Hydrogen and syngas production from sewage sludge via steam gasification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
High temperature steam gasification is an attractive alternative technology which can allow one to obtain high percentage of hydrogen in the syngas from low-grade fuels. Gasification is considered a clean technology for energy conversion without environmental impact using biomass and solid wastes as feedstock. Sewage sludge is considered a renewable fuel because it is sustainable and has good potential for energy recovery. In this investigation, sewage sludge samples were gasified at various temperatures to determine the evolutionary behavior of syngas characteristics and other properties of the syngas produced. The syngas characteristics were evaluated in terms of syngas yield, hydrogen production, syngas chemical analysis, and efficiency of energy conversion. In addition to gasification experiments, pyrolysis experiments were conducted for evaluating the performance of gasification over pyrolysis. The increase in reactor temperature resulted in increased generation of hydrogen. Hydrogen yield at 1000 °C was found to be 0.076 ggas gsample−1. Steam as the gasifying agent increased the hydrogen yield three times as compared to air gasification. Sewage sludge gasification results were compared with other samples, such as, paper, food wastes and plastics. The time duration for sewage sludge gasification was longer as compared to other samples. On the other hand sewage sludge yielded more hydrogen than that from paper and food wastes.  相似文献

Gasification of polyethylene (PE) and woodchips (WC) mixtures have been investigated in a semi-batch reactor, using high temperature steam as the gasifying agent. The reactor temperature was maintained at 900 °C. The ratio of PE–WC was varied from 0% to 100% in 20% intervals. Characteristics of syngas were evaluated based on the yield of syngas, hydrogen, energy, ethylene, total hydrocarbons and apparent thermal efficiency of the process. Results show that properties of syngas evolved during gasification of PE–WC blends cannot be determined from the weighted average syngas properties obtained from separate gasification of WC and PE. Superior results in terms of syngas yield, hydrogen yield, total hydrocarbons yield, energy yield and apparent thermal efficiency from PE–WC blends were obtained as compared to expected weighed average yields from gasification of individual components. Results confirm synergistic interaction between PE and WC during high temperature steam gasification of these mixtures. These results also provide the importance of mixing two or more compounds on the performance of stream gasification of wastes.  相似文献

Wastes produced during oil palm production from agro-industries have great potential as a source of renewable energy in agriculturally rich countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia. Clean chemical energy recovery from oil palm residual branches via steam gasification is investigated here. A semi-batch reactor was used to investigate the gasification of palm trunk wastes at different reactor temperatures in the range of 600 to 1000 °C. The steam flow rate was fixed at 3.10 g/min. Characteristics and overall yield of syngas properties are presented and discussed. Results show that gasification temperature slightly affects the overall syngas yield. However, the chemical composition of the syngas varied tremendously with the reactor temperature. Consequently, the syngas heating value and ratio of energy yield to energy consumed were found to be strongly dependent on the reactor temperature. Both the heating value and energy yield ratio increased with increase in reactor temperature. Gasification duration and the steam to solid fuel ratio indicate that reaction rate becomes progressively slower at reactor temperatures of less than 700 °C. The results reveal that steam gasification of oil palm residues should not be carried out at reactor temperatures lower than 700 °C, since a large amount of steam is consumed per unit mass of the sample in order to gasify the residual char.  相似文献

Main characteristics of gaseous yield from steam gasification have been investigated experimentally. Results of steam gasification have been compared to that of pyrolysis. The temperature range investigated were 600–1000 °C in steps of 100 °C. Results have been obtained under pyrolysis conditions at same temperatures. For steam gasification runs, steam flow rate was kept constant at 8.0 g/min. Investigated characteristics were evolution of syngas flow rate with time, hydrogen flow rate and chemical composition of syngas, energy yield and apparent thermal efficiency. Residuals from both processes were quantified and compared as well. Material destruction, hydrogen yield and energy yield is better with gasification as compared to pyrolysis. This advantage of the gasification process is attributed mainly to char gasification process. Char gasification is found to be more sensitive to the reactor temperature than pyrolysis. Pyrolysis can start at low temperatures of 400 °C; however char gasification starts at 700 °C. A partial overlap between gasification and pyrolysis exists and is presented here. This partial overlap increases with increase in temperature. As an example, at reactor temperature 800 °C this overlap represents around 27% of the char gasification process and almost 95% at reactor temperature 1000 °C.  相似文献

In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model as a machine learning method has been employed to investigate the exergy value of syngas, where the hydrogen content in syngas reached maximum in bubbling fluidized bed gasifier which is developed in Aspen Plus® and validated from experimental data in literature. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm has been used to train ANN model, where oxygen, hydrogen and carbon contents of sixteen different biomass, gasification temperature, steam and fuel flow rates were selected as input parameters of the model. Moreover, four different biomass samples, which hadn't been used in training and testing, have been used to create second validation. The hydrogen mole fraction of syngas was also evaluated at the different steam to fuel ratio and gasification temperature and the exergy value of syngas at the point where the hydrogen content in syngas reached maximum were estimated with low relative error value.  相似文献

The characteristics of syngas evolution during pyrolysis and gasification of waste rubber have been investigated. A semi-batch reactor was used for the thermal decomposition of the material under various conditions of pyrolysis and high temperature steam gasification. The results are reported at two different reactor temperatures of 800 and 900 °C and at constant steam gasifying agent flow rate of 7.0 g/min and a fixed sample mass. The characteristics of syngas were evaluated in terms of syngas flow rate, hydrogen flow rate, syngas yield, hydrogen yield and energy yield. Gasification resulted in 500% increase in hydrogen yield as compared to pyrolysis at 800 °C. However, at 900 °C the increase in hydrogen was more than 700% as compared to pyrolysis. For pyrolysis conditions, increase in reactor temperature from 800 to 900 °C resulted in 64% increase in hydrogen yield while for gasification conditions a 124% increase in hydrogen yield was obtained. Results of syngas yield, hydrogen yield and energy yield from the rubber sample are evaluated with that obtained from woody biomass samples, namely hard wood and wood chips. Rubber gasification yielded more energy at the 900 °C as compared to biomass feedstock samples. However, less syngas and less hydrogen were obtained from rubber than the biomass samples at both the temperatures reported here.  相似文献

A steam gasification processes is an energy conversion pathway through which organic materials are converted to useful energy. In spite of the high energy content in organic waste materials, they have been mostly disposed of in landfills, which causes harmful environmental issues such as methane emissions and ground water pollution and contaminations. In this sense, organic solid waste materials are regarded as alternative resources for conversion to useful energy in the steam gasification process. In this study, three types of waste materials – municipal solid waste (MSW), used tires and sewage sludge – were used to generate syngas through the gasification process in a 1000 °C steam atmosphere. The syngas generation rates and its chemical compositions were measured and evaluated over time to determine the characteristics and dynamics of the gasification process. Also, carbon conversion, and mass and energy balances are presented which demonstrates the feasibility of steam gasification as a waste conversion pathway. The results show that the syngas contains high concentrations of H2, around 41–55% by volume. The syngas generation rate was found to depend on the carbon content in the feedstock regardless of the types of input materials. Comparing to the hydrogen production from water splitting that requires extremely high temperatures at around 1500 °C, hydrogen production by steam gasification of organic materials can be regarded as equally effective but requires lower system temperatures. This research investigated the mineral aluminum silicate catalyst effect on the enhancement of energy yield efficiency and reduction of the tar yield concentration in the gasification of paper-reject sludge. Experimental results indicated that the energy yield efficiency is enhanced by the tested mineral catalyst. When gasification temperature operated at 600 °C, the lower heating value (LHV) of syngas increased significantly from 8.66 MJ/Nm3 to 13.38 MJ/Nm3 with an increase in aluminum silicate catalyst addition from 0% to 20%. The energy density of syngas also increased from 0.53 to 0.82. This implied that the energy utilization of syngas produced by a low temperature catalytic gasification could increase approximately 1.5 times the energy content of paper-reject sludge. The tar reduction efficiency could reach approximately 50% which was also proportional to the catalyst addition ratio. In summary, the aluminum silicate catalyst can help to improve the efficiency of tar reduction and energy yield in a low temperature catalytic gasification of paper-reject sludge.  相似文献

This paper presents the results from an experimental study on the energy conversion efficiency of producing hydrogen enriched syngas through uncatalyzed steam biomass gasification. Wood pellets were gasified using a 100 kWth fluidized bed gasifier at temperatures up to 850 °C. The syngas hydrogen concentration and cold gas efficiency were found to increase with both bed temperature and steam to biomass weight ratio, reaching a maximum of 51% and 124% respectively. The overall energy conversion to syngas (based on heating value) also increased with bed temperature but was inversely proportional to the steam to biomass ratio. The maximum energy conversion to syngas was found to be 68%. The conversion of energy to hydrogen (by heating value) increased with gasifier temperature and gas residence time, but was found to be independent of the S/B ratio. The maximum conversion of all energy sources to hydrogen was found to be 25%.  相似文献

Large amount of food waste is generated from Indian kitchens and disposing off such a large amount possesses a great challenge in terms of environmental degradation and viable food waste processing technology. In this work, steam gasification was tested as an alternative viable technology to process the kitchen food waste. Preliminary study was carried out at low temperature on steam gasification in a fixed bed reactor to study the influence of steam flow rate (SFR) and temperature on the syngas yield, syngas composition, hydrogen yield. Performance parameters such as carbon conversion efficiency (CCE), and apparent thermal efficiency (ATE) are also calculated. Steam flow rates are varied from 0.125 mL/min to 0.75 mL/min and the temperatures are varied from 700 °C to 800 °C. The highest hydrogen yield is obtained at 0.5 mL/min SFR and 800 °C temperature and its highest value is 1.2 m3/kg. The highest value of performance parameters, CCE and ATE are found to be 63% and 1.8.  相似文献

Compared with the conventional thermal drying process, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) can reduce the energy cost of water removal from sewage sludge prior to its steam gasification. However, less attention is paid on the interactions between HTC and gasification. In this study, the thermodynamic evaluation on hydrochar gasification performance under different operating conditions including HTC duration (τ), HTC temperature (THTC), gasification temperature (Tg), and steam/hydrochar mass ratio (S/C ratio) is performed. Two indicators including carbon conversion rate (CC) and cold gas efficiency (CGE) are used to assess the gasification performance. The results show that elevating both gasification temperature and S/C ratio can enhance the H2 production, which also result in the increase of CC and CGE. The content and gasification activity of fixed carbon increase under moderate HTC duration and temperature, favoring the H2 formation despite of the apparent loss of volatiles species in the hydrochar. Longer HTC duration or higher HTC temperature declines the H2 production due to the sharp reduction of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, weakening water gas reaction and on-site reforming reaction of tar occurred on the hydrochar surface. In terms of the values of CC = 93.9% and CGE = 64.38%, the optimum HTC conditions of τ = 30min and THTC = 200 °C can be determined. The data provided here favor guiding HTC treatment of sewage sludge targeting gasification and thus promoting the development of this promising waste-to-energy technology.  相似文献

Glycerol which is a byproduct of biodiesel production is considered as a potential feedstock for syngas production with the increase of biodiesel demand. In this study, the characteristics of glycerol gasification under a microwave plasma torch with varying oxygen and steam supply conditions were investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the gasification efficiency and syngas heating value increased with the supplied microwave power while the increase of oxygen and steam led to a lower gasification performance. In order to achieve high carbon conversion and cold gas efficiency in the microwave plasma gasification of glycerol, the O2/fuel ratio should be maintained at 0–0.4. It was revealed that the fuel droplet size and the mixing effect and retention time inside the plasma flames are critical factors that influence the product gas yield and gasification efficiency. This study verified that syngas with a high content of H2 and CO could be effectively produced from glycerol through microwave plasma gasification.  相似文献

Evolutionary behavior of syngas characteristics evolved during the gasification of cardboard has been examined using a batch reactor with steam as a gasifying agent. Evolutionary behavior of syngas chemical composition, mole fractions of hydrogen, CO and CH4, as well as H2/CO ratio, LHV (kJ/m3), hydrogen flow rate, and percentage of combustible fuel in the syngas evolved has been examined at different steam to flow rates with fixed mass of waste cardboard. The effect of steam to carbon ratio as affect by the steam flow rate on overall syngas properties has therefore been examined. A new parameter called coefficient of energy gain (CEG) has been introduced that provides information on the energy gained from the process. This new parameter elaborates the importance of optimizing the sample residence time in the reactor.  相似文献

Biomass gasification is a prevailing approach for mitigating irreversible fossil fuel depletion. In this study, palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) was steam-gasified in a fixed-bed, batch-fed gasifier, and the effect of four control factors—namely torrefaction temperature for EFB pretreatment, gasification temperature, carrier-gas flow rate, and steam flow rate—on syngas production were investigated. The results showed that steam flow rate is the least influential control factor, with no effect on syngas composition or yield. The gasification temperature of biomass significantly affects the composition of syngas generated during steam gasification, and the H2/CO ratio increases by approximately 50% with an increase in temperature ranging from 680 °C to 780 °C. The higher H2/CO ratio at a lower gasification temperature increased the energy density of the combustible constituents of the syngas by 3.43%.  相似文献

In this paper, an integrated process of steam biomass gasification and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is investigated energetically to evaluate both electrical and energy efficiencies. This system is conceptualized as a combined system, based on steam biomass gasification and with a high temperature, pressurized SOFC. The SOFC system uses hydrogen obtained from steam sawdust gasification. Due to the utilization of the hydrogen content of steam in the reforming and shift reaction stages, the system efficiencies reach appreciable levels. This study essentially investigates the utilization of steam biomass gasification derived hydrogen that was produced from an earlier work in a system combines gasifier and SOFC to perform multi-duties (power and heat). A thermodynamic model is developed to explore a combination of steam biomass gasification, which produces 70–75 g of hydrogen/kg of biomass to fuel a planar SOFC, and generate both heat and power. Furthermore, processes are emerged in the system to increase the hydrogen yield by further processing the rest of gasification products: carbon monoxide, methane, char and tar. The conceptualized scheme combines SOFC operates at 1000 K and 1.2 bar and gasifier scheme based on steam biomass gasification which operates close to the atmospheric pressure, a temperature range of 1023–1423 K and a steam-biomass ratio of 0.8 kmol/kmol. A parametric study is also performed to evaluate the effect of various parameters such as hydrogen yield, air flow rate etc. on the system performance. The results show that SOFC with an efficiency of 50.3% operates in a good fit with the steam biomass gasification module with an efficiency, based on hydrogen yield, of 55.3%, and the overall system then works efficiently with an electric efficiency of ∼82%.  相似文献

使用Aspen Plus软件对以Fe_2O_3为载氧体的生物质化学链气化系统进行模拟,分析温度、压力、载氧体与生物质摩尔比、水蒸气与生物质摩尔比等因素对合成气制备的影响;对不同生物质的气化条件进行优化;将气化制得的合成气通入M701F燃气轮机中发电,考察系统的发电效率。结果表明:常压下,不同生物质气化的优化温度均在740℃左右,此时制备的合成气冷煤气效率较高;提高反应压力有利于系统热量自平衡,但合成气的冷煤气效率降低;载氧体与生物质摩尔比的优化值与生物质中氧碳摩尔比呈负相关,且达到优化值时,气化环境中氧碳摩尔比在1.25左右;水蒸气通入气化系统后冷煤气效率可提高15.00%~20.00%,主要原因为H_2的产量显著增加,通入水蒸气后的气化环境的氧碳比在1.4左右时,制备合成气的冷煤气效率较高;系统的发电效率在30.00%~37.00%,高于生物质发电效率。  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) pyrolysis and gasification have been examined in a semi-batch reactor at temperatures of 700, 800 and 900 °C. Characteristic differences between pyrolysis and gasification of polystyrene (PS) have been evaluated with specific performance focus on the evolution of syngas flow rate, evolution of hydrogen flow rate, evolution of output power, syngas yield, hydrogen yield, energy yield, apparent thermal efficiency and syngas quality. Behavior of PS under either pyrolysis or gasification processes is compared to that of char based sample, such as paper and cardboard. In contrast to char based materials, PS gasification yielded less syngas, hydrogen and energy than pyrolysis at 700 °C. However, the gasification of PS yielded more syngas, hydrogen and energy than pyrolysis at 900 °C temperature. Gasification of PS is affected by reactor temperature more than PS pyrolysis. Syngas, hydrogen and energy yield increased exponentially with temperature in case of gasification. However, syngas and energy yield increased linearly with temperature having rather a mild slope in the case of pyrolysis. Pyrolysis resulted in higher syngas quality at all temperatures. Kinetics of hydrogen evolution from the PS pyrolysis is introduced. The Coats and Redfern method was used to determine the kinetic parameters, activation energy (Eact), pre-exponential factor (A) and reaction order (n). The model used is the nth order chemical reaction model. Kinetic parameters have been determined for three slow heating rates, namely 8, 10 and 12 °C/min. The average values obtained from the three heating rate experiments were used to compare the model with the experimental data.  相似文献

Air gasification of dried sewage sludge (DSS) was performed with olivine as the bed material and coal-based activated carbon as the tar-cracking additive in a two-stage gasifier to produce a hydrogen-rich producer gas with low tar content. Additionally, to investigate the possible regeneration of coal-based activated carbon, two different activating agents (carbon dioxide and steam) were applied. Finally, to reduce ammonia and tar contents, the performance of a Ni-coated distributor was examined. In the experiments, gasification at a steam to fuel ratio (STF) of 1.11 achieved a tar removal efficiency of 98% and a maximum hydrogen content of 34 vol.%. Furthermore, the activated carbon used for the gasification was less deactivated, compared to those used in the experiments without any reforming agent. When a Ni-coated distributor was applied, the ammonia content in the producer gas was significantly reduced to 11 ppm.  相似文献

In the present study, microwave plasma gasification of two kinds of coal and one kind of charcoal was performed with various O2/fuel ratios of 0–0.544. Plasma-forming gases used under 5 kW microwave plasma power were steam and air. The changes in the syngas composition and gasification efficiency in relation to the location of the coal supply to the reactor were also compared. As the O2/fuel ratio was increased, the H2 and CH4 contents in the syngas decreased, and CO and CO2 increased. When steam plasma was used to gasify the fuel with the O2/fuel ratio being zero, it was possible to produce syngas with a high content of hydrogen in excess of 60% with an H2/CO ratio greater than 3. Depending on the O2/fuel ratio, the composition of the syngas varied widely, and the H2/CO ratio necessary for using the syngas to produce synthetic fuel could be adjusted by changing the O2/fuel ratio alone. Carbon conversion increased as the O2/fuel ratio was increased, and cold gas efficiency was maximized when the O2/fuel ratio was 0.272. Charcoal with high carbon and fixed carbon content had a lower carbon conversion and cold gas efficiency than the coals used in this study.  相似文献

A kinetic model of algae gasification for hydrogen production with air and steam as gasification agent and was developed. The developed model was based on kinetic parameters available in the literature. The objective was to study the effect of critical parameters such as reaction temperature, stoichiometric ratio (SR) and steam flow rate (SFR) on H2/CO ratio in the syngas, hydrogen yield, and lower heating value (LHV) of the produced syngas. Model formulation was validated with experimental results on air-steam gasification of biomass conducted in an atmospheric fluidized bed gasifier. The results showed that higher temperature contributed to lower H2/CO, while higher SFR resulted in higher H2/CO. The LHV of producer gas increased with SFR and gasification temperature.  相似文献
