental phase. I feel honored and privileged to be at the helm of the journal at a time at this juncture of young adulthood. As the editorial torch is passed to me, I am mindful of the significant responsibilities that have been entrusted to me. I conceptualize my role as that of mentor, guide, and catalyst of the ongoing evolution and success of JFP. The journal aims to provide a platform that supports the transmission of new scholarly discoveries in the field and I am excited about offering a structure that supports family psychology scholars in building upon our intellectual treasures and advancing our understanding about couples and families in novel and meaningful ways. Reviews the book, A History of Western Psychology by David J. Murray (1982). In two respects this is a highly traditional book. First of all, the parts of the subject that are singled out for serious consideration are the most venerable core areas of experimental psychology--above all, sensation, and to a slightly lesser extent, memory and other aspects of cognition. Social psychology gets less than 1% of the total space and such areas as developmental, applied and personality psychology are hardly glanced at. There is however a whole chapter on psychoanalysis. A second traditional feature of the book is expressed in its commitment to the view that the history of psychology is to be treated purely as intellectual history. Editing a journal that combines professional, scientific, and public policy interests is a strange business, indeed. Although this January 1987 issue of the American Psychologist (AP) begins the second year of my editorship, it is the first issue that actually reflects my editorial input and that of my associate editors. This state of affairs results from both the usual 9- to 10-month publication lag and the normal transition process between two editorial terms. It seems worthwhile to use my "first" issue as an opportunity to comment on the editorial direction of the journal, about the editorial process itself (and some changes we have made in it), and about some specific modifications in format that you will see in coming issues. It is both a great honor and an exciting professional challenge to take on the responsibility of Editor for School Psychology Quarterly. My motivations for serving in this capacity stem from my fundamental belief that high-quality scholarship is essential to the health and vigor of school psychology. The mission I envision for the Quarterly is to be out in front of our field breaking new scientific, intellectual, and professional ground for the future, helping school psychology to "be all that it can be." At the macro-level, I have two clear objectives. First, I want to build on the very best accomplishments of my predecessors, Tom Kratochwill and Joe Witt, reinforcing foundational elements crucial to the journal's success. Both continuity and change typically mark the changing of editors at a long-established journal with extended editorial terms. Change is inherent in any dynamic field and is independent of editorship, but editors have an influence that should be wielded in a fair, responsible, judicious, and scientifically rigorous manner, while inevitably reflecting their own perspectives and values. The Journal of Comparative Psychology will continue to publish exciting, fascinating, assessable, controversial, and well-written reports on research, be the topic traditional, interdisciplinary, applied, or one breaking risky new ground. Editorial standards must be high, but appropriate for various subfields, and as editor the author will try to make those judgments carefully. The author would also like to see more submissions of brief reports describing exciting developments as well as submissions on significant theoretical, conceptual, and methodological issues during his tenure as editor. In an attempt to make Rehabilitation Psychology an interactive forum, two new sections appear in this issue. The first is the "Readers' Forum," designed to present a submission that has successfully undergone the journal's anonymous review process and that addresses a significant rehabilitation issue. The second section, "Letters to the Editor," is designed to present feedback from readers, brief responses to and comments about previously published materials, and other information determined to be of potential interest to readers but that does not lend itself to more formal presentation.
