BACKGROUND: ‘Hami’ melon is susceptible to softening during postharvest storage at ambient temperature, which enhances postharvest deterioration and limits transportation and storage. To look for a method of softening control, the effect of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) on regulating postharvest softening of ‘Hami’ melon fruit was investigated. RESULTS: 1‐MCP treatment at 1 µL L?1 significantly reduced ethylene production and maintained higher levels of fruit firmness. It also markedly inhibited the accumulation of 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid (ACC) and maintained lower activities of ACC synthase and ACC oxidase. In addition, 1‐MCP treatment reduced the activities of fruit‐softening enzymes such as pectin methyl esterase, polygalacturonase, endo‐1,4‐β‐glucanase and β‐galactosidase. CONCLUSION: 1‐MCP was effective in suppressing ethylene production and delaying fruit softening in ‘Hami’ melon by decreasing the activities of ethylene biosynthesis enzymes and inhibiting fruit‐softening enzymes. Ethylene production, quality attributes and aroma compounds were analysed to determine the maturity evolution of ‘Big Top’ nectarines and ‘Royal Glory’ peaches at harvest dates ranging from 89 to 116 days after full bloom (DAFB) for nectarines and from 85 to 112 DAFB for peaches. These cultivars are highly coloured even in the early stages of maturity. However, the two cultivars had different patterns of ethylene production, this being slower in nectarines than in peaches. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to provide partial visualisation of the complete data set in a reduced dimension plot. Separation of the two cultivars can be shown by means of a two‐dimensional plot of the samples. Although only some aroma compounds are slightly correlated with quality parameters, when aroma volatiles were included in the PCA, the aroma compound set allowed both cultivars to be classified into three stages of maturity: immature, intermediate and fully mature. Compounds such as propanol, hexyl acetate, 2‐methylpropyl acetate, limonene, butanol, (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate, buthyl acetate, linalool, ethanol, propyl acetate and ethyl acetate are the most important volatiles for ‘Big Top’ nectarines. It is suggested that the presence of these compounds can be used to indicate when the fruit should be harvested. The presence of γ‐decalactone, δ‐octalactone, γ‐octalactone, ethyl butyrate, hexanal and (E)‐2‐hexenol can be used to indicate the harvesting maturity stage for ‘Royal Glory’ peaches. The optimum maturity date for harvest would be 105–107 DAFB for ‘Big Top’ nectarines and 93–95 DAFB for ‘Royal Glory’ peaches. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In some pear varieties like ‘Conference’, 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) treatment often impairs the ripening process indefinitely and the pears remain ‘evergreen’. To better understand this behaviour, the influence of the harvest date, orchard location and year on the effectiveness of 1‐MCP treatment was investigated. RESULTS: Pear softening was inhibited by 1‐MCP treatment and the effectiveness of the treatment depended on harvest date, orchard location and year. Differences in the rate of softening in 1‐MCP‐treated pears depended mainly on the fruit physiological maturity at the moment of 1‐MCP treatment. Accordingly, the combination of the Streif index and ethylene production at harvest appeared to be able to predict the evergreen behaviour. Treated pears with a low Streif index (<0.8) and high ethylene production at harvest (≥0.23 µL kg?1 h?1) maintain significantly high firmness but did soften during shelf life, reaching acceptable eating quality. CONCLUSION: Evergreen behaviour was mainly influenced by the initial fruit maturity and especially by the ability of the fruit to produce ethylene at the moment of treatment. More mature fruit were able to overcome the inhibition by 1‐MCP, and the solution to prevent evergreen behaviour therefore lies in the adequate determination of harvest maturity. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The possible role of abscisic acid (ABA) and peel colour in chilling tolerance of ‘Fortune’ mandarins has been examined. Fruit stored at 2·5°C, but not at 12°C, showed pitting damage. The degree of damage changed considerably during development and maturity from November until May. Green fruit were more tolerant to chilling injury (CI). After colour break, chilling susceptibility increased from the beginning of December until January and February (the coolest season during the growing period) and declined towards May. This trend did not parallel changes in fruit colour index or free and bound ABA levels, which increased from November until May. At the time of chloroplast transformation to chromoplast a noticeable shift in free but not in bound ABA occurred. During storage, free ABA levels increased in fruits stored at 12°C, but not at 2·5°C. Changes in ABA with storage temperature depended on the stage of maturity of the fruits, but not on their susceptibility to CI. It has also been shown that there was no relationship between ABA content following exposure to 37°C and chilling tolerance. At all stages of maturity, the susceptibility of the fruits to CI and the free ABA levels of the flavedo decreased after conditioning the fruits for 3 days at 37°C. After storage at 2·5°C, the ABA levels of the conditioned fruit were similar or even lower than those of non-conditioned fruit. Treatment of fruit for 3 days with 10 μl litre-1 ethylene increased free ABA about four times, whereas bound ABA remained nearly constant. This treatment enhanced cold-induced peel damage after prolonged storage. Thus, the ethylene-induced changes in free ABA appear not to be related to the induced changes in chilling susceptibility. The results obtained indicated, therefore, that free and bound ABA appear not to be involved on the adaptative mechanism developed in ‘Fortune’ mandarins to cope with chilling stress. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Chitosan (CTS), as an ideal coating material, has been used for post‐harvest treatment of fruits and vegetables. The effects of coating with 1.5% CTS, alone or combined with 10 mmol L?1 ascorbic acid (AsA), on post‐harvest quality and core browning (CB) incidence in ‘Yali’ pears during storage at room temperature (25 ± 1 °C) were investigated in this study. RESULTS: It was found that both CTS coating and CTS + AsA coating delayed the increase of weight loss, retained greater firmness, total soluble solids and titratable acidity content than controls; coatings decreased respiration rate and membrane permeability, and also effectively inhibited CB after 60 days of storage. Compared with CTS coating alone, CTS + AsA coating increased these beneficial effects and also helped to retain a much higher AsA content and the activities of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase). CONCLUSION: The CTS coating has the potential to maintain post‐harvest quality and control CB which is the main problem in ‘Yali’ pears during storage. The CTS + AsA coating has more effective application in this study, which could not only be due to reducing the respiration rate and inhibiting the senescence process, but also to increasing the antioxidant capability of the fruit.

BACKGROUND: Some European pear varieties treated with 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) often remain ‘evergreen’, meaning that their ripening process is blocked and does not resume after removal from cold storage. In this work this was confirmed also to be the case in ‘Conference’ pears. To reverse the blockage of ripening 1‐MCP treatments combined with external exogenous ethylene were tested. RESULTS: 1‐MCP treatment of ‘Conference’ pears is very effective in delaying ripening and, more specifically, softening. The same 1‐MCP concentration in different experimental years caused a different response. The higher dose of 1‐MCP (600 nL L?1) always resulted in irreversible blockage of ripening, whereas the behaviour of fruit receiving a lower dose (300 nL L?1) depended on the year, and this did not depend on maturity at harvest or on storage conditions. Simultaneous exposure to 1‐MCP and exogenous ethylene significantly affected fruit ripening, allowing significant softening to occur but at a lower rate compared with control fruit. CONCLUSION: The application of exogenous ethylene and 1‐MCP simultaneously after harvest permitted restoration of the ripening process after storage in ‘Conference’ pears, extending the possibility of marketing and consumption. BACKGROUND: In the fresh apple market fruit must be crisp and juicy to attract buyers to purchase again. However, recent studies have shown that consumer acceptability could be further enhanced by improving taste. This study evaluates the use of fruit dry matter concentration (DMC) as a new fruit quality metric for apple. RESULTS: Fruit samples collected at harvest, in the two main fruit growing regions of New Zealand, showed a variation in mean fruit DMC from 130 to 156 g kg?1 with ‘Royal Gala’ and with ‘Scifresh’ from 152 to 176 g kg?1. Individual fruit DMC showed a larger range, from 108 to 189 g kg?1 with ‘Royal Gala’ and from 125 to 201 g kg?1 with ‘Scifresh’. Fruit DMC proved a more reliable predictor of total soluble solids after 12 weeks of air storage at 0.5 °C than TSS at harvest for both ‘Royal Gala’ and ‘Scifresh’. Fruit DMC was also positively related to flesh firmness, although this relationship was not as strong as that seen with soluble solids and was more dependent on cultivar. Consumer studies showed that consumer preference was positively related to fruit DMC of ‘Royal Gala’ apples. CONCLUSION: Fruit DMC can therefore be measured before or at harvest, and be used to predict the sensory potential for the fruit after storage. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A novel nanopackaging was synthesised by coating polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film with nano‐ZnO powder, and its effects on the preservation quality of fresh‐cut ‘Fuji’ apple were investigated at 4 °C for 12 days. Compared with the control (PVC film), nanopackaging significantly reduced the fruit decay rate (P < 0.05), as well as decreased the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) from 74.9 nmol g?1 in the control to 53.9 nmol g?1 in the nanopackaging. Cutting caused an increase in ethylene level, suggesting wound‐induced ethylene production, which was suppressed in nanopackaging. Both the polyphenoloxidase and pyrogallol peroxidase activities were decreased in nanopackaging fruit. The initial appearance of apple slices was retained, and the browning index was prevented in nanopackaging samples, which was only 23.9, much lower than the control of 31.7 on day 12. These results indicated that nano‐ZnO active packaging could be a viable alternative to common technologies for improving the shelf‐life properties of ‘Fuji’ apples as a fresh‐cut product.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A wide range of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) concentrations as well as various treatment durations have been studied in tomatoes by different researchers. However, little is known about interaction of 1‐MCP doses and maturity stages of tomatoes. Therefore the effects of different concentrations of 1‐MCP on storage and postharvest quality of ‘Zorro’ tomatoes harvested at mature green or pink maturity stages were investigated in a 2‐year trial study. RESULTS: Higher concentrations of 1‐MCP delayed and/or inhibited all parameters related to fruit ripening, such as lycopene, chlorophyll, surface color, polygalacturonase (PG) activity and soluble solids content/titratable acidity (SSC/TA), and these effects were greater in tomatoes harvested at the mature green stages. Lower concentrations of 1‐MCP slightly reduced the loss in general quality features compared with untreated tomatoes. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that 1‐MCP, especially at higher doses, is effective for delaying ripening of mature green tomatoes. Mature green fruits treated with 1000 nL L?1 1‐MCP were stored for 35 days without significant decreases in quality characteristics such as elasticity, surface color and SSC/TA with certain physiological processes (ethylene production, PG activity, lycopene synthesis). Ethylene production, shelf life and fruit quality of Cavendish bananas (cv. Williams), held at different pre‐ripening storage temperatures (5 °C, 10 °C or 15 °C) prior to ethylene and/or 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) application, were determined and compared. Levels of ethylene production during ripening were highest for control fruit that had been stored at 5 °C followed by 10 °C and then 15 °C. 1‐MCP treatment (at 300 nL L?1) had no effect on ethylene production of fruit that had been stored at 10 °C by day 10 of storage, but ethylene production was significantly higher for fruit that had been stored at 15 °C and lower for those stored at 5 °C before 1‐MCP treatment. 1‐MCP also increased shelf life to a greater extent when applied to fruit that had been stored at 10 °C or 15 °C. Even though 1‐MCP had no significant effect on under peel chilling injury, it increased discolouration significantly, regardless of storage temperature. Firmness of 1‐MCP‐treated fruit decreased significantly compared to the control when fruit were held at 5 °C or 15 °C prior to ripening (and 1‐MCP application) but had no effect on fruit stored at 10 °C before ripening. These results indicate that pre‐ripening storage temperature affects ripening, shelf life and quality in both ethylene and 1‐MCP‐treated bananas.

The potential use of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) alone or as a supplement to cold storage to delay the softening of ‘Brown Turkey’ figs (Ficus carica L.) was studied. Figs were treated with 0, 0.25, 0.5 or 5 µl l?1 1‐MCP at 25 °C for 8 h and stored at 20 °C until evaluated. Figs treated with 0.5 or 5 µl l?1 1‐MCP had higher ethylene production and respiration rates but slower softening than untreated fruit and those treated with 0.25 µl l?1 1‐MCP. Early‐harvested firm figs and late‐harvested soft figs were untreated or treated with 0.5 or 5 µl l?1 1‐MCP at 25 °C and stored at 0 °C for 19 days. Firm figs treated with 1‐MCP showed an early peak in ethylene synthesis, higher respiration rate and were firmer than control fruit. In contrast, soft figs did not respond to 1‐MCP except for a late increase in respiration rates of fruit treated with 5 µl l?1 1‐MCP. 1‐MCP appeared to have a relatively limited effect on slowing ripening of ‘Brown Turkey’ figs and its effect was influenced by ripening stage. BACKGROUND: Flesh reddening has been described as one of the manifestations of plum fruits to low‐temperature storage for prolonged periods. The influence of factors such as ethylene and delayed storage has not been studied to date. In order to assess that, plum cv. ‘Royal Diamond’ fruits were (a) stored at 5 °C (control), (b) held at 20 °C for 2 days before storage at 5 °C (delayed storage) or (c) maintained at 5 °C under 15 µL L?1 ethylene. Fruits were then transferred to 20 °C and ethylene, respiration, weight loss, firmness, soluble solids content, acidity, flesh reddening, anthocyanin accumulation and phenylalanine ammonia‐lyase (PAL) activity were determined. RESULTS: Delayed storage fruits showed more extensive flesh reddening than control fruits, with increased PAL activity and higher anthocyanin accumulation. Symptoms were expressed more markedly when fruits were stored at 5 °C in ethylene. CONCLUSION: Results indicated that the fruit ripening stage is a critical factor determining the susceptibility of ‘Royal Diamond’ plums to flesh reddening. Fruits continuously exposed to ethylene showed a dramatic increase in reddening, suggesting that ethylene contributes to the development of the disorder. BACKGROUND: The main aim of this work was to define how 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) treatment affects apple fruit quality by two complementary approaches. RESULTS: The results confirmed that 1‐MCP treatment maintained firmness and acidity of the fruit. Multivariate analysis distinguished treated and untreated fruits and showed that a relationship exists between 1‐MCP treatment and firmness, and also between 1‐MCP and the physiological disorder, ‘diffuse skin browning’ (DSB). Relationships for acidity were low and absent for soluble‐solids concentration (SSC). The PCA model built only with 1‐MCP treated fruit showed a positive correlation between DSB incidence and firmness, and a negative correlation between DSB and SSC or a* values. Collectively, these correlations indicated that the more immature fruits are more susceptible to DSB. This last model also characterised acidity as the best parameter to discriminate the 1‐MCP fruits. CONCLUSION: It is the first time that such a comparative study has been conducted on 1‐MCP treated fruits. The results are of interest because they (1) help to discriminate treated and untreated fruits, and (2) allow discrimination of 1‐MCP‐treated fruit during storage. BACKGROUND: Harvest date clearly determines the postharvest storage behaviour and sensitivity of fruit to physiological disorders. Generally fruit are picked following their maturity indexes but often these indexes poorly represent the physiological state of the fruit. With this in mind, this work aimed to determine a biochemical marker capable of predicting on‐tree maturation in ‘Golden Smoothee’ apples. Changes in the non‐enzymatic and in enzymatic antioxidant potential of fruit were assessed for different harvest dates. RESULTS: Significant differences in antioxidant levels, especially ascorbate and catalase, were found. These changes were related to climatic variations, especially relating to temperature, that appeared to determine the capability of the fruit to produce ethylene. Fruit exposed to higher temperature produced less ethylene and exhibited a significant delay in the induction of their climacteric. In both seasons, changes in quality parameters during on‐tree ripening were not related to the capability of the fruit to produce ethylene, but rather to endogenous levels of antioxidants, especially catalase and ascorbate, at the earliest picking date. CONCLUSION: We hypothesize that ascorbate and antioxidant activity play a role in changes in maturity patterns exhibited by apples in orchards. Both parameters appear to be interesting markers to follow these changes. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Low‐temperature breakdown (LTB), a disorder inducing quality loss, during and after cold storage of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit was investigated. Harvested kiwifruits during fruit maturation or after delayed storage (DS) at 20 °C for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks and 1 µL L?1 ethylene treatment for 24 h were stored at ? 0.5 °C for 24 weeks and additional ripening at 20 °C for 5 days. Fruit quality indices and LTB incidence and severity were determined before and after treatments. RESULTS: Harvested fruits ripened during maturation, DS and after ethylene treatment. After storage and shelf life, fruits of all treatments were at complete ripening stage. LTB incidence of early harvested fruits was high, while that of fruits of the mid (third) and late harvests was low. Fruits of the third harvest date showed progressively increased LTB incidence with increasing duration of DS to as high as 95–100% after 4 weeks. Ethylene‐treated fruits showed a comparable increase in LTB to that corresponding to 2–3 weeks of DS. CONCLUSION: In contrast to fruit maturation, postharvest (after harvest and before storage) DS at non‐chilling temperature and ethylene treatment advanced the ripening of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit and resulted in increased LTB incidence. Nitrogen content and composition of amino acids in juice and rind of navel oranges were studied. The compared varieties were ‘Navelina’ ‘Washington Navel’ and ‘Navelate’, early, mid-season and late types, respectively. Total N content in juice increased during the season with values from about 60 to near 100 mg 100 ml?1 in Navelina and ‘Washington Navel’ and from 60 to about 80 mg 100 ml?l in ‘Navelate’; amino N increased from 30 to 60 mg 100 ml?lapproximately in the three varieties. The total N content in rind was quite similar in all cases, with values that decreased with time from 1 to around 0·6 g 100 g?l dry weight (DW), 50–60% corresponding to the protein N. The main free amino acids in juice and rind at different maturity stages are tabulated. Proline represents at maturity around 50% of the total free amino acids in rind, with values near to 1·5 mmol 100 ml?l in juice and over 5·0 mmol 100 g?1 DW in rind. Total protein amino acids in rind decreased during maturation, reaching final values of about 20 mmol 100 g?1 DW. Differences in composition among the three studied varieties are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) on antioxidative enzyme and internal browning (IB) incidence of two European pear cultivars ‘Shahmiveh’ and ‘Sebri’ stored at 0.5 °C were investigated. Ethylene production of ‘Sebri’ was delayed by 1‐MCP but suppressed in ‘Shahmiveh’. IB increased in both cultivars, with a higher level of the incidence in ‘Shahmiveh’, and was reduced by 1‐MCP. Activities of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase, but not superoxide dismutase (SOD), decreased in untreated fruit during the first 40 days. 1‐MCP had little effect on SOD activity or on total phenolics. Polyphenoloxidase activity did not increase over time in 1‐MCP‐treated fruit of the IB sensitive ‘Shahmiveh’, and the effect was inconsistent for ‘Sebri’. Ascorbic acid (AA) levels in 1‐MCP‐treated fruit of both cultivars declined at a lower rate compared with untreated fruit during storage, but the reduction in AA levels was faster in ‘Shahmiveh’ compared with ‘Sebri’. Also, the effects of 1‐MCP on antioxidative systems may be related to IB development.  相似文献

Overripening of Chinese jujube (Zizyphus jujuba M) fruit at the postharvest stage usually results in a dramatic decline in quality. The role of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) and gibberellic acid (GA) in fruit ripening of Chinese jujube during storage in relation to quality was investigated. Fruit ripening of jujube was significantly enhanced by ethylene, whereas rates of respiration and ethylene production of the fruit were reduced by 1‐MCP. Treatment with 1‐MCP or GA delayed the decreases in firmness and vitamin C and reduced the level of ethanol. Furthermore, the effectiveness of 1‐MCP was improved by replicate treatments during storage at 20 or 2 °C. In addition, treatment with GA + 1‐MCP resulted in additive beneficial effects on ripening inhibition of the fruit. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
