Ethanol steam reforming was studied over Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. The effect of support (- and γ-Al2O3), metal loading and a comparison between conventional H2 reduction with an activation method employing a CH4/O2 mixture was investigated. The properties of catalysts were studied by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR). After activity tests, the catalysts were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTA). Ni supported on γ-Al2O3 was more active for H2 production than the catalyst supported on -Al2O3. Metal loading did not affect the catalytic performance. The alternative activation method with CH4/O2 mixture affected differently the activity and stability of the Ni/γ-Al2O3 and the Ni/-Al2O3 catalyst. This activation method increased significantly the stability of Ni/-Al2O3 compared to H2 reduction. SEM and TG/DTA analysis indicate the formation of filamentous carbon during the CH4/O2 activation step, which is associated with the increasing catalyst activity and stability. The effect of temperature on the type of carbon formed was investigated; indicating that filamentous coke increased activity while encapsulating coke promoted deactivation. A discussion about carbon formation and the influence on the activity is presented.

This study focuses on the loading of catalytic materials, e.g., palladium on the surface of supporting materials, with the aim to obtain catalysts with high activity for methane combustion. The catalyst PdO/CeO2-Al2O3 was prepared by impregnation under ultrasonic condition. The effect of different activation methods on the activity of catalysts for methane catalytic combustion was tested. The properties of reaction and adsorption of oxygen species on catalyst surface were characterized by H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and O2-temperature programmed desorption (O2-TPD). Furthermore, the sulfur tolerance and sulfur poisoning mode were investigated. The results indicate that the catalyst PdO/CeO2-Al2O3 activated with rapid activation shows higher activity for methane combustion and better sulfur tolerance. The result of sulfur content analysis shows that there is a large number of sulfur species on the catalyst’s surface after reactivation at high temperature. It proves that the activity of catalysts cannot be fully restored by high-temperature reactivation.

Reforming of methane with carbon dioxide into syngas over Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts modified by potassium, MnO and CeO2 was studied. The catalysts were prepared by impregnation technique and were characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, BET surface area, pore volume, and BJH pore size distribution measurements, and by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The performance of these catalysts was evaluated by conducting the reforming reaction in a fixed bed reactor. The coke content of the catalysts was determined by oxidation conducted in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. Incorporation of potassium and CeO2 (or MnO) onto the catalyst significantly reduced the coke formation without significantly affecting the methane conversion and hydrogen yield. The stability and the lower amount of coking on promoted catalysts were attributed to partial coverage of the surface of nickel by patches of promoters and to their increased CO2 adsorption, forming a surface reactive carbonate species. Addition of CeO2 or MnO reduced the particle size of nickel, thus increasing Ni dispersion. For Ni–K/CeO2–Al2O3 catalysts, the improved stability was further attributed to the oxidative properties of CeO2. Results of the investigation suggest that stable Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for the carbon dioxide reforming of methane can be prepared by addition of both potassium and CeO2 (or MnO) as promoters.

A novel process concept called tri-reforming of methane has been proposed in our laboratory using CO2 in the flue gases from fossil fuel-based power plants without CO2 separation [C. Song, Chemical Innovation 31 (2001) 21–26]. The proposed tri-reforming process is a synergetic combination of CO2 reforming, steam reforming, and partial oxidation of methane in a single reactor for effective production of industrially useful synthesis gas (syngas). Both experimental testing and computational analysis show that tri-reforming can not only produce synthesis gas (CO + H2) with desired H2/CO ratios (1.5–2.0), but also could eliminate carbon formation which is usually a serious problem in the CO2 reforming of methane. These two advantages have been demonstrated by tri-reforming of CH4 in a fixed-bed flow reactor at 850 °C with supported nickel catalysts. Over 95% CH4 conversion and about 80% CO2 conversion can be achieved in tri-reforming over Ni catalysts supported on an oxide substrate. The type and nature of catalysts have a significant impact on CO2 conversion in the presence of H2O and O2 in tri-reforming in the temperature range of 700–850 °C. Among all the catalysts tested for tri-reforming, their ability to enhance the conversion of CO2 follows the order of Ni/MgO > Ni/MgO/CeZrO > Ni/CeO2 ≈ Ni/ZrO2 ≈ Ni/Al2O3 > Ni/CeZrO. The higher CO2 conversion over Ni/MgO and Ni/MgO/CeZrO in tri-reforming may be related to the interaction of CO2 with MgO and more interface between Ni and MgO resulting from the formation of NiO/MgO solid solution. Results of catalytic performance tests over Ni/MgO/CeZrO catalysts at 850 °C and 1 atm with different feed compositions confirm the predicted equilibrium conversions based on the thermodynamic analysis for tri-reforming of methane. Kinetics of tri-reforming were also examined. The reaction orders with respect to partial pressures of CO2 and H2O are different over Ni/MgO, Ni/MgO/CeZrO, and Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for tri-reforming.

Ni/Al2O3 catalyst modified by small amounts of Mo show unusual properties in the steam reforming of hydrocarbons. There are no data about the effect of small amounts of molybdenum on reduction of the Ni-Mo supported catalysts. The properties of these very complex systems depend on the conditions of successive preparation stages (calcination, reduction) or the process conditions.

A series of Ni/Al2O3 catalysts modified by Mo were prepared in order to investigate the influence of promoter amounts and preparation sequence on their properties. Temperature programmed reduction (TPR) has been employed to study the reducibility of Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalysts. Catalysts were further characterized by BET area, H2 chemisorption and X-ray diffraction measurements.

The TPR curves of Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalysts are very complex. Mo addition leads to the decrease of catalysts reducibility. However, complete reduction of NiO and MoO3 can be achieved at 800 °C. The reduction course depends on the sequence of nickel and molybdenum addition into the support. Precise measurements of Ni peaks positions in the XRD pattern of Ni/Al2O3 and Ni-Mo/Al2O3 samples show the possibility of Ni-Mo solid solution formation.

The effectiveness of Ag/Al2O3 catalyst depends greatly on the alumina source used for preparation. A series of alumina-supported catalysts derived from AlOOH, Al2O3, and Al(OH)3 was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, O2, NO + O2-temperature programmed desorption (TPD), H2-temperature programmed reduction (TPR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and activity test, with a focus on the correlation between their redox properties and catalytic behavior towards C3H6-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO reaction. The best SCR activity along with a moderated C3H6 conversion was achieved over Ag/Al2O3 (I) employing AlOOH source. The high density of Ag–O–Al species in Ag/Al2O3 (I) is deemed to be crucial for NO selective reduction into N2. By contrast, a high C3H6 conversion simultaneously with a moderate N2 yield was observed over Ag/Al2O3 (II) prepared from a γ-Al2O3 source. The larger particles of AgmO (m > 2) crystallites were believed to facilitate the propene oxidation therefore leading to a scarcity of reductant for SCR of NO. An amorphous Ag/Al2O3 (III) was obtained via employing a Al(OH)3 source and 500 °C calcination exhibiting a poor SCR performance similar to that for Ag-free Al2O3 (I). A subsequent calcination of Ag/Al2O3 (III) at 800 °C led to the generation of Ag/Al2O3 (IV) catalyst yielding a significant enhancement in both N2 yield and C3H6 conversion, which was attributed to the appearance of γ-phase structure and an increase in surface area. Further thermo treatment at 950 °C for the preparation of Ag/Al2O3 (V) accelerated the sintering of Ag clusters resulting in a severe unselective combustion, which competes with SCR of NO reaction. In view of the transient studies, the redox properties of the prepared catalysts were investigated showing an oxidation capability of Ag/Al2O3 (II and V) > Ag/Al2O3 (IV) > Ag/Al2O3 (I) > Ag/Al2O3 (III) and Al2O3 (I). The formation of nitrate species is an important step for the deNOx process, which can be promoted by increasing O2 feed concentration as evidenced by NO + O2-TPD study for Ag/Al2O3 (I), achieving a better catalytic performance.

The glow discharge plasma treated Ni/Al2O3 catalyst showed an excellent anti-coke property for CO2 reforming of methane. Characterizations using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and CO adsorbed infrared spectroscopy (IR) were conducted to investigate the structure and reactivity of the plasma treated Ni/Al2O3 catalyst for CO2 reforming of methane. It confirms that the plasma treatment of Ni precursor at room temperature followed by calcination thermally has a significant influence on the surface characteristics of the active phase. The plasma treated catalyst contains high concentration of close packed plane with improved Ni dispersion and enhanced Ni-alumina interaction, which lead to high catalytic activity and excellent resistance to formations of filamentous carbon and encapsulating carbon.

Nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst consisting of comparably sized Ni metal and ZrO2 nanoparticles is studied in comparison with zirconia- and alumina-supported Ni catalysts (Ni/ZrO2-CP and commercial Ni/Al2O3-C) for steam reforming of methane (SRM) and for combined steam and CO2 reforming of methane (CSCRM). The reactions are performed under atmospheric pressure with stoichiometric amounts of H2O and CH4 or (H2O + CO2) and CH4 at 1073 K. Under a wide range of methane space velocity (gas hourly space velocity of methane GHSVCH4 = 12,000–96,000 ml/(h gcat.), the nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst always shows higher activity and stability for both SRM and CSCRM reactions. The two supported Ni catalysts (Ni/ZrO2-CP and Ni/Al2O3-C) exhibit fairly stable catalysis under low GHSVCH4 but they are easily deactivated under high GHSVCH4 and become completely inactive when they are reacted for ca.100 h at GHSVCH4 = 48,000 ml/(h gcat.). The CSCRM reaction is carried out with different H2O/CO2 ratios in the reaction feed while keeping the molar ratio (H2O + CO2)/CH4 = 1.0, the results prove that the nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst can be highly promising in enabling a catalytic technology for the production of syngas with flexible H2/CO ratios (ca. H2/CO = 1.0–3.0) to meet the requirements of various downstream chemical syntheses.

Surface-phase ZrO2 on SiO2 (SZrOs) and surface-phase La2O3 on Al2O3 (SLaOs) were prepared with various loadings of ZrO2 and La2O3, characterized and used as supports for preparing Pt/SZrOs and Pt/SLaOs catalysts. CH4/CO2 reforming over the Pt/SZrOs and Pt/SLaOs catalysts was examined and compared with Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts. CO2 or CH4 pulse reaction/adsorption analysis was employed to elucidate the effects of these surface-phase oxides.

The zirconia can be homogeneously dispersed on SiO2 to form a stable surface-phase oxide. The lanthana cannot be spread well on Al2O3, but it forms a stable amorphous oxide with Al2O3. The Pt/SZrOs and Pt/SLaOs catalysts showed higher steady activity than did Pt/SiO2 and Pt/Al2O3 by a factor of three to four. The Pt/SZrOs and Pt/SLaOs catalysts were also much more stable than the Pt/SiO2 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts for long stream time and for reforming temperatures above 700 °C. These findings were attributed to the activation of CO2 adsorbed on the basic sites of SZrOs and SLaOs.

The catalytic activity of Pt on alumina catalysts, with and without MnOx incorporated to the catalyst formulation, for CO oxidation in H2-free as well as in H2-rich stream (PROX) has been studied in the temperature range of 25–250 °C. The effect of catalyst preparation (by successive impregnation or by co-impregnation of Mn and Pt) and Mn content in the catalyst performance has been studied. A low Mn content (2 wt.%) has been found not to improve the catalyst activity compared to the base catalyst. However, catalysts prepared by successive impregnation with 8 and 15 wt.% Mn have shown a lower operation temperature for maximum CO conversion than the base catalyst with an enhanced catalyst activity at low temperatures with respect to Pt/Al2O3. A maximum CO conversion of 89.8%, with selectivity of 44.9% and CO yield of 40.3% could be reached over a catalyst with 15 wt.% Mn operating at 139 °C and λ = 2. The effect of the presence of 5 vol.% CO2 and 5 vol.% H2O in the feedstream on catalysts performance has also been studied and discussed. The presence of CO2 in the feedstream enhances the catalytic performance of all the studied catalysts at high temperature, whereas the presence of steam inhibits catalysts with higher MnOx content.

In this study, a novel bifunctional catalyst IrFe/Al2O3, which is very active and selective for preferential oxidation of CO under H2-rich atmosphere, has been developed. When the molar ratio of Fe/Ir was 5/1, the IrFe/Al2O3 catalyst performed best, with CO conversion of 68% and oxygen selectivity towards CO2 formation of 86.8% attained at 100 °C. It has also been found that the impregnation sequence of Ir and Fe species on the Al2O3 support had a remarkable effect on the catalytic performance; the activity decreased following the order of IrFe/Al2O3 > co-IrFe/Al2O3 > FeIr/Al2O3. The three catalysts were characterized by XRD, H2-TPR, FT-IR and microcalorimetry. The results demonstrated that when Ir was supported on the pre-formed Fe/Al2O3, the resulting structure (IrFe/Al2O3) allowed more metallic Ir sites exposed on the surface and accessible for CO adsorption, while did not interfere with the O2 activation on the FeOx species. Thus, a bifunctional catalytic mechanism has been proposed where CO adsorbed on Ir sites and O2 adsorbed on FeOx sites; the reaction may take place at the interface of Ir and FeOx or via a spill-over process.

Ni catalysts supported on γ-Al2O3, CeO2 and CeO2–Al2O3 systems were tested for catalytic CO2 reforming of methane into synthesis gas. Ni/CeO2–Al2O3 catalysts showed much better catalytic performance than either CeO2- or γ-Al2O3-supported Ni catalysts. CeO2 as a support for Ni catalysts produced a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI), which reduced the catalytic activity and carbon deposition. However, CeO2 had positive effect on catalytic activity, stability, and carbon suppression when used as a promoter in Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for this reaction. A weight loading of 1–5 wt% CeO2 was found to be the optimum. Ni catalysts with CeO2 promoters reduced the chemical interaction between nickel and support, resulting in an increase in reducibility and stronger dispersion of nickel. The stability and less coking on CeO2-promoted catalysts are attributed to the oxidative properties of CeO2.

Pd/Al_2O_3催化剂有利于C—H键活化,Pt/Al_2O_3催化剂有利于C—C键活化。Pt/Al_2O_3催化剂对C1-C3烷烃氧化活性的差别明显大于Pd/Al_2O_3催化剂。

Fluidized bed and slurry reactors were employed to increase the CO2 conversion and desirable product selectivity in the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to hydrocarbons over K-promoted iron catalysts, as it is beneficial for the removal of heat generated due to highly exothermic nature of the reaction. The iron catalysts (Fe-K/Al2O3 and Fe-Cu-Al-K) were characterized by BET surface area, CO2 and H2 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature-programmed hydrogenation (TPH). The results of TPR and TPH study clearly indicated that co-precipitated Fe-Cu-Al-K catalyst has much higher reducibility and catalytic activity of CO2 hydrogenation at low temperature than Fe-K/Al2O3. The performance of fluidized bed or slurry reactors was superior to that of fixed bed reactor for the CO2 hydrogenation over Fe-Cu-Al-K catalyst in terms of CO2 conversion and hydrocarbon productivity. Moreover, light olefins and heavy hydrocarbons were selectively synthesized in fluidized bed and slurry reactors, respectively. The optimum operation conditions and the effects of operating variables on the CO2 conversion and its product distribution in these catalytic reactors were also discussed.

Factors controlling the product ratio of CO2/(CO+CO2) and methods for inhibiting deactivation of catalyst for steam reforming of gasoline were studied. Syngas (H2+CO) as major product was produced on Ni-Mo/Al2O3 and the major product on Ni-Re/Al2O3 was H2 and CO2 at the same reaction conditions. Hydrogen with a high CO2/(CO+CO2) ratio of about 92% was produced by coupling reaction of steam reforming and water gas shift on Ni-Re/Al2O3 catalyst at 805 K. The multifunctional activity of the bimetallic catalyst of Ni-Re/Al2O3 and the suitable reaction temperature were of crucial significance for the coupling reaction. Although no deactivation could be observed on both Ni-Mo/Al2O3 and Ni-Re/Al2O3 catalysts for steam reforming of sulfur-free fuels in about 200 h of time on stream, the activity and sulfur-tolerance of Ni-Re/Al2O3 was much better than the values of Ni-Mo/Al2O3 for steam reforming of sulfur-containing fuels because of the unique role of rhenium in the Ni-Re catalyst. The unique role of rhenium in Ni-Re catalyst was mainly because of alloying of rhenium with nickel to form bimetallic Ni-Re sites and interaction of rhenium with sulfur to form S-Re binds. The sulfur-tolerance of Ni-Re/Al2O3 for steam reforming of sulfur-containing gasoline was improved further by addition of a small amount of ZSM-5. The activity and sulfur-tolerance of Ni-Mo/Al2O3 was also enhanced by the addition of ZSM-5.

A series of nano-sized Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/La–Al2O3 catalysts that possess high activities for NH3 decomposition have been successfully synthesized by a coprecipitation method. The catalytic performance was investigated under the atmospheric conditions and a significant enhancement in the activity after the introduction of La was observed. Aiming to study the influence of La promoter on the physicochemical properties, we characterized the catalysts by N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, H2-TPR, chemisorption and TEM techniques. Physisorption results suggested a high specific surface area and XRD spectra showed that nickel particles are in a highly dispersed state. A combination of XRD, TEM and chemisorption showed that Ni0 particles with the average size lower than 5.0 nm are always obtained even though the Ni loading ranged widely from 4 to 63%. Compared with the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts, the Ni/La–Al2O3 ones with an appropriate amount of promoter enjoy a more open mesoporous structure and higher dispersion of Ni. Reduction kinetic studies of prepared catalysts were investigated by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) method and the fact that La additive partially destroyed the metastable Ni–Al mixed oxide phase was detailed.

A multi-component NOx-trap catalyst consisting of Pt and K supported on γ-Al2O3 was studied at 250 °C to determine the roles of the individual catalyst components, to identify the adsorbing species during the lean capture cycle, and to assess the effects of H2O and CO2 on NOx storage. The Al2O3 support was shown to have NOx trapping capability with and without Pt present (at 250 °C Pt/Al2O3 adsorbs 2.3 μmols NOx/m2). NOx is primarily trapped on Al2O3 in the form of nitrates with monodentate, chelating and bridged forms apparent in Diffuse Reflectance mid-Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis. The addition of K to the catalyst increases the adsorption capacity to 6.2 μmols NOx/m2, and the primary storage form on K is a free nitrate ion. Quantitative DRIFTS analysis shows that 12% of the nitrates on a Pt/K/Al2O3 catalyst are coordinated on the Al2O3 support at saturation.

When 5% CO2 was included in a feed stream with 300 ppm NO and 12% O2, the amount of K-based nitrate storage decreased by 45% after 1 h on stream due to the competition of adsorbed free nitrates with carboxylates for adsorption sites. When 5% H2O was included in a feed stream with 300 ppm NO and 12% O2, the amount of K-based nitrate storage decreased by only 16% after 1 h, but the Al2O3-based nitrates decreased by 92%. Interestingly, with both 5% CO2 and 5% H2O in the feed, the total storage only decreased by 11%, as the hydroxyl groups generated on Al2O3 destabilized the K–CO2 bond; specifically, H2O mitigates the NOx storage capacity losses associated with carboxylate competition.
