In an earlier article the authors related visually‐ scaled large colour differences to ΔE* values calculated using four colour‐difference formulae. All four metrics yielded linear regressions from plots of visual colour difference against ΔE*, and ΔE gave the best linear fit, but the correlations were rather low. In an effort to clarify matters, the previous investigation is expanded to include data not hitherto examined. The link between visual colour difference and ΔE* colour metrics is further explored in terms of a power law relationship over a wide range of lightness, hue, and chroma variations within CIELAB colour space. It is shown that power‐law fits are superior to linear regressions in all cases, although correlations over large regions of the colour space are not very high. Partitioning of the experimental results to give reduced data sets in smaller regions is shown to improve correlations markedly, using power‐law fits. Poly(N‐acryloyl dopamine) (PAD) was successfully synthesized through free‐radical homopolymerization of N‐acryloyl‐O,O′‐diphenylmethyldopamine and subsequent deprotection. The adhesive ability of PAD to wood was studied in detail. PAD underwent substantial oxidation and crosslinking reactions at about 80°C. Therefore, maple veneer samples bonded with PAD powder at a press temperature of 120°C had high shear strength and high water resistance. In contrast to conventional wood adhesives such as phenol‐formaldehyde and urea‐formaldehyde resins, PAD resulted in an increase, rather than a decrease, in the shear strengths of two‐ply laminated maple veneer test specimens that had undergone a water soaking and drying treatment. A mixture of PAD and polyethylenimine (PEI) resulted in much higher shear strength than PAD alone. To achieve high shear strength and high water resistance, the maple specimens bonded with PAD–PEI mixtures had to be cured above 150°C because reactions between PAD and PEI occurred at about 150°C. The water resistance of the maple specimens bonded with the PAD–PEI mixtures was dependent on the PAD:PEI weight ratio and the curing temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The work reported demonstrates that the yellowness of UV‐curable epoxide resins can be improved by adding certain tertiary amines in appropriately determined amounts. According to the results of our experiments, 2.0 wt% benzoyl peroxide added to a resin effectively enhances the crosslinking density, and phenolic free radicals are produced during UV curing, which consequently induce yellowness via the reaction of oxygen and the free radicals. Imidazole (1‐amine) and tertiary amines, including 1,2‐dimethylimidazole (2‐amine), 2,4,6‐tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (3‐amine), 1‐methylimidazole (4‐amine) and 2‐methylimidazole (5‐amine), were chosen to be added to resins, and their effects on UV conversion and yellowness were investigated. According to the experimental results, tertiary amines in the resin can provide a certain degree of improvement in yellowness index (ΔYI) and color parameter (ΔE*ab) of the resin sample. Whatever the type of tertiary amine, it is found that the optimum content of amine in resin is 1.0 wt%. Also, among the studied amines, the 3‐amine exhibits the highest UV reactivity and the best efficiency for yellowness improvement with values of Δa*, Δb*, ΔYI and ΔE*ab as low as ? 1.4, 6.23, 11.27 and 6.48, respectively. This study investigated the differences between different large colour‐difference (LCD) data sets (with a mean ΔE value about 10). Six data sets were studied. For each data set, various CIELAB based colour difference models were derived to fit the data. These models were compared to shed light on the difference between the different data sets. It was found that all data sets have very similar characteristics except for the Munsell data. Detailed investigation showed that the discrepancy is mainly due to the balance between the lightness and chromatic differences used previously for the Munsell data set. It was found that one unit of Munsell Value appears to be three times as large colour difference as one unit of Munsell Chroma at least under the experimental conditions for the data sets studied here. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time, the use of ionic liquids as additives for printing inks in order to improve the wettability of the printing base by the ink is presented. The aim of this work was to study the influence of ionic liquids on the selected properties of water‐based printing ink and the prints. The contact angles of the printing inks on the printing base were measured. Modified flexographic inks were laboratory printed on polypropylene plastic film. The impact of small amounts of various ionic liquids on printing ink colour was examined in terms of the optical density of the full‐tone area, the colour parameters (L*, a*, b*, CIE), the total colour difference, and the gloss of the dried ink film. The influence of ionic liquids on the ink contact angle, the optical density, and the L*a*b* coordinates is discussed. In general, the investigated ionic liquids improve the wettability of water‐based flexographic printing ink, with an acceptable total colour difference. The optical density is increased for printing inks containing ionic liquids in comparison with the original flexographic printing ink, Process.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of toothbrushing and paste repolishing on the colour restitution of long-term coffee discoloured prefabricated and direct resin composites. One prefabricated (Componeer-Coltène) and three direct resin composites (Brilliant Ever Glow-Coltène, Essentia-GC, Harmonize-Kerr) were tested. Componeer samples were prepared with and without polishing while the other groups were all polished. After baseline colour-measurement, the specimens were immersed in coffee for 3-month and colour-measurement was repeated, then a simulation of 1-year of toothbrushing (Toothbrush Simulation ZM-3.4-SD Mechatronics) with Pro-Expert Professional Protection-Ipana, 3D White Luxe Perfection-Ipana, and White Ruscello-GC toothpaste was performed. Colour-changes (ΔE) after toothbrushing and repolishing with polishing paste (Enamelize, Cosmodent) were calculated. The discolouration occurred after prolonged exposure to a coffee solution was above the clinically acceptable level of ΔE = 2 in all groups, except Componeer polished group. The lowest discoloured group was Componeer polished (ΔE = 1.66 ± 0.32) while the highest was Essentia group (ΔE = 4.30 ± 0.48). The samples toothbrushed with White Ruscello exhibited the greatest colour restitution (ΔE = 2.06 ± 0.75) (P < .05). After paste repolishing, slight colour restitution was observed among all the groups, but the differences between them remained the same as after the toothbrushing procedure. Prolonged exposure to coffee solution affects the colour of the resin composites and noninvasive methods can provide colour restitution below the critical value for visual perception (ΔE = 3.3). Noninvasive procedures such as toothbrushing with a whitening toothpaste or repolishing with a polishing paste may ensure the colour restitution of direct resin composite restorations until a clinically acceptable level.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to investigate the use of crosslinked poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PVP) to coat polyester/cotton knitted fabric, without adversely affecting its dyeing properties. Before dyeing, the knitted fabrics were tested for bursting strength to assess the influence of the coating on their resistance. The dyeing parameters were evaluated as the exhaustion (%), K/S value, colour difference (ΔE), relative strength (RS %) and colour fastness to washing. Bursting strengths were 9.4 for coated and 9.7 kgf cm?2 for uncoated knitted fabric samples, confirming an insignificant loss in resistance. In the evaluation of K/S, ΔE and RS%, the values for the samples with the highest concentration of PVP were the most different to those for the standard sample. The colour fastness showed satisfactory results indicating that neutralisation and washing after dyeing were effective. These results could lead to increased quality in the textile industry, adding value to products.  相似文献

In this research, the three‐dimensional structural and colorimetric modeling of three‐dimensional woven fabrics was conducted for accurate color predictions. One‐hundred forty single‐ and double‐layered woven samples in a wide range of colors were produced. With the consideration of their three‐dimensional structural parameters, three‐dimensional color prediction models, K/S‐, R‐, and L*a*b*‐based models, were developed through the optimization of previous two‐dimensional models which have been reported to be the three most accurate models for single‐layered woven structures. The accuracy of the new three‐dimensional models was evaluated by calculating the color differences ΔL*, ΔC*, Δh°, and ΔECMC(2:1) between the measured and the predicted colors of the samples, and then the error values were compared to those of the two‐dimensional models. As a result, there has been an overall improvement in color predictions of all models with a decrease in ΔECMC(2:1) from 10.30 to 5.25 units on average after the three‐dimensional modeling.  相似文献

Although the colour of different meat products has been studied, particularly in the final product , these studies do not separate the influence of degree of mincing from other factors such as additives, spices, manufacturing process, etc. The effect of degree of mincing on colour (CIELAB colour space) in pork meat was studied. Three mincing processes were studied, two using a grinder with 10 and 20 mm diameter holes in the plate, and a third in which a cutter was used to obtain a finely minced product. As control, intact meat was used. Colour parameters [lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), chroma (C*), hue (H*), a*/b* ratio, and colour differences], pH, and water holding capacity were determined. Mincing, regardless of the type used, increased the values of L*, b*, and H*, but decreased the values of a* and a*/b* ratio. The L* values increased with mincing degree. The H* values and a*/b* ratio of plate minced meats (10 and 20 mm) differed from that which had been finely minced. The mincing process did not modify the saturation values of the batters. High dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut imagery has an established video ecosystem, spanning image capture to encoding and display. This drives the need for evaluating how image quality is affected by the multitudes of ecosystem parameters. The simplest quality metrics evaluate color differences on a pixel‐by‐pixel basis. In this article, we evaluate a series of these color difference metrics on four HDR and three standard dynamic range publicly available distortion databases consisting of natural images and subjective scores. We compare the performance of the well‐established CIE L*a*b* metrics (ΔE00 , ΔE94 ) alongside two HDR‐specific metrics (ΔEZ [Jzazbz], ΔEITP [ICTCP]) and a spatial CIE L*a*b* extension (). We also present a novel spatial extension to ΔEITP derived by optimizing the opponent color contrast sensitivity functions. We observe that this advanced metric, , outperforms the other color difference metrics, and we quantify the improved performance with the steps of metric advancement.  相似文献

The sizes for the perceptible or acceptable color difference measured with instruments vary by factors such as instrument, material, and color‐difference formula. To compensate for disagreement of the CIELAB color difference (ΔE*ab) with the human observer, the CIEDE2000 formula was developed. However, since this formula has no uniform color space (UCS), DIN99 UCS may be an alternative UCS at present. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the CIELAB UCS and DIN99 UCS using dental resin composites. Changes and correlations in color coordinates (CIE L*,a*, and b* versus L99, a99, and b99 from DIN99) and color differences (ΔE*ab and ΔE99) of dental resin composites after polymerization and thermocycling were determined. After transformation into DIN99 formula, the a value (red–green parameter) shifted to higher values, and the span of distribution was maintained after transformation. However, the span of distribution of b values (yellow–blue parameter) was reduced. Although color differences with the two formulas were correlated after polymerization and thermocycling (r = 0.77 and 0.68, respectively), the color coordinates and color differences with DIN99 were significantly different from those with CIELAB. New UCS (DIN99) was different from the present CIELAB UCS with respect to color coordinates (a and b) and color difference. Adaptation of a more observer‐response relevant uniform color space should be considered after visual confirmation with dental esthetic materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Most of the colour‐difference formulae were developed to fit data sets having a limited range of colour‐difference magnitudes. Hence, their performances are uncertain when applying them to a range of colour differences from very small to very large colour differences. This article describes an experiment including three parts according to the colour‐difference magnitudes: large colour difference (LCD), small colour difference (SCD), and threshold colour difference (TCD) corresponding to mean ΔE values of 50.3, 3.5, and 0.6, respectively. Three visual assessment techniques were used: ratio judgement, pair comparison, and threshold for LCD, SCD, and TCD experiments, respectively. Three data sets were used to test six colour‐difference formulae and uniform colour spaces (CIELAB, CIE94, CIEDE2000, CAM02‐SCD, CAM02‐UCS, and CAM02‐LCD). The results showed that all formulae predicted visual results with great accuracy except CIELAB. CIEDE2000 worked effectively for the full range of colour differences, i.e., it performed the best for the TCD and SCD data and reasonably well for the LCD data. Several colour‐difference formulas such as CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000 have been developed by modifying CIELAB. These formulas give much better fits for experimental data based on small colour differences than does CIELAB. None of these has an associated uniform colour space (UCS). The need for a UCS is demonstrated by the widespread use of the a*b* diagram despite the lack of uniformity. This article describes the development of formulas, with the same basic structure as the DIN99 formula, that predict the experimental data sets better than do the CMC and CIE94 colour‐difference formulas and only slightly worse than CIEDE2000 (which was optimized on the experimental data). However, these formulas all have an associated UCS. The spaces are similar in form to L*a*b*. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To apply the coloring method using light irradiation and thermal treatment to print photographs on wood, the effect of the transmittance of negative films was investigated. ΔE* decreased with light irradiation when specimens covered with films with transmittances exceeding 20% were irradiated for 100 h. It was thought that this phenomenon was due to the decrease in Δb*. The color of light‐irradiated wood changed remarkably with thermal treatment; however, the change in the color of exposed specimens covered with films with transmittances exceeding roughly 20% became constant. Clear photographs could be printed on wood using negative films with transmittances less than approximately 20%. Furthermore, the difference between the maximum and minimum values of ΔE* after thermal treatment was about 22. Humans can distinguish four to seven colors that can be created by this method. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study was to determine selected surface properties of varnished beech wood impregnated with natural extracts after exposure to accelerated weathering. Beech wood samples were impregnated with aqueous solutions of 5 and 10% mimosa (Acacia mollissima) and quebracho (Shinopsis lorentzii) tannins. After weathering, colour changes (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, and ΔE*) in addition to scratch resistance and surface hardness values were calculated and evaluated. As a result of the weathering process, greater colour changes (ΔE*) were detected in the beech wood samples impregnated with tannins compared with the unimpregnated control samples. The least colour change occurred in the Tanalith-E-impregnated samples. Total colour change was adversely affected with tannin impregnation after the weathering processes. In terms of surface hardness and scratch resistance, the highest values were observed in the mimosa-solution-impregnated and control samples. Furthermore, it was found that scratch resistance and hardness values tended to increase during the first period of weathering and decreased thereafter. Regarding surface properties, the best results were obtained when polyurethane varnish was employed compared with the other varnish types.  相似文献

The low‐temperature ultraviolet (UV) irradiation equipment, developed in our Lab, was used to study the photo‐aging of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) films at low temperature. The color change kinetics and corresponding structure development of PVC film during low‐temperature UV aging were studied through L*a*b* coordinates Commission International d' Eclau‐age (CIE 1976 color space) and Ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV–vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that the yellowness difference (?b*) and color difference (?E*) of the PVC film increased almost linearly with the aging time. Their values had a slower change at lower temperature. The kinetic study showed that the relationship between the velocity of coloration of the PVC film and the temperature agreed well with Arrhenius equation at low temperature. The activation energy of coloration of the PVC film was calculated. The FTIR spectra indicated that photo‐dehydrochloration, resulting in the generation of conjugated carbon–carbon double bonds, was the main reaction for PVC during photo‐aging at low temperature. Meanwhile, the photo‐oxidation was also obvious and could not be neglected. It clearly confirmed that the absorption peaks of conjugated carbon–carbon double bond increased and shifted to longer wavelength during photo‐aging in the UV‐abs analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The colour resolution of a 14‐bit and an 8‐bit per channel graphics card were evaluated and compared with the just noticeable difference between colours (varying only in luminance) for: (1) a standard observer (based on the CIE 1976 L*u*v* colour space) and (2) real observers in a colour discrimination task. The results of this study show that an 8‐bit per channel graphics card seems adequate for colour discrimination experiments where stimuli only vary in luminance. However, considering that the resolution of the graphics card should be equal to the Nyquist rate, an 8‐bit per channel card turns out to be inadequate. For colour discrimination experiments where stimuli only vary in chromaticity, there is an undersampling of the colour space with respect to MacAdam ellipses when using 8‐bit per channel graphics cards. The extremely fine colour resolution of a 14‐bit per channel graphics card overcomes these problems. Its use allows more accurate measurements of achromatic and chromatic discrimination thresholds and avoids experimental (spatial or luminance) artefacts, such as bandings that can occur on achromatic or chromatic gradients. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Establishing a colorimetric guideline to predict the effectiveness of tooth bleaching could produce a more reliable dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of tooth bleaching and to test the predictability of tooth color changes. A 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching system was used in studies at Harvard University and at Iwate Medical University in Japan. L*, a*, and b* values (CIELAB) for pre‐ and postbleaching were obtained and color differences (ΔE) were calculated. The b* and L* values of the original tooth color indicated a relatively strong to moderate correlation with ΔE values, whereas a* showed a weak correlation. The multiple‐regression equation obtained from the color data of Harvard subjects performed better than the predictive model. The predicted ΔE correlated strongly with the observed ΔE (r = 0.78). The validation of this equation on data collected from Iwate confirmed the strong correlation (r = 0.74). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the crispening effect was clearly observed when 38 neutral‐coloured sample pairs with only lightness differences were assessed under 5 neutral backgrounds of different lightness values. The sample pairs are CRT‐based colours, and they are selected along the CIELAB L* axis from 0 to 100. The magnitude of colour difference of each pair is 5.0 CIELAB units. The visual assessment results showed that there is a very large crispening effect. The colour differences of the same pair assessed under different backgrounds could differ by a factor of up to 8 for a sample pair with low lightness. The perceived colour difference was enlarged when the lightness of a sample pair was similar to that of the background. The extent of crispening effect and its quantification are discussed in this investigation. 1,3,3‐Trimethylspiroindoline‐2,3′‐3H‐naphth[2,1‐b][1,4]oxazine ( 1a ) and 6′‐piperidino‐1,3,3‐trimethylspiroindoline‐2,3′‐3H‐naphth[2,1‐b][1,4]oxazine ( 1b ) were applied as disperse dyes to polyester, nylon and acrylic fabrics. Under optimised dyeing conditions, photochromic fabrics were produced which, on irradiation with ultraviolet or exposure to sunlight, turned blue ( 1a) or blueish‐purple ( 1b ). Dye 1a showed enhanced photochromic colour change performance compared with dye 1b . The photochromic colour build was highest on nylon and lowest on acrylic fabric. The colour change properties and the technical performance (wash fastness and photostability) of the photochromic fabrics were evaluated using specifically adapted colour measurement methods. The data were analysed in terms of variation of lightness, a*, b*, chroma, hue angle and ΔE, colour difference before and after exposure, and K/S curves as a function of irradiation time. The fabrics generally showed good wash fastness. Although the colour build‐up decreased with exposure to the Xenotest fadeometer, some residual photochromism remained after prolonged exposure.  相似文献
