We measured the movements of the external ear, or pinna, using the magnetic search coil technique in cats trained to look at auditory and visual targets for a food reward. No behavioral contingencies were placed on pinna movements. Prominent pinna movements accompany eye movements when the animal orients to either auditory or visual stimuli. In visual trials the pinna movements are coordinated with eye movements, suggesting that they are part of the general orientation response of the animal. In auditory trials the pinna response was composed of two movements: short- and long-latency components. Whereas the long-latency component seemed to occur with the eye movement to the target, the short-latency component was coupled to the onset of the stimulus. The short-latency component ( approximately 25 msec) was highly asymmetrical, being largest in the pinna ipsilateral to the stimuli. In one animal it persisted after >10(5) trials.  相似文献

Tested R. Bandler and J. Grinder's (1975, 1979) neurolinguistic programming theory that eye movement direction and spoken predicates are indicative of sensory modality of imagery. 39 undergraduates reported on modality, sequence, and vividness of images to questions that evoked either no images or visual, auditory, or kinesthetic images. Eye movement direction and spoken predicates were matched with sensory modality of the questions. Ss reported images in the 3 modes, but no relation between imagery and eye movements or predicates was found. The visual modality was dominant. Visual images were most vivid and often reported. Most Ss rated themselves as visual, and most spoken predicates were visual. Data are discussed in the context of an ever-growing literature that does not support Bandler and Grinder's model and in the context of the difficulties in interpreting the model itself. The main aim in this work was to study the interaction between auditory and kinesthetic stimuli and its influence on motion control. The study was performed on healthy subjects and patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Thirty-five right-handed volunteers (young, PD, and age-matched healthy participants, and PD-patients) were studied with three different motor tasks (slow cyclic movements, fast cyclic movements, and slow continuous movements) and under the action of kinesthetic stimuli and sounds at different beat rates. The action of kinesthesia was evaluated by comparing real movements with virtual movements (movements imaged but not executed). The fast cyclic task was accelerated by kinesthetic but not by auditory stimuli. The slow cyclic task changed with the beat rate of sounds but not with kinesthetic stimuli. The slow continuous task showed an integrated response to both sensorial modalities. These data show that the influence of the multisensory integration on motion changes with the motor task and that some motor patterns are modulated by the simultaneous action of auditory and kinesthetic information, a cross-modal integration that was different in PD-patients. A visual–kinesthetic (V–K) dissociation procedure of neurolinguistic programming (NLP) was used in treating rape-induced anxiety and phobic reactions in 2 18- and 19-yr-old rape victims. NLP theory suggests that anxiety reactions experienced by rape victims is a function of the interrelated processes of synesthesia and anchoring. In these 2 case reports, the use of the V–K dissociation technique is explored. From this preliminary basis, further research entailing the use of this treatment procedure is suggested. Reviews studies of eye movements in reading and other information-processing tasks such as picture viewing, visual search, and problem solving. The major emphasis of the review is on reading as a specific example of the more general phenomenon of cognitive processing. Basic topics discussed are the perceptual span, eye guidance, integration across saccades, control of fixation durations, individual differences, and eye movements as they relate to dyslexia and speed reading. In addition, eye movements and the use of peripheral vision and scan paths in picture perception, visual search, and pattern recognition are discussed, as is the role of eye movements in visual illusion. The basic theme of the review is that eye movement data reflect the cognitive processes occurring in a particular task. Thirteen adults in long-term individual psychotherapy were interviewed regarding their internal representations (defined as bringing to awareness the internalized "image") of their therapists. Results indicated that in the context of a good therapeutic relationship, clients' internal representations combined auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (i.e., felt presence) modalities; were triggered when clients thought about past or future sessions, or when distressed; occurred in diverse locations; and varied in frequency, duration, and intensity. Clients felt positively about their representations and used them to introspect or influence therapy within sessions, beyond sessions, or both. The frequency of, comfort with, and use of clients' internal representations increased over the course of therapy, and the representations benefited the therapy and therapeutic relationship. Therapists tended not to take a deliberate role in creating clients' internal representations, and few clients discussed their internal representations with their therapists. Pavlidis has suggested that predictive saccadic tracking eye movements distinguish between reading disabled and normal children. We have examined saccadic eye movement tracking in 34 dyslexic and 33 control subjects, between 10 and 12 yr old. The subjects were equivalent in performance IQ (WISC-R), with differences between verbal and performance IQ of less than 30 points. Children with neurological, visual or auditory deficits or histories of emotional problems and hyperactivity were excluded. There were no differences between the groups on the eye movement tracking task when scored objectively by computerized analysis of the eye movement records, or by ranking of the records by an experienced observer. Our results (and those of other recent studies) fail to support Pavlidis' contention that eye movements hold the key to dyslexia.  相似文献

The latency of saccadic eye movements evoked by the presentation of auditory and visual targets was studied while starting eye position was either 0 or 20 deg right, or 20 deg left. The results show that for any starting position the latency of visually elicited saccades increases with target eccentricity with respect to the eyes. For auditory elicited saccades and for any starting position the latency decreases with target eccentricity with respect to the eyes. Therefore auditory latency depends on a retinotopic motor error, as in the case of visual target presentation.  相似文献

Given the potential importance of using modality preference with instruction, the authors tested whether learning style preference correlated with memory performance in each of 3 sensory modalities: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In Study 1, participants completed objective measures of pictorial, auditory, and tactile learning and learning style self-assessments. The results indicate that objective test performance did not correlate with learning style preference. In Study 2, the authors examined in more detail the information participants used to answer the learning style self-assessment. The findings indicate that participants answered the inventory using general memories and beliefs rather than specific examples of learning in different modalities. This error is addressed in the correction.] Eyewitnesses instructed to close their eyes during retrieval recall more correct and fewer incorrect visual and auditory details. This study tested whether eye closure causes these effects through a reduction in environmental distraction. Sixty participants watched a staged event before verbally answering questions about it in the presence of auditory distraction or in a quiet control condition. Participants were instructed to close or not close their eyes during recall. Auditory distraction did not affect correct recall, but it increased erroneous recall of visual and auditory details. Instructed eye closure reduced this effect equally for both modalities. The findings support the view that eye closure removes the general resource load of monitoring the environment rather than reducing competition for modality-specific resources. 1. To understand roles played by two cortical motor areas, the presupplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and supplementary motor area (SMA), in changing planned movements voluntarily, cellular activity was examined in two monkeys (Macaca fuscata) trained to perform an arm-reaching task in which they were asked to press one of two target buttons (right or left) in three different task modes. 2. In the first mode (visual), monkeys were visually instructed to result and press either a right or left key in response to a forth coming trigger signal. In the second mode (stay), monkeys were required to wait for the trigger signal and press the same target key as pressed in preceding trials. In the third mode (shift), a 50 Hz auditory cue instructed the monkey to shift the target of the future reach from the previous target to the previous nontarget. 3. While the monkeys were performing this task, we recorded 399 task-related cellular activities from the SMA and the pre-SMA. Among them, we found a group of neurons that exhibited activity changes related specifically to shift trials (shift-related cells). The following properties characterized these 112 neurons. First, they exhibited activity changes after the onset of the 50-Hz auditory cue and before the movement execution when the monkeys were required to change the direction of forthcoming movement. Second, they were not active when the monkeys pressed the same key without changing the direction of the movements. Third, they were not active when the monkeys received the 50-Hz auditory cue but failed to change the direction of the movements by mistake. These observations indicate that the activity of shift-related cells is related to the redirection of the forthcoming movements, but not to the auditory instruction itself or to the location of the target key or the direction of the forthcoming movements. 4. Although infrequently, monkeys made errors in the stay trials and changed directions of the reach voluntarily. In that case, a considerably high proportion of shift-related neurons (12 of 19) exhibited significant activity changes long before initiation of the reach movement. These long-lasting activities were not observed during the preparatory period in correct stay trials, but resembled the shift-related activity observed when the target shift was made toward the same direction. Thus these activity changes were considered to be also related to the process of changing the intended movements voluntarily. 5. We found another population of neurons that showed activity modulation when the target shift was induced by the visual instruction in visual trials (visually guided shift-related neurons). These neurons were active when the light-emitting diode (LED) guided the forthcoming reach to the previous nontarget but not to the previous target. Therefore their activity was not a simple visual response to the LED per se. A majority of them also showed shift-related activity in shift trials (19 of 22 in monkey 2). 6. Neurons exhibiting the shift-related activity were distributed differentially among the two areas. In the pre-SMA, 31% of the neurons recorded showed the shift-related activity, whereas in the SMA, only 7% showed such an activity. These results suggest that pre-SMA and SMA play differential roles in updating the motor plans in accordance with current requirements.  相似文献

Tested the hypothesis that the Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) predicts strength of need for stimulation under conditions of sensory restriction. The SSS was administered to 214 male undergraduates. During a 3-hr isolation period, 15 high- and 15 low-SSS scorers were free to button press for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimulation. Except for visual stimulation high-SSS scorers button pressed at a higher rate than low-SSS scorers, but the differences were not significant. Low-SSS scorers showed a significantly greater need for visual stimulation than high-SSS scorers. High-SSS scorers showed a significant preference for kinesthetic stimulation, while low-SSS scorers had a significant preference for visual stimulation. Four experiments were conducted to investigate the role of stimulus-driven and goal-driven control in saccadic eye movements. Participants were required to make a speeded saccade toward a predefined target presented concurrently with multiple nontargets and possibly 1 distractor. Target and distractor were either equally salient (Experiments 1 and 2) or not (Experiments 3 and 4). The results uniformly demonstrated that fast eye movements were completely stimulus driven, whereas slower eye movements were goal driven. These results are in line with neither a bottom-up account nor a top-down notion of visual selection. Instead, they indicate that visual selection is the outcome of 2 independent processes, one stimulus driven and the other goal driven, operating in different time windows. Through two experiments, the study sought to emphasize the usefulness of the visual and kinesthetic imagery in mental practice. In Experiment 1, it was hypothesized that when the task to be learned through mental practice necessitates the reproduction of a form by drawing, the visual image, which provides a wide span of apprehension, is more suitable than the kinesthetic image. On the other hand, the kinesthetic image that supplies inputs from the muscles' positions and movements should be more appropriate for the acquisition of the duration of the drawing. In Experiment 2, it was hypothesized that the task, transformed into a motor task necessitating minute coordination of the two hands, would benefit more from kinesthetic imagery. To have optimal control over what was actually experienced during mental practice, the participants' imagery skills were measured. The participants also benefited from prior imagery training. The results demonstrate that when using mental practice to initially acquire a task, visual imagery is better for tasks that emphasize form while kinesthetic imagery is better for those tasks that emphasize timing or minute coordination of the two hands. The ability to keep track of locations in a dynamic, multimodal environment is crucial for successful interactions with other people and objects. The authors investigated the existence and flexibility of spatial indexing in adults and 6-month-old infants by adapting an eye-tracking paradigm from D. C. Richardson and M. J. Spivey (2000). Multimodal events were presented in specific locations, and eye movements were measured when the auditory portion of the stimulus was presented without its visual counterpart. Experiment 1 showed that adults spatially index auditory information even when the original associated locations move. Experiments 2 and 3 showed that infants are capable of both binding multimodal events to locations and tracking those locations when they move. Monkeys generated disjunctive smooth pursuit eye movements when they tracked visual targets that moved toward or away from them. Eye acceleration was computed during the initial 100 msec of pursuit (the open-loop interval) for various target trajectories. The initial acceleration of either eye was a function of the target's motion with respect to that eye, regardless of whether or not the pursuit was conjugate or disjunctive, or performed with one eye occluded. Eye movements produced by fusional vergence could be separated temporally from eye movements produced by smooth pursuit using step-ramp paradigms. The separation of the two responses demonstrates that the fusional vergence system operates in parallel with the smooth pursuit system, presumably to minimize disparity, but not to generate disjunctive components of smooth pursuit eye movements.  相似文献

Two experiments with 10 21-37 yr old males were conducted to determine the effects of a concurrent auditory dot/dash identification task on pursuit eye movements (PEMs). Results indicate there was a significant (20%) but transitory task-induced restriction of the range of both an 18° horizontal and a 14° vertical PEM visual angle. Doubling the presentation rate of the concurrent task accounted for an additional 5% restriction of PEM range. Results also indicate that the eye-movement range was unaffected by both prior knowledge of the task and 4 consecutive practice trials. It is suggested that both the rapidity of target movement and the presence of concurrent mental tasks could significantly shrink an operator's PEM ranges during viewing of dynamic visual displays such as airborne low-level TV and forward-looking infrared. Evaluated theories of response to altered retinal feedback i.e., associative learning doctrines and the feedback-compensation hypothesis in relation to their application in defining human factors principles in machine and perceptual training designs. Using 12 Ss, controlled comparisons were made of the relative effects of reversed and delayed feedback of head and eye movements under conditions in which head movements could not compensate altered feedback of eye movements and vice versa. Findings, e.g., the accuracy of ocular tracking, etc., are discussed. Some results indicate that there was little or no learned adaptation to the reversed and delayed vision produced by head and eye movements. Findings support a behavioral cybernetic interpretation of the guidance factors in man-machine and perceptual systems relationships by showing that the effects of altered feedback in machine and systems operation are determined by movement capabilities in compensating displacements and delays in sensory input. Results also suggest that visual impairments may be produced by delays in the retinal feedback effects of eye and head movements and that these defects may require dynamic methods of optometric diagnosis and training for their measurement and correction. Discusses 6 categories of design and methodological errors contained in 39 empirical studies of neurolinguistic programming (NLP) documented through April 1984. NLP refers to a way of organizing and understanding the structure of subjective experience and is concerned with the ways in which people process information (through visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic modes). The 6 categories of errors found in the literature include lack of understanding of the concepts of pattern recognition and inadequate control of context, unfamiliarity with NLP as an approach to therapy, lack of familiarity with the NLP meta-model of linguistic communication, failure to consider the role of stimulus–response associations, inadequate interviewer training and definitions of rapport, and logical mistakes. Representative reports reflecting each category are discussed. Suggestions are offered for improving the quality of research on NLP.
