Rapid living free‐radical polymerization of methyl acrylate under 60Co γ‐ray irradiation in the presence of benzyl 1H‐imidazole‐1‐carbodithioate at room temperature is reported. The results showed that the polymerization is a fast living process, and that the molecular weight of the polymer is as high as 39 600 g mol?1 at 68 % conversion with Mw/Mn = 1.09 within 68 min. The polymerization rate was markedly influenced by the structures of thiocarbonylthio compounds. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) is a versatile hydrophobic macromolecule usually preferred in the development of new materials for a host of applications. PtBA homopolymers with well‐defined structure and controlled molecular weight in a wide range were successfully synthesized via radiation‐induced reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the presence of a trithiocarbonate type RAFT agent. The polymerization of tBA was performed under 60Co γ‐irradiation in the presence of 2‐(dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (DDMAT) as the RAFT agent in toluene at room temperature with three [tBA]/[DDMAT] ratios (400, 600 and 1000) and different irradiation times. Radiation‐induced polymerization of tBA displayed controlled free radical polymerization characteristics: a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ~ 1.1), pseudo first order kinetics and controlled molecular weights. The system followed the RAFT polymerization mechanism even at very low amounts of RAFT agent ([tBA]/[DDMAT] = 1000), and molecular weights up to 113 900 with narrow dispersity (Ð =1.06) were obtained. PtBA was further hydrolysed into different amphiphilic PtBA‐co‐poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) copolymers by low (27.5%) and high (77.3%) degrees of hydrolysis. The pH sensitivity of the two copolymers was investigated by dynamic light scattering at pH 2 and pH 9 (above and below the pKa value of PAA) and their hydrodynamic diameters and zeta potential values were determined. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Acrylic emulsion pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were synthesized by the copolymerization of n‐butyl acrylate with various levels of 2‐ethyl hexyl acrylate (2EHA) and a small constant amount of acrylic acid. The effect of varying the n‐butyl acrylate/2EHA monomer composition on the kinetic behavior of the polymerization and the characteristics of the copolymers prepared in a batch process were investigated. The results showed that increasing the amount of 2EHA in the monomer caused the polymerization rate and the glass‐transition temperature of the acrylic copolymers to decrease. Increasing the amount of 2EHA caused the gel content of the copolymers to decrease, reaching a minimum at 50 wt %; thereafter, the gel content increased at higher 2EHA levels. For the acrylic emulsion, the peel‐fracture energy of the PSAs decreased as the amount of 2EHA in the monomer was increased up to 50 wt %. At higher 2EHA levels, the peel‐fracture energy was relatively constant. Interestingly, a synergistic effect of increased shear resistance at 25 wt % 2EHA was observed without a significant trade‐off in terms of the peel and tack properties. This behavior was attributed to a good interconnection between the microgels and the free polymer chains inside the contacting particles in the adhesive film. Cooperation between various levels of 2EHA in the copolymer structure simultaneously changed the crosslink molecular weight (Mc) of the microgels and the entanglement molecular weight (Me) of the free chains in the adhesive network morphology. The adhesive performance of the PSAs was found to be correlated with their Mc/Me values as the 2EHA proportion was varied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) onto chitosan was tried via a new protection‐graft‐deprotection procedure. About 6‐O‐maleoyl‐N‐phthaloyl‐chitosan was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis (FT‐IR) and 1H‐NMR. Because the intermediate 6‐O‐maleoyl‐N‐phthaloyl‐chitosan was soluble in organic solvents, the graft copolymerization was carried out in a homogeneous system. Grafting was initiated by γ‐irradiation. The graft extent was dependent on the irradiation dose and the concentration of BA monomer, and copolymers with grafting above 100% were readily prepared. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymer poly (butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene (PBA-b-PSt) was prepared by two steps in a complete emulsion system, using DPE (1, 1-diphenylethylene) as free radical control agent. In the first step, butyl acrylate (BA), initiator potassium peroxodisulfate (KPS) and DPE were emulsion polymerized to form P(BA-DPE) precursor. Then the precursor was heated in the presence of a second monomer styrene (St), and block copolymer was synthesized successfully. The structures, molecular weight of precursor and block copolymer were characterized by FTIR, UV–VIS, 1H-NMR and SEC/MALLS. Influence of DPE on polymerization kinetics was also investigated. Meantime, thermal properties of block copolymer were analyzed by TGA and DSC.  相似文献

Two monodisperse graft copolymers, poly(4‐methylstyrene)‐graft‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) [number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 37,500, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (Mw/Mn) = 1.12] and polystyrene‐graft‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (Mn = 72,800, Mw/Mn = 1.12), were prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate catalyzed with Cu(I) halides. As macroinitiators, poly{(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐[(4‐bromomethyl)styrene]} and poly{styrene‐co‐[4‐(1‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy)ethyl)styrene]}, carrying 40% of the bromoalkyl functionalities along the chain, were used. The dependencies of molecular parameters on monomer conversion fulfilled the criteria for controlled polymerizations. In contrast, the dependencies of monomer conversion versus time were nonideal; possible causes were examined. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 86: 2930–2936, 2002  相似文献

A new technique (ultrasonic irradiation) has been employed to prepare poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) PBMA/γ‐Al2O3 nanocomposites, taking advantages of the multiple effects of ultrasonic irradiation, such as dispersion, pulverization and activation. When subjected to ultrasonic irradiation, n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) is polymerized to form poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) latex without any chemical initiators, and the monomer conversion reaches 72.5% in 25 min. At an appropriate pH, surfactant bilayers are formed through electrostatic interactions between γ‐Al2O3 nanoparticles and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), which adsorb BMA. After ultrasonic induced polymerization of BMA in the presence of nanoparticles of γ‐Al2O3, the γ‐Al2O3 nanoparticles are encapsulated by PBMA shells formed. The influence of factors such as pH, surfactant concentration and the nanoparticle content is investigated. The FTIR spectra show that there are still polymers tightly adsorbed by nanoparticles even after extraction by acetone for 72 h. The difference observed in the XPS spectra of nanocomposite residues and the pure γ‐Al2O3 nanoparticles may indicate some interactions between γ‐Al2O3 nanoparticles and the PBMA matrix. Furthermore, the feasibility of SDS bilayer formation and encapsulating polymerization is proven by XPS characterization. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In a number of studies it has been shown that 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinooxy (TEMPO)‐mediated polymerization of acrylates is not facile. Therefore, the object of the study reported here was to prepare poly[styrene‐block‐(tert‐butyl acrylate)] (PS‐b‐PtBA) block copolymers using 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator as an initiator, in the presence of small amounts of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The kinetic analysis and the effect of DMF on the reaction mechanism are also discussed. RESULTS: PS‐b‐PtBA block copolymer was prepared through polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) initiated by 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator at 135 °C. The polymerization rate of tBA could be increased by adding a small amount of DMF, and the number average molecular weight of the PtBA block in PS‐b‐PtBA reached 10 000 g mol?1 with narrow polydispersity. The activation rate constant kact?tBA of alkoxyamine increased and the recombination rate constant krec?tBA decreased with increasing DMF concentration. CONCLUSION: DMF was shown to be a rate‐enhancing additive for the polymerization of tBA using a 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator. From the kinetic analysis, it was concluded that the improvement of polymerization with the addition of DMF was due to an increase in kact?tBA and a decrease in krec?tBA. [2,6‐Bis(4‐hydroxybenzylidene)cyclohexanone] (HBC) was prepared by reacting cyclohexanone and p‐hydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of acid catalyst. Acrylated derivative of HBC, 4‐{[‐3‐(4‐hydroxybenzylidene)‐2‐oxocyclohexylidene]methyl}phenyl acrylate (HBA), was prepared by reacting HBC with acryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. Copolymers of HBA with styrene (S) and methyl acrylate (MA) of different feed compositions were carried out by solution polymerization technique by using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) under nitrogen atmosphere. All monomers and polymers were characterized by using IR and NMR techniques. Reactivity ratios of the monomers present in the polymer chain were evolved by using Finnman–Ross (FR), Kelen–Tudos (KT), and extended Kelen–Tudos (ex‐KT) methods. Average values of reactivity were achieved by the following three methods: r1 (S) = 2.36 ± 0.45 and r2 (HBA) = 0.8 ± 0.31 for poly(S‐co‐HBA); r1 = 1.62 ± 0.06 (MA); and r2 = 0.12 ± 0.07 (HBA) for poly(MA‐co‐HBA). The photocrosslinking property of the polymers was done by using UV absorption spectroscopic technique. The rate of photocrosslinking was enhanced compared to that of the homopolymers, when the HBA was copolymerized with S and MA. Thermal stability and molecular weights (Mw and Mn) were determined for the polymer samples. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 2494–2503, 2004  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is considered to be one of the better and easier synthetic tools for the preparation of polymers with controlled molecular weights and polydispersities. Ambient temperature ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) was studied in a detailed manner with ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBrB) and tert‐butyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (tBuBrB) as the initiators for three different degrees of polymerization. RESULTS: Details pertaining to the kinetics of polymerization using different initiators are reported. It is observed that dimethylsulfoxide accelerates the polymerization at room temperature. The use of Cu(II) as the deactivator produces very narrow dispersity polymers. A diblock copolymer, poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate), was synthesized from the poly(tBA) macroinitiator demonstrating the controlled living nature of the polymerizations. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of polymerization is more rapid with a secondary initiator (ethyl 2‐bromopropionate) compared to the tertiary initiators EBrB and tBuBrB. From the detailed kinetic results it is observed that tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine was a better ligand compared to tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine in terms of achieving controlled polymerization. AB diblock copolymers were prepared by use of poly(tert‐butyl (meth)acrylate) (PtBA/PtBMA) as monofunctional macroinitiator in atom transfer radical polymerization of various (meth)acrylates (methyl, butyl) in the presence of the CuBr/N, N, N′, N′, N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system. Then using the diblock copolymer as macroinitiator with a bromine atom at the chain end, ABC and ABA triblock copolymers containing at least one PtBA or PtBMA segment were synthesized via polymerization of the selected (meth)acrylic monomer. Gel permeation chromatography was applied to determine molecular weights and polydispersity indices. The latter, for block copolymers prepared without deactivator addition, were in the range 1.2‐1.6 with a high degree of polymerization (150‐500). The chemical compositions of the block copolymers were characterized with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The kind of combined segments and their lengths influenced the glass transition temperature (Tg) determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) without added initiator has been studied. The experimental results show that high conversion of BA can be reached in a short time by employing an ultrasonic irradiation technique with a high purge rate of N2. The viscosity average molecular weight of poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) obtained reaches 5.24 × 106 g mol?1. The ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization is dynamic and complicated, with polymerization of monomer and degradation of polymer occurring simultaneously. An increase in ultrasound intensity leads to an increase in polymerization rate in the range of cavitation threshold and cavitation peak values. Lower monomer concentration favours enhancement of the polymerization rate. 1H NMR, 13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopies reveal that there are some branches and slight crosslinking, and also carboxyl groups in PBA. Ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization offers a new route for the preparation of nanosized latex particles; the particle size of PBA prepared is around 50–200 nm as measured by transmission electron microscopy. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

New polymer colloids based on the saccharide monomer, using of 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐α‐D ‐glucofuranose (3‐MDG), were prepared by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization, a widely used industrial process. The copolymerization of 3‐MDG and butyl acrylate (BA), by the monomer‐addition technique, at 70°C, using sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) as an initiator, was investigated. The influence of some reaction parameters, such as the type and concentration of the surfactants as well as the monomer addition rate (Rm) on the polymerization rate (Rp), the colloidal properties, and the stability of the latexes, was studied. It was found that under starved‐feed conditions the polymerization rate and the particle size (D) increased with an increasing rate of monomer addition. The weight‐average molecular weight (M w) also increased by enhancing Rm and a narrower molecular weight distribution was obtained. Furthermore, the type and the concentration of the surfactants strongly influenced the particle size and its distribution. The effect of the seed stage on the particle size and its distribution was also investigated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 2091–2102, 2003  相似文献

Two latices—the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) system (PA latex) and the PDMS/poly(vinyl acetate‐co‐butyl acrylate) system (PB latex)—were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization, and PA/PB complex latices were obtained through the interparticle complexation of the PA latex with the PB latex. In addition, for the further study of the interparticle complexation of the PA latex with the PB latex, copolymer latices [PDMS/methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate‐co‐vinyl acetate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (PC)] were prepared according to the monomer recipe of the complex latices and the polymerization process of the component latices. The properties of the obtained polymer latices and complex latices were investigated with surface‐tension, contact‐angle, and viscosity measurements. The mechanical properties of the coatings obtained from the latices were investigated with tensile‐strength measurements. The results showed that, in comparison with the two component latices (PA latex and PB latex) and the corresponding copolymer latices (PC latices), the PA/PB complex latices had lower surface tension, lower viscosities, and better wettability to different substrates. The tensile strengths of the coatings obtained from the complex latices were higher than the tensile strengths of the coatings from the two component latices and copolymer latices. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silicone‐modified styrene–butyl acrylate copolymer latex was synthesized by emulsion copolymerization by using octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), styrene, and butyl acrylate as raw materials, potassium persulfate as initiator and propylmethacrylate triethoxysilane (KH‐570) as crosslinking agent. The infrared spectra studies showed that the vinyl monomers were completely copolymerized with D4. The prepared silicone‐modified copolymer latex with the interpenetrating polymer networks tended to have higher stability, and better toluene and water resistance than styrene–butyl acrylate latex. The glossiness of coated paper was improved with silicone‐modified copolymer latex, and it was at a maximum when D4 was about 3% of total monomers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The transparent poly(butyl acrylate‐co‐maleic anhydride)/silica [P(BA‐co‐MAn)/SiO2] has been successfully prepared from butyl acrylate‐maleic anhydride copolymer P(BA‐co‐MAn) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by an in situ sol–gel process. Triethoxysilyl group can be readily incorporated into P(BA‐co‐MAn) as pendant side chains by the aminolysis of maleic anhydride unit of copolymer with APTES, and then organic polymer/silica hybrid materials with covalent bonds between two phases can be formed via the hydrolytic polycondensation of triethoxysilyl group‐functionalized polymer with TEOS. It was found that the amount of APTES could dramatically affect the gel time of sol–gel system, the sol fraction of resultant hybrid materials, and the thermal properties of hybrid materials obtained. The decomposition temperature of hybrid materials and the final residual weight of thermogravimetry of hybrid both increase with the increasing of APTES. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the morphology of hybrid materials prepared in the presence of APTES was a co‐continual phase structure. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Syntheses of monodisperse poly[(styrene)‐co‐(n‐butyl acrylate)] and poly[(styrene)‐co‐(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate)] were carried out by dispersion polymerization. The reactions were performed in the mixed solvent of ethanol–water in the presence of azo‐bisisobutyronitrile and poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as the initiator and dispersant, respectively. The effects of reaction parameters, that is the type and concentration of dispersant, ratio of the mixed solvent, reaction temperature, agitation rate, monomer composition between styrene and n‐butyl acrylate or 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate, crosslinking agent and reaction time on the particle size, size distribution and average molecular weights of the resulting copolymer were thoroughly investigated. The resulting copolymer particles were smooth on their spherical surface and the sizes were in the range 0.6–1.8 µm with a narrow size distribution. In most cases, a correlation between small particle sizes with high average molecular weights was observed. The average particle size generally increased with increasing reaction temperature, time and acrylate monomer content. In contrast, the particle size decreased as the molecular weight, concentration of dispersant, polarity of the medium or agitation rate was increased. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers can be controlled by the mole ratio of the comonomer. The Tg values decreased when the content of acrylate monomers in the copolymer increased, and Tg values of the synthesized copolymer were in the range 66–102 °C. Instead of using n‐butyl acrylate monomer in the copolymerization, 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate copolymerization with styrene resulted in insignificant changes in the particle sizes but there were significant decreases in Tg values. In this study, the monodisperse particles can be obtained by monitoring the appropriate conditions regarding PVP K‐30 (2–8 wt%), ethanol/water (90/10 wt%), the reaction temperature (70 °C) and the agitation rate (100 rpm). © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) with 1‐octene (1‐Oct) was conducted in the presence of free radical initiator, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) using heterogeneous Lewis acid, acidic alumina. The polymers obtained were transparent and highly viscous liquids. The copolymer composition calculated from 1H NMR showed alkene incorporation in the range of 10–61%. The monomodal nature of chromatographic curves corresponding to the molecular weight distribution in gel permeation chromatography (GPC) further confirmed that the polymers obtained are true copolymers. The number–average molecular weights (Mn) of the copolymers were in the range of 1.1 × 104–1.6 × 104 with polydispersity index of 1.75–2.29. The effects of varying the acidic alumina amount, time of polymerization, and monomer infeed on the incorporation of 1‐Oct in the polymer chain were studied. Increased 1‐Oct infeed led to its higher inclusion in the copolymer chain as elucidated by NMR. DEPT‐135 NMR spectral analysis was used to explicate the nature of arrangement of monomer sequences in the copolymer chain. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献
