Four experiments examined automatic and intentional activation of task sets in a switching paradigm. Experiment 1 demonstrated incidental task sequence learning that was not accompanied by verbalizable task sequence knowledge. This learning did not affect task shift cost and may be attributed to automatic task-set activation. In Experiment 2, both shift cost and learning effect increased when the response–cue interval was short, indicating the influence of residual, persisting activation of the preceding task set. In Experiment 3, learning disappeared with a long cue–stimulus interval (CSI), which resulted in a strong preparation effect. This preparation, however, reduced reaction time level but was not specific to task shifts. Finally, experiment 4 showed that a within-subject CSI variation also leads to reduced shift costs. Together, the data suggest an activational account of task preparation and may have relevant implications for inhibitory accounts. Examines the effects of intentionality and attention to contextual organization in spatial memory. Middle-aged and older women were asked either to study the placement of objects in a contextually organized panorama or to engage in incidental orienting activities, which gave them exposure to the array without awareness that subsequent reconstruction would be required. The incidental conditions required differing degrees of attention to contextual spatial relations. The pattern of results was similar for both age groups. Although some spatial location information was remembered without intention, even when subjects were not required to attend to spatial relations in the array, reconstruction was enhanced by intentionality or by the goal-relevant activity of attending to contextual spatial relations. Orienting activities involving attention to contextual spatial organization or relations between items produced better reconstruction than orienting activities requiring attention only to individual items. In fact, the incidental conditions requiring attention to spatial relations produced performance equal to that in the intentional condition. Although intentionality was not necessary for good reconstruction on a contextually organized task, attention to relations between items was necessary. In 3 experiments, using a total of 207 undergraduates, 2 criteria of central importance to the identification of an automatic process were studied: insensitivity to competing task loads and to strategy manipulation. Past experimentation using these criteria has led to the view that judgments of frequency of occurrence are a result of an automatic process. Exp I reexamined the effect of competing load. Results indicate that judgments of frequency were markedly affected by the level of difficulty of a secondary task. Results from Exp II, in which the level of processing was manipulated in conjunction with intention, suggest that although intention to code frequency may not have an effect on frequency judgments under all conditions, there are strategic effects on coding nonetheless. In Exp III, variation in intentionality and presentation time of words was included to show that under some conditions, in fact, an effect of intention can be found as well. Strong evidence exists for an age-related impairment in associative processing under intentional encoding and retrieval conditions, but the status of incidental associative processing has been less clear. In 2 experiments, we examined the effects of age on rapid response learning—the incidentally learned stimulus–response association that results in a reduction in priming when a learned response becomes inappropriate for a new task. Specifically, we tested whether priming was equivalently sensitive in both age groups to reversal of the task-specific decision cue. Experiment 1 showed that cue inversion reduced priming in both age groups with a speeded inside/outside classification task, and in Experiment 2, cue inversion eliminated priming on an associative version of this task. Thus, the ability to encode an association between a stimulus and its initial task-specific response appears to be preserved in aging. The authors investigated depth-of-processing effects on conceptual priming by comparing incidental (implicit) and intentional (explicit) tests of word association. In Experiment 1, depth of processing at study influenced priming of weak and medium associates but not of strong associates. In Experiment 2, depth of processing influenced priming of weak associates but not of compound phrases (e.g., coathanger), whose preexperimental association strength matched that of weak associates. In Experiment 3, the same pattern persisted when study was auditory and test was visual, ensuring that priming was conceptual and not perceptual. In all experiments, in matched intentional tests, depth-of-processing effects occurred for all association strengths and for both phrases and associates, suggesting that the incidental tests were uncontaminated by voluntary retrieval, because they showed depth-of-processing effects only for some materials and not others, within the same participants and tests. Because depth-of-processing effects on involuntary free-association priming depend on the presence versus absence of a cohesive preexperimental representation, the memory-systems and conceptual/perceptual processing approaches to memory-test dissociations require modification to account for component processes of conceptual priming. Regional brain activity associated with intentional and incidental memory retrieval was studied with PET. Previously studied and new words were presented in either an intentional or an incidental memory task. Type of task was crossed with an encoding manipulation ('deep' vs 'shallow') which varied the probability that studied items would be remembered. In both tasks, deeply encoded items were associated with greater activation in the left hippocampus than were items that had received shallow encoding, suggesting that the involvement of the hippocampus in memory retrieval is independent of whether remembering is intentional or incidental. Right prefrontal and bilateral parietal cortex were more activated during the international task than during the incidental task, irrespective of encoding condition. Thus, these regions play a more extensive role in memory retrieval when remembering is intentional.  相似文献

The representation of fractions in long-term memory (LTM) was investigated by examining the automatic processing of such numbers in a physical comparison task, and their intentional processing in a numerical comparison task. The size congruity effect (SiCE) served as a marker of automatic processing and consequently as an indicator of the access to the primitives of numerical representation in LTM. Mixed pairs composed of a natural number and a fraction showed both a SiCE and a distance effect. The SiCE for mixed pairs was stable across relative sizes of natural numbers compared to the fraction digits (Experiment 4). However, comparing pairs of fractions revealed a strong influence of fractional components: An inverse SiCE was found for pairs of unit fractions (Experiment 1), while no SiCE was found for pairs of non-unit fractions (Experiments 2–3). This leads to the conclusions that: (1) there are no unique representations of distinct fraction values in LTM, and (2) there is a representation of a “generalized fraction” as an “entity smaller than one” that emerges from the notational structure common to all fractions. A review of the literature indicates that although event frequency is known to have many behavioral consequences, the intervening representation process(es) are not well understood. Storage of frequency information poses a number of theoretical and methodological problems. 4 hypotheses regarding frequency representation are distinguished (trace-strength, multiple-trace, numerical inference, and multiple-process), and evidence from previous experiments using verbal, nonverbal, and nonstimulus events is evaluated. None of the proposed models can be ruled out entirely, although the multiple-trace hypothesis offers the best explanation for data obtained from "verbal" studies. Unfortunately, nearly all the data collected to date involve verbal stimuli and traditional verbal-learning paradigms, raising the question of representativeness. If frequency can be stored other than by trace multiplexing, it would most likely show up in other event domains. Acquisition of frequency information is typically by incidental means, making such factors as set, task characteristics, and event composition (i.e., anything that could control attention during acquisition) doubly important. The usual superiority in frequency-of-occurrence judgments of younger vs older subjects was hypothesized to result from greater strategic encoding of the materials conveying frequency information. A subject-paced, visual search task was designed to control nontarget word encoding. Relative frequency judgments for the nontarget word pairs were equally accurate for younger and older subjects, and performance of both groups was above chance. Results suggest that strategic cover-task encoding can induce age differences in incidental frequency processing. Consistent with a nonoptimal as opposed to an optimal view, automatic processes require only minimal capacity for above-chance performance, but additional strategic resources can increase performance. Depth-of-processing effects on incidental perceptual memory tests could reflect (a) contamination by voluntary retrieval, (b) sensitivity of involuntary retrieval to prior conceptual processing, or (c) a deficit in lexical processing during graphemic study tasks that affects involuntary retrieval. The authors devised an extension of incidental test methodology--making conjunctive predictions about response times as well as response proportions--to discriminate among these alternatives. They used graphemic, phonemic, and semantic study tasks, and a word-stem completion test with incidental, intentional, and inclusion instructions. Semantic study processing was superior to phonemic study processing in the intentional and inclusion tests, but semantic and phonemic study processing produced equal priming in the incidental test, showing that priming was uncontaminated by voluntary retrieval--a conclusion reinforced by the response-time data--and that priming was insensitive to prior conceptual processing. The incidental test nevertheless showed a priming deficit following graphemic study processing, supporting the lexical-processing hypothesis. Adding a lexical decision to the 3 study tasks eliminated the priming deficit following graphemic study processing, but did not influence priming following phonemic and semantic processing. The results provide the first clear evidence that depth-of-processing effects on perceptual priming can reflect lexical processes, rather than voluntary contamination or conceptual processes.  相似文献

Two studies compared young and older adults' memory for location information after brief intervals. Experiment 1 found that accuracy of intentional spatial memory for individual locations was similar in young and older participants for set sizes of 3 and 6. Both groups also encoded individual locations in relation to the larger configuration of locations. Experiment 2 showed that like young adults, older adults' latency to respond to a test probe in a letter working memory task was negatively influenced by spatial information that was irrelevant to the task. This interference effect indicated preserved incidental memory for spatial information in older adults. Together, these data suggest that initial encoding of spatial information for relatively small numbers of items is largely preserved in healthy older adults and that representations of spatial information persist over short intervals. Traditionally, dual-task interference has been attributed to the consequences of task load exceeding capacity limitations. However, the current study demonstrates that in addition to task load, the mutual compatibility of the concurrent processes modulates whether 2 tasks can be performed in parallel. In 2 psychological refractory period experiments, task load and process compatibility were independently varied. In Experiment 1, participants performed 2 mental rotation tasks. Task load (rotation angle) and between-task compatibility in rotation direction were varied. Results suggest more considerable parallel execution of compatible than of incompatible operations, arguing for the need to attribute dual-task interference not only to structural but also to functional capacity limitations. Experiment 2 tested whether functional capacity limitations to dual-task performance can be caused only by demanding processes or whether they are also induced by relatively automatic processes. Results indicate that an irrelevant circular movement of Stimulus 2 interfered more with mental rotation of Stimulus 1 if the rotation directions were opposite than if they were equal. Exemplar sequencing effects in incidental and intentional unsupervised category learning were investigated to illuminate how people form categories without an external teacher. Stimuli were perfectly separable into 2 categories based on 1 of 2 dimensions of variation. Sequencing of the first 20 training stimuli was manipulated. In the blocked condition, 10 Category A stimuli were followed by 10 Category B stimuli. In the intermixed condition, these 20 stimuli were ordered randomly. Experiment 1 revealed an interaction between learning mode and sequence, with better intentional learning for intermixed sequences but better incidental learning for blocked sequences. Experiment 2 showed that manipulating trial-to-trial variability along each dimension can impact intentional learning. Training sequences that emphasized variation along the category-relevant dimension resulted in better performance than sequences that emphasized variation along the category-irrelevant dimension. The results suggest that unsupervised category learning is influenced by the mode of learning and the order and nature of encountered exemplars. There is contradicting evidence as to whether irrelevant but significant emotional stimuli can be processed outside the focus of attention. In the current study, participants were asked to ignore emotional and neutral pictures while performing a competing task. In Experiment 1, orienting of attention to distracting pictures was manipulated via a peripheral cue. In Experiment 2, attentional load was varied, either leaving spare attention to process the distracting pictures or, alternatively, depleting attentional resources. Although all pictures were task irrelevant, negative pictures were found to interfere more with performance in comparison to neutral pictures. This finding suggests that processing of negative stimuli is automatic in the sense that it does not require execution of conscious monitoring. However, interference occurred only when sufficient attention was available for picture processing. Hence, processing of negative pictures was dependent on sufficient attentional resources. What was noted by E. J. Langer (1978) remains true today: that much of contemporary psychological research is based on the assumption that people are consciously and systematically processing incoming information in order to construe and interpret their world and to plan and engage in courses of action. As did Langer, the authors question this assumption. First, they review evidence that the ability to exercise such conscious, intentional control is actually quite limited, so that most of moment-to-moment psychological life must occur through nonconscious means if it is to occur at all. The authors then describe the different possible mechanisms that produce automatic, environmental control over these various phenomena and review evidence establishing both the existence of these mechanisms as well as their consequences for judgments, emotions, and behavior. Three major forms of automatic self-regulation are identified: an automatic effect of perception on action, automatic goal pursuit, and a continual automatic evaluation of one's experience. From the accumulating evidence, the authors conclude that these various nonconscious mental systems perform the lion's share of the self-regulatory burden, beneficently keeping the individual grounded in his or her current environment. Research has illustrated dissociations between "cognitive" and "action" systems, suggesting that different representations may underlie phenomenal experience and visuomotor behavior. However, these systems also interact. The present studies show a necessary interaction when semantic processing of an object is required for an appropriate action. Experiment 1 demonstrated that a semantic task interfered with grasping objects appropriately by their handles, but a visuospatial task did not. Experiment 2 assessed performance on a visuomotor task that had no semantic component and showed a reversal of the effects of the concurrent tasks. In Experiment 3, variations on concurrent word tasks suggested that retrieval of semantic information was necessary for appropriate grasping. In all, without semantic processing, the visuomotor system can direct the effective grasp of an object, but not in a manner that is appropriate for its use. Two studies investigated the effects of orienting tasks on retention of prose material. Exp I, with 200 undergraduates, assessed several such tasks under incidental and intentional instructions. Dependent variables were recall and recall per unit time (efficiency). Outlining and copying tasks generated good recall that forced more interaction with the material. A sorting task affected the quality of interaction with material. Exp II, with 280 undergraduates, investigated the effects of different strengths of instructions. Strong instructions induced more interaction, resulting in better recall under intentional than under incidental instructions. Intentional instructions had greater impact on less efficient tasks and less effect on more efficient tasks. Maximum recall and efficiency occurred with simple instructions to read the passage. Inferences made about actors influence subsequent processing about those actors. Three experiments conducted in the context of spontaneous trait inference (STI) making demonstrate that such influences occur can either occur via automatic processes or via controlled processes. Results from Experiment 1 demonstrated that processing goals manipulated prior to encoding actor behavior affected the extent to which STIs automatically influenced subsequent responses but did not alter the extent to which STIs influenced those responses via controlled processes. Results from Experiment 2 showed that the extent to which STIs affected subsequent responding via the action of controlled processes were more affected by a delay between exposure to an actor behavior and the response task than the extent to which STIs affected task performance via the action of automatic processes. Finally, results from Experiment 3 showed that participants' subjective experience of awareness of their trait inferences is related to estimates of the extent to which controlled processing is involved in the production of their future responses but not to estimates of the extent to which those responses are affected by automatic processing. In three experiments that used levels of processing and study time manipulations as independent variables in a word fragment completion task, the validity of the assumption of independence between recollection and automatic influences of memory was assessed. This assumption underlies the use of the process dissociation procedure (Jacoby, 1991), a tool suggested for distinguishing the different contributions of recollection and automatic influences of memory. Overall, it appeared that semantic processing, as compared with physical processing at study, positively affected recollection but negatively affected automatic influences of memory in word fragment completion. This negative effect on the automatic influences was reduced when the available study time decreased. The incompatibility of these results with the assumption of independence between recollection and automatic influences of memory and their impact on the applicability of the process dissociation procedure are discussed.  相似文献

Studied the effects of 2 types of incidental learning paradigms and the influence of different kinds of stimulus relationships on 168 1st and 6th graders' selective learning processes. Eight pairs of colored pictures were presented in each experimental condition. Incidental instructions were varied with respect to the absence vs presence of a concurrent intentional task. Within both instructional conditions, pairs of stimuli were either conceptually related, perceptually related, or unrelated. Free recall and pair retention were measured. Developmental similarities in selective learning processes were evidenced by younger and older children's equivalent patterns of stimulus selection. These patterns were significantly related to the type of incidental paradigm and stimulus relationship presented. Absolute amount of retention was positively related to age. It is concluded that patterns of stimulus selection and amount of learning reflect different processes and that both should serve as a criteria for developmentally studying selectivity.
