AiM86 — automation in manufacturing

The sra International Conference: AiM86 — Automation in Manufacturing, was held in The World Trade Centre in Singapore from 18–21 November 1986. The event was organised by the sra Singapore Robotics & Automation Association in conjunction with MetalAsia86, the 4th Asian International Machine Tool & Metalworking Show, AutomAsia86, the 3rd South East Asian International Manufacturing Technology & Robotics Show.The conference was organised in six sessions: (1) Human Factors, (2) Automated Quality Assurance, (3) Sensory Systems, (4) Automated Manufacturing Systems i, (5) Automated Manufacturing Systems ii, (6A) Robotics, (6B) cad/cam. 36 papers were presented by internationally recognised experts.We present below a report on the lectures given at the conference.

Fault—Tolerant Tree—Based Multicasting in Mesh Multicomputers

We propose a fault-tolerant tree-based multicast algorithm for 2-dimensional (2-D) meshes based on the concept of the extended safety level which is a vector associated with each node to capture fault information in the neighborhood.In this approach each destination is reached through a minimum number of hops,In order to minimize the total number of traffic steps,three heuristic strategies are proposed.This approach can be easily implemented by pipelined circuit switching(PCS).A simulation study is conducted to measure the total number of traffic steps under different strategies.Our approach is the first attempt to address the faulttolerant tree-based multicast strategies.Our approach is the first attempt to address the faulttolerant tree-based multicast problem in 2-D meshes based on limited global information with a simple model and succinct information.

The speed—accuracy trade-off in industry

Abstract

In the class of resource-limited tasks, performance speed and accuracy are expected to be inversely related. However at the systems level, interventions which improve quality can provide benefits in throughput. Examining the speed-accuracy operating characteristic (SAOC) of industrial tasks shows that the apparent conflict between these two bodies of data is due to different types of intervention. A methodology for the systematic consideration of the speed-accuracy trade-off (SATO) is proposed, and its application to the tasks in aircraft structural inspection is developed as an example.     

Vibration in offshore structures — part II

The response of offshore structures to random wave excitation is studied for general nonstationary stochastic excitation, constant, time-dependent, or stochastic coefficients, and nonlinear forces without linearization, or averaging methods and closure approximation, or numerical methods. The method used yields physically realistic analytic solutions.     

UBMBPT—unrestricted Hartree—Fock many-body perturbation theory program in C

The open-shell single-reference many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) method for electron correlation calculation has been implemented up to the third order. The inclusion of bubble as well as non-bubble diagrams allows the unrestricted Hartree—Fock (UHF) reference with the UHF as well as the restricted Hartree—Fock (RHF) optimized orbitals. The program has been implemented in C language for its efficiency and flexibility. Given the input requirements and physical resource limitations, dynamic memory allocation capability of C allows optimal use of physical memory automatically. Input data are taken from the standard input stream in text/ASCII form for generality; allowing interoperation with programs in other languages and piping for minimizing disk space requirements. If the correct input is provided by the appropriate SCF program and prefilter, user involvement in the calculation is minimal. Various command line options are provided to monitor the program progress through timings, memory allocation and deallocation as well as file and disk size tracing. The appropriate environment variables under UNIX operating system allow flexible reassignment of temporary files to different directories and/or disks without program recompilation.     

Technology Effects in Distributed Team Coordination—High-Interdependency Tasks in Offshore Oil Production

For highly interdependent yet location-specific tasks, distributed teams need to closely coordinate activities and processes. This field study in the upstream oil and gas industry focused on challenges in the coordination of highly interdependent tasks if teams work remotely on an ongoing basis. Based on 78 semi-structured interviews and observations over a period of 12 months, we identified coordination requirements for primary team activities, as well as effects of changing media capabilities to overcome difficulties of ongoing distribution. Implications for media requirements in the support of ongoing distributed teams are discussed.
