CW laser pumped emerald laser

A CW laser pumped emerald laser is reported, A 34 percent output power slope efficiency is observed with longitudinal pumping by a krypton laser in a nearly concentric cavity. The laser has been tuned from 728.8 to 809.0 nm, Losses in emerald are larger than those of alexandrite determined in a similar cavity. Our data also indicate that the excited state absorption minimum is shifted from that of alexandrite.     

Efficient modulation and coupling of CW junction laser light using electrooptic waveguides

The use of an electrooptical-waveguide modulator to achieve over 80-percent modulation of 7980-Å light from a room temperature laser diode operating at 10 mW CW is reported. The insertion loss of the modulator including couplers is 8.5 dB, and the output beam has high coherence.     

A new design concept for hollow-cathode white light laser

A white light laser has been constructed which employs a concentric cylinder type laser tube and embodies the novel concept of separating the functions of confining the negative glow providing for diffusion of Cd vapor. The main source preventing the white light oscillation in previous designs is not a lack of Cd vapor in lasing zone but a decrease of the hollow-cathode effect due to many holes of large diameter.     

Tunable CW alexandrite laser

Wavelength-tunable CW laser action has been obtained from solid-state alexandrite, BeAl2O4:Cr³⁺. Laser emission occurred between 744 and 788 nm with a maximum of 6.5 W observed at the 765 nm wavelength with 3 kW of mercury arc excitation.     

Phase modulation to amplitude modulation conversion of CW laser light in optical fibres

We have measured the induced amplitude modulation of sinusoidally phase-modulated CW 1.5 ?m laser light propagating in a single-mode fibre. Amplitude modulation approaching 100% was observed for light phase-modulated at 4 GHz and transmitted through 50 km of fibre. PM-AM conversion produces a power penalty in coherent transmission systems.     

High-efficiency tunable CW dye laser

An output power of 1 W is reported from a tunable CW dye laser pumped by 3.5 W of argon laser radiation. The nearly 30 percent conversion efficiency is achieved by using a very low-loss folded 3-mirror cavity and by pumping through a Brewster-angle dispersing prism.     

Room temperature CW operation of orange light (625 nm) emitting InGaAlP laser

An InGaAlP laser operating under continuous wave excitation, having a record short wavelength of 625 nm at room temperature has been constructed. This was accomplished employing a tensile strained ( Delta a/a=-1%) multiquantum well active region and a six pair multiquantum barrier structure.<>     

A CW external-cavity surface-emitting laser

Room temperature, continuous wave (CW) operation of an external-cavity, optically-pumped surface-emitting laser is reported. The device is a resonant-periodic gain (RPG) vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with the top mirror stack replaced by an epitaxially grown antireflection (AR) coating. An external mirror having a 50-mm radius of curvature completes the resonator in a near hemispherical configuration. Mode spectra, input-output curves, and polarization properties of the device are presented.     

33-W CW dye laser

A continuous rhodamine 6G jet stream dye laser was pumped by a high-power multimode argon laser. Using water with a viscosity-raising additive as a solvent, no thermooptical problems arose up to the available pump power of 110 W. The maximum output power of the CW dye laser was 33 W at an efficiency of 30 percent.     

Gain in CW laser pumped FIR laser gases

This study is an investigation of the FIR radiation amplification in CW laser excited gases so essential for a complete quantitative understanding of the FIR laser cycle. The small-signal FIR gain coefficients have been measured as functions of the relevant parameters for two transitions in CH3OH and three in CH2F2. The measurements, demonstrating the influence of coherent pumping have been compared to quantum-mechanical calculations of a three-level system, interacting resonantly with two coherent fields. The good agreement found between theory and measurements indicates the correctness of the theory in predicting the gain properties of the CW FIR lasers. Also FIR gain saturations have been measured directly and exhibit the expected features.     

Efficient backward and forward pumping CW Raman amplification for InGaAsP laser light in silica fibres

By pumping a small-core single-mode silica fibre with a 1.32 ?m CW Nd:YAG laser, continuous-wave Raman amplification of InGaAsP laser diode light, with unsaturated gain as high as 21 dB, has been obtained in both backward as well as forward pumping configurations.

Dispersion-induced instability in CW laser oscillators

A CW-pumped laser with a short photon cavity lifetime may show an unstable output in the form of spontaneous pulsations or noise. In this paper, a model is developed which reconciles previous studies of unstable behavior in homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened lasers. Specific regions of instability are predicted for xenon lasers, and it is concluded that some degree of inhomogeneous broadening makes the instability much more likely to be observed.     

Gain saturation of CW laser pumped FIR laser gases

The saturation behavior of the 70 μm and the 119 μm transitions in CH3OH has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. This knowledge is essential for constructing a complete model of the CW laser pumped FIR laser. Saturated gain measurements made in a single pass amplifier cell were found to be in good agreement with the theory of a quantum-mechanical three-level system in resonant interaction with two coherent fields. The calculation of the gain using the density matrix formalism yields a pump intensity dependent saturation, a result which is not predicted by the rate equation models.     

CW ruby laser pumped by an argon ion laser

A simple CW ruby laser pumped by a 514.5-nm argon ion laser, utilizing an uncoated ruby rod (no external mirrors), is described. The output does not exhibit spiking, but does show a low amplitude ∼1 percent) of modulation.

CW laser action in atomic fluorine

We have obtained CW laser action on four transitions in the doublet system of atomic fluorine for the first time. All previously reported laser action was on a pulsed basis only. CW laser radiation was obtained when F2or AgF was used as a fluorine donor in an electron beam pumped helium plasma. A multiline output power of 200 mW was obtained.
