The current author comments on the articles from the April 2007 American Psychologist special issue on eating disorders. The current author states that the contributors to this special issue are to be commended for acknowledging lack of progress in understanding, classifying, and treating anorexia nervosa (AN). They highlighted the acute need to refine diagnosis (see record 2007-04834-004), understand comprehensive causal mechanisms to tune treatments and transcend "hodgepodge diagnoses" (see record 2007-04834-005), study functional neural circuits and link behavior with "genomic, cellular, and systems data" (see record 2007-04834-003), and develop effective treatments (see record 2007-04834-006). The present author replies to Therese Spitzer's rejoinder (see record 2007-04031-001) to the present author's review (see record 2007-04428-001) of Spitzer's book Psychobattery. The preesent author maintains that Spitzer's central premise remains the stereotyped matching of psychology with epithets like "unproved treatments by unqualified personnel". May such anachronistic divisiveness between psychology and psychiatry be a last nostalgic twitch in the moribund combat of their mutually checkered past. Comments on article by Sue et al. (see record 2007-07130-001) on racial microaggression in clinical practice. Sue and his associates (May-June 2007) presented an interesting, but critically flawed, perspective on the nature of interracial interactions both in everyday life and in the consulting room. Sue and his colleagues (2007, p. 273) contended, for example, that racial microaggressions are "brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults to the target person or group." Moreover, their article leads one to believe that these microaggressions are somehow unique to interracial interactions. Sue and his colleagues seem intent on emphasizing the negative in interracial interactions, whether these interactions take place in the consulting room or in everyday life. Allan R. Buss responds to Bavelas' and Macdonald's criticisms of Buss's article (see record 1976-26634-001) on the evaluation of Canadian psychology departments. Buss says that Bavelas' (see record 2007-04411-001) criticisms are, in the main, important, insightful, and fundamentally correct and that Macdonald's (see record 2007-04410-001) criticisms are, in contrast to Bavelas', highly original, unimportant, and fundamentally incorrect. Comments on article by Sue et al. (see record 2007-07130-001) on racial microaggression in clinical practice. Sue et al. (2007) usefully demonstrated that microinteractions may express racist attitudes in therapeutic dyads, including attitudes that are consciously disavowed. Sue et al. (2007) focused on the presumed dynamics of racial persecution and did not analyze or consider the potential role of more general interpersonal dynamics in the described interaction patterns. This omission may result in or may reflect a somewhat unbalanced view. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Autumn is a time when nature prepares to rest. It is also one of nature's most beautiful seasons. The autumn beauty seen on the cover of this issue was captured on film by Steven Fey, a fine art landscape photographer based in Seattle, Washington. Portions of the following are based on an interview with the artist on March 6, 2007, and an interview with Arthur Weins on March 18, 2007. Replies to the numerous comments (see cases 2007-09070-001, 2007-09071-001, 2007-09072-001, 2007-09073-001, and 2007-09074-001) made on the current author's original article (see record 2007-09069-001). The crisis in higher education is far more about psychology than it is about education, and appropriately so. "Crisis" is, after all, a term from personality and clinical psychology. Our interventions must be more akin to the cognitive restructuring of psychotherapy than to the experimental or scientific analysis of a substantive issue. We already understand well enough the education part. We have not yet acknowledged the psychological part and unleased the power of action-research that allows us to combine living and knowing in way which does not make them a mutually exclusive choice. This article comments on the articles in the Special Section on Evidence-Based Psychological Treatments for Older Adults (see records 2007-03358-002, 2007-03358-003, 2007-03358-004, 2007-03358-005, and 2007-03358-006). The articles apply criteria developed by the Society of Clinical Psychology to evaluate treatments for late-life anxiety, insomnia, behavior disturbances in dementia, and caregiver distress. The articles document that there are evidence-based psychological treatments that can help older adults. However, there are 2 substantial hurdles: evidence and access. Gaps in the evidence, as mentioned by the authors of the articles in the special section, result from disproportionate research attention to some psychotherapies and some mental disorders, with corresponding lack of research about other treatments and disorders. The challenge for access is to ensure that older adults with treatable mental disorders will get connected to psychologists trained in these evidence-based therapies. Responds to the comments by H. N. Garb (see record 2007-19520-012) and A. M. Ruscio (see record 2007-19520-013) on the current authors' original article "Plate tectonics in the classification of personality disorder: Shifting to a dimensional model" (see record 2007-01685-001). Unable to respond to all of Garb's and Ruscio's concerns given space limitations, the current authors attempt to respond to key points regarding their article on integrating the classification of personality disorder with a dimensional model of general personality structure. These points include: clinical judgments; feasibility; communication; thresholds; and validity. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
