Polyvinyl alcohol–carbon nanotube (PVA–CNT) fibers were embedded in glass fiber reinforced plastic composites and used as strain sensors for damage monitoring of the composite. Sensing of the structural integrity of the composite was made by the in situ measurement of the electrical resistance of the embedded PVA–CNT fiber during the mechanical tests. The multi-functional materials were tested in tensile progressive damage accumulation (PDA) tests. These tests aimed to seek the electrical response of untreated and pre-stretched PVA–CNT fibers with known level of progressively induced damage to the composite. The advantages and disadvantages of each PVA–CNT fiber used as a sensor are analyzed; the electrical resistance readings of the PVA–CNT fibers were correlated with known parameters that express the induced damage of the composite.  相似文献

The last two decades have seen increasing applications of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in civil engineering structures due to their many advantages over traditional strengthening and reinforcing materials. Among the most common applications is bonding or wrapping FRP products (strips or sheets) to the exterior of reinforced concrete (RC) members to increase their strength or deformability. However, widespread application of FRP strengthening systems in buildings, where structural fire ratings are required, is hindered due to unknowns surrounding the reduction in their mechanical and bond properties at elevated temperatures. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on the fire performance of FRP-strengthened RC structural elements. The review addresses first the mechanical behaviour at high temperature of the constituent materials of FRPs and how their bond to concrete is affected when heated. The paper then discusses available experimental and numerical studies on the fire behaviour of FRP-strengthened RC beams, slabs, and columns. Available design guidance is also discussed. Finally, recommendations for future research are given.  相似文献

In the present work, carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers had been embedded to glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) for the structural health monitoring of the composite material. The addition of the conductive CNT fiber to the non-conductive GFRP material aims to enhance its multi-function ability; the test specimen’s response to mechanical load and the insitu CNT fiber’s electrical resistance measurements were correlated for sensing and damage monitoring purposes. It is the first time this fiber is used in composite materials for sensing purposes; CNT fiber is easy to be embedded and does not downgrade the material’s mechanical properties. Various incremental loading–unloading steps had been applied to the manufactured specimens in tension as well as in three-point bending tests. The CNT fiber worked as a sensor in both, tensile and compression loadings. A direct correlation between the mechanical loading and the electrical resistance change had been established for the investigated specimens. For high stress (or strain) level loadings, residual resistance measurements of the CNT fiber were observed after unloading. Accumulating damage to the composite material had been calculated and was correlated to the electrical resistance readings. The established correlation between these parameters changed according to the material’s loading history.  相似文献

In this work, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been used as a network of sensors to predict the failure region and to monitor the degradation of mechanical properties in laminated composites subjected to tensile and cyclic fatigue loadings. This is achieved by measuring the electrical resistance change in the semi-conductive MWCNT-fiber glass–epoxy polymer matrix composites. By partitioning the tensile and fatigue samples with electrically conductive probes, it is shown that with both increasing tensile load and number of cycles different resistance changes are detected in different regions and failure happens in the part in which higher resistance change was detected. In cyclic loading, when compared to strain gauge readings, resistance change measurements show more sensitivity in identifying the crack location, which gives this technique a good potential for monitoring damage during fatigue.  相似文献

Thermal fatigue tests were conducted on high temperature resistant carbon fiber reinforced plastics cross-ply laminates to evaluate microscopic damage progress which affects macroscopic mechanical behavior of the laminates. Materials system used were thermoplastic polyetheretherketone based, AS4/PEEK and thermoset bismaleimide based, G40-800/5260. Several types of laminate configuration were used to clarify the effect of ply thickness on microscopic damage progress. Microscopic damages were observed using optical microscopy and soft X-ray radiography. Energy release rate associated with transverse cracking was calculated using variational analysis. The modified Paris law was used to predict transverse cracking. From comparison to mechanical fatigue test results, it is clarified that transverse crack accumulation rate was larger under thermal fatigue loading at same energy release rate range due to the dependence of the fracture toughness on temperature.  相似文献

This paper presents a parametric investigation, based on non-linear finite element modeling, to identify the most effective configuration of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) dapped-end beams. Following a field application and laboratory tests, it focuses on effects of 24 externally bonded (EBR) and near surface mounted reinforcement (NSMR) configurations on yield strain in steel and the capacity and failure mode of dapped-end beams. The investigated parameters were the mechanical properties of the CFRP, the strengthening procedure and the inclination of the fibers with respect to the longitudinal axis. Two failure scenarios were considered: rupture and debonding of the FRP. The results indicate that high-strength NSM FRPs can considerably increase the capacity of dapped-end beams and the yielding strains in reinforcement can be substantially reduced by using high modulus fibers.  相似文献

The research dealt with the relation between damage and tension–tension fatigue residual strength (FRS) in a quasi-isotropic carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin laminate. The work was organized in two phases: during the first one, composite laminates were damaged by means of an out-of-plane quasi-static load that was supposed to simulate a low velocity impact; in the second phase, fatigue tests were performed on damaged and undamaged specimens obtained from the original composite laminates. During the quasi-static transverse loading phase, damage progression was monitored by means of acoustic emission (AE) technique. The measurement of the strain energy accumulated in the specimens and of the acoustic energy released by fracture events made it possible to estimate the amount of induced damage and evaluate the quasi-static residual tensile strength of the specimens. A probabilistic failure analysis of the fatigue data, reduced by the relative residual strength values, made it possible to relate the FRS of damaged specimens with the fatigue strength of undamaged ones.  相似文献

The effects of nanoclay inclusion on cyclic fatigue behavior and residual properties of carbon fiber-reinforced composites (CFRPs) after fatigue have been studied. The tension–tension cyclic fatigue tests are conducted at various load levels to establish the S-N curve. The residual strength and modulus are measured at different stages of fatigue cycles. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) are employed to characterize the underlying fatigue damage mechanisms and progressive damage growth. The incorporation of nanoclay into CFRP composites not only improves the mechanical properties of the composite in static loading, but also the fatigue life for a given cyclic load level and the residual mechanical properties after a given period of cyclic fatigue. The corresponding fatigue damage area is significantly reduced due to nanoclay. Nanoclay serves to suppress and delay delamination damage growth and eventual failure by improving the fiber/matrix interfacial bond and through the formation of nanoclay-induced dimples.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of current research on the fatigue life prediction of carbon/epoxy laminate composites involving twelve balanced woven bidirectional layers of carbon fibres and epoxy resin manufactured by a vacuum moulding method. The plates were produced with 3 mm thickness and 0.66 fibre weight fraction. The dog bone shape specimens were cut from these plates with the load line aligned with one of the fibre directions. The fatigue tests were performed using load control with a frequency of 10 Hz and at room temperature. The fatigue behaviour was studied for different stress ratios and for variable amplitude block loadings. The damage process was monitored in terms of the stiffness loss. The fatigue life of specimens submitted to block loading tests was modelled using Palmgren–Miner’s law and taking in to account the stress ratio effect. The estimated and experimental fatigue lives were compared and good agreement was observed.  相似文献

The rheological behavior of structural materials has a significant role indeed in Civil Engineering, where concrete and FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) materials undergo creep in normal environmental conditions, while steel exhibits a sizable creep only at high temperature (above 400 °C). With reference to RC structures strengthened by means of FRP laminates, FRP creep generally coexists with concrete cracking. The interaction between these phenomena should be taken into account in order to evaluate the structural durability. Here, the first results of a research program on creep in composite pultruded laminates used in Civil Engineering are presented, under various stress levels and in constant environmental conditions (many theoretical and experimental studies on creep have been performed so far in the aerospace and naval fields, but not as many in Civil Engineering). The specimens tested in this project are made of high modulus carbon fiber reinforced polymer – CFRP, whose mechanical properties are tailored for Civil Engineering applications. The tests are still in progress in the Material and Structures Testing Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Salerno (Italy).  相似文献

The fatigue properties of glass fibre reinforced epoxy laminates modified with small amounts (0.3 wt.%) of nanoparticles (fumed silica SiO2 and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)) were evaluated by means of static (90°-tensile and stepped tensile) and dynamic fatigue tests. For the MWCNT-modified matrix, the electrical conductivity was measured in situ. The addition of nanoparticles lead to increases in inter fibre fracture strength of up to 16%. More significantly, the high cycle fatigue life is increased by several orders of magnitude in number of load cycles. The increased inter fibre fracture strength could be correlated to the improved fatigue behaviour, as final failure in high cycle fatigue is strongly correlated to matrix cracks. For the MWCNT-modified composites, the state of load and damage state was monitored by conductivity measurements. A correlation between the onset of matrix cracking and increase in electrical resistivity could be drawn enabling self sensing capabilities.  相似文献

The manufacture of composite structures is inevitably linked to the formation of voids. Several non-destructive techniques are potentially able of detecting defects, but just the exact knowledge of the effects of defects on the mechanical properties allows the definition of thresholds for the purpose of quality management. In this paper an experimental program for characterizing the effect of voids on the composite materials behaviour is presented. Therefore glass fibre non-crimp fabric reinforced epoxy composites were produced using vacuum assistant resin transfer moulding. For obtaining various void contents specially modified process parameters were used. Nominally defect free specimens are compared with flawed specimens. Tensile testing at different loading speeds and fatigue tests in tension-compression loading are performed.  相似文献

The present research study is focused on the tensile testing and mechanical characterization of three different epoxy resins, reinforced with different concentrations of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs). The resins are used in crack repair of concrete members as well as in FRP sheet wrapping. The CNT reinforced polymers (CNTRP) showed a remarkable enhancement of their tensile strength (2.25 times over the host matrix) and deformation at failure (3.27 times over the host matrix). The CNTRP with the highest viscosity were used in a structural application, to impregnate glass FRP sheets to confine concrete cylinders. Then the specimens were wrapped with non-impregnated polypropylene fiber ropes (PPFR). The comparative results between specimens confined by the hybrid system, including glass sheets impregnated with epoxy resin or with resin reinforced by CNTs (CNTRP), are discussed. The specimen with CNT reinforced polymer showed 7.5% higher bearing load of the concrete until failure of the glass sheet, over the column with non-reinforced polymer. The gradual, smooth failure of the glass fiber CNTRP jacket took place at higher load levels than GFRP. Moreover, it presented half temporary load loss after the fracture of the glass sheet than the GFRP strengthened column. Finally, it indicated an earlier stabilization and regaining of the bearing load (27% earlier in terms of axial strain).  相似文献

Polymer-derived Si-C-N ceramics reinforced by homogeneously distributed octadecylamine-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized using a casting process, successive pressureless cross-linking and thermolysis. We find that the incorporation of even small amounts of modified SWCNTs leads to a remarkable improvement of mechanical and electrical transport properties of our composites. In particular, we find twofold enhancement of fracture toughness. The Youngs modulus and the hardness show increase by ∼30% and 15%, respectively. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity was found to increase more than five orders of magnitude even for a tube content of 0.5 wt.%.  相似文献

Aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are implemented into alumina-fiber reinforced laminates, and enhanced mass-specific thermal and electrical conductivities are observed. Electrical conductivity enhancement is useful for electrostatic discharge and sensing applications, and is used here for both electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and deicing. CNTs were grown directly on individual fibers in woven cloth plies, and maintained their alignment during the polymer (epoxy) infiltration used to create laminates. Using multiple complementary methods, non-isotropic electrical and thermal conductivities of these hybrid composites were thoroughly characterized as a function of CNT volume/mass fraction. DC and AC electrical conductivity measurements demonstrate high electrical conductivity of >100 S/m (at 3% volume fraction, ∼1.5% weight fraction, of CNTs) that can be used for multifunctional applications such as de-icing and electromagnetic shielding. The thermal conductivity enhancement (∼1 W/m K) suggests that carbon-fiber based laminates can significantly benefit from aligned CNTs. Application of such new nano-engineered, multi-scale, multi-functional CNT composites can be extended to system health monitoring with electrical or thermal resistance change induced by damage, fire-resistant structures among other multifunctional attributes.  相似文献

Poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) was used to modify diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) type epoxy resin cured with diamino diphenyl sulfone (DDS) and the modified epoxy resin was used as the matrix for fibre reinforced composites (FRPs) in order to get improved mechanical and thermal properties. E-glass fibre was used as the fibre reinforcement. The morphology, dynamic mechanical and thermal characteristics of the systems were analyzed. Morphological analysis revealed heterogeneous dispersed morphology. There was good adhesion between the matrix polymer and the glass fibre. The dynamic moduli, mechanical loss and damping behaviour as a function of temperature of the systems were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). DMA studies showed that DDS cured epoxy resin/SAN/glass fibre composite systems have two Tgs corresponding to epoxy rich and SAN rich phases. The effect of thermoplastic modification and fibre loading on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were also analyzed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed the superior thermal stability of composite system.  相似文献

The fatigue behaviour of a unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin subjected to large cyclic strains has been investigated. The development of a specific testing apparatus and procedure was found to be necessary so as to successfully test the unidirectional material in fatigue. A loop configuration has been used which allowed a gradual transfer of load from the testing machine to the specimen to be achieved without producing stress concentrations in the clamps. The results of the study reveal the existence of a fatigue mechanism for unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin which becomes evident under large cyclic strains, greater than 0.7%. This effect was seen to be a function of the loading level and whether the material was aged in humid conditions or not. Ageing lowered the threshold level for the onset of fatigue. The failure mechanisms involved have been revealed by scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

This paper reports experimental studies of reinforced concrete (RC) beams retrofitted with new hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) system consisting carbon FRP (CFRP) and glass FRP (GFRP). The objective of this study is to examine effect of hybrid FRPs on structural behavior of retrofitted RC beams and to investigate if different sequences of CFRP and GFRP sheets of the hybrid FRPs have influences on improvement of strengthening RC beams. Toward that goal, 14 RC beams are fabricated and retrofitted with hybrid FRPs having different combinations of CFRP and GFRP sheets. The beams are loaded with different magnitudes prior to retrofitting in order to investigate the effect of initial loading on the flexural behavior of the retrofitted beam. The main test variables are sequences of attaching hybrid FRP layers and magnitudes of preloads. Under loaded condition, beams are retrofitted with two or three layers of hybrid FRPs, then the load increases until the beams reach failure. Test results conclude that strengthening effects of hybrid FRPs on ductility and stiffness of RC beams depend on orders of FRP layers.  相似文献

Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are effective in the flexural stiffening and strengthening of structural members. Such systems can be optimised if accurate numerical models are developed. At present, limited information is available in the literature on numerical models that can predict with good accuracy the nonlinear behaviour of FRP reinforced low-grade glued laminated timber beams. This paper discusses the development of a finite element model, which incorporates nonlinear material modelling and nonlinear geometry to predict the load–deflection behaviour, stiffness, ultimate moment capacity and strain distribution of FRP plate reinforced glued laminated timber beams manufactured from mechanically stress graded spruce. Beams with and without sacrificial laminations are modelled and their performance is compared to unreinforced glued laminated timber beams. The model employed anisotropic plasticity theory for the timber in compression. The failure model used was the maximum stress criterion. Strong agreement was obtained between the predicted behaviour and the associated experimental findings. It was deduced from comparing the results from the numerical model with experimental findings that the FRP plate succeeds in increasing the performance of the adjacent timber significantly. The model is a useful tool for examination of the effect of reinforcement percentage and will be used for optimisation of the hybrid beam.  相似文献
