On decision making and worth assessment

In this paper we present a tutorial review of the decision-making problem and of some of the tools available for treating it. We present a systems engineering framework developed by Hall and expanded by Warfield and Hill. Within that, framework we identify the decision-making and worth-assessment problems. As tools to effectively treat these problems, we present a summary review of the extensive form of decision analysis, modern utility theory, and the theory for evaluating preferences involving alternatives with multiple attributes. We also present a reasonably complete discussion of the worth-assessment procedure

With the above material as background, we examine the relationship between the worth-assessment procedure and decision analysis : and identify worth assessment as a particular form for evaluating multi-attributed preferences. In discussing worth assessment as a particular form for treating the multi-attribute problem, we point out some of the similarities and dissimilarities between the utility approach and the worth-assessment approach. By discussing worth assessment from this viewpoint and examining it in the light of modern utility theory, we prvoide some mathematical justification which has been lacking in the past and has opened the door for some criticism of worth assessment.

Meta-CASE: Is the game worth the candle?

The current generation of CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools is too inflexible to provide adequate modelling support. One of the proposed solutions to this problem is the development of so-called CASE shells. A CASE shell is a method independent CASE tool, which may be instantiated with a specific method to become a CASE tool supporting that method. As such, a CASE shell provides complete flexibility. This paper does not address the benefits of CASE shells, as they are completely clear, but focuses on the feasibility of this concept from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view.     

Creating Sounding Underground

Sounding Underground is an online interactive sonic environment that links sound excerpts from the metros of London, Paris and Mexico City, as selected by commuters, as meaningful moments of sound from their commuting routine. Designed as a navigation structure, the environment draws on identifiable architectonic spaces such as entrances and corridors, but also incorporates more abstract ‘spaces’ based on memorable sounds that passengers had in common. The creation of the environment focused on the perception of social, political and symbolic experiences, and was derived from an iterative ethnographic and artistic practice which involved self-reflection, interviews, recordings of and listening to the journeys, and commuters' selections of sounds. This article describes the process of creation through the abstraction of a physical space, as well as the responses the work has evoked in the users and the academic community. It exemplifies the transdisciplinary nature of practice-based research involving the creative use of digital technologies.

目前国内煤矿井下综采工作面监控系统普遍存在着各监控子系统运行相对独立、通信实时性差,稳定性不高等诸多问题.因此,基于煤矿井下综采工作面的工艺流程,以实现井下主要生产设备工况的在线监测与控制、环境参数的采集与监测和故障处理为目的,通过建立西门子S7-300系列PLC的主控站与现场层的智能从站,研究设计了一套应用于煤矿井下的数字化综采工作面监控系统.经实际测试表明本系统稳定性好、可靠性高,对煤矿的安全高效生产具有不可替代的作用.

针对煤炭自燃发火的监测问题,提出了将无线传感器网络技术应用于矿井煤炭自燃动态监测中的方案,介绍了无线传感器网络的体系结构、无线传感器网络节点的体系结构及软件设计等。     

How much is control knowledge worth?: A primitive example

The most basic activity performed by an intelligent agent is deciding what to do next. Usually, the decision takes the form of selecting, from among many applicable methods, one method to try first, or opting to expand a particular node in a simple search. The most primitive case is selecting between two independent alternatives. Below, this case is examined and the value of the control knowledge that makes the decision is determined. Another result derived is the sensitivity of the expected value of control knowledge as a function of the accuracy of the parameters used to make these control decisions.

This paper treats the problem of assessing utilities and worths over multi-attributed alternatives. Worth assessment is a systematic approach for evaluating complex alternatives under certainty. By incorporating an element of risk into the problem, worths may be transformed into utilities which are suitable for use in decision making. The role of hierarchies in worth assessment is emphasized. Several independence assumptions are discussed with restrict the multi-attributed utility functions to relatively simple forms, specifically the additive and quasi-additive or multiplicative form. Various techniques for evaluating milti-attributed utilities subject to such restrictions are surveyed. Again the role of hierarchies is emphasized. By keeping the various attributes in their proper structural relationship, the assessment of multi-attributed utilities can often be facilitated.
