Solar cooking is often considered “a solution looking for a problem”. Solar cookers have long been presented as an interesting solution to the world's problem of dwindling fuel wood sources and other environmental problems associated with wood fuel demand for cooking. However, recent GTZ field work in South Africa showed different benefits instead: the use of solar cookers resulted in appreciable fuel and time savings as well as increased energy security for households using commercial fuels. These observations are based on field tests in South Africa that started in 1996 to investigate the social acceptability of solar cookers and to facilitate local production and commercialisation of the technology. Impact studies and use rate studies have been carried out by a number of different organisations since the inception of the project and although commercialisation of the technology has not been achieved to its fullest potential, impact studies indicate that solar cookers have a positive development impact on households through fuel-, energy- and time savings. The article aims to summarise the findings of the various studies and present an overview of use rates and impact data. A variety of factors influence solar cooker use rates, which in turn determine impacts. Some factors are related to the user, some to the environment in which the cooker is used and some to the cooker itself. Ultimately, the data shows that on average, only 17% of solar cooker owners do not use their stoves after purchase and that active solar cooker users utilise their stoves on average for 31% of their cooking incidences. Since the majority of solar stove buyers actually use their stoves and obtain real benefits, this suggests that that solar cookers are indeed not a solution looking for a problem but a solution worth promoting.  相似文献

The use of solar cookers is much needed in many regions with good solar radiation intensity throughout the world. The reasons are economical, as the price of fuel for cooking is no longer affordable by many families; ecological, as in many regions deforestation is also associated with the use of wood as an energy source; and social, as the money used to buy fuel could be used to buy food, medications and other needs to improve the quality of life. Because of the variety of solar cookers that has been presented in the literature, a general procedure to compare these cookers with one another is very complex. This article presents the general types of solar cookers, theirs basic characteristics, and experimental procedures to test the different types of solar cookers. The variables measured in these procedures are necessary to calculate parameters, which are used to compare the thermal performance of the solar cookers. In addition to these experimental procedures, a simplified analytical model is presented to design simple cooking systems. For more complex systems, results are shown and references are indicated in the text.  相似文献

Solar cooking technology has been promoted as a solution to both global poverty and environmental degradation, but relatively little research exists on the impact of solar oven usage on biomass fuel consumption. This study evaluates solar oven usage and wood consumption in northern Nicaragua during both the rainy and dry seasons, using surveys, temperature dataloggers, and direct measurements of fuelwood use. Solar oven owners reported usage on 79% of days during the dry season, and 41% of days during the rainy season. Comparison with oven temperature records confirmed usage on 50% of days during the dry season, and 16% of days during the rainy season. However, wood consumption measurements showed no statistically significant difference between days with solar oven usage and days without, suggesting that frequency of usage alone is not an appropriate proxy for fuel savings. Survey results suggest that a large part of solar oven usage came in addition to biomass cooking, as opposed to replacing it. These results suggest a need for further study of wood consumption in situ and more focus on the specific kinds of foods prepared in solar cookers, as well as local cultural and climatic conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to understand the reasons behind the continued use or disuse of solar cookers, and to outline the implications from the results of this study for future solar cooker projects. Twenty-eight families in three urban sites in Gujarat, India who have a solar cooker have been interviewed. Their experience with solar cookers and solar cooking is studied. Direct discussions with families who have practical experience with solar cooking, brings forth significant practical issues. The study shows that many disusers of solar cookers do not have a suitable place for their solar cookers. Other disusers could not adjust their daily routines with what solar cooking requires, and some disused their solar cookers because they were not interested in using them. Both objective factors and aspects of practical interest have been shown to be important issues for understanding the conditions of prospective users and the shaping of the projects and the relevant technologies. It is concluded that project developers should consider the potential users as an important partner in project development processes. For example project developers can by close dialogue with them, uncover and define practical parameters which have important bearing on higher usability of solar cookers.  相似文献

Two simple solar cookers, one made of clay and locally available materials, and the other of exfoliated vermiculite and cement tiles, have been designed, fabricated and tested. The comparative performance of both cookers is described, and their efficiencies are 22.6 (clay) and 24.9% (vermiculite), respectively. The cookers are capable of boiling 2 kg of animal feed per day, and represent the equivalent of 1350 MJ of fuel per year at Jodhpur. Payback periods for solar cookers made of vermiculite tiles vary from 0.50 to 3.47 years, depending upon the fuel they replace. The shorter payback period suggests that the use of the cooker is economical.  相似文献

This paper presents a model for prediction of the cooking power of a solar cooker based on three controlled parameters (solar intercept area, overall heat loss coefficient, and absorber plate thermal conductivity) and three uncontrolled variables (insolation, temperature difference, and load distribution). The model basis is a fundamental energy balance equation. Coefficients for each term in the model were determined by regression analysis of experimental data. The model was validated for commercially available solar cookers of both the box and concentrating types. The valid range of model application includes most of the feasible design space for family-sized solar cookers. The model can be used to estimate the cooking capacity of existing box type and concentrating type solar cookers. It can also be used to find the combinations of intercept area and heat loss coefficient required to cook a given quantity of food in a given climate.  相似文献

Solar cookers are broadly divided into a direct or focusing type, indirect or box-type and advanced solar cookers. The focusing and box-type solar cookers are for outdoor applications. The advanced solar cookers have the advantage of being usable indoors and thus solve one of the problems, which impede the social acceptance of solar cookers. The advanced type solar cookers are employing additional solar units that increase the cost. Therefore, the solar cooker must contain a heat storage medium to store thermal energy for use during off-sunshine hours. The main aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the melting/solidification fast cycling of the commercial grade acetanilide C8H9NO (Tm = 116 °C) and magnesium chloride hexahydrate MgCl2·6H2O (Tm = 116.7 °C) on their thermo-physical properties; such as melting point and latent heat of fusion, to be used as storage media inside solar cookers. Five hundred cycles have been performed. The thermo-physical properties are measured using the differential scanning calorimetric technique. The compatibility of the selected phase change materials (PCMs) with the containing material is also studied via the surface investigation, using the SIM technique, of aluminum and stainless steel samples embedded in the PCM during cycling. It is inferred that acetanilide is a promising PCM for cooking indoors and during law intensity solar radiation periods with good compatibility with aluminum as a containing material. However, MgCl2·6H2O is not stable during its thermal cycling (even with the extra water principle) due to the phase segregation problem; therefore, it is not recommended as a storage material inside solar cookers for cooking indoors. It is also indicated that MgCl2·6H2O is not compatible with either aluminum or stainless steel.  相似文献

The parameters which impact the value of photovoltaics (PV) to the electric utility is examined. High, medium, and low-load days in winter (January) and summer (July) are studied. The daily peak load is varied from 5838 MW to 9712 MW. These six days are studied for reference (no PV), high, medium, low, and intermittent-PV output cases. Results from these 30 case studies are summarized. In order to study the impact of operating PV systems on the electric utility production cost (fuel and variable operation and maintenance), the load profile of a southeastern utility and the PV output data from solar test facilities in Virginia and North Carolina are used. The performance analysis shows that, while the total production (fuel and variable O&M) cost savings are higher for higher solar days, the increase is not proportional to the amount of PV energy output. It is shown that the high solar day never produced the highest per-unit PV energy value. The highest per-unit PV energy values for both winter and summer days are found to be for the low solar days  相似文献

The international standard procedure for testing solar cookers and reporting performance was proposed at the Third World Conference on Solar Cooking (Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore, India, 6–10 January, 1997) and revised by the committee over the following months. The standard sets limits for environmental conditions, specifies test procedures and calls for performance to be reported in terms of cooking power (W). While this value, like the fuel economy rating of an automobile, is not a guarantee of performance, it does provide a useful tool for comparison. The entire standard is presented in this paper. It was evaluated both by using it to analyze data previously collected and by using it to test one of the solar cookers in the historical data set. The test standard cooking power curve clearly distinguishes between solar cookers of differing design. Estimates of solar cooker performance for different locations and dates are fairly consistent when the test standard is employed. The criteria of being easy to use and presenting data predictive of thermal performance are also satisfied.  相似文献

This paper presents the fabrication details and on-field experimental studies of two novel solar cookers, suitable for cooking requirements of small families; these are named as small family solar cookers (SFSC-1 and SFSC-2). Small size, good thermal performance, light weight, low-cost and short payback periods are some important features of these cookers. The values of some essential thermal performance parameters, first figure of merit (F1), second figure of merit (F2) and standard cooking power suggested by Bureau of Indian Standards and International Standard for box-type solar cookers, have been evaluated by experimental studies and found to be 0.116°C m2/W, 0.466, 30 W and 0.118°C m2/W, 0.488, 50 W for SFSC-1 and SFSC-2, respectively. A comparative analysis of the thermal performances of SFSCs with the solar cookers, developed by many authors, has also been presented here. The payback periods with respect to different cooking fuels for SFSCs have been found to be reasonably short.  相似文献

A double reflector hot box solar cooker with a Transparent Insulation Material (TIM) has been designed, fabricated, tested and the performance compared with a single reflector hot box solar cooker without TIM. A 40 mm thick honeycomb made of polycarbonate capillaries was encapsulated between two glazing sheets of the cooker to minimise convective losses from the window so that even during an extremely cold but sunny day two meals can be prepared, which is not possible in a hot box solar cooker without TIM. The use of one more reflectors resulted in an avoidance of tracking towards sun for 3 h so that cooking operations could be performed unattended, as compared to a hot box solar cooker where tracking ahead of the sun is required every hour. The efficiencies were 30.5% and 24.5% for cookers with and without a TIM respectively, during the winter season at Jodhpur. The energy saving by use of a solar cooker with TIM has been estimated to be 1485.0 MJ of fuel equivalent per year. The payback period varies between 1.66 and 4.23 y depending upon the fuel it replaces, and is in increasing order with respect to the following fuels: electricity, firewood, coal, LPG and kerosene. The estimated life is about 15 y. Therefore, the use of a solar cooker is economical. The double reflector hot box solar cooker with TIM will be a boon in popularising solar cookers in developing countries.  相似文献

Different types of tools, software and empirical methods to size and assess the performance of solar thermal systems are available today. A quick and easy-to-use graphical tool is proposed here. It is based on a single diagram, called a nomograph, which embeds technical and economic information, allowing the optimisation of the size and performance of a solar thermal system starting from the main input parameters, such as the specific costs of the system and the auxiliary fuel. The optimal surfaces are calculated as a function of the fuel cost through several regressions made on data from the application of the F-Chart method for a set of system configurations. The authors have found good correlations among these two parameters for given collectors types, climates and fuel costs.Furthermore, the design information stemming from the use of the diagram considers the optimal area of the surface of solar collectors, the corresponding annual solar fraction, the annualised total cost of the solar system and the conventional systems meeting the same load, the annual savings achieved with the use of solar system and the corresponding payback time. Nomographs have been drawn for three Italian locations, representative of different South Europe climates, for a given demand of hot water and for two types of collectors. The methods and algorithms related to the construction of the diagrams are described in this paper. Additional nomographs can be produced through a standardised procedure based on Excel Macros. An analysis of the results obtained is then performed for a sample application.  相似文献

A metering device for the determination of solar cooker use rate is presented. The device records food temperature, ambient temperature and irradiance. Automatic data evaluation yields the number of cooking cycles, cooking time, food “thermal mass”, as well as the impact on fuel consumption and GHG emission compared to other cooking techniques. Metering results are compared with actual conditions for box-type and concentrating solar cookers and found to be in agreement.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to estimate the potential of using biogas plants, solar cookers and improved cookstoves for domestic cooking in India. Based on 1991 statistics on the bovine population and ownership pattern, the potential number of family size biogas plants comes out to be around 38 million in the optimistic scenario whereas, in the realistic scenario it is around 29 million. The potential of improved cookstoves is estimated at about 90 million and that of solar cookers is estimated at about 75 million.  相似文献

This paper describes the influences which govern solar box cookers: HS 7534, HS 7033 and the newest design HS 5521. The best of solar cooker, type HS 7033 gave oven temperature of 202°C between 12:00 and 12:45 p.m. on October 7, 1997. Thirty-four units of this type have been field tested since September 1997. It was found that these solar cookers have a good heat storage capability, therefore they can be used for consecutive cooking. The optimization of the size, the aperture area, the insulator thickness, the oven volume and the reflector area leads to a new design, type HS 5521. Its volume is only 35% of the volume of HS 7033 and cheaper. The performance comparison of the last two solar cookers are described based on the data collected during testing with and without load. The HS 5521 has the same heat collection rate and is able to cook as fast as HS 7033.  相似文献

During the last 25 years, the author has designed, constructed, studied and promoted solar oven, hybrid solar/electric oven, solar oven cum drier, solar cooker cum water heater and solar still. In different parts of the world, solar cookers have been made, studied, patented, however, their real uses are very limited due to many reasons—unstable climate, economic, cultural, social and single use, etc. In order to overcome part of the problems mainly the last one, author has recently designed one hybrid food processor (multi-purposes device) and studied various technical and practical aspects. It has been used for cooking, heating/pasteurizing water (to inactivate microbes) and distillation of small quantity of water (to remove different minerals) and drying domestic products (fruits, vegetables and condiments/herbs, etc.). For more than three years of use, author has found this to be a useful device, mainly from convenience, fuel saving, economic and also from ecological point of view. This device can be used at any time and for different uses but with the reduced consumption of conventional fuel.  相似文献

Heat loss from buildings has a considerable share in waste of energy especially in Turkey since no or little insulation is used in existing and new buildings. Therefore, energy savings can be obtained by determining of heat loss characteristics with using proper thickness of insulation. For this purpose, in this study, calculations of optimum insulation thickness are carried out on a prototype building in Bursa as a sample city. Considering long term and current outdoor air temperature records (from 1992 to 2005), degree-hour (DH) values are calculated, and the variation of annual energy requirement of the building is investigated for various architectural design properties (such as air infiltration rate, glazing type, and area). Then, the effects of the insulation thickness on the energy requirement and total cost are presented. Based on life cycle cost (LCC) analysis, the optimum insulation thicknesses are determined for different fuel types. As a conclusion, the length of the heating period is average 221 days, and the mean heating DH value is found as 45 113.2 besides changing between 38 000 and 55 000. The optimum insulation thicknesses for Bursa vary between 5.3 and 12.4 cm depending on fuel types. In addition to this, the variation in Turkey is more dramatically.  相似文献

Dissemination programs of nontraditional cookstoves often fail. Nontraditional cookstoves aim to solve problems associated with biomass fuel usage in developing countries. Recent studies do not explain what drives user's cookstove choice. This study therefore builds a holistic framework that centralizes product-specific preferences or needs. The case study identifies product-specific factors that influence rural Senegalese inhabitants to switch to solar cooking, using best–worst scaling. Looking at the preferences, the case study classified 126 respondents, in three distinct market segments with different solar cooking expectations. The paper identifies socio-demographic characteristics that explain these differences in the respondents' preferences. Finally, the respondent sample is divided in two groups: solar cooker owners and non-owners. When studied with regard to the same issue, solar cooker owners appear to value benefits of the solar cooker lower than non-owners. This is due to program factors (such as formations, after-sales network) and miscommunication (such as a wrong image of the solar cooker) that highly influenced the respondents' cookstove choice. As a conclusion, solar cookers and solar cooking programs are not always adapted to the needs and requirements of the end-users. Needs-oriented and end-user adopted strategies are necessary in order to successfully implement nontraditional cookstoves programs.  相似文献

The continued economic decline of sub-Saharan Africa, and the African energy crisis in particular, have received considerable attention in recent literature. Little attention, however, has been given to the assessment of solar power as an environmentally sound and economically viable energy strategy. Considering the increasing fuelwood scarcity and debt incurred through petroleum imports, solar energy provides a welcome alternative to traditional biomass and fossil fuel energy sources. Research and development in solar energy has concentrated primarily on highly technical, capital intensive applications, leaving possibilities for small scale utilizations unexplored. This paper argues for small scale, decentralized development of solar power as a sustainable household fuel source for sub-Saharan Africa. Domestic cooking constitutes more than 60% of total energy use in the region and consumes scarce time, labor, income, and natural resources. Thus, the appropriate management of fuel and energy resources in the residential sector is crucial for significant development. This paper examines the economic viability of solar box cookers (SBCs), their costs and benefits both on the household and community levels, and how they may contribute to economic development. In arguing for the implementation of SBCs, policy implications in terms of financing and a comprehensive energy plan geared towards sustainable development are also presented.  相似文献
