A Brabender torque rheometer equipped with an internal mixer was used to study the influence of compounding method on the properties of (rigid PVC)/(treated and untreated nano‐CaCO3) nanocomposites. Two different methods were studied for the addition of surface treated and untreated nano‐CaCO3 during the melt mixing of rigid PVC. Direct dry mixing of rigid PVC and nano‐CaCO3, and addition of nano‐CaCO3 at the onset of PVC fusion were investigated. Dispersion of treated and untreated nano‐CaCO3 was studied by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that using direct dry mixing improved the dispersion of nano‐CaCO3 in the PVC matrix by lowering the fusion time. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposite samples such as impact strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break were improved by using this method. The addition of treated nano‐CaCO3 at the onset of fusion caused a simultaneous decrease in torque. Also, rigid PVC nanocomposites prepared with treated nano‐CaCO3 showed better mechanical properties than those of nanocomposites prepared with the untreated nano‐CaCO3. J. VINYL ADDIT. To improve the impact toughness of polypropylene (PP), nano‐CaCO3 was prepared by an in situ synthesis. The surface of the nano‐CaCO3 was modified by KH‐550 silane coupling agent and NDZ‐401 titanium acid ester coupling agent. Nano‐CaCO3/PP composite materials were fabricated through a melt‐blending method and characterized, and their mechanical properties were analyzed. The impact toughness and the tensile strength of the PP were improved significantly by the incorporation of nano‐CaCO3. When the weight fraction of nano‐CaCO3 was 2%, the maximum impact toughness and tensile strength of the PP nanocomposites were 293% and 259%, respectively, of the values for neat PP. Observation of the impact fracture surface of the nanocomposites indicated that the dispersion of nano‐CaCO3 modified by NDZ‐401 coupling agent was more homogeneous than that of nano‐CaCO3 modified by the KH‐550 silane coupling agent. Nano‐CaCO3/polypropylene (PP) composites modified with polypropylene grafted with acrylic acid (PP‐g‐AA) or acrylic acid with and without dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were prepared by a twin‐screw extruder. The crystallization and melting behavior of PP in the composites were investigated by DSC. The experimental results showed that the crystallization temperature of PP in the composites increased with increasing nano‐CaCO3 content. Addition of PP‐g‐AA further increased the crystallization temperatures of PP in the composites. It is suggested that PP‐g‐AA could improve the nucleation effect of nano‐CaCO3. However, the improvement in the nucleation effect of nano‐CaCO3 would be saturated when the PP‐g‐AA content of 5 phf (parts per hundred based on weight of filler) was used. The increase in the crystallization temperature of PP was observed by adding AA into the composites and the crystallization temperature of the composites increased with increasing AA content. It is suggested that the AA reacted with nano‐CaCO3 and the formation of Ca(AA)2 promoted the nucleation of PP. In the presence of DCP, the increment of the AA content had no significant influence on the crystallization temperature of PP in the composites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUD: Melt vibration technology was used to prepare injection samples of polypropylene (PP)/nano‐CaCO3 blends. It is well known that nano‐CaCO3 particles are easy to agglomerate owing to their large surface energy. Improving the distribution of nano‐CaCO3 particles in PP/nano‐CaCO3 blends is very important for enhancing the mechanical properties. In this work, low‐frequency vibration was imposed on the process of injection molding of PP/nano‐CaCO3 blends. The aim of importing a vibration field was to change the crystal structure of PP as we studied previously and improve the distribution of nano‐CaCO3 particles. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were improved. RESULTS: Through melt vibration, the mechanical properties of PP/nano‐CaCO3 samples were improved significantly. Compared with conventional injection molding, the enhancement of the tensile strength and impact strength of the samples molded by vibration injection molding was 17.68 and 175.96%, respectively. According to scanning electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements, it was found that a much better dispersion of nano‐CaCO3 in samples was achieved by vibration injection molding. Moreover, the crystal structure of PP in PP/CaCO3 vibration samples changed. The γ crystal form was achieved at the shear layer of vibration samples. Moreover, the degree of crystallinity of PP in vibration samples increased 6% compared with conventional samples. CONCLUSION: Concerning the microstructure, melt vibration could effectively change the crystal structure and increase the degree of crystallinity of PP besides improving the distribution of nano‐CaCO3 particles. Concerning the macrostructure, melt vibration could enhance the mechanical properties. The improvement of mechanical properties of PP/nano‐CaCO3 blends prepared by low‐frequency vibration injection molding should be attributed to the even distribution of nano‐CaCO3 particles and the formation of γ‐PP and the increase of the degree of cystallinity. Nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) was used in this article to fill acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which is often used in rapid heat cycle molding process (RHCM). To achieve better adhesion between nano‐CaCO3 and ABS/PMMA, nano‐CaCO3 particles were modified by using titanate coupling agent, aluminum–titanium compound coupling agent, and stearic acid. Dry and solution methods were both utilized in the surface modification process. ABS/PMMA/nano‐CaCO3 composites were prepared in a corotating twin screw extruder. Influence of surface modifiers and surface modification methods on mechanical and flow properties of composites was analyzed. The results showed that collaborative use of aluminum–titanium compound coupling agent and stearic acid for nano‐CaCO3 surface modification is optimal in ABS/PMMA/nano‐CaCO3 composites. Coupling agent can increase the melt flow index (MFI) and tensile yield strength of ABS/PMMA/nano‐CaCO3 composites. The Izod impact strength of composites increases with the addition of titanate coupling agent up to 1 wt %, thereafter the Izod impact strength shows a decrease. The interfacial adhesion between nano‐CaCO3 and ABS/PMMA is stronger by using solution method. But the dispersion uniformity of nano‐CaCO3 modified by solution method is worse. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

In this article, dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM) technology was used to prepare injection samples of Polypropylene‐Calcium Carbonate (PP/CaCO3) nanocomposites. Through DPIM, the mechanical properties of PP/nano‐CaCO3 samples were improved significantly. Compared with conventional injection molding (CIM), the enhancement of the tensile strength and impact strength of the samples molded by DPIM was 39 and 144%, respectively. In addition, the tensile strength and impact strength of the PP/nano‐CaCO3 composites molded by DPIM increase by 21 and 514%, respectively compared with those of pure PP through CIM. According to the SEM, WAXD, DSC measurement, it could be found that a much better dispersion of nano‐CaCO3 in samples was achieved by DPIM. Moreover, γcrystal is found in the shear layer of the DPIM samples. The crystallinity of PP matrix in DPIM sample increases by 22.76% compared with that of conventional sample. The improvement of mechanical properties of PP/nano‐CaCO3 composites prepared by DPIM attributes to the even distribution of nano‐CaCO3 particles and the morphology change of PP matrix under the influence of dynamic shear stress. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As part of broader effort to synthesize a new class of water-based composite, hybrid emulsion polymerization was carried out with acrylic monomers [methyl methacrylate (MMA), n-butyl acrylate (BA)]. Nanocomposite of P(MMA–BA)/nano CaCO3 was synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerization. Water-based alkyd coating with various proportions nano CaCO3, P(MMA–BA) and its nanocomposite was formulated. Extent of polymerization with and without nano CaCO3 was measured using gravimetric method. Thermal properties of neat polymer, nanocomposite and coating films were evaluated by TGA and DSC, DTA analysis. Uniform dispersion of nano CaCO3 in polymer matrix was ensured from SEM/TEM images. Incorporation of nanoparticles to hybrid polymer and nanocomposite to alkyd emulsion showed significant enhancement in mechanical and thermal properties. Dual role of nanocomposite in coating; as a partial binder and a filler to improve property profile of neat coating has been reported.  相似文献

The influence of the compounding route of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM)/nano‐CaCO3 composites on their properties, including their mechanical properties, the dispersion degree of nano‐CaCO3, and the morphology of EPDM, was studied. The results showed that the toughness of the composites and the morphology of the EPDM particles were markedly influenced by the compounding route, whereas the dispersion degree of nano‐CaCO3 in the matrix was little influenced by the compounding route. The impact strength of composites prepared by one route was about 60 kJ/m2 with 20 wt % nano‐CaCO3. The results indicated that a sandbag of nano‐CaCO3 embedded in EPDM could effectively improve the toughness of the composites. A sandbag composed of EPDM and nano‐CaCO3 eliminated the deterioration effect of the nano‐CaCO3 agglomerate on the toughness of the composites, whereas the nano‐CaCO3 agglomerate separately dispersed in PP decreased the toughness of the tercomponent composite © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nano‐CaCO3/homo‐PP composites were prepared by melt‐blending using twin‐screw extruder. The results show that not only the impact property but also the bending modulus of the system have been evidently increased by adding nano‐CaCO3. The nano‐CaCO3 particles have been dispersed in the matrix in the nanometer scale which was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The toughening mechanism of nano‐CaCO3, investigated by means of dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), lies on that the nano‐CaCO3 particles take an action of initiating and terminating crazing (silver streak), which can absorb more impact energy than the neat PP. At the same time, the nano‐CaCO3 particles, as the nuclear, decrease the crystal size of PP, the results of which were investigated by means of polarized optical microscope (POM). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To improve the mechanical properties and structure of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/nano‐CaCO3 nano composite, a core (nano‐CaCO3)/shell (SR) structured filler (40–60 nm) was successfully prepared by refluxing methyl vinyl silicone rubber (SR) and nano‐CaCO3 particles (coupling agent KH550, KH560, or NDZ‐101 as interfacial modifier) in toluene with vigorous stirring, according to an encapsulation model. It is effective in rigid PVC composite's toughness and reinforcement. The interfacial modifier's structure and interaction of nanocomposites of PVC/SR/nano‐CaCO3 were studied. The results indicate that KH560 has the optimal interfacial modificatory effect. The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) study testified that PVC/SR/nano‐CaCO3 nanocomposites had a typical rubber–plastics‐toughening mechanism. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A nanosize CaCO3 filler was synthesized by an in situ deposition technique, and its size was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. CaCO3 was prepared in three different sizes (21, 15, and 9 nm). Styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) was filled with 2–10 wt % nano‐CaCO3 with 2% linseed oil as an extender. Nano‐CaCO3–SBR rubber composites were compounded on a two‐roll mill and molded on a compression‐molding machine. Properties such as the specific gravity, swelling index, hardness, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, modulus at 300% elongation, flame retardancy, and elongation at break were measured. Because of the reduction in the nanosize of CaCO3, drastic improvements in the mechanical properties were found. The size of 9 nm showed the highest increase in the tensile strength (3.89 MPa) in comparison with commercial CaCO3 and the two other sizes of nano‐CaCO3 up to an 8 wt % loading in SBR. The elongation at break also increased up to 824% for the 9‐nm size in comparison with commercial CaCO3 and the two other sizes of nano‐CaCO3. Also, these results were compared with nano‐CaCO3‐filled SBR without linseed oil as an extender. The modulus at 300% elongation, hardness, specific gravity, and flame‐retarding properties increased with a reduction in the nanosize with linseed oil as an extender, which helped with the uniform dispersion of nano‐CaCO3 in the rubber matrix. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rubber nanocomposites containing one type of nanofiller are common and are widely established in the research field. In this study, nitrile rubber (NBR) based ternary nanocomposites containing modified silicate (Cloisite 30B) and also nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) were prepared using a laboratory internal mixer (simple melt mixing). Effects of the hybrid filler system (filler phase have two kind of fillers) on the cure rheometry, morphology, swelling, and mechanical and dynamic–mechanical properties of the NBR were investigated. Concentration of nano‐CaCO3 [0, 5, 10, and 15 parts per one hundred parts of rubber by weight (phr)] and organoclay (0, 3, and 6 phr) in NBR was varied. The microstructure and homogeneity of the compounds were confirmed by studying the dispersion of nanoparticles in NBR via X‐ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Based on the results of morphology and mechanical properties, the dual‐filler phase nanocomposites (hybrid nanocomposite) have higher performance in comparison with single‐filler phase nanocomposites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nano‐sized calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3)‐supported nucleating agent for poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) was prepared by supporting calcium phenylphosphonate (PPCa) on nano‐CaCO3 surface. The thermal properties of phenylphosphonic acid (PPOA) and nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agent and its dispersion in PLLA matrix were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the formation of nucleating agent supported on nano‐CaCO3 was attributed to the chemical reaction between nano‐CaCO3 and PPOA. The nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agents were dispersed evenly in the PLLA matrix even with 5 wt% loading. The supported nucleating agent was added to PLLA to examine its nucleating ability for PLLA. The results of the investigation showed that the nano‐CaCO3‐supported nucleating agent exhibited higher nucleation ability compared to PPCa nucleating agent. POLYM. ENG. Nanocomposites of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and nano‐calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles were prepared via melt blending, and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) as an interfacial modifier was also introduced into the nanocomposites through preparing CPE/nano‐CaCO3 master batch. The mechanical properties, morphology, and rheology were studied. A moderate toughening effect was observed for PVC/nano‐CaCO3 binary nanocomposites. The elongation at break and Young's modulus also increased with increasing the nano‐CaCO3 concentration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study demonstrated that the nano‐CaCO3 particles were dispersed in a PVC matrix uniformly, and a few nanoparticles agglomeration was found. The toughening effect of the nano‐CaCO3 particles on PVC could be attributed to the cavitation of the matrix, which consumed tremendous fracture energy. The notched Izod impact strength achieved a significant improvement by incorporating CPE into the nanocomposites, and obtained the high value of 745 J/m. Morphology investigation indicated that the nano‐CaCO3 particles in the PVC matrix was encapsulated with a CPE layer through preparing the CPE/nano‐CaCO3 master batch. The evaluation of rheological properties revealed that the introduction of nano‐CaCO3 particles into PVC resulted in a remarkable increase in the melt viscosity. However, the viscosity decreased with addition of CPE, especially at high shear rates; thus, the processability of the ternary nanocomposites was improved. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nano‐CaCO3/polypropylene (PP) masterbatch containing above 80 wt % nano‐CaCO3 was prepared by nano‐CaCO3 coated PP modified by reactive monomers. The chemical interaction, crystallization and melting behavior, thermal stability, morphology, and surface contact angle of masterbatch were investigated with IR, DSC, TEM, TGA, ESCA, and surface contact angle. The results indicated that nano‐CaCO3 was coated by PP graft copolymers in the masterbatch modified by reactive monomers. The graft ratio and crystallization and melting behavior of PP in the masterbatch depended on the type and content of reactive monomer. The crystallization temperatures of masterbatch modified by reactive monomer is methyl methacrylate > butyl acrylate > methyl acrylate ≈ mixture of acrylic acid and styrene > unmodified ≈ maleic anhydride ≈ acrylic acid > styrene. Modification by reactive monomer increased the thermal stability and surface contact angle of masterbatch. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 3907–3914, 2006  相似文献

Epoxy resin was modified by adding a silane coupling agent/nano‐calcium carbonate master batch. Then, samples of binary carbon fiber/epoxy composites and ternary fiber/nano‐CaCO3/epoxy were prepared by hot press process. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the carbon fiber/epoxy composites was investigated and the results indicate that introduction of the treated nano‐CaCO3 enhances ILSS obviously. In particular, the addition of 4 wt% nano‐CaCO3 leads to 36.6% increase in the ILSS for the composite. The fracture surfaces of the carbon fiber/epoxy composites and the mechanical properties of epoxy resin cast are examined and both of them are employed to explain the change of ILSS. The results show that the change of ILSS is primarily due to an increase of the epoxy matrix strength and an increase of the fiber/epoxy interface. The bifurcation of propagating cracks, stress transfer, and cavitation are deduced for the reasons of strengthening and toughening effect of nano‐CaCO3 particles. POLYM. Encapsulated nanometer calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) was prepared using styrene and maleic anhydride (MAH) copolymer in 2‐propanol or methanol–water mixture in the presence of different initiator systems. The particle morphology and physical properties of the encapsulated nano‐CaCO3 particles, such as the interaction between the encapsulating polymer and the nano‐CaCO3, and the thermal stability of encapsulated nano‐CaCO3 were studied by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Soxhlet extraction experiments, thermogravimetric analysis banded with FTIR (TGA‐FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The encapsulating ratio and the stable encapsulating ratio of encapsulated nano‐CaCO3 were characterized. The results showed that a strong interfacial interaction was obtained due to the formation of a chemical bond or ion‐dipole between the C?O group of MAH and Ca2+ ion of nano‐CaCO3. The encapsulating ratio and stable encapsulating ratio of nano‐CaCO3 initiated by AIBN was higher than that initiated by BPO. Addition of maleic anhydride increased the encapsulating ratio and the stable encapsulating ratio of encapsulated nano‐CaCO3. For the encapsulated nano‐CaCO3 prepared in methanol–water, the diameter of the encapsulated nano‐CaCO3 particle increased from 60–70 nm to about 100 nm and the morphology changed from a cube with a sharp edge to spherical with a rough surface. In this study, a novel mechanochemical route to prepare core‐shell structured particles was introduced. XPS, TEM, and dissolving experimental results indicate the formation of [(inorganic particle)/(elastomer)] core‐shell structured particles, and several kinds of calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) particles with various interfaces were obtained. The mechanical properties and morphological results indicate that the surface treatment of nano‐CaCO3 particles and the existence of outer elastic layer will strengthen the interfacial interaction between nano‐CaCO3 particles and PVC matrix, which results in improvement of mechanical properties of PVC/CaCO3 composites. The theoretical calculations of the interfacial interaction and DMA results confirm these especially when the surface of nano‐CaCO3 particles was treated by MMA and coated in succession by ACR through vibro‐milling. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS)/poly(methyl meth‐acrylate) (PMMA)/nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) composites were prepared in a corotating twin screw extruder. Four kinds of nano‐CaCO3 particles with different diameters and surface treatment were used in this study. The properties of the composites were analyzed by tensile tests, Izod impact tests, melt flow index (MFI) tests, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). This article is focused on the effect of nano‐CaCO3 particles' size and surface treatment on various properties of ABS/PMMA/nano‐CaCO3 composites. The results show that the MFI of all the composites reaches a maximum value when the content of nano‐CaCO3 is 4 wt%. In comparison with untreated nano‐CaCO3 composites, the MFI of stearic acid treated nano‐CaCO3 composites is higher and more sensitive to temperature. The tensile yield strength decreases slightly with the increase of nano‐CaCO3 content. However, the size and surface treatment of nano‐CaCO3 particles have little influence on the tensile yield strength of composites. In contrast, all of nano‐CaCO3 particles decrease Izod impact strength significantly. Stearic acid treated nano‐CaCO3 composites have superior Izod impact strength to untreated nano‐CaCO3 composites with the same nano‐CaCO3 content. Furthermore, the Izod impact strength of 100 nm nano‐CaCO3 composites is higher than that of 25 nm nano‐CaCO3 composites. POLYM.
