In this study, the poly(methyl methacrylate/polystyrene (PMMA/PS) core‐shell composite latex was synthesized by the method of soapless seeded emulsion polymerization. The morphology of the PMMA/PS composite latex was core‐shell structure, with PMMA as the core and PS as the shell. The core‐shell morphology of the composite polymer latex was found to be thermally unstable. Under the effect of thermal annealing, the PS shell region first dispersed into the PMMA core region, and later separated out to the outside of the PMMA core region. This was explained on the basis of lowing interfacial tension between the PMMA and PS phases owing to the interpenetration layer. The interpenetration layer, which was located at the interface of the core and shell region, contained graft copolymer and entangled polymer chains. Both the graft copolymer and entangled polymer chains had the ability to lower the interfacial tension between the PMMA and PS phases. Also, the effect of thermal annealing on the morphology of commercial polymer/composite latex polymer blends was examined. The result showed that the core‐shell composite latex had the ability to enhance the compatibility of the components of polymer blends. The compatibilizing ability of the core‐shell composite latex was better than that of a random copolymer. Moreover, the effect of the amount of core‐shell composite latex on the morphology of the polymer blend was investigated. The polymer blends, which contained composite latex above 50% wt, showed the morphology of a double sea‐island structure. In addition, the composite latex was completely dissolved in solvent to destroy the core‐shell structure and release the entangled polymer chains, and then dried to form the entangled free composite polymer. The entangled free composite polymer had the ability to enhance the compatibility of the components of the polymer blend as usual. The weight ratio 3/7 commercial polymer/entangled free composite polymer blend showed the morphology of the phase inversion structure. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using microwave (MW) irradiation, polyacrylonitrile was grafted onto chitosan with 170% grafting yield under homogeneous conditions in 1.5 min in the absence of any radical initiator or catalyst. Under similar conditions a maximum grafting of 105% could be achieved when the K2S2O8/ascorbic acid redox system was used as radical initiator in a thermostatic water bath at 35 ± 2°C. The representative graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, and X‐ray diffraction measurement, taking chitosan as a reference. The effects of such reaction variables as monomer/chitosan concentration, MW power, and exposure time on the graft co polymerization were studied. A probable mechanism for grafting without the redox system under microwaves was proposed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 820–825, 2005  相似文献

The graft copolymer of N‐vinylformamide with alginic acid was synthesized by free radical polymerization using potassium peroxymonosulphate and thiourea as redox pair in inert atmosphere. The optimum conditions for maximum grafting have been determined by varying the concentrations of N‐vinylformamide, potassium peroxymonosulphate, thiourea, sulfuric acid, alginic acid as well as time duration and temperature. The grafting parameters increase up to the certain concentrations of N‐vinylformamide, potassium peroxymonosulhate, thiourea, and hydrogen ion while thereafter grafting parameters decrease. The effect of alginic acid concentration on grafting parameters has been observed to decrease continuously. It has also been found that grafting parameters increase up to certain time and temperature, respectively, and thereafter decrease. The swelling properties of graft copolymer in terms of swelling ratio and percent swelling are investigated. Flocculation property of pure and grafted sample for both coking and noncoking coals is also investigated for the treatment of coal mine waste water. The graft copolymer has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetic analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile)‐graft‐poly(propylene oxide) (PSAN‐graft‐PPO), the stabilizer formed in situ in the dispersion polymerization of styrene, acrylonitrile and macromonomer PPO maleate in PPO polyol, was separated from ungrafted copolymer PSAN by liquid chromatography. After the determination of the separation conditions by thin‐layer chromatography, the effective separation of the graft polymer from copolymer PSAN was achieved by liquid column chromatography. The graft efficiency and the composition of the graft polymer was determined by UV and 1H NMR, and the formation characteristics of the graft polymer are discussed. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Comb‐type graft hydrogels, composed of chitosan and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), were prepared to manifest rapid temperature and pH sensitivity. Instead of directly grafting the NIPAAm monomer onto the chitosan chain, semitelechelic PNIPAAm with carboxyl end group was synthesized by radical polymerization using 3‐mercaptopropionic acid as the chain‐transfer agent, and was grafted onto chitosan having amino groups. The comb‐type hydrogels were prepared with two different graft yields and grafting regions, such as surface‐ and bulk‐grafting, and then compared with a chitosan hydrogel. The synthesis of telechelic PNIPAAm and the formation of amide group were confirmed by using FTIR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Results from the water state and thermal stability revealed that the introduction of the PNIPAAm side chain disturbed the ordered arrangement of the chitosan molecule, resulting in an increase in the equilibrium water content. Comb‐type graft hydrogels showed rapid temperature and pH sensitivity because of the free‐ended PNIPAAm attached to the chitosan main chain and the chitosan amino group itself, respectively. In particular, the surface graft hydrogel maintained its dimension at low pH, although the chitosan main chain was not crosslinked, whereas chitosan and bulk graft hydrogel were dissolved as a result of the coating effect of pH‐independent PNIPAAm. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled grafting of well‐defined polymer brushes on the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films was carried out by the surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Surface‐initiators were immobilized on the PVDF films by surface hydroxylation and esterification of the hydroxyl groups covalently linked to the surface with 2‐bromoisobutyrate bromide. Homopolymer brushes of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) were prepared by ATRP from the α‐bromoester‐functionalized PVDF surface. The chemical composition of the graft‐functionalized PVDF surfaces was characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR)–FTIR spectroscopy. Kinetics study revealed a linear increase in the graft concentration of PMMA and PEGMA with the reaction time, indicating that the chain growth from the surface was consistent with a “controlled” or “living” process. The “living” chain ends were used as the macroinitiator for the synthesis of diblock copolymer brushes. Water contact angles on PVDF films were reduced by surface grafting of PEGMA and MMA. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 3704–3712, 2006  相似文献

Brush type of poly (3‐hydroxy butyrate), PHB, copolymer synthesis has been reported. Natural PHB was chlorinated by passing chlorine gas through PHB solution in CHCl3/CCl4 mixture (75/25 v/v) to prepare chlorinated PHB, PHB‐Cl, with the chlorine contents varying between 2.18 and 39.8 wt %. Toluene solution of PHB‐Cl was used in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate, MMA, in the presence of cuprous bromide (CuBr)/2,2′‐bipyridine complex as catalyst, at 90°C. This “grafting from” technique led to obtain poly (3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐g‐poly(methylmethacrylate) (PHB‐g‐PMMA) brush type graft copolymers (cylindrical brush). The polymer brushes were fractionated by fractional precipitation methods and the γ values calculated from the ratio of the volume of nonsolvent to volume of solvent of brushes were ranged between 2.8 and 9.5 depending on the molecular weight, grafting density, and side chain length of the brushes, while the γ values of PHB, PHB‐Cl, and homo‐PMMA were 2.7–3.8, 0.3–2.4, and 3.0–3.9, respectively. The fractionated brushes were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. PHB‐g‐PMMA brush type graft copolymers showed narrower molecular weight distribution (mostly in range between 1.3 and 2.2) than the PHB‐Cl macroinitiator (1.6–3.5). PHB contents in the brushes were calculated from their TGA thermograms and found to be in range between 22 and 42 mol %. The morphologies of PHB‐g‐PMMA brushes were also studied by scanning electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

Suspension‐emulsion combined polymerization process, in which methyl methacrylate (MMA) emulsion polymerization constituents (EPC) were drop wise added to styrene (St) suspension polymerization system, was applied to prepare polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) composite particles. The influences of the feeding condition and the composition of EPC on the particle feature of the resulting composite polymer particles were investigated. It was found that PS/PMMA core‐shell composite particles with a narrow particle size distribution and a great size would be formed when the EPC was added at the viscous energy dominated particle formation stage of St suspension polymerization with a suitable feeding rate, whereas St‐MMA copolymer particles or PS/PMMA composite particles with imperfect core‐shell structure would be formed when the EPC was added at the earlier or later stage of St suspension polymerization, respectively. It was also showed that the EPC composition affected the composite particles formation process. The individual latex particles would exist in the final product when the concentrations of MMA monomer, sodium dodecyl sulfate emulsifier, and potassium persulfate initiator were great in the EPC. Considering the feature of St suspension polymerization and the morphology of PS/PMMA composite particles, the formation mechanism of PS/PMMA particles with core‐shell structure was proposed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of methyl methacrylate‐butadiene‐styrene (MBS) graft copolymers were synthesized via seeded emulsion polymerization techniques by grafting styrene and methyl methacrylate on poly(butadiene‐co‐styrene) (SBR) particles. The chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/MBS blends were obtained by melting MBS graft copolymers with CPVC resin, and the effect of the core/shell ratio of MBS graft copolymer and SBR content of CPVC/MBS blends on the mechanical properties and morphology of CPVC/MBS blends was studied. The results showed that, with the increase in the core/shell ratio, the impact strength of the blend increased and then decreased. It was found that, when the core/shell ratio was 50/50, the impact strength was about 155 J/m, and the tensile strength evidently increased. The toughness of the CPVC/MBS blend was closely related to the SBR content of the blend, and with the increasing of SBR content of blend, the impact strength of the blend increased. The morphology of CPVC/MBS blends was observed via scanning electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the toughness of CPVC/MBS blend was consistence with the dispersion of MBS graft copolymers in the CPVC matrix. J. VINYL ADDIT. Surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film was studied. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly (acrylamide) (PAAM), and their diblock copolymer (PMMA/PAAM) on the surface of PET film were successfully prepared by surface‐initiated ATRP. The structures and properties of the modified PET film were characterized by FT‐IR/ATR, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), measurements of contact angles, and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the surface properties of PET film were greatly improved by grafted polymer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Polyacrylamide grafted crosslinked poly (vinyl chloride) beads (PAM‐PVC) were prepared by the surface‐initiated controlled/“living” radical polymerization (SI‐CLRP) methodology from the crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) beads with surface modification with diethyldithiocarbamyl groups under UV irradiation. The macroiniferter, diethyldithiocarbamyl crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) beads (DEDTC‐PVC) were prepared by the reaction of the surface C? Cl groups with sodium N,N‐diethyl dithiocarbamate. The “grafting from” polymerization exhibited some “living” polymerization characteristics and the percentage of grafting (PG%) increased linearly with polymerizing time and achieved 47.6% after 6 h UV irradiation. The beaded polymer with polyacrylamide surface was also characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Its adsorption property for Hg(II) ion was also investigated preliminarily. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102:3385–3390, 2006  相似文献

The graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl chloride‐co‐vinyl acetate) with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully carried out with copper(I) thiocyanate/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine and copper(I) chloride/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalysts in the solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide. For methyl methacrylate, a kinetic plot of ln([M]0/[M]) (where [M]0 is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration) versus time for the graft polymerization was almost linear, and the molecular weight of the graft copolymer increased with increasing conversion, this being typical for ATRP. The formation of the graft polymer was confirmed with gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The glass‐transition temperature of the copolymer increased with the concentration of methyl methacrylate. The graft copolymer was hydrolyzed, and its swelling capacity was measured. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 183–189, 2005  相似文献

PMMA nanoparticles with highly mono‐dispersed size distribution were prepared using the RAFT living radical emulsion polymerization technique. A novel sur‐iniferter for the RAFT reaction, DTBA, was synthesized and its chemical structure was identified using several spectroscopic techniques. The relationship between the particle size and the molecular weight of the polymer was investigated measuring the rate of growth of each during formation of particles, and was well explained by the simple random flight molecular conformation model. The particle size increased up to a certain value with decreasing sur‐iniferter concentration and then leveled off, because the surface charge density of the growing particles was not high enough to stabilize the particles in aqueous medium above that value. The core‐shell type di‐block copolymer nanoparticles were also successfully prepared via RAFT reaction. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

Core shell latex particles with a glassy core and a low Tg polymeric shell are usually preferred. More so, the glassy core happens to be a fluoropolymer with a shell polymer that helps in processability. We describe here the preparation and characterization of core shell nanoparticles consisting of poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene‐co‐ethylvinylether) as core encapsulated in poly(styrene‐acrylate) copolymer shell using seeded emulsion polymerization method under kinetically controlled monomer starved conditions. Properties of the emulsion using surfactants (fluoro/conventional) and surfactant free conditions were investigated. Average size (100 nm), spherical shape and core–shell morphology of the latex particles was confirmed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Absence of C? F and C? Cl peaks in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy proves that cores are completely covered. Polymerization in the presence of fluorocarbon surfactant was found to give optimum features like narrow size distribution, good shell deposition and no traces of agglomeration. Films of core shell latex particles exhibited improved transparency and enhanced water contact angles thus making them suitable for applications in various fields including coatings. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A surface imprinted core‐shell nanorod with water‐compatible property was first prepared, using a two‐step “living” polymerization technique, with magnetic attapulgite (MATP) as core, and it was applicable in the enhanced selective removal of sulfamethazine residue from pure water environments. MATP was synthesized by an impregnation and pyrolysis method, and polymerable group was subsequently attached onto the surface. The imprinted polymer nanoshell (13 nm) with the “living” fragments was formed via a reverse atom transfer radical precipitation polymerization, avoiding the tedious graft of initiator and providing the easy‐accessible imprinted sites. Ultrathin hydrophilic polymer brushes (2.0 nm) were surface‐grafted to improve their water‐compatibility. The nanoadsorbent exhibited good thermal stability, magnetism, and hydrophilicity through characterization. The nanoadsorbent showed large adsorption capacity toward sulfamethazine from water, which increased with the increase of contact temperature. Langmuir isotherm fitted the equilibrium data better, and the kinetic data (within 45 min) were well‐analyzed by the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. Also, the specific adsorption property of the nanoadsorbent was greatly improved through the surface‐grafting, which exhibited excellent selectivity to sulfamethazine compared with other reference antibiotics. Efficient magnetic separation and good reuse of the nanoadsorbent provided the potential possibility for selective recognition and fast removal of antibiotic pollutions from water environments. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers of cassava starch and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were synthesized by free‐radical polymerization with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator in an aqueous medium at 80°C. The formation of graft copolymers was confirmed by analysis of the obtained products with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of the amount of cassava starch, the amount of MMA monomer, the amount of BPO, and the reaction time on the grafting characteristics were studied. The optimum condition for grafting were obtained when 5 g of cassava starch, 5 g of MMA, 0.1 g of BPO, and a reaction time of 3 h were used. These condition provided a graft copolymer with 25.00% add‐on, 81.40% monomer conversion, 54.30% homopoly(methyl methacrylate) formed, 45.70% grafting efficiency, 37.20% grafting ratio, and 95.54% yield. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft reaction of succinic anhydride onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was catalyzed by p‐toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate in solid state. The infrared spectra and 1H‐NMR spectra confirmed that succinic anhydride was successfully grafted onto PVA backbone. The influences of reaction temperature, reaction time, the amount of succinic anhydride, and the amount of catalyst on the graft reaction were studied. Uncrosslinked PVA graft copolymer with grafting degree up to about 6.5% could be obtained under low reaction temperature, short reaction time, and low amount of catalyst, whereas crosslinked PVA with high gel content could be obtained under high reaction temperature, long reaction time, and high amount of catalyst. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The triblock energetic copolymer poly(lactic acid)‐block‐(glycidylazide polymer)‐block‐polystyrene (PLA‐b‐GAP‐b‐PS) was synthesized successfully through atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and ring‐opening polymerization of d,l ‐lactide. The energetic macroinitiator GAP‐Br, which was made from reacting equimolar GAP with α‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, firstly triggered the ATRP of styrene with its bromide group, and then the hydroxyl group on the GAP end of the resulting diblock copolymer participated in the polymerization of lactide in the presence of stannous octoate. The triblock copolymer PLA‐b‐GAP‐b‐PS had a narrow distribution of molecular weight. In the copolymer, the PS block was solvophilic in toluene and improved the stability of the structure, the PLA block was solvophobic in toluene and served as the sacrificial component for the preparation of porous materials, and GAP was the basic and energetic material. The three blocks of the copolymer were fundamentally thermodynamically immiscible, which led to the self‐assembly of the block copolymer in solution. Further studies showed that the concentration and solubility of the copolymer and the polarity of the solvent affected the morphology and size of the micelles generated from the self‐assembly of PLA‐b‐GAP‐b‐PS. The micelles generated in organic solvents at 10 mg mL?1 copolymer concentration were spherical but became irregular when water was used as a co‐solvent. The spherical micelles self‐assembled in toluene had three distinct layers, with the diameter of the micelles increasing from 60 to 250 nm as the concentration of the copolymer increased from 5 to 15 mg L?1. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polythiophene (PT) based dual responsive water‐soluble graft copolymer (PT‐g‐[poly(methoxyethoxy ethyl methacrylate)‐co‐poly(N,N‐diethylamino ethyl methacrylate)]) (PT‐g‐P(MeO2MA‐co‐DEAEMA)) (PTDE) has been synthesized by random copolymerization of methoxyethoxy ethyl methacrylate (MeO2MA) and N,N‐diethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) at 30 °C on the 2,5‐poly(3‐[1‐ethyl‐2‐(2‐ bromoisobutyrate)] thiophene) (PTI) macroinitiator using the Cu based atom transfer radical polymerization technique. The PTDE graft copolymer was characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR techniques and it exhibits thermo‐reversible solubility in water showing a lower critical solution temperature of ca 42 °C in neutral aqueous solution. The PTDE graft copolymer contains a fluorescent PT backbone, and interestingly the system exhibits doubling of fluorescence intensity with rising temperature over the temperature range 41–45 °C at pH 7. The PTDE system therefore acts following the principle of the polymeric AND logic gate and it is also found to be effective in sensing of nitroaromatics, particularly picric acid. The influence of chain hydrophobicity on the logic operation and on the sensing of nitroaromatics is discussed. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

An amphiphilic graft copolymer of polyacrylamide (PAM) with uniform poly(n‐octyl acrylate) (POA) grafts was synthesized by copolymerization of AM with POA macromer in solution using azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The macromer was synthesized by free radical polymerization of octyl acrylate in the presence of different amounts of thioglycolic acid as the chain transfer agent, followed by termination with glycidyl methacrylate. The reactivity ratio and effects of copolymerization conditions on the conversion of macromer or grafting efficiency were studied. The crude products were purified by extraction with toluene and water successively. The purified graft copolymer was characterized by IR, DSC, and TEM. PAM‐g‐POA can bring about microphase separation and exhibits good emulsifying properties and water absorbency. PAM‐g‐POA exhibits a very good compatibilizing effect on the acrylic rubber/poly(vinyl chloride) blends. About 2–3% of the graft copolymer is enough for enhancing the tensile strength of the blends. The tensile strength of the blends is more than twice that without the compatibilizer. DSC and SEM demonstrated the enhancement of compatibility in the presence of the graft copolymer. POLYM.
