Effects of incident illumination on phase-contrast images obtained by means of free-space propagation are investigated under the "transport-of-intensity" approximation. Analytical expressions for image intensity distribution are derived in the cases of coherent quasi-plane and quasi-spherical incident waves, as well as for spatially incoherent and quasi-homogeneous sources and some other types of sources. Practical methods for measuring the relevant parameters of the incident radiation are discussed together with formulas allowing one to calculate the effect of these parameters on the image intensity distribution. The results are expected to be useful in quantitative in-line imaging, phase retrieval, and tomography with polychromatic and spatially partially coherent radiation. As an application we present a method for simultaneous "automatic" phase retrieval and spatial deconvolution in in-line imaging of homogeneous objects using extended polychromatic x-ray sources.  相似文献

We report design theories of a diffractive superresolution element (DSE) to implement optical superresolution of focused partially spatially coherent laser beams. The design problem of the DSE can be transformed into a problem of linear programming to obtain a globally optimal solution. By using the design theories, some fundamental limits of optical superresolution of focused partially spatially coherent laser beams are proposed, and several design examples are provided. As expected, both the fundamental limits and the design examples show that worse spatial coherence will cause worse superresolution performance. The design theories provide a design approach with partially coherent beams and may be useful for other design problems under partially coherent illumination.  相似文献

We discuss the role of coherence in x-ray imaging and consider how phase-space tomography can be used to extract information about partial coherence. We describe the application of phase-space tomography to x-ray imaging and recover the spatial coherence properties of a one-dimensional soft (1.5 keV) x-ray beam from a synchrotron undulator source. We present phase-space information from a Young's experiment and observe negative regions in the quasi-probability distribution. We show that, given knowledge of the coherence of the beam, we can use partially coherent diffraction data to recover fully coherent information, and we present some simple experimental demonstrations of this capability.  相似文献

Image reconstruction of partially coherent light is interpreted as quantum-state reconstruction. An efficient method based on the maximum-likelihood estimation is proposed for acquiring information from blurred intensity measurements affected by noise. Connections with incoherent-image restoration are pointed out. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated numerically. Spatial and correlation details significantly below the diffraction limit are revealed in the reconstructed pattern.  相似文献

The optimum apodizers have been designed with the tacit assumption that the point-spread functions of the optical instruments that could use them are due to spatially coherent waves. In practice, there is considerable deviation from this ideal condition. In the present paper analytical expressions are given which can be used for a comprehensive study of the performance of the optimum apodizers in partially coherent illumination. The loss of coherence is assumed to be due to atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results concerning the dependence of the encircled energy, the central intensity, the expected resolution etc., for two chosen apodizers show that the performance, in partially coherent illumination, of the optimum apodizers may be contrary to their expected performance. It is therefore very important to take into account the actual state of coherence of the aperture illumination in the designing of apodizers that are to be used under non-ideal conditions.  相似文献

The statistical properties of laser speckle with partially coherent light are related to the scattering characteristics of an optically diffuse material. A diffusion equation model is shown to yield a speckle contrast ratio that agrees well with measurements of opaque plastics of varying thicknesses. We show that partially coherent light can be used to determine material parameters for highly scattering media. Measured data for stratified materials with differing scattering properties indicate that this technique may be useful in detecting inhomogeneities.  相似文献

A partially coherent beam with flat-topped profile is proposed. The cross-spectral density of this beam can be expressed as a finite series of the cross-spectral density of partially coherent Gaussian-Schell-model beams with different parameters. Analytical propagation formulas for partially coherent flat-topped beams are derived through aligned and misaligned optical systems. The propagation property of partially coherent flat-topped beams in free space is illustrated numerically. The fractional Fourier transform of partially coherent fiat-topped beams is also studied. Our method provides a convenient way to describe partially coherent flat-topped beams and treat their propagation and transformation.  相似文献

Paraxial propagation of a partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beam through aligned and misaligned ABCD optical systems is investigated based on the generalized Collins formula for treating the propagation of a partially coherent beam through such optical systems. Analytical formulas for the cross-spectral density of a partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beam propagating through such optical systems are derived. As an application example, we derive the propagation formulas for a partially coherent flattened Gaussian beam by expressing it as a superposition of a series of partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beams by using polynomial expansion. The focusing properties of a partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beam focused by a thin lens are studied as a numerical example.  相似文献

The beam wander of a partially coherent Airy beam in a turbulent atmosphere was investigated. By using the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral, as analytical expression is derived for the second-order moment of a partially coherent Airy beam. Based on the theory proposed by Andrews, a general expression is obtained for the beam wander of a partially coherent Airy beam. With the help of the expression, various factors which impact on the beam wander are illustrated numerically. The results show that the beam wander of a partially coherent Airy beam decreases with the increase of the characteristic scale and the decrease of the coherent length or the exponent truncation factor. The value of the beam wander is a maximum when the exponent truncation factor is 0.63, no matter what the coherent lengths are. Our results provide an effective way to control the beam wander of a partially coherent Airy beam in practice.  相似文献

The focusing properties of coherent and partially coherent dark hollow beams (DHBs) through a paraxial ABCD optical system are theoretically investigated. It is found that the evolution behavior of the intensity distribution of focused partially coherent DHBs is closely related to their spatial coherence. The radiation forces (RFs) of focused coherent and partially coherent DHBs acting on a Rayleigh dielectric particle are also theoretically investigated. Numerical results show that the coherent and partially coherent DHBs can be focused into a tight focal spot, which can be used to stably trap a Rayleigh dielectric particle with high refractive index at the focus point. The influences of different beam parameters, including the spatial coherence, beam waist width, beam order, and hollow parameter of partially coherent DHBs, on the RFs and the trap stiffness are analyzed in detail. Finally, the stability conditions for effective trapping particles are also discussed.  相似文献

A simple model called partially coherent flattened Gaussian beam (FGB) is proposed to describe a partially coherent beam with a flat-topped spatial profile. An explicit and analytical formula is derived for the cross-spectral density of a partially coherent FGB propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system. The propagation factor and propagation properties of a partially coherent FGB in free space are studied in detail and found to be closely related to its coherence and beam order.  相似文献

The closed-form expression for the mean-squared beam width of partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian (H-G) beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence is derived. The influence of turbulence on the spreading of partially coherent H-G beams is studied quantitatively by examining the mean-squared beam width. It is found that the smaller the coherence length sigma(0) of the source is, and the larger the beam order m and the wavelength lambda are, the less partially coherent H-G beams are affected by the turbulence, although the beams with smaller sigma(0), larger m, and larger lambda have greater spreading in free space. In addition, it is shown that two partially coherent H-G beams may generate the same angular spread and that there exist equivalent partially coherent H-G beams that may have the same directionality as a fully coherent Gaussian beam in free space and also in turbulence. The results are illustrated by examples, and a comparison with previous work is also made.  相似文献

The fractional Fourier transform (FRT) is applied to a partially coherent off-axis Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) beam, and an analytical formula is derived for the FRT of a partially coherent off-axis GSM beam. The corresponding tensor ABCD law for performing the FRT of a partially coherent off-axis GSM beam is also obtained. As an application example, the FRT of a partially coherent linear laser array that is expanded as a sum of off-axis GSM beams is studied. The derived formulas are used to provide numerical examples. The formulas provide a convenient way to analyze and calculate the FRT of a partially coherent off-axis GSM beam.  相似文献

The effects of turbulence on the beam quality of apertured partially coherent beams have been studied both analytically and numerically. Taking the Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) beam as a typical example of partially coherent beams, closed-form expressions for the average intensity, mean-squared beam width, power in the bucket, beta parameter, and Strehl ratio of apertured partially coherent beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence are derived. It is shown that the smaller the beam truncation parameter is, the less affected by turbulence the apertured partially coherent beams are. Furthermore, the apertured partially coherent beams are less sensitive to the effects of turbulence than unapertured ones. The main results are interpreted physically.  相似文献

The subject is the spectral characteristics of partially coherent light whose spectral degree of coherence satisfies or violates the scaling law in diffraction by a circular aperture. Three kinds of spectral correlations of the incident light are considered. It is shown that no matter whether the partially coherent light satisfies or violates the scaling law, a spectral switch defined as a rapid transition of spectral shifts is always found in the diffraction field. Different spectral correlations of the incident field in the aperture result in different points at which the spectral switch occurs. With an increment in the correlations, the position at which the spectral switch takes place moves toward the point at which the phase of the center frequency component omega0 becomes singular for illumination by spatially fully coherent light. For light that satisfies the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to the diffraction-induced spectral changes; for partially coherent light that violates the scaling law, the spectral switch is attributed to both the diffraction-induced spectral changes and the correlation-induced spectral changes.  相似文献

We report the experimental observation of the fractional Fourier transform (FRT) for a partially coherent optical beam with Gaussian statistics [i.e., partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) beam]. The intensity distribution (or beam width) and the modulus of the square of the spectral degree of coherence (or coherence width) of a partially coherent GSM beam in the FRT plane are measured, and the experimental results are analyzed and agree well with the theoretical results. The FRT optical system provides a convenient way to control the properties, e.g., the intensity distribution, beam width, spectral degree of coherence, and coherence width, of a partially coherent beam.  相似文献

Propagation theories of partially coherent electromagnetic fields based on coherent mode decomposition or separated-coordinate mode decomposition are proposed. With the proposed propagation theories, various powerful theories for the propagation of fully coherent electromagnetic fields can be used for the propagation of partially coherent electromagnetic fields. The proposed theories are applicable to any propagation problem of partially coherent electromagnetic fields governed by linear Maxwell equations. Some examples are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed theories.  相似文献

The propagation properties of a partially coherent Lorentz-Gauss vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis were studied. The analytical expressions of the partially coherent Lorentz-Gauss vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal were derived. Based on the derived formulae, the average intensity properties and evolution properties of the coherent vortex of the partially coherent Lorentz-Gauss vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal were illustrated using numerical examples. The influences of the uniaxial crystal and the parameters of the beam at the source plane of z?=?0 on the average intensity and evolution properties of the coherent vortex for the partially coherent Lorentz-Gauss vortex beam are analyzed in detail.  相似文献

The synthesis of diffraction-free fields with different profiles is described. The synthesis is done by illuminating a screen containing a circular slit with a cosine beam. The treatment is equivalent to the modulation of the slit transfer characteristics and makes possible a tunable interference interaction of Bessel beams with noncommon axes. These results are generalized, and it is shown that coherent diffraction-free fields with arbitrary profiles can be expressed as the superposition of shifted zero-order Bessel beams and temporary parametric representations of the shifted functions. Diffraction-free fields with partially coherent features can be obtained. Experimental results are shown for each case.  相似文献
