An experimental study on the combustion and emission characteristics of a direct-injection spark-ignited engine fueled with natural gas/hydrogen blends under various ignition timings was conducted. The results show that ignition timing has a significant influence on engine performance, combustion and emissions. The interval between the end of fuel injection and ignition timing is a very important parameter for direct-injection natural gas engines. The turbulent flow in the combustion chamber generated by the fuel jet remains high and relative strong mixture stratification is introduced when decreasing the angle interval between the end of fuel injection and ignition timing giving fast burning rates and high thermal efficiencies. The maximum cylinder gas pressure, maximum mean gas temperature, maximum rate of pressure rise and maximum heat release rate increase with the advancing of ignition timing. However, these parameters do not vary much with hydrogen addition under specific ignition timing indicating that a small hydrogen fraction addition of less than 20% in the present experiment has little influence on combustion parameters under specific ignition timing. The exhaust HC emission decreases while the exhaust CO2 concentration increases with the advancing of ignition timing. In the lean combustion condition, the exhaust CO does not vary much with ignition timing. At the same ignition timing, the exhaust HC decreases with hydrogen addition while the exhaust CO and CO2 do not vary much with hydrogen addition. The exhaust NOx increases with the advancing of ignition timing and the behavior tends to be more obvious at large ignition advance angle. The brake mean effective pressure and the effective thermal efficiency of natural gas/hydrogen mixture combustion increase compared with those of natural gas combustion when the hydrogen fraction is over 10%.  相似文献

In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model of a hydrogen direct-injection engine was established, and the combustion model was verified by experimental data. The influence of the injection timing and nozzle diameter on ultra-lean combustion was evaluated. The results suggest that, with the delay in the injection timing, the mixture concentration near the spark plug and combustion speed gradually increase. The maximum thermal efficiency increased from 47.44% to 49.87%. The combustion duration and ignition lag are shortened from 19.15°CA to 11.15°CA to 16.13°CA and 5.92°CA, respectively. As the nozzle diameter increased, the injection duration was shortened, and the mixture distribution area became more concentrated. Furthermore, under ultra-lean combustion, the combustion rate is more sensitive to the distribution of the mixture. Appropriately increasing the equivalence ratio near the spark plug can significantly shorten the ignition lag and combustion duration and obtain a higher thermal efficiency.  相似文献

Hydrogen is regarded as a promising alternative fuel in the future. The direct-injection (DI) hydrogen engine has been demonstrated to offer large power without the risk of abnormal combustion. For the engine test of combustion analysis, the piezoelectric transducer measures the dynamic cylinder pressure data rather than the absolute one. The traditional method of absolute cylinder pressure correction is normally based on the polytropic index. This paper investigated the polytropic index effects by injection duration, start timing of injection and speed based on a 2.0 L direct-injection hydrogen engine. The experiments found that, since the injection of large volume hydrogen leads to approximately 0.8 bar increase of cylinder pressure in the compression stroke, the traditional correct method is not suitable for the DI hydrogen engine. What's more, the polytropic index drops from 2.2 to 1.22 with the changes of the crank angle and is sensitive to the concentration of the hydrogen. The study of the instantaneous polytropic index can not only be used to calculate the accurate heat release rate but also guide the research of the heat transfer of the DI hydrogen engine. The average polytropic index of 1.32 provides a new reference for the absolute cylinder pressure correction of the DI hydrogen engine.  相似文献

The application of hydrogen direct-injection enrichment improves the performance of gasoline Wankel rotary engine, and the hydrogen injection strategy has a significant impact on combustion, knock, and emissions. The Z160F Wankel rotary engine was used as the investigated compact engine, and the simulation model was developed using CONVERGE software. The combustion, knock and emissions characteristics of the engine were studied with the different mass flow of hydrogen injection, i.e., the trapezoid, wedge, slope, triangle and rectangle type of gas injection rate shape. In the numerical simulations, the in-cylinder pressure oscillations were monitored using monitoring points, and the knock index (KI) was used as an evaluation indicator. The study revealed that the gas injection rate shape significantly affected the mixture of hydrogen and air, thus impacting combustion, knock and emissions. When the injection rate shape was rectangle, the flame speed was faster, the peak pressure in the cylinder was higher, and the corresponding crank angle was earlier, which led to higher pressure oscillations in the cylinder and larger KI. Based on the rectangle injection rate shape, the KI decreased by 75.81%, 33.47%, 26.46% and 76.58% for trapezoid, wedge, slope, and triangle, respectively, and the indicated mean effective pressure increased by 15.68%, 5.07%, 0.56% and 14.98%, respectively. Due to the small difference in maximum temperature, which resulted in very little variation in nitrogen oxides for each injection rate shape, the total hydrocarbon emissions of the trapezoid and triangle injection rate shape was high due to the delayed combustion phase. This paper provides a solution for direct hydrogen injection to improve the combustion, knock and emissions behavior of the rotary engine.  相似文献

In order to avoid the abnormal combustion in high-power hydrogen engine, a 3D CFD numerical model of a direct-injection spark-ignition hydrogen engine was built up based on a large-bore medium-speed four-stroke marine diesel engine using CONVERGE software. To obtain the influence of injection parameters on mixture homogeneity, a dimension reduction optimization method was proposed. The results revealed that the turbulence intensity and the penetration distance varied with the injection parameters, determined the level of mixture homogeneity. The performance comparison between the hydrogen engine and prototype diesel engine showed a great potential of hydrogen in internal combustion (IC) engines.  相似文献

Based on the dual challenges of the global energy crisis and environmental pollution, hydrogen has been recognized as an ideal alternative internal combustion engine (ICE) fuel. To improve the combustion efficiency of hydrogen direct injection ICE, we numerically analyzed the effects of different injection parameters, including injection timing, injection pressure, and dual injection, on the formation of a hydrogen-air mixture using the CONVERGE software from the perspective of mass transfer and flow state. It was determined that it is enough to set the injection timing to −88° after top dead center (ATDC) for both uniform mixture and desirable indicated thermal efficiency (ITE). However, when the injection timing is set to −43° ATDC, an acceptable ITE and effective combustion can be achieved by employing the “jet-room coordination” effect of the ω chamber. Injection pressure has a minimal effect on mixture formation and combustion. In contrast, the timing and mass fraction of secondary injection have a significant influence on tumble strength, which is a key factor for the mixture improvement.  相似文献

Combustion and emission characteristics of a spray guided direct-injection spark-ignition engine fueled with natural gas-hydrogen blends were investigated. Results show that the brake thermal efficiency increases with the increase of hydrogen fraction and it shows an increasing and then decreasing trend with advancing fuel-injection timing. For later injection timings, the beginning of heat release is advanced with increasing hydrogen fraction, while the beginning of heat release is advanced and then retarded with the increase of hydrogen fraction at earlier injection timings. The flame development duration, rapid combustion duration and total combustion duration decrease with increasing hydrogen fraction. Maximum cylinder gas pressure, maximum mean gas temperature, maximum rate of pressure rise and maximum heat release rate show an increasing and then decreasing trend with the increase of hydrogen fraction. Brake NOx emission is increased and then decreased, while brake HC, CO and CO2 emissions decrease with the increase of hydrogen fraction.  相似文献

Internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is an effective strategy to reduce pumping loss and improve fuel economy using mixture dilution than traditional external EGR. In this paper, the internal EGR was obtained by exhaust gas trap (EGT) using the negative valve overlap (NVO) method. The effects of EGT on the part-load characteristics, including energy conversion, combustion and emission characteristics were studied in a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. The experimental results showed that EGT can save fuel consumption by 5–16% due to reduced pumping loss and improved combustion efficiency, while it also can increase the engine cyclic variation and combustion duration. The engine cyclic variation increases with increasing of the EGT level; this can be overcome by advancing spark timing to stabilize the combustion. The flame propagation and compression combustion occurred simultaneously when high EGT level and high compression ratio were adopted; the combined combustion can reduce combustion duration but increase the engine cyclic variation. The stratified mixture using the two-stage injection strategy can reduce the engine cyclic variation and shorten the combustion duration so as to improve the thermal efficiency. Moreover, the second injection mass ratio and timing take an important effect on the combustion and emission characteristics in DISI engines using EGT strategy.  相似文献

In traffic transportation, the use of low-carbon fuels is the key to being carbon-neutral. Hydrogen-enhanced natural gas gets more and more attention, but practical engines fueled with it often suffer from low engine power output. In this study, the inner mechanism of hydrogen direct injection on methane combustion was optically studied based on a dual-fuel supply system. Simultaneous pressure acquisition and high-speed direct photography were used to analyze engine performance and flame characteristics. The results show that lean combustion can improve methane engine's thermal efficiency, but is limited by cyclic variations under high excess air coefficient conditions. Hydrogen addition mainly acts as an ignition promoter for methane lean combustion, as a result, the lean combustion limit and thermal efficiency can be improved. As for hydrogen injection timing, late injection can increase the in-cylinder turbulence intensity but also the inhomogeneity, so a suitable injection timing is needed for improving the engine's performance. Besides, late hydrogen injection is more effective under lean conditions because of the reduced mixture inhomogeneity. The current study shall give some insights into the controlling strategies for natural gas/hydrogen engines.  相似文献

Up to 90% hydrogen energy fraction was achieved in a hydrogen diesel dual-fuel direct injection (H2DDI) light-duty single-cylinder compression ignition engine. An automotive-size inline single-cylinder diesel engine was modified to install an additional hydrogen direct injector. The engine was operated at a constant speed of 2000 revolutions per minute and fixed combustion phasing of ?10 crank angle degrees before top dead centre (°CA bTDC) while evaluating the power output, efficiency, combustion and engine-out emissions. A parametric study was conducted at an intermediate load with 20–90% hydrogen energy fraction and 180-0 °CA bTDC injection timing. High indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of up to 943 kPa and 57.2% indicated efficiency was achieved at 90% hydrogen energy fraction, at the expense of NOx emissions. The hydrogen injection timing directly controls the mixture condition and combustion mode. Early hydrogen injection timings exhibited premixed combustion behaviour while late injection timings produced mixing-controlled combustion, with an intermediate point reached at 40 °CA bTDC hydrogen injection timing. At 90% hydrogen energy fraction, the earlier injection timing leads to higher IMEP/efficiency but the NOx increase is inevitable due to enhanced premixed combustion. To keep the NOx increase minimal and achieve the same combustion phasing of a diesel baseline, the 40 °CA bTDC hydrogen injection timing shows the best performance at which 85.9% CO2 reduction and 13.3% IMEP/efficiency increase are achieved.  相似文献

Recently, the increasing demand for energy requires the use of alternative fuels, especially in fossil fueled power systems. As a promising alternative fuel for next-generation diesel engines that utilize fossil fuel, hydrogen fuel is one step ahead due to its positive properties. In this study, the effects of hydrogen on the performance of a diesel engine have been numerically investigated with respect to different injection ratios and timings. The numerical results of the study for 25% load conditions on a single-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine have been validated against experimental data taken from literature and good agreement has been observed for pressure results. Emission parameters such as NOx, CO and performance parameters such as cylinder temperature, pressure, power, thermal efficiency and IMEP are presented comparatively. The results of numerical analyses show that the maximum pressure, temperature and heat release rate are observed with injection ratio of H15 and early injection timing (20° CA BTDC). Besides that, engine power, thermal efficiency and IMEP are greatly improved with increasing injection ratio and early injection timing. Although combustion chamber performance parameters improve with rising the hydrogen injection ratio, higher NOx emissions have also been detected as a negative side effect. Furthermore, while early injection timing increases diesel engine performance, it also causes an increase in NOx emissions. Therefore, precise determination of injection timing together with the optimum amount of hydrogen has revealed that it brings crucial improvement in engine performance and emissions.  相似文献

The in-cylinder hydrogen fuel injection method (diesel engine) induces air during the intake stroke and injects hydrogen gas directly into the cylinder during the compression stroke. Fundamentally, because hydrogen gas does not exist in the intake pipe, backfire, which is the most significant challenge to increasing the torque of the hydrogen port fuel injection engine, does not occur. In this study, using the gasoline fuel injector of a gasoline direct-injection engine for passenger vehicles, hydrogen fuel was injected at high pressures of 5 MPa and 7 MPa into the cylinder, and the effects of the fuel injection timing, including the injection pressure on the output performance and efficiency of the engine, were investigated. Strategies for maximizing engine output performance were analyzed. The fuel injection timing was retarded from before top dead center (BTDC) 350 crank angle degrees (CAD) toward top dead center (TDC). The minimum increase in the best torque ignition timing improved, and the efficiency and excess air ratio increased, resulting in an increase in torque and decrease in NOx emissions. However, the retardation of the fuel injection timing is limited by an increase in the in-cylinder pressure. By increasing the fuel injection pressure, the torque performance can be improved by further retarding the fuel injection timing or increasing the fuel injection period. The maximum torque of 142.7 Nm is achieved when burning under rich conditions at the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio.  相似文献

The n-butanol fuel, as a renewable and clean biofuel, could ease the energy crisis and decrease the harmful emissions. As another clean and renewable energy, hydrogen properly offset the high HC emissions and the insufficient of dynamic property of pure n-butanol fuel in SI engines, because of the high diffusion coefficient, high adiabatic flame velocity and low heat value. Hydrogen direct injection not only avoids backfire and lower intake efficiency but also promotes to form in-cylinder stratified mixture, which is helpful to enhance combustion and reduce emissions. This experimental study focused on the combustion and emissions characteristics of a hydrogen direct injection stratified n-butanol engine. Three different hydrogen addition fractions (0%, 2.5%, 5%) were used under five different spark timing (10° ,15° ,20° ,25° ,30° CA BTDC). Engine speed and excess air ratio stabled at 1500 rpm and 1.2 respectively. The direct injection timing of the hydrogen was optimized to form a beter stratified mixture. The obtained results demonstrated that brake power and brake thermal efficiency are increased by addition hydrogen directly injected. The BSFC is decreased with the addition of hydrogen. The peak cylinder pressure and the instantaneous heat release rate raises with the increase of the hydrogen addition fraction. In addition, the HC and CO emissions drop while the NOx emissions sharply rise with the addition of hydrogen. As a whole, with hydrogen direct injection, the power and fuel economy performance of n-butanol engine are markedly improved, harmful emissions are partly decreased.  相似文献

A four-cylinder four-stroke water-cooled gasoline engine with spark ignition is refitted to an in-cylinder injection spark-ignition hydrogen-fuelled engine, and the concept of its test apparatus is set up. The study to be reported in this paper focuses mainly on modification for its hydrogen supply system and combustion system to solve such problems as small power output and abnormal combustion in a hydrogen-fuelled engine. A fast response solenoid valve, which possesses good switch characteristics and very fast response, and its electronic control system are described. A high pressure hydrogen injector is designed to improve hydrogen jet penetration and mixture formation in the combustion chamber, and to prevent backfire occurring in the hydrogen supply pipe between the fast response valve and the combustion chamber. Ignition by spark plug is adopted and an Intel 8098 chip microprocessor is developed to control ignition and injection timing optimally. This study shows that abnormal combustion, such as backfire, pre-ignition, high pressure rise rate and knock, can be controlled and performance of the engine can be improved by means of this system.  相似文献

High power-to-weight and fuel efficiency are bounded with opposed-piston compression ignition(OPCI) engine, which makes it ideal in certain applications. In the present study, a dynamic three-dimensional CFD model was established to numerically investigate the combustion process and emission formation of a model OPCI engine with hydrogen enrichment. The simulation results indicated that a small amount of hydrogen was efficient to improve the indicated power owing to the increased in-cylinder pressure. Hydrogen tended to increase the ignition delay of diesel fuel due to both dilution and chemical effect. The burning rate of diesel fuel was apparently accelerated when mixing with hydrogen and premixed combustion became dominated. NO_x increased sharply while soot was sufficiently suppressed due to the increase of in-cylinder temperature. Preliminary modifications on diesel injection strategy including injection timing and injection pressure were conducted. It was notable that excessive delayed injection timing could reduce NO_x emission but deteriorate the indicated power which was mainly attributed to the evident decline of hydrogen combustion efficiency. This side effect could be mitigated by increasing the diesel injection pressure. Appropriate delay of injection coupled with high injection pressure was suggested to deal with trade-offs among NO_x, soot and engine power.  相似文献

Water direct injection into the cylinder is one of effective ways to suppress the combustion rate and knocking combustion in turbocharged SI engine. In this study, a detailed one-dimensional model coupled with the water direct injection was built by using the GT-Power according to the real tested hydrogen-enriched lean-burn natural gas (NG) SI engine, and validated against the experimental data. Then, a series of cases with various water injection quantity and injection timing were comprehensively investigated on the thermodynamics, combustion and emissions characteristics of the NGSI engine. The impact of the thermo-physical of the water were discussed in detailed by sweeping various water injection quantity and water injection timing. The results indicated that peak combustion pressure and peak heat release rate decreased with the increasing the water injection quantity. In addition, the 50% combustion location and peak combustion pressure location were retarded with the increasing the water injection quantity. As for the water injection timing, the peak combustion pressure and peak combustion temperature were slightly decreased with retarding the water injection timing. Apart from that, the indicated thermal efficiency decreased 4.03% and the equivalent fuel consumption increased 3.56% with injecting 60 mg water into the cylinder compared the case without water injection. Furthermore, the indicated thermal efficiency decreased 4.68% and the equivalent fuel consumption increased 4.66% by sweeping the water injection timing from the 150 CA to 50 CA before top dead center. However, the volumetric efficiency slightly ascended with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. Finally, the NOx emissions declined with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. However, CO emission and unburned HC emissions increased with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. The main aim of this paper is expected to provide a comprehensively assessment of the thermo-physical of water on the thermodynamics, combustion, and emissions of the hydrogen enriched NGSI engine.  相似文献

This paper focuses on optimizing the hydrogen TMI (timed manifold injection) system through valve lift law and hydrogen injection parameters (pressure, injection inclination and timing) in order to prevent backfire phenomena and improve the volumetric efficiency and mixture formation quality of a dual fuel diesel engine operating at high load and high hydrogen energy share. This was achieved through a numerical simulation using CFD code ANSYS Fluent, developed for a single cylinder hydrogen-diesel dual fuel engine, at constant engine speed of 1500 rpm, 90% of load and 42.5% hydrogen energy share. The developed tool was validated using experimental data. As a results, the operating conditions of maximum valve lift = 10.60 mm and inlet valve closing = 30 °CA ABDC (MVL10 IVC30) prevent the engine from backfire and pre-ignition, and ensure a high volumetric efficiency. Moreover, a hydrogen start of injection of 60 °CA ATDC (HSOI60) is appropriate to provide a pre-cooling effect and thus, reduce the pre-ignition sources and helps to quench any hot residual combustion products. While, the hydrogen injection pressure of 2.7 bar and an inclination of 60°, stimulate a better quality of hydrogen-air mixture. Afterwards, a comparison between combustion characteristics of the optimized hydrogen-diesel dual fuel mode and the baseline (diesel mode) was conducted. The result was, under dual fuel mode there is an increase in combustion characteristics and NOx emissions as well as a decrease in CO2 emissions. For further improvement of dual fuel mode, retarding diesel start of injection (DSOI) strategy was used.  相似文献
