Unlike in the case of sound where there is a compressed but straightforward relationship between frequency of sound waves and the perceived pitch, in the case of color the relationship is highly nonlinear, as first pointed out by Ostwald in 1916. In this article, the relationship between the perceptual Munsell hue scale and the related dominant wavelengths of the color chips involved is investigated. A hypothesis is proposed according to which the immediate cause of the nonlinearity can be found in the relative activation of the kinds of chromatically opponent functions shown to exist in neurons of the lateral geniculate nuclei. However, at this time, the relationship is only correlational, given the lack of deeper understanding of the relationship between the physiological operation of the color vision system and conscious experiences of color. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents an attempt to quantify the relationship between porosity and interparticle forces for mono-sized spheres. Two systems are considered: the packing of wet coarse spheres where the dominant interparticle force is the capillary force, and the packing of dry fine spheres where the dominant force is the van der Waals force. The interrelationships between porosity, capillary force and liquid content are first discussed based on the well-established theories and experimental observations. The resultant relationship between porosity and capillary force is then applied to the packing of fine particles to quantify the van der Waals force in a packing. A generalised relationship between porosity and interparticle forces results as an extension of this analysis. The usefulness of this relationship is finally demonstrated in depicting the fundamentals governing the relationship between porosity and particle size. 相似文献

A theoretical relationship is presented relating acoustic velocity to dilatation in two-phase systems. The theory is based on studies of seismic propagation by Kuster and Toksöz, who include acoustic propagation in a fluid matrix containing spherical or spheroidal solid inclusions as a special case of their theory. The relationship presented in this paper applies in the long wavelength limit and predicts a linear relationship between acoustic dilatation and volume dilatation in crystallizing liquids, when the acoustic dilatation is much less than unity. I anticipate that this theory may lead to the application of acoustics in the assessment of a wide range of crystallizing systems such as oils. 相似文献

Experimental studies have demonstrated that there are close correlations between the normalized yields of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from the combustion of materials containing nitrogen. In this paper, a generalized relationship using the stoichiometric oxygen to fuel mass ratio (SOFMR) is derived to represent these correlations. Using this generalized relationship, the predicted yields of HCN for nylon in tube furnace experiments and HCN concentrations in full‐scale cable fire tests are in good agreement with the corresponding measured data. The derived relationship is used to analyse the contributions of CO from different materials in a complex fire reconstruction. The generalized relationship is then used to predict HCN concentrations in two full‐scale nylon fires and the predicted concentrations are compared with both experimental data and predictions from a flamelet model. Finally, a method to incorporate the generalized relationship within CFD fire simulations to determine HCN (or CO) concentrations based on measurements of CO (or HCN) yields is presented.
