Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composite has an extensive application. However, the performances of CF/PA6 composite are constrained by the poor interfacial adhesion between CF and PA6 matrix. In this article, in order to strengthen the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composite, a layer of poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-sulfonyldiphonel) (PZS) hybrid coating with plenty of PZS microspheres (PZSMS) was successfully introduced onto CF surface through facile in situ polymerization. After surface modification, the surface morphologies and the surface chemical structures of fibers changed distinctly. On one hand, the PZSMS provided more contact points and increased mechanical interlocking between CF and PA6 matrix. On the other hand, numerous hydrogen bonds between CF and PA6 were formed due to a great amount of unique polar groups on modified CF surface. Consequently, in comparison with untreated CF, the interfacial shear strength of CF-PZSMS/PA6 composites was improved from 37.68 ± 3.16 to 53.79 ± 3.38 MPa, by 42.75 ± 3.02%. The results indicated that PZS hybrid coating on fiber surface effectively improved the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composites, and the stronger hydrogen bonding and the enhanced mechanical interlocking synergistically played a major role in such significant improvements.  相似文献

The effect of surface treatment [rare earth solution (RES) and air oxidation] of carbon fibers (CFs) on the mechanical and tribological properties of carbon fiber‐reinforced polyimide (CF/PI) composites was comparatively investigated. Experimental results revealed that surface treatment can effectively improve the interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PI matrix. Thus, the flexural strength and wear resistance were significantly improved. The RES surface treatment is superior to air oxidation treatment in promoting interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PI matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2008  相似文献

A carbon fiber (CF)/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composite was manufactured using hybrid fabrics composed of CF and PEEK fiber. The fiber/matrix interface was modified by low temperature oxygen plasma treatment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) were used to relate the roughness and the functionality of the CF surface with the interfacial adhesion strength of the CF/PEEK composite. Scanning electron micrographs showed that plasma treatment increased the roughness of the CF surface up to 3 min of plasma treatment time; and prolonged treatment resulted in overall smoothing. XPS results confirmed that increasing treatment time marginally increased surface functionality: treatment for more than 5 min decreased the surface functionality by removing the active site of the CF surface. In addition, flexural strength and interlaminarshear strength (ILSS) of the CF/PEEK composite were measured. Their maximum values were observed at 3 min of plasma treatment time as a result of surface roughening by plasma etching. The SEM results were correlated with mechanical properties of the CF/PEEK composite.  相似文献

The purpose of the work was to determine the conditions of CF preparation to obtain carbide composites with favorable mechanical response. The relationships between the interfacial properties of fiber/polymethylsiloxane composite, and mechanical properties of the resulting fiber/carbide composites were investigated. The CF/resin interfacial strength was modified by oxidation of CF surface with nitric acid, silanization, and depositing CNT or a pyrolytic carbon layer (PyC). The study of composite interphases (ILSS and SEM) and surface tests of the modified CF (XPS, FT-IR, wettability measurements) showed different nature of the bonding occurring at the fiber/resin and fiber/ceramics boundary. The CF silanization significantly improved the ILSS between CFs and resin by 38.5%, while reduced flexural properties of carbide composites. The most promising treatment method of CF for PIP-based ceramic composites was modification with PyC, which provided 2 times higher ILSS, 1.5 times higher flexural strength and improved work to fracture (WF) as compared to unmodified CF.  相似文献

This paper reports the effect of chemical treatment on the mechanical properties of a natural fiber, isora, as reinforcement in unsaturated polyester resin. Isora fiber is separated from the bark of the Helicteres isora plant by a retting process. The short isora fiber surface was modified chemically by acetylation, benzoylation, silane and triton treatments to bring about improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. The modified surfaces were characterized by IR spectroscopy and SEM. The SEM studies were carried out to investigate the fiber surface morphology, fiber pull-out and fiber-polyester interface bonding. They showed the changes occuring on the fiber surface during chemical treatment. Properties like tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength have been studied. The chemical modification of fiber improved fiber/matrix interaction as evidenced by the enhanced tensile and flexural properties. The lower impact properties of the composites, except triton-treated fiber composite, further point to the improved fiber/matrix adhesion, compared to the untreated fiber composites.  相似文献

We introduce in this article oxygen plasma treatment as a convenient and effective method for the surface modification of Armos fibers. The effects of oxygen‐plasma‐treatment power on both the Armos fiber surface properties and Armos‐fiber‐reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) composite interfacial adhesion were investigated. The Armos fiber surface chemical composition, surface morphology and roughness, and surface wettability as a function of oxygen‐plasma‐treatment power were measured by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic contact angle analysis. The results show that oxygen plasma treatment introduced a lot of reactive functional groups onto the fiber surface, changed the surface morphology, increased the surface roughness, and enhanced the surface wettability. Additionally, the effect of the oxygen‐plasma‐treatment power on the composite interfacial adhesion was measured by interlaminar shear strength with a short‐beam bending test. Oxygen plasma treatment was an effective method for improving the composite interfacial properties by both chemical bonding and physical effects. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ultra-high modulus polyethylene (UHMPE) fiber was treated with oxygen plasma and a silane coupling agent in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between the UHMPE fiber and vinylester resin. The oxygen plasma and γ-methylmethacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS)-treated UHMPE fiber/vinylester composites showed a slightly higher interlaminar shear strength than the oxygen plasma-treated UHMPE fiber/vinylester composites. The interfacial adhesion of the oxygen plasma-treated UHMPE fiber/vinylester composites in this study is mainly due to mechanical interlocking between the micropits formed by the oxygen plasma treatment and the vinylester resin. The γ-MPS molecules adsorbed onto the UHMPE fiber surface neither affected the morphology of the UHMPE fiber surface, nor reduced the extent of mechanical interlocking. The improved interfacial adhesion by the γ-MPS treatment is due to enhanced wettability and chemical interaction through the chemically adsorbed γ-MPS molecules, as detected by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The γ-MPS molecules adsorbed onto the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plate surface also reduced the aging effect of the oxygen plasma-treated UHMWPE surface.  相似文献

The interfacial adhesion of the carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyurethane (PU) composite was improved by the means of anodic oxidation treatment. The mechanical and reciprocating sliding wear properties were studied and results showed that the anodic oxidation treatment have definitely improved the mechanical strength. And the wear and the friction coefficient of PU decreased with the addition of CF. The friction coefficients of anodic oxidation treated CF/PU composites are lower than those of PU and CF/PU composite. The interfacial adhesion between the CF and PU dominated the main wear mechanisms.  相似文献

An aqueous suspension deposition method was used to coat the sized carbon fibers T700SC and T300B with commercially carboxylic acid-functionalized and hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs on the fiber surfaces were expected to improve the interfacial strength between the fibers and the epoxy. The factors affecting the deposition, especially the fiber sizing, were studied. According to single fiber-composite fragmentation tests, the deposition process results in improved fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. Using carboxylic acid-functionalized CNTs, the interfacial shear strength was increased 43% for the T700SC composite and 12% for the T300B composite. The relationship between surface functional groups of the CNTs and the interfacial improvement was discussed. The interfacial reinforcing mechanism was explored by analyzing the surface morphology of the carbon fibers, the wettability between the carbon fibers and the epoxy resin, the chemical bonding between the fiber sizing and the CNTs, and fractographic observation of cross-sections of the composites. Results indicate that interfacial friction, chemical bonding and resin toughening are responsible for the interfacial improvement of nanostructured carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The mechanical properties of the CNT-deposited composite laminate were further measured to confirm the effectiveness of this strategy.

Interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix has a strong influence on composite mechanical performance: better interfacial adhesion can enhance composite transverse properties, flexural properties, and interlaminar shear strength, and so on. To exploit the reinforcement potential of the fibers in advanced composite, it is necessary to reach a deeper understanding on the relation between fiber wettability and interfacial adhesion. In our experiment, we study the influence of fiber wettability on interfacial properties of fiber/PPESK composites by choosing three kinds of fibers with different wettabilities. The relation between fiber wettability and surface free energy was discussed, and the influence of fiber wettability on the interfacial property of fiber/PPESK composites was analyzed. Results indicate that higher surface free energy can enhance the wettability between fiber and matrix, and the humid resistance and interfacial adhesion can be improved at the same time. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of air-oxidation and ozone surface treatment of carbon fibers (CF) on tribological properties of CF reinforced Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites under oil-lubricated condition was investigated. Experimental results revealed that ozone treated CF reinforced PTFE (CF/PTFE) composite had the lowest friction coefficient and wear. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of carbon fiber surface showed that the increase in the amount of oxygen-containing groups enhanced interfacial adhesion between CF and PTFE matrix. With strong interfacial adhesion of the composite, stress could be effectively transmitted to carbon fibers; carbon fibers were strongly bonded with PTFE matrix.  相似文献

For weight savings of automobiles to improve fuel efficiency, tensile and impact strengths of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) are important properties required for substitution of metallic or ceramic automotive parts by CFRC parts. Effect of surface treatments of carbon fiber (CF) such as plasma, nitric acid, and liquid nitrogen treatments on interfacial bonding and mechanical properties of CF reinforced thermoplastic composites was investigated and nitric acid treatment was the best method to improve the interfacial affinity between the used CF and thermoplastic polymer matrix since the treatment induced acidic functional groups on the surface and increased surface roughness simultaneously. A new hybrid fabrication method was suggested by applying a bi-component two-layer structure to the film insert molding to improve tensile and impact strengths of CFRC simultaneously. Compared with tensile and impact strengths of the base polymer, those of the new hybrid composites filled with rubber particles and CF were improved by about 41.3% and 105.7%, respectively. In particular, tensile and impact strengths of the composite specimen prepared by the hybrid fabrication method were improved by about 15.0% and 36.0%, respectively when compared with those of the composite specimen prepared by the conventional melt mixing.  相似文献

Silane surface modification method was used for the surface treatment of carbon fiber to improve the interfacial adhesion of the carbon fiber reinforced bismaleimide(BMI) composite. The surface characteristics of untreated and treated carbon fiber were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscope. The friction and wear properties of the BMI composites filled with differently surface treated carbon fibers(20 vol%), were investigated on a ring-on-block tribometer. Experimental results revealed that silane treatment largely reduced the friction and wear of CF/BMI composites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) of worn surfaces of BMI composites showed that surface treated CF/BMI composite had the strongest interfacial adhesion.  相似文献

A floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (CVD) unit was utilized to grow CNT onto the surface of carbon fiber (CF). The surface morphology of the resultant fibers, CNT population density and alignment pattern were found to be depended on the CNT growth temperature, growth time, and atmospheric conditions within the CVD chamber. In contrast to the neat‐CF reinforced composites, improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between CF and matrix were obtained when the surface of CF was coated by CNT. Particularly, CF treatment condition for CNT‐coating with 700°C reaction temperature and 30 min reaction time has shown a considerable increase in IFSS approximately of 45% over that of the untreated fiber from which it was processed. The proper justification of fiber–matrix adhesion featured by composite interfacial properties was explained through IFSS. POLYM. Type II (high strength) carbon fibres have been given a low power nitrogen plasma treatment. It is shown that this plasma treatment has no effect on the fibre diameter, no detrimental effect on fibre strength and can significantly improve fibre/resin adhesion. It is proposed that this improvement is due to chemical interaction via amine/epoxy bonding at the edge sites together with the interaction of the epoxy with activated basal planes present on the fibre surface. This improvement is only achieved if the fibres are immersed in resin before being exposed to air. Exposing the treated fibres to air drastically reduces fibre/adhesion due to the adsorption of moisture from the environment. Heating these latter fibres in a vacuum at 130°C for one hour allows some recovery of the interfacial strength. It is also demonstrated that the interfacial shear strength falls dramatically when the nitrogen-containing functional groups are completely removed from the fibre surface.  相似文献

In this work, solutions of rare earth modifier (RES) and epoxy chloropropane (ECP) grafting modification method were used for the surface treatment of aramid fiber. The effect of chemical treatment on aramid fiber has been studied in a composite system. The surface characteristics of aramid fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The interfacial properties of aramid/epoxy composites were investigated by means of the single fiber pull‐out tests. The mechanical properties of the aramid/epoxy composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). As a result, it was found that RES surface treatment is superior to ECP grafting treatment in promoting the interfacial adhesion between aramid fiber and epoxy matrix, resulting in the improved mechanical properties of the composites. Meanwhile, the tensile strengths of single fibers were almost not affected by RES treatment. This was probably due to the presence of reactive functional groups on the aramid fiber surface, leading to an increment of interfacial binding force between fibers and matrix in a composite system. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
