An efficient and accurate four node shear flexible composite laminated plate element with six degrees of freedom per node, viz. three displacement (u, v, w) along the x‐, y‐and z‐axis, two rotations (θx and θy) about y‐ and x‐ axis and twist (θxy) is proposed in this paper. A coupled displacement field is derived using moment–shear equilibrium and in‐plane equilibrium of composite strips along the x‐ and y‐axis. The displacement field so derived not only depends on the element co‐ordinates but is a function of extensional, bending–extensional coupling, bending and transverse shear stiffnesses as well. The element assumes bi‐cubic polynomial distribution with sixteen generalized undetermined coefficients for the transverse displacement. The element stiffness matrix and load vector are computed numerically by employing 3×3 Gauss–Legendre product rules. The element is found to be devoid of shear locking and does not exhibit any spurious modes. A series of numerical examples are solved to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed element. Further, the element is found to yield consistently accurate results even with coarse mesh sizes over a wide range of thick plate regimes. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis is presented for the large amplitude vibration of symmetric and unsymmetric composite plates using the non‐linear finite element modal reduction method. The problem is first reduced to a set of Duffing‐type modal equations using the finite element modal reduction method. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that no updating of the non‐linear stiffness matrices is needed. Without loss of generality, accurate frequency ratios for the fundamental mode and the higher modes of a composite plate at various values of maximum deflection are then determined by using the Runge–Kutta numerical integration scheme. The procedure for obtaining proper initial conditions for the periodic plate motions is very time consuming. Thus, an alternative scheme (the harmonic balance method) is adopted and assessed, as it was employed to formulate the large amplitude free vibration of beams in a previous study, and the results agreed well with the elliptic solution. The numerical results that are obtained with the harmonic balance method agree reasonably well with those obtained with the Runge–Kutta method. The contribution of each linear mode to the maximum deflection of a plate can also be obtained. The frequency ratios for isotropic and composite plates at various maximum deflections are presented, and convergence of frequencies with the number of finite elements, number of linear modes, and number of harmonic terms is also studied. Thin‐walled structures, when compressed, are prone to buckling. To fully utilize the capabilities of such structures, the post‐buckling response should be considered and optimized in the design process. This work presents a novel method for gradient‐based design optimization of the post‐buckling performance of structures. The post‐buckling analysis is based on Koiter's asymptotic method. To perform gradient‐based optimization, the design sensitivities of the Koiter factors are derived, and new design optimization formulations based on the Koiter factors are presented. The proposed optimization formulations are demonstrated on a composite square plate and a curved panel where the post‐buckling stability is optimized. This paper presents a unified technique for solving the plate bending problems by extending the scaled boundary finite element method. The formulation is based on the three‐dimensional governing equation without enforcing the kinematics of plate theory. Only the in‐plane dimensions are discretised into finite elements. Any two‐dimensional displacement‐based elements can be employed. The solution along the thickness is expressed analytically by using a matrix function. The proposed technique is consistent with the three‐dimensional theory and applicable to both thick and thin plates without exhibiting the numerical locking phenomenon. Moreover, the use of higher order spectral elements allows the proposed technique to better represent curved boundaries and to achieve high accuracy and fast convergence. Numerical examples of various plate structures with different thickness‐to‐length ratios demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of the proposed technique. The focus of this paper is two‐dimensional computational modelling of water flow in unsaturated soils consisting of weakly conductive disconnected inclusions embedded in a highly conductive connected matrix. When the inclusions are small, a two‐scale Richards’ equation‐based model has been proposed in the literature taking the form of an equation with effective parameters governing the macroscopic flow coupled with a microscopic equation, defined at each point in the macroscopic domain, governing the flow in the inclusions. This paper is devoted to a number of advances in the numerical implementation of this model. Namely, by treating the micro‐scale as a two‐dimensional problem, our solution approach based on a control volume finite element method can be applied to irregular inclusion geometries, and, if necessary, modified to account for additional phenomena (e.g. imposing the macroscopic gradient on the micro‐scale via a linear approximation of the macroscopic variable along the microscopic boundary). This is achieved with the help of an exponential integrator for advancing the solution in time. This time integration method completely avoids generation of the Jacobian matrix of the system and hence eases the computation when solving the two‐scale model in a completely coupled manner. Numerical simulations are presented for a two‐dimensional infiltration problem. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A load increment procedure has been presented to integrate with the finite strip method for the post‐buckling analysis of laminated plates when subjected to uniform end shortening. In‐plane loads are introduced to reflect the end shortening effect. The Newton–Raphson procedure is implemented to attend a solution that satisfies the equilibrium condition and at the same time meets the loading requirements. Error associated with loading condition is minimised by adjusting the load factor to preserve the rate of convergence. The enhanced capability can be easily incorporated into the context of both classical and shear deformation plate theories. A range of application has been described. Convergence test and numerical results are presented for isotropic plate and laminates with general lay‐up arrangement. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The fractal‐like finite element method (FFEM) is an accurate and efficient method to compute the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of different crack configurations. In the FFEM, the cracked/notched body is divided into singular and regular regions; both regions are modelled using conventional finite elements. A self‐similar fractal mesh of an ‘infinite’ number of conventional finite elements is used to model the singular region. The corresponding large number of local variables in the singular region around the crack tip is transformed to a small set of global co‐ordinates after performing a global transformation by using global interpolation functions. In this paper, we extend this method to analyse the singularity problems of sharp notched plates. The exact stress and displacement fields of a plate with a notch of general angle are derived for plane‐stress/strain conditions. These exact analytical solutions which are eigenfunction expansion series are used to perform the global transformation and to determine the SIFs. The use of the global interpolation functions reduces the computational cost significantly and neither post‐processing technique to extract SIFs nor special singular elements to model the singular region are needed. The numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the FFEM for sharp notched problems. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a mesh‐free approach is employed for buckling analysis of Mindlin plates that are subjected to in‐plane point loads. The radial point interpolation method (RPIM) is used to approximate displacements based on nodes. Variational forms of the system equations are established. Two‐step solution procedures are implemented. The non‐uniform pre‐stress distribution of plate is first obtained using the RPIM based on a two‐dimensional (2D) elastic plane stress problem. This predetermined non‐uniform pre‐stress distribution is then used to compute buckling loads of plate using the RPIM based on Mindlin's plate assumption. The RPIM can easily handle any number and location of nodes in the plate domain for a desired computational accuracy without major difficulties in solving the initial stresses and buckling loads. Numerical examples considered here include circular and rectangular Mindlin plates that are subjected to in‐plane uniform and point loads with different aspect ratios and boundary conditions. The present results are validated against the available analytical and numerical solutions. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A depth‐resolved wavenumber‐scanning interferometer (DRWSI) was built up to measure the out‐of‐plane displacement and normal strain field distributions on the front surface, rear surface and internal glass fibres of a glass fibre‐reinforced resin matrix composite before and after loading. Series of the fringe patterns were recorded, while the wavenumber of the laser, monitored online by an optical wedge, was scanned by tuning the temperature. Random sampling Fourier transform is used to overcome the non‐linearity of the wavenumber series. In the end, the distributions of the out‐of‐plane displacements and normal strain field are presented as the applied loads were 10 µm, 20 µm and 30 µm, respectively. In conclusion, DRWSI is a suitable method to measure the mechanical properties inside resin composite non‐destructively.  相似文献

Most of the previously performed damage analyses in composite laminates have been restricted to model the plain laminates without geometry discontinuities. In this study, a micromechanical damage model is combined with the finite element formulation and is implemented in the integration points to perform progressive damage analyses of composite laminates. A micromechanical damage model based on the stress transfer method is used to find the degradation of mechanical properties of composite laminates. Crack density is also used as an only state variable representing the damage in each Gauss point of every layer of the laminate. The strain energy and critical energy release rate criterion is also used to predict the damage initiation and evolution in each layer. A finite element discretization is used in conjunction with the user element definition capability of ABAQUS commercial software. To verify the developed procedure, a single element is analysed, and the obtained results are compared with available results in the literature. Progressive damage analyses are also performed for several symmetric cross‐ply laminates with and without geometry discontinuity subjected to matrix cracking damage mechanism under in‐plane loading conditions. The obtained mechanical response and variations of matrix crack density versus the applied load are also discussed.  相似文献

Scanning‐probe microscopy (SPM) is the method of choice for high‐resolution imaging of surfaces in science and industry. However, SPM systems are still considered as rather complex and costly scientific instruments, realized by delicate combinations of microscopic cantilevers, nanoscopic tips, and macroscopic read‐out units that require high‐precision alignment prior to use. This study introduces a concept of ultra‐compact SPM engines that combine cantilevers, tips, and a wide variety of actuator and read‐out elements into one single monolithic structure. The devices are fabricated by multiphoton laser lithography as it is a particularly flexible and accurate additive nanofabrication technique. The resulting SPM engines are operated by optical actuation and read‐out without manual alignment of individual components. The viability of the concept is demonstrated in a series of experiments that range from atomic‐force microscopy engines offering atomic step height resolution, their operation in fluids, and to 3D printed scanning near‐field optical microscopy. The presented approach is amenable to wafer‐scale mass fabrication of SPM arrays and capable to unlock a wide range of novel applications that are inaccessible by current approaches to build SPMs.  相似文献

The development of a robust and efficient quadratic Mindlin‐plate‐bending elements mainly by the use of non‐conforming displacement modes is presented in this paper. A brief review on the previous efforts to develop efficient non‐conforming Mindlin plate bending elements is also given. The behaviour of the newly proposed plate element is further improved by the combined use of nonconforming displacement modes, the selectively reduced integration scheme, and the assumed shear strain fields. Thus, the newly developed element has been designated as ‘NMS‐8P’. The improvement achieved may be attributable to the fact that the merits of these improvement techniques are merged in the formation of the new element in a complementary manner. The proposed 8‐node element passes the patch tests, does not show spurious mechanism, and does not produce shear locking phenomena even with distorted meshes. It is also shown that the element produces reliable solutions through numerical tests for standard benchmark problems. Copypright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a meshfree Galerkin method that is based on the first‐order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to study the elastic buckling behaviour of stiffened and un‐stiffened folded plates under partial in‐plane edge loads. The un‐stiffened folded plates are modelled as assemblies of flat plates. The stiffness and initial stress matrices of the flat plates are derived by the meshfree Galerkin method. A treatment is implemented to modify the stiffness and initial stress matrices, and the matrices are then superposed to obtain the stiffness and initial stress matrix of the entire folded plate. The analytical process for stiffened folded plates is similar, except that the effects of the stiffeners must be taken into account. Because no mesh is required, the proposed method is superior for studying problems that would involve remeshing in the finite element method. Several examples are employed to show the convergence and accuracy of the proposed method. The results obtained show good agreement with the results computed from the finite element analysis software ANSYS. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend to Reissner‐Mindlin plate bending problems a technique, originally proposed in the context of two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional continua, for recovering fully equilibrated stresses from the solution of a compatible finite element model. The technique involves partition of unity functions and the analyses of overlapping star patches modelled with hybrid equilibrium plate elements. The patches are subjected to balanced systems of loads composed of partitioned and fictitious loads, where the latter are derived from the stresses of the compatible solution. The special case of assumed linear displacement fields of both deflection and rotation for the compatible model is included. This case requires additional fields of stress resultants to correct possible rotational imbalances of star patches, and these are derived elementwise. Other cases of nonconforming elements are briefly considered. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of these techniques in terms of the deviation of the recovery, which compares the complementary strain energy of a recovered solution with that obtained by a global equilibrated analysis based on the same stress approximations.  相似文献

We propose a novel sensitivity based approach that predicts and explains the accuracy of material parameter identification for a composite plate using the Projected Finite Element Update Method. A typical experiment using the Projected Finite Element Update Method technique involves a plate specimen held at 3 or 4 supports and bent under the application of a point load. Two‐Dimensional Digital Image Correlation is used to measure the pseudo displacements resulting from the projection of out‐of‐plane deflection of the plate onto the image plane. A cost function relating the projected numerical and experimental displacement fields is then minimised to obtain the material parameters. It is shown that the contribution of a specific material parameter in the observed displacement field influences the accuracy of its identification. The contributions from material parameters are first quantified in terms of sensitivity criterion that may be tailored by changing the elements of test configuration such as location of supports, the load application point, and the specimen geometry. Several test configurations are designed by maximising the sensitivities corresponding to individual material parameters. The relevance of proposed sensitivity criterion in these configurations is then validated through material identification in simulated experiments with added Gaussian noise. Finally, a thin CFRP plate is tested under these configurations to demonstrate the practical use of this approach. The proposed approach helps in robust estimation of the in‐plane elastic moduli from a bent composite plate with a simple Two‐Dimensional Digital Image Correlation setup without requiring measurement of the actual plate deflection or curvatures.  相似文献

We present in this paper an efficient and accurate low‐order solid‐shell element formulation for analyses of large deformable multilayer shell structures with non‐linear materials. The element has only displacement degrees of freedom (dofs), and an optimal number of enhancing assumed strain (EAS) parameters to pass the patch tests (both membrane and out‐of‐plane bending) and to remedy volumetric locking. Based on the mixed Fraeijs de Veubeke‐Hu‐Washizu (FHW) variational principle, the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane bending behaviours are improved and the locking associated with (nearly) incompressible materials is avoided via a new efficient enhancement of strain tensor. Shear locking and curvature thickness locking are resolved effectively by using the assumed natural strain (ANS) method. Two non‐linear 3‐D constitutive models (Mooney–Rivlin material and hyperelastoplastic material at finite strain) are applied directly without requiring the enforcement of the plane‐stress assumption. In particular, we give a simple derivation for the hyperelastoplastic model using spectral representations. In addition, the present element has a well‐defined lumped mass matrix, and provides double‐side contact surfaces for shell contact problems. With the dynamics referred to a fixed inertial frame, the present element can be used to analyse multilayer shell structures undergoing large overall motion. Numerical examples involving static analyses and implicit/explicit dynamic analyses of multilayer shell structures with both material and geometric non‐linearities are presented, and compared with existing results obtained from other shell elements and from a meshless method. It is shown that elements that did not pass the out‐of‐plane bending patch test could not provide accurate results, as compared to the present element formulation, which passed the out‐of‐plane bending patch test. The present element proves to be versatile and efficient in the modelling and analyses of general non‐linear composite multilayer shell structures. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A refined non‐conforming triangular plate/shell element for geometric non‐linear analysis of plates/shells using the total Lagrangian/updated Lagrangian approach is constructed in this paper based on the refined non‐conforming element method for geometric non‐linear analysis. The Allman's triangular plane element with vertex degrees of freedom and the refined triangular plate‐bending element RT9 are used to construct the present element. Numerical examples demonstrate that the accuracy of the new element is quite high in the geometric non‐linear analysis of plates/shells. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A cell‐based smoothed discrete shear gap method (CS‐FEM‐DSG3) based on the first‐order shear deformation theory (FSDT) was recently proposed for static and dynamic analyses of Mindlin plates. In this paper, the CS‐FEM‐DSG3 is extended to the C0‐type higher‐order shear deformation plate theory (C0‐HSDT) and is incorporated with damping–spring systems for dynamic responses of Mindlin plates on viscoelastic foundations subjected to a moving sprung vehicle. At each time step of dynamic analysis, one four‐step procedure is performed including the following: (1) transformation of the weight of a four‐wheel vehicle into the sprung masses at wheels; (2) dynamic analysis of the sprung mass of wheels to determine the contact forces; (3) transformation of the contact forces into loads at nodes of plate elements; and (4) dynamic analysis of the plate elements on viscoelastic foundations. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed method are verified by comparing its numerical solutions with those of other available numerical results. A single‐camera special stereo‐DIC (SS‐DIC) is proposed for accurate virtual fields method (VFM) identification. The single‐camera SS‐DIC allows accurate surface 3D deformation measurements using a single colour camera and a specially designed colour separation device. It not only effectively eliminates the unavoidable out‐of‐plane movement/rotation due to unideal in‐plane loading but also delivers uniformly distributed measurement points that brings great simplicity and convenience for internal virtual work calculation in VFM. In addition, since only a single camera is used for stereovision, the proposed SS‐DIC system requires no complicated synchronisation devices. The effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method are evaluated by heterogeneous deformation experiments of a holed aluminium alloy and 304 stainless steel plate. Combined with a high‐speed colour camera, the proposed method is expected to be a simple and practical method for the calibration of material constitutive model under intermediate and high strain rate conditions using VFM.  相似文献

Semi‐analytical 3‐D elasticity solutions are presented for orthotropic multi‐directional functionally graded plates using the differential quadrature method (DQM) based on the state‐space formalism. Material properties are assumed to vary not only through the thickness but also in the in‐plane directions following an exponential law. The graded in‐plane domain is solved numerically via the DQM, while exact solutions are sought for the thickness domain using the state‐space method. Convergence studies are performed, and the present hybrid semi‐analytical method is validated by comparing numerical results with the exact solutions for a conventional unidirectional functionally graded plate. Finally, effects of material gradient indices on the displacement and stress fields of the plates are investigated and discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
