Stereocomplex crystallization between PLLA and PDLA is known to be disturbed when their molecular weights increase to >105 g · mol?1. Here, solution casting of PLLA and PDLA with different solvents was performed repeatedly to increase the time for the PLLA/PDLA solution in the concentration range in which only stereocomplex crystallites are formed and thus to elevate the stereocomplex crystallinity in the materials. The results of WAXS and DSC show that for all solvents examined the crystallinities of stereocomplex crystallites and homocrystallites increased and decreased, respectively, with increasing number of castings, indicating that repeated casting is a promising method to enhance stereocomplex crystallization.

TPU was infiltrated into vertically aligned, 3.5 mm‐long MWNT forests to produce continuously reinforced anisotropic nanocomposites, and thermomechanical and electrical testing has revealed multifunctionality which shows promise for numerous applications. A 1000% increase in the storage modulus at 70 °C was observed as compared to the neat TPU, and these continuously aligned composites showed electrical conductivity two orders‐of‐magnitude greater (≈1.5 S · cm?1) than randomly aligned composites prepared using CNTs from these forests. The heightened improvement for the continuously reinforced composite appears to be owed to the extremely high aspect ratio of these CNTs and the interconnected network which remains after infiltration.

Summary: An original direct melt extrusion processing of nylon 6/clay nanocomposites was reported based on pristine (Na+‐based) montmorillonite as well as a simple approach using a typical two‐screw extruder. By the application of intercalation agents as the thermodynamic assistants, this method is as an appropriate procedure for industrialized manufacture together with much lowered production cost. Interestingly enough, the synergistic effects of montmorillonite with other inorganic particulates was observed for the first time here.

Electrically conducting films containing AgNws, hydrophilic and hydrophobic resins were prepared. FT‐IR reveals that the interface between the AgNws and epoxy could be successfully modified by APTES. XPS shows that the AgNws were attracted by hydrogen bonds of ? NH2 and ? NH? groups after APTES modification. SEM analysis shows that the AgNws were well dispersed in the resin. The AgNws were also blended with hydrophilic and acrylic resins, and the resulting blends were compared with AgNws/epoxy blends. Results show that AgNw/PVA‐resin films possess the lowest surface electrical resistance. The AgNw/PVA‐resin and silane‐modified AgNw/epoxy resin conductive films possess a similar electrical percolation threshold.

Summary: Novel light‐sensitive hollow capsules were fabricated from the small molecule 3‐sulfopropylacrylate potassium (SPA) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). With UV irradiation, SPA could be photopolymerized in the wall of hollow capsules. After photopolymerization the capsule size and surfaces showed pronounced differences. The capsules became much more rigid as indicated by an increase in the modulus of more than a factor of 5.

Summary: A fluorine containing hyperbranched polymer was synthesized by modifying an aromatic‐aliphatic hyperbranched polyester with a semifluorinated alcohol via a Mitsunobu reaction and was subsequently used as an additive in cationic photopolymerization of an epoxy resin. The remaining OH groups of the fluorinated hyperbranched polymer interact with the polymeric carbocation through a chain‐transfer mechanism inducing an increase in the final epoxy conversion. The fluorinated HBP induces modification of bulk and surface properties, with an increase in Tg and surface hydrophobicity already reached at very low concentration. The HBFP additive can, therefore, protect the coatings from aggressive solvents, increases hardness, and allows the preparation of a low energy surface coating.

Summary: An organic‐inorganic hybrid material consisting of a 3‐(methacryloxy)propyl functionalized SiO2/MgO framework was synthesized. This hybrid was successfully reacted with styrene, butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate via a free radical emulsion polymerization to form polymer composites. The polymer composites were investigated by means of FT‐IR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC and rheometry. It is shown that the polymer is linked covalently to the organic/inorganic hybrid. Although the polymer content is rather low, the composites exhibit a polymer‐like character and enhanced mechanical properties compared to the corresponding homopolymers.

In the present work, we report on the synthesis and characterization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM) polymer side chains from molecular graft copolymerization in solution. The copolymer can be readily cast into temperature‐sensitive microfiltration (MF) membranes by the phase inversion technique. The copolymer approach to membrane fabrication allows a much better control of the physicochemical nature of the membrane pores through the variation in graft concentration, membrane casting temperature and concentration of the membrane casting solution.

New models for the Maddock and spiral shearing sections have been developed, employing three‐dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA). These models describe the pressure‐throughput and power consumption behavior of the shearing sections for both the extrusion and the injection molding process and have been implemented in the REX 6.0 and PSI 4.0 simulation software. As a consequence it is now possible to describe the process behavior of these shearing sections within just a few seconds with the accuracy of FEA calculations.

Summary: A new method of polymerising PET in the solid state is proposed in either a gas phase reactor, or in hydrocarbon dispersion. It is shown that the reaction can be carried out efficiently at temperatures on the order of 200–240 °C directly from a prepolymer without the need for a melt phase step. It is shown that the crystal structure of the prepolymer plays a determining role in the kinetics of the SSP reaction.

The copolymerization of 1,8‐naphthalimide derivatives (as fluorophore) with acrylonitrile has been investigated. The photophysical characteristics of monomeric and polymeric fluorophores in N,N‐dimethylformamide solution have been determined and discussed. During copolymerization, no changes in the chromophoric systems of the fluorophore occur. The influence of the studied monomeric 1,8‐naphthalimide fluorophores upon the structurally bleached polyacrylonitrile has been determined. Infrared absorption characteristics of the polymerizable 4‐alkoxy‐ and 4‐allyloxy‐N‐substituted‐1,8‐naphthalimides have been measured and discussed. The effect of the substituents upon the vibration frequencies of the carbonyl and allylic groups has been established.

Summary: Compacted fiber composites offer unique properties due to their lack of an extraneous matrix. The conditions of processing ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers were simulated in a heated pressure cell. In situ X‐ray diffraction measurements were used to follow the relevant transitions and the changes in the degree of crystallinity during melting and crystallization. The results strongly support the suggestion that the hexagonal crystal phase, in which the chain conformation is extremely mobile on the segmental level, constitutes the physical basis of compaction technologies for processing UHMWPE fibers into a single‐polymer composite. This report suggests that using a pseudo‐phase diagram outlining the occurrence of different phases during slow heating and the degree of crystallinity can provide valuable insight into the technological parameters relevant for optimal processing conditions.

A flow visualisation apparatus is described which allows to compare different rotor designs to each other. In order to observe the distributive mixing effect, the stream flow and dispersive mixing effect is monitored by an indirect measurement of the power impact within the material. Assuming that the mixing process of an internal mixer is not continuous, a testing device was build to the scale of a 90 l kneader. In this device the mixing chamber and the rotor blade are unwound into the flat plane. With this testing device it is possible to carry out a systematic analysis of the influence of rotor design on the flow processes within an internal mixer in a fast and inexpensive way.

Summary: In this paper, we describe the use of artificial opals from polymer beads as effect pigments in transparent industrial and automotive coatings. For this purpose, we synthesized monodisperse colloids from fluorinated methacrylates by surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization. The fluorinated monomers, in combination with crosslinking, lead to a refractive index contrast, thermal stability, and solvent resistivity necessary for use as effect pigments. After crystallization of the monodisperse polymer beads, crystal flakes with iridescent colors can be obtained. The crystal flakes can act as effect pigments in various transparent industrial and automotive coatings. Due to photonic crystal behavior of effect pigments, color flops up to 100 nm are observed.

Summary: Polycaprolactone (PCL) and starch/PCL blends (SPCL) are shown to have the potential to be used in a range of biomedical applications and can be processed with conventional melting‐based procedures. In this paper, the thermal and thermomechanical analyses of PCL and SPCL were performed, using DSC, optical microscopy and DMA. Starch effectively increased the non‐isothermal crystallisation rate of PCL. Non‐isothermal crystallisation kinetics was analyzed using Ozawa model, and a method, which combines the theories of Avrami and Ozawa. Starch effectively reinforced PCL and enhanced its damping properties, which indicated that SPCL could be more suitable than PCL in some biomedical applications, as it might help in the dissipation of the mechanical energy generated by the patient movements.

The functionalization of polystyrene/poly(ethylene glycol) TentaGel® microbeads (d = 20 μm) with 2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine units is described resulting in a material with easily accessible ligands which possess an excellent affinity for transition metal ions. The subsequent loading with different metal ions via metal‐to‐ligand complexation yielded the corresponding CoII, NiII, FeII, and CuII modified beads. The isolated materials were investigated in detail utilizing UV/vis spectroscopy, optical microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, grafting of free terpyridine moieties via ruthenium(II )/ruthenium(III )‐chemistry onto the beads is demonstrated. This opens‐up new pathways for the selective modification of such microbeads and the preparation of functional materials.
