In this paper, an adaptive modulation scheme for the multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) frequency‐selective channels is investigated. We consider a scenario with precoded block‐based transceivers over spatially correlated Rayleigh multipath MIMO channels. To eliminate the inter‐block interference, the zero‐padding is used. The receiver is equipped with a MIMO minimum‐mean‐squared‐error decision feedback equalizer. The precoder aims to force each subchannel to have an identical signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio (SINR). To adjust the constellation size, the unbiased mean square error at the equalizer output is sent back to the transmitter. To simplify our analysis, the feedback channel is considered as instantaneous and error free. We first derive the probability density function of the overall SINR for flat fading and frequency‐selective channels. On the basis of the probability density function of the upper bound of the SINR, we evaluate the system performance. We present accurate closed‐form expressions of the average spectral efficiency, the average bit error rate and the outage probability. The derived expressions are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results. Furthermore, we analyze the effect of the channel spatial correlation. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in frequency‐selective fading environments has been well explored. However, OFDM is more prone to time‐selective fading compared with single‐carrier systems. Rapid time variations destroy the subcarrier orthogonality and introduce inter‐carrier interference (ICI). Besides this, obtaining reliable channel estimates for receiver equalization is a non‐trivial task in rapidly fading systems. Our work addresses the problem of channel estimation and ICI suppression by viewing the system as a state‐space model. The Kalman filter is employed to estimate the channel; this is followed by a time‐domain ICI mitigation filter that maximizes the signal‐to‐interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver. This method is seen to provide good estimation performance apart from significant SINR gain with low training overhead. Suitable bounds on the performance of the system are described; bit error rate (BER) performance over a time‐invariant Rayleigh fading channel serves as the lower bound, whereas BER performance over a doubly selective system with ICI as the dominant impairment provides the upper bound. The performance of wireless communication systems is improved over flat fading channel by using Alamouti coding scheme, which provides the quality of diversity gain. In this paper, performance analysis of symbol error rate (SER) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)–based power allocation (PA) for Alamouti amplify and forward (AF) relaying protocol using maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique is presented. Analytical expression of SER upper bound and SER approximation is derived for Alamouti AF relaying protocol with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation over Rayleigh fading channel and Rician fading channel. In addition, PSO‐based optimum PA factor is calculated on the basis of the minimum SER of proposed method. PSO‐based optimum PA gives 0.5 dB of improved signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) compared with the equal power allocation (EPA). The theoretical approximate SER result is compared with the simulated SER. The proposed protocol provides full diversity gain and reduces SER compared with the existing AF and decode and forward (DF) relaying protocols over Rayleigh fading channel and Rician fading channel.  相似文献

Mobile‐to‐mobile (M‐to‐M) communications are expected to play a crucial role in future wireless systems and networks. In this paper, we consider M‐to‐M multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) maximal ratio combining system and assess its performance in spatially correlated channels. The analysis assumes double‐correlated Rayleigh‐and‐Lognormal fading channels and is performed in terms of average symbol error probability, outage probability, and ergodic capacity. To obtain the receive and transmit spatial correlation functions needed for the performance analysis, we used a three‐dimensional (3D) M‐to‐M MIMO channel model, which takes into account the effects of fast fading and shadowing. The expressions for the considered metrics are derived as a function of the average signal‐to‐noise ratio per receive antenna in closed‐form and are further approximated using the recursive adaptive Simpson quadrature method. Numerical results are provided to show the effects of system parameters, such as distance between antenna elements, maximum elevation angle of scatterers, orientation angle of antenna array in the xy plane, angle between the xy plane and the antenna array orientation, and degree of scattering in the xy plane, on the system performance. This work presents a space‐frequency prefiltering scheme for slowly time‐varying TDD MC‐CDMA downlink communications with multiple antennas at the base station (BS). Unlike the conventional spatially uncorrelated block fading channel model, both channel variation in each packet and spatial correlation are considered in the design. In the TDD mode, the mobile terminals (MTs) transmit training signals at the end of each uplink packet. In the following downlink packet, the BS computes the signal weights on different antennas and subcarriers for each MT in each symbol period based on the channel state predicted from the received training signals. The goal is to minimize the total required transmit power while keeping the received signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio (SINR) as the target for each MT. Moreover, the maximum packet length for satisfying the SINR requirements has been determined. The results indicate that the total required transmit power can be reduced by a lower mobile speed or more BS antennas. As a result, the maximum packet length can be extended in virtue of the power reduction. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

It is well known that orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is sensitive to carrier frequency offset (CFO) and suffers from a high peak‐to‐average ratio. In addition, the performance of OFDM is severely affected by strong co‐channel interference and strong narrowband interference. To mitigate the limitations of OFDM, we propose a new multi‐carrier transceiver based on frequency‐shift filter. A frequency‐shift filter can separate spectrally overlapping sub‐carrier signals by exploiting the spectral correlation inherent in the cyclostationary modulated signals. To increase spectral efficiency, we increase the percentage of spectral overlap between two adjacent sub‐channels. We derive an upper bound and a lower bound on the bit error rate performance of the proposed multi‐carrier transceiver in additive white Gaussian noise channel and frequency‐nonselective Rayleigh fading channel, respectively. Compared with OFDM, our simulation results show that the proposed multi‐carrier transceiver is much less sensitive to CFO and has a lower peak‐to‐average ratio; moreover, without any additional interference suppression technique, the proposed transceiver has the advantage of being able to mitigate strong co‐channel interference with CFO from the intended multi‐carrier signal and mitigate strong narrowband interference in additive white Gaussian noise channel and in Rayleigh fading channel in which a large CFO between the transmitted signal and the received signal often occurs. In this paper, the outage probability of maximum ratio combining (MRC) in the spherically invariant fading environment was analyzed. The study was done with and without consideration of the effect of noise. First, the probability density functions (pdf) of signal‐to‐interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and signal‐to‐interference ratio (SIR) were derived. In our derivation, the characteristic pdfs of spherically invariant random process (SIRP) corresponding to the interferences were assumed to be both different and identical. Moreover, both equal and different mean powers of interferences were considered. With the derived pdfs of SINR and SIR, the expressions of outage probability were computed. Numerical analysis was done using three numerical methods known as Gauss–Laguerre, Gauss–Hermite, and Gauss–Legendre integrations. It should be noted that SIRP, the generalization of Gaussian random process, is assumed to have K‐distribution, which is the generalization of Rayleigh. Our analysis was verified by comparing the outage probabilities of the considered environments with those of Rayleigh fading channel. From the numerical results, the derived outage probability converges to that of Rayleigh fading, when the shape parameter of characteristic pdf approaches infinity. Separating highly correlated users can reduce the loss caused by spatial correlation (SC) in multiuser multiple‐input multiple‐output (MU‐MIMO) systems. However, few accurate analyses of the loss caused by SC have been conducted. In this study, we define signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio (SINR) loss to characterize it in multiuser multiple‐input single‐output (MU‐MISO) systems, and use coefficient of correlation (CoC) to describe the SC between users. A formula is deduced to show the accurate relation between SINR loss and CoC. Based on this relation, we propose a user selection method that utilizes CoC to minimize the average SINR loss of users in massive MU‐MISO systems. Simulation results verify the correctness of the relation and show that the proposed user selection method is very effective at reducing the loss caused by SC in massive MU‐MISO systems.  相似文献

Hybrid diversity systems have been of great importance because they provide better diversity orders and robustness to the fading effects of wireless communication systems. This paper focuses on the performance analysis of multiple‐input gle‐output systems that employ combined transmit antenna selection (TAS)/maximal‐ratio transmission (MRT) techniques (i.e., hybrid TAS/MRT). The probability density function, the moment generating function and the n th order moments of the output signal‐to‐noise ratio of the investigated diversity scheme are derived for independent identically distributed flat Nakagami‐m fading channels. The system capacity of the hybrid TAS/MRT scheme is examined from the outage probability perspective. Exact bit/symbol error rate (BER/SER) expressions for binary frequency shift keying, M‐ary phase shift keying and square M‐ary quadrature amplitude modulation signals are derived by using the moment generating function‐based analysis method. By deriving the upper bounds for BER/SER expressions, it is also shown that the investigated systems achieve full diversity orders at high signal‐to‐noise ratios. Also, by Monte Carlo simulations, analytical performance results are validated and the effect of feedback delay, channel estimation error and feedback quantization error on BER/SER performances are examined. Quadrature space shift keying (QSSK) modulation combined with cooperative relaying improves the reliability in communication and enhances the overall spectral efficiency. Here, QSSK scheme is analyzed for multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) wireless communication system with dual‐hop amplify‐and‐forward (AF) relaying systems over asymmetric mixed Rayleigh/Rician and symmetric Nakagami‐m/Nakagami‐m fading channels. Analytical expressions for cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end‐to‐end signal‐to‐noise ratio are derived and used to evaluate the average bit error probability (ABEP) of QSSK modulation in mixed asymmetric and symmetric fading channels. The obtained ABEP expression is in the form of Whittaker function, which can be numerically evaluated using its numerical or series representation. Numerical and simulation results are presented to illustrate the impact of fading parameters on the system performance.  相似文献

This paper presents analytical results on the capacity of multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) fading channels in the presence of co‐channel interference (CCI). We consider the scenario in which the desired and CCI users are all subject to Rayleigh fading. We assume that channel realizations of both the desired and CCI users are known at the receiver. Moreover, we consider the case where the transmitter does not have any CSI and as such equal‐power allocation among transmit antennas is used. Given this setup, we derive the moment generating function (MGF) and the mean of the mutual information (MI). We then study the complementary cumulative distribution function of the MI using a Gaussian approximation. Finally, we present and discuss numerical examples to illustrate the mathematical formalism and to show the effect of various parameters on the capacity of MIMO channels in the presence of CCI. This work considers a simple bit level combining technique, aided by robust bit reliability information, for uplink collaborating multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) base‐stations (also known as macrodiversity MIMO), operating over composite Rayleigh‐lognormal fading channels. Bit reliability weights based on a robust modification of the logarithmic likelihood ratio, combined with instantaneous symbol signal‐to‐noise ratio information, are derived for different local MIMO detection schemes. This bit reliability information is used at the fusion center, together with locally detected data, for combining and producing final information bits delivered to the destination. Computer simulation results confirm that such bit level combining techniques, when used with minimum mean squared error ordered successive interference cancelation and also with sphere decoding maximum likelihood local detectors, provide significant performance improvements over non‐collaborative base‐stations systems. Performance gains are maintained even when these schemes suffer from channel estimation errors and also in the presence of space correlation. Low backhaul overhead and performance advantages make these bit level combining techniques attractive for applications in next generation cellular systems employing coordinated multi‐point (CoMP) technology, as well as for other collaborative MIMO communication schemes.Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We consider a two‐hop multiple‐relay network implemented with opportunistic decode‐and‐forward cooperative strategy, where the first hop and second hop links experience different fading (Rayleigh and Rician). We derive the exact expressions of end‐to‐end outage probability and analyze the approximate results in high signal‐to‐noise ratio region. The analysis shows that the same diversity order can be achieved even in different mixed fading environments. Simulation results are provided to verify our analysis.  相似文献

In this work, we investigate the performance of a dual‐hop cooperative network over α?μ fading channels with the presence of co‐channel interference (CCI) at both the relay and destination nodes. Amplify‐and‐forward (AF) relaying is considered in the relay node. The upper bound of the signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio (SINR) of the dual‐hop relay link is used to determine the system performance. The probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the upper bound of the SINR are analyzed. The system performance is determined in terms of the outage and error probabilities. Numerical results are used to present the performance analysis of the system.  相似文献

Multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) transmission techniques constitute an important technology in modern wireless communication. Hence, performance analysis methods for such systems are of considerable interest. This paper considers first the average pairwise error probability for uncoded MIMO systems employing maximum likelihood detection over a composite Rayleigh‐Lognormal fading channel with spatial correlation. It provides general results, applicable also to a wider class of shadowing models, concerning asymptotical diversity gains and shows that they are not changed by such shadowing. Then, analytical evaluation techniques for bit‐error‐rate (BER) over composite Rayleigh‐Lognormal fading channels, based on the truncated union bound and the transfer function, are considered. Furthermore, these techniques are modified for applications over spatially correlated channels. This paper shows that such performance evaluation techniques provide good approximations to BER of spatially uncorrelated MIMO systems and also in the presence of moderate spatial correlation, over Rayleigh‐Lognormal fading channels. Since the publication of Alamouti's famous space‐time block code, various quasi‐orthogonal space‐time block codes (QSTBC) for multi‐input multi‐output (MIMO) fading channels for more than two transmit antennas have been proposed. It has been shown that these codes cannot achieve full diversity at full rate. In this paper, we present a simple feedback scheme for rich scattering (flat Rayleigh fading) MIMO channels that improves the coding gain and diversity of a QSTBC for 2n (n = 3, 4,…) transmit antennas. The relevant channel state information is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter quantized to one or two bits per code block. In this way, signal transmission with an improved coding gain and diversity near to the maximum diversity order is achieved. Such high diversity can be exploited with either a maximum‐likelihood receiver or low‐complexity zero‐forcing receiver.

In this paper, we present a finite‐signal‐to‐noise ratio (finite‐SNR) framework to establish tight bounds on the diversity‐multiplexing tradeoff of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. We focus on a more realistic propagation environment where MIMO channel fading coefficients are correlated and where SNR values are finite. The impact of spatial correlation on the fundamental diversity‐multiplexing tradeoff is investigated. We present tight lower bounds on the outage probability of both spatially uncorrelated and correlated MIMO channels. Using these lower bounds, accurate finite‐SNR estimates of the diversity‐multiplexing tradeoff are derived. These estimates allow to gain insight on the impact of spatial correlation on the diversity‐multiplexing tradeoff at finite‐SNR. As expected, the diversity‐multiplexing tradeoff is severely degraded as the spatial correlation increases. For example, a MIMO system operating at a spectral efficiency of R bps/Hz and at an SNR of 5 dB in a moderately correlated channel, achieves a better diversity gain than a system operating at the same spectral efficiency and at an SNR of 10 dB in a highly correlated channel, when the multiplexing gain r is greater than 0.8. Another interesting point is that provided that the spatial correlation channel matrix is of full rank, the maximum diversity gain is not affected by the spatial correlation. Motivated by the difficulty in measuring channel state information between heterogeneous primary and secondary systems, we propose a signal‐to‐interference‐noise ratio (SINR)‐based spectrum sharing policy. In the proposed spectrum sharing policy, a secondary user who does not cause SINR outage at the primary receiver is admitted to share the primary user's spectrum. In this article, we analyze the achievable rate of a secondary user and for whom the achievable rate is maximized in the SINR‐constrained spectrum sharing. The maximized achievable rate is determined by the ratio of the distance between the secondary transmitter and the primary receiver to the distance between the secondary transmitter and receiver, and it is proportional to the distance ratio. In conclusion, secondary links with large distance ratio can support high data rate applications so long as SINR constraint of the primary user is guaranteed. In this paper, we propose a novel low‐complexity transmission power adaptation with good bit error rate (BER) performance for multicarrier code‐division multiple‐access (MC‐CDMA) systems over Nakagami‐m fading channels. We first propose a new receiver called ath‐order‐maximal‐ratio‐combining (a‐MRC) receiver with which the receiver power gain for the nth subcarrier is the ath (a?1) power of the corresponding channel gain. Incorporating the a‐MRC receiver, we then propose a new transmission power adaptation scheme where the transmission power is allocated over all the N subcarriers according to the subchannel gains and the transmitter adapts its power to maintain a constant signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise (SINR) at the receiver. The proposed scheme has a significant performance gain over the nonadaptive transmission scheme over both independent and correlated fading channels. Moreover, the proposed scheme keeps good BER performance while it is much simpler than the previous power control/adaptation schemes. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
