We investigate thin phase polarization holographic gratings recorded with two waves with orthogonal linear polarizations in materials in which illumination with linearly/circularly polarized light gives rise to linear/circular birefringence. The theoretical analysis shows that the presence of circular photoanisot-ropy changes significantly the diffraction characteristics of the gratings. The intensities of the waves diffracted in the +1 and -1 orders of diffraction and their ratio depend substantially on the reconstructing-wave polarization. Experiments with films of side-chain liquid-crystalline azobenzene polyester that is a photoanisotropic material of the considered type confirm the unusual polarization properties. It is shown that polarization holography may be used for real-time simultaneous measurement of photoinduced linear and circular birefringence.  相似文献

We develop the Jones and Mueller matrices for structures that allow control of the path length difference between two linear orthogonal polarizations and consider the effect of placing multiple devices in series. Specifically, we find that full polarization modulation (measurement of Stokes Q, U, and V) can be achieved by placing two such modulators in series if the relative angles of the beam-splitting grids with respect to the analyzer orientation are appropriately chosen. Such a device has several potential advantages over a spinning wave plate modulator for measuring astronomical polarization in the far infrared through millimeter: (i) The use of small, linear motions eliminates the need for cryogenic rotational bearings; (ii) the phase flexibility allows measurement of circular as well as linear polarization; and (iii) this architecture allows for both multiwavelength and broadband modulation. Scattering in biological tissue can degrade imaging contrast and reduce the probe depth. Polarization-based measurement has shown its advantages in overcoming such drawbacks. Here, linear and circular polarization degree imaging is applied to a comblike metal target submerged in Intralipid solutions. Contrasts of the metal bars are measured quantitatively as functions of the Intralipid concentration and the submersion depths. Different behaviors in contrast for linear and circular polarizations are compared. Contributions to the background of circular polarization degree images by backscattering, snake, and diffusive photons are examined carefully.  相似文献

A systematic and comprehensive analysis of the interference of four umbrellalike beams (lFUB) is provided based on the reciprocal space theory. The concept of pattern contrast is extended to the case of the IFUB, and it is indicated that a uniform contrast for all the interference terms can be obtained by properly choosing the beam ratio and the polarization of each beam. Different polarization combinations, including linear light and linear light, circular light and circular light, and linear light and circular light, have been discussed for the purpose of maximum uniform contrast. It is shown that the use of circular light may generally improve the uniform contrast. This study may lay a theoretical foundation for holographic fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) periodic microstructures, such as simple cubic, body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, or trigonal lattice.  相似文献

The influence of incident polarized light, refractive index, and size parameter of the scatterer on achievable resolution and contrast (image quality) of polarization-gated transillumination imaging in turbid media is reported here. Differential polarization detection led to significant improvement of image quality of an object embedded in a medium of small-sized scatterers (diameter Dor=lambda,g>or=0.7), the improvement in image quality was less pronounced using either linear or circular polarization gating when the refractive index of the scatterer was high (ns=1.59), but for a lower value of refractive index (ns=1.37), image quality improved with the differential circular polarization gating. We offer a plausible explanation for these observations.  相似文献

A comprehensive theoretical study is presented on the polarization state of THz wave radiation from a two-colour laser-induced plasma, and its dependency on optical pulse polarizations and phase difference. We extend the so-called photocurrent model to calculate three-dimensional distribution of photocurrent from which the polarization state of the THz radiation is calculated. It is shown that the calculation results from the photocurrent model, is in agreement with the previously reported experiments. Moreover, we show the possibility of creating any desired polarization state (i.e. elliptical, circular or linear) for the THz radiation through such generation mechanism by adjusting proper parameters.  相似文献

A laser beam with circular polarization can be converted into either radial or azimuthal polarization by a microfabricated spiral phase plate and a radial (or azimuthal)-type linear analyzer. The resulting polarization is axially symmetric and is able to produce tightly focused light fields beyond the diffraction limit. We describe in detail the theory behind the technique and the experimental verification of the polarization both in the far field and at the focus of a high numerical aperture lens. Vector properties of the beam under strong focusing conditions were observed by comparing the fluorescence images corresponding to the focal intensity distribution for both radial and azimuthal polarizations. The technique discussed here may easily be implemented to a wide range of optical instruments and devices that require the use of tightly focused light beams.  相似文献

We describe the change of the spatial distribution of the state of polarization occurring during two-dimensional (2D) imaging through a multilayer and in particular through a layered metallic flat lens. Linear or circular polarization of incident light is not preserved due to the difference in the amplitude transfer functions for the TM and TE polarizations. In effect, the transfer function and the point spread function (PSF) that characterize 2D imaging through a multilayer both have a matrix form, and cross-polarization coupling is observed for spatially modulated beams with a linear or circular incident polarization. The PSF in a matrix form is used to characterize the resolution of the superlens for different polarization states. We demonstrate how the 2D PSF may be used to design a simple diffractive nanoelement consisting of two radial slits. The structure assures the separation of nondiffracting radial beams originating from two slits in the mask and exhibits an interesting property of a backward power flow in between the two rings.  相似文献

We demonstrate a novel technique for measuring ultralow linear birefringence of supermirrors (high-reflectivity dielectric mirror coatings). The polarimetric cavity ringdown technique is used in conjunction with the differential detection scheme with circular polarization to enhance the measurement sensitivity. The technique could, in principle, provide the convenience and reliability of linear detection signals and a reasonable tolerance to experimental imperfections. Phase retardation and orientation of each cavity mirror can be determined separately without the influence of the other mirror. The minimum detectable phase retardation achieved experimentally with this technique is ~6 x 10(-8) rad.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate light propagation through materials with both linear and circular anisotropy and find the relation of the amplitude and polarization transfer functions to the four anisotropic characteristics: linear circular birefringence, and linear and circular dichroism. We determine these four characteristics of anisotropic samples by measuring the output intensity and polarization corresponding to different input polarization azimuths and fitting the theoretical and experimental results. In our experiments we have used films of side-chain azobenzene polyesters in which optical anisotropy had been previously induced on illumination with elliptically polarized light.  相似文献

An etched calcite square-wave retarder is designed, fabricated, and demonstrated as an illuminator for an interlaced polarization computer-generated hologram (PCGH). The calcite square-wave retarder enables alternating columns of orthogonal linear polarizations to illuminate the interlaced PCGH. Together, these components produce a speckled, tangentially polarized PCGH diffraction pattern with a measured ratio of polarization of 84% and a degree of linear polarization of 0.81. An experimental alignment tolerance analysis is also reported.  相似文献

We report on measurements of linear polarization ratio in high-birefringence fibers as a function of wavelength. Comparison with standard step-index and with dispersion-shifted fibers reconfirms that the modes of polarization-maintaining fibers are not linearly polarized.  相似文献

A synchronous polarimeter was set up for the measurement of small rotation angles of the polarization plane of light. The polarimeter is based on a polarizer-Faraday modulator-analyzer structure with a synchronous detection scheme, which produces a linear system response. The theoretical background is studied, and the system performance is investigated experimentally. We achieved an accuracy of the order of 10(-4) deg, or 5 mg/dl of glucose in a 1-cm light path.  相似文献

A method of considering the circular and linear birefringent properties of a material on the basis of circular and linear polarization eigenstates is presented theoretically and experimentally. A polarized common-path optical heterodyne interferometer with respect to both right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized light was set up. It was used in conjunction with a phase lock-in technique to measure the optical activity of quartz crystal in real time. The signal-to-noise ratio of the measured phase change caused by the lateral displacement of quartz cornus was 75, which corresponded to a measuring accuracy of 10(-7). This novel method, in which a true-phase-sensitive optical heterodyne interferometer is used, has higher detection sensitivity and higher immunity to environmental disturbances.  相似文献

A trilayer pellicle that consists of a high-index center layer that is symmetrically coated on both sides by a low-index film can be designed to produce differential reflection and transmission phase shifts of +/- 90 degrees at oblique incidence and equal throughput for the p and the s polarizations. Such a device splits a beam of incident linearly polarized light into two orthogonal circularly polarized components that travel in well-separated angular directions. Examples of infrared dual quarter-wave retarders that use a symmetrically coated Ge pellicle at 77 degrees angle of incidence are presented. A 50-50% splitter requires a symmetric pellicle with at least five layers. Error analysis shows that the thicknesses of the high-index layers must be tightly controlled. These circular polarization beam splitters are intended for operation with a well-collimated light source and can be used as the basis of a novel circular polarization Michelson interferometer.  相似文献

We derive analytic expressions for the polarization characteristics of light emerging from a magneto-optical medium possessing arbitrary contributions from linear and circular birefringence as well as magnetic circular dichroism. The medium is placed inside a static magnetic field. The rotation of the plane of polarization and the ellipticity of the resultant light exhibit interesting characteristics that can be a useful guide in the design and analysis of new photonic devices. Furthermore, the Jones matrices are derived in all cases, including for elliptical dichroism, indicating the role of hyperbolic trigonometric functions in modeling the effects of dichroism. Finally, implications for experimental detection of the polarization state and the limits on the performance of optical isolators are discussed.  相似文献

Corrosion behaviors of the laser-welded Ni–49.4 at.% Ti shape memory alloy and base metal in 0.9% NaCl solution were investigated by means of electrochemical techniques (the open circuit potential measurement, linear and potentiodynamic polarizations). The results showed that corrosion resistance of the laser-welded NiTi alloy is better than that of the base metal. Compared to the base metal, the laser-welded NiTi alloy exhibits higher open circuit potential, higher polarization resistance, a wider passive region and higher breakdown potential. The improvement of corrosion resistance of the laser-welded NiTi alloy is ascribed to a smoother, defect free surface and an absence of carbides.  相似文献
