Potential and knocking characteristics of a hydrogen-natural gas blend (HCNG) engine with a high compression ratio were examined from a commercial viewpoint since lean combustion with HCNG under a wide-open throttle (WOT) condition requires a high-charging-capacity turbocharger. Supercharging of intake air to extend the lean limit was investigated for a turbocharged, heavy-duty natural gas-fueled engine. Effects of compression ratio changes on fuel economy were assessed in terms of thermal efficiency and torque characteristics. Extension of the lean limit to an excess air ratio of 1.8 for an HCNG engine under WOT conditions is realizable using a supplementary supercharging system. Thermal efficiency improvement at high compression ratios is reduced under relatively rich mixture conditions because spark timing is retarded to avoid knocking. The excess air ratio corresponding to maximum thermal efficiency decreases to 1.6 for an HCNG engine due to the decrease in exhaust gas energy for intake-air charging.  相似文献

Because blending hydrogen with natural gas can allow the mixture to burn leaner, reducing the emission of nitrogen oxide (NOx), hydrogen blended with natural gas (HCNG) is a viable alternative to pure fossil fuels because of the effective reduction in total pollutant emissions and the increased engine efficiency. In this research, the performance and emission characteristics of an 11-L heavy duty lean burn engine using HCNG were examined, and an optimization strategy for the control of excess air ratio and of spark advance timing was assessed, in consideration of combustion stability. The thermal efficiency increased with the hydrogen addition, allowing stable combustion under leaner operating conditions. The efficiency of NOx reduction is closely related to the excess air ratio of the mixture and to the spark advance timing. With the optimization of excess air ratio and spark advance timing, HCNG can effectively reduce NOx as much as 80%.  相似文献

Energy is an essential prerequisite for economical and social growth of any country. Skyrocketing of petroleum fuel cost s in present day has led to growing interest in alternative fuels like CNG, LPG, Producer gas, Biogas in order to provide suitable substitute to diesel for a compression ignition engine. This paper discusses some experimental investigations on dual fuel operation of a 4 cylinder (turbocharged and intercooled) 62.5 kW gen-set diesel engine with hydrogen, producer gas (PG) and mixture of producer gas and hydrogen as secondary fuels. Results on brake thermal efficiency and emissions, namely, un-burnt hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and NOx are presented here. The paper also contains vital information relating to the performances of an engine at a wide range of load conditions with different gaseous fuel substitutions. When only hydrogen is used as secondary fuel, maximum increase in the brake thermal efficiency is 7% which is obtained with 20% of secondary fuel. When only producer gas is used as secondary fuel, maximum decrease in the brake thermal efficiency of 8% is obtained with 30% of secondary fuel. Compared to the neat diesel operation, proportion of un-burnt HC and CO increases, while, emission of NOx reduces in all Cases. On the other hand, when 40% of mixture of producer gas and hydrogen is used (in the ratio (60:40) as secondary fuel, brake thermal efficiency reduces marginally by 3%. Further, shortcoming of low efficiency at lower load condition in a dual fuel operation is removed when a mixture of hydrogen and producer gas is used as the secondary fuel at higher than 13% load condition. Based on the performance studied, a mixture of producer gas and hydrogen in the proportion of 60:40 may be used as a supplementary fuel for diesel conservation.  相似文献

Natural gas and hydrogen have been extensively tested in dual fuel mode in a compression ignition engine. Many studies conclude that the emissions, especially those oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are expected to form in the region around the pilot spray where high temperatures exist and the equivalence ratio is close to stoichiometric. The effect of changing the pilot fuel quantity has not been widely reported. This study investigates the effect of changing pilot fuel quantity, and type and the effect of this change on various combustion (ignition delay, in-cylinder pressure and rate of energy release) and emission (specific NOx and hydrocarbons) parameters. Dual fueling of natural gas and hydrogen exhibit an increased ignition delay compared to the ignition delay exhibited by the pilot fuel at similar operating conditions. For dual fueling cases, the ignition delay is reduced as the quantity of pilot fuel is increased.  相似文献

Hydrogen-compressed natural gas blend (HCNG) engines can extend the lean burn limit because of the wide flammability range of hydrogen. Lean combustion helps facilitate high efficiency and fundamentally reduces NOx emission. Increasing the compression ratio (CR) of an HCNG engine was reported to improve its thermal efficiency. However, the high risk of knock occurrence and the increase in NOx emission can hinder CR increase.  相似文献

The catalytic activity of single chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC-SOFCs) with respect to hydrocarbon fuels induces a major overheating of the fuel cell, temperature variations along its length, and changes in the original fuel/air composition mainly over the anode component. This paper assesses the temperature gradients and the variations in performance along electrolyte-supported Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSM cells fed with methane gas. The investigations are performed in a useful range of CH4/O2 ratios between 1.0 and 2.0, in which the furnace temperature and flow rate of methane–air mixtures are held constant at 700 °C and 450 sccm, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to sense the temperature at the location where smaller size cathodes are positioned on the opposite side of a full-size anode. Due to temperature increases, cells always perform better when the small cathodes are located at the inlet as well as at a CH4/O2 ratio of 1.0. With an increase in ratio, the results show the presence of artefacts due to the use of an active LSM material for the combustion of methane, and open-type gas distribution plates for the single chamber reactor.  相似文献

The use of hydrogen blended with natural gas is a viable alternative to pure fossil fuels because of the expected reduction of the total pollutant emissions and increase of efficiency. These blends offer a valid opportunity for tackling sustainable transportation, in view of the future stringent emission limits for road vehicles. The aim of the present paper is the investigation of the performance of internal combustion engines fuelled by such blends. A numerical investigation on the characteristics of natural gas–hydrogen blends as well as their effect on engine performance is carried out. The activity is focused on the influence of such blends on flame propagation speed. Combustion pattern modelling allows the comparison of engine brake efficiency and power output using different fuels. Results showed that there is an increase in engine efficiency only if Maximum Brake Torque (MBT) spark advance is used for each fuel. Moreover, an economic analysis has been carried out to determine the over cost of hydrogen in such blends, showing percent increments by using these fuels about between 10 and 34%.  相似文献

A naturally aspirated multi cylinder diesel genset (DG) was operated successfully with mixed fuels (fossil-diesel (FD), refined rice bran oil (RRBO) and producer gas from a wood gasifier). Performance of DG set in FD, dual fuel mode (FD+RRBO in different proportion and FD+producer gas) and mixed fuels mode (with preheated blend of 75% RRBO+FD and producer gas) at different engine load conditions are presented in this paper. Performance of DG was evaluated in terms of specific energy consumption (SEC), brake thermal efficiency, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas composition. Study revealed that blends containing up to 75% RRBO with FD could be used as engine fuel without any adverse effect on the engine. The blend of RRBO and FD was preheated to 60 °C before use in the compression ignition (CI) engine. In general, exhaust gas temperature and SEC increased in all the three modes compared to FD. However, break thermal efficiency decreased. It may be due to lower calorific value of RRBO and producer gas.It was observed that at 84% engine load having 18.4:1 compression ratio (CR) and operating in dual fuel mode (FD+producer gas), the concentration of pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reduced by 55%, 19.7%, 82% and 83%, respectively, while hydrocarbon (HC) increased by 67.2% as compared to FD. Similarly at 84% engine load having 17:1 CR and operating in dual fuel mode (FD+RRBO), the concentration of pollutant like CO, CO2 and HC reduced by 60%, 0.86% and 91%, respectively. However, NOx increased by 23.48% as compared to FD.In mixed fuel mode (preheated blends of RRBO+FD in the proportion of 3:1 and producer gas) at 84% engine load having 18.4:1 CR, the concentration of pollutants like HC, NO and NO2 reduced by 48.28%, 61.57% and 80.48%, respectively, while CO increased by 16.31% as compared to FD. In addition to the findings on environmental aspects, the study also proved that the diesel engine could be run safely in mixed fuel mode (53% producer gas, rest RRBO and FD at the ratio of 3:1 and heated at 60 °C).  相似文献

Water management of proton exchange membrane fuel cells remains a prominent issue in research concerning fuel cells. In this study, the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a fuel cell is partially treated with a hydrophobic agent, and the effect of GDL hydrophobicity on the water distribution in the fuel cell is examined. First, the effect of the position of the cathode GDL hydrophobic area relative to the channel on the fuel cell performance is investigated. Then, the water distribution in the fuel cell cathode GDL is observed using X-ray imaging. The experimental results indicate that when the hybrid GDL's hydrophobic area lies on the channel, water tends to accumulate under the rib, and the water content in the channel is low; this improves the fuel cell performance. When the hydrophobic area is under the rib, the water distribution is more uniform, but the performance deteriorates.  相似文献

Control emission pollution associated with oil combustion is a major concern of researchers worldwide. A blend of HHO has been introduced to the combustion elements to reduce emission and drive the combustion reaction toward stoichiometric condition. HHO fuel production unit based on an electrolysis process has been designed and built with an ability to alter Anode-Cathode plate's inter-distances and integrated to Honda G 200 (197 cc single cylinder engine). The gap between the plates was adjusted to 3, 5, 7 and 10 mm. Tests reveal that mixing HHO, air, and gasoline cause an enhancement in engine performance and emissions. The emission tests have been done with varying the engine speed and preserve the electrolyte concentration and temperature. The results show that enhancement in combustion characteristics is strongly affected by the gap between cell plates. The maximum produced power and minimum fuel consumption were associated with the case of 10 mm cathode-anode plates distance where hydrocarbons (HCs) and carbon monoxide emissions have been reduced to about 40% at different operating speeds. Whereas, 5 mm gap case has the highest impact on emission reduction.  相似文献

The effect of gas diffusion medium (GDM) intrusion on the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is investigated. The mechanical behaviors of various GDM are characterized in compressive, flexural, and shear tests. The results are used in a numerical model to calculate the channel intrusion of GDM. The intrusion calculation from the numerical model agrees well with the measurements from an intrusion measurement setup and a pressure drop measurement device for various GDM. A simplified reactant flow redistribution model of parallel channels developed in this study suggests that a 5% variation in GDM intrusion can result in a 20% reduction of reactant flow in the most intruded channel. The GDM intrusion and intrusion variation are found to induce significant performance discrepancy among cells of a 30-cell automotive fuel cell stack consisting of two different production lots of commercial GDM. The study suggests that in the future mass production of fuel cell stacks, GDM manufacturers need to greatly tighten their product variations in mechanical property and thickness to ensure reliable PEM fuel cell operations.  相似文献

Converting coal to natural gas may be one of the alternative solutions for satisfying the demand for natural gas. However, synthetic natural gas (SNG) has not been proven effective in natural gas-fired power plants. In this research, several combustion tests using a diffusion type combustor were conducted to determine the effect of hydrogen content in SNG on gas turbine combustion. Three kinds of SNG with different H2 content up to 3%vol were used for the combustion tests. Even a small amount of hydrogen in SNG affects the flame structure: it shortened the flame length and enlarged the flame angle slightly. However, hydrogen content up to 3% in SNG did not affect the gas turbine combustion characteristics, which are emission performance and combustion efficiency. Due to a similarity with real gas turbine combustor conditions for power generation, a high pressure combustion test helped us verify the ambient pressure combustion tests conducted to determine the effect of hydrogen in SNG. In the high pressure combustion test, the pattern factors were identical even though the hydrogen content was varied from 0% to 3%.  相似文献

The effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on combustion and emissions under different hydrogen ratios were studied based on an engine with a gasoline intake port injection and hydrogen direct injection. The peak cylinder pressure increases by 9.8% in the presence of a small amount of hydrogen. The heat release from combustion is more concentrated, and the engine torque can increase by 11% with a small amount of hydrogen addition. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions can be reduced by EGR dilution. Hydrogen addition offsets the blocking effect of EGR on combustion partially, therefore, hydrogen addition permits a higher original engine EGR rate, and yields a larger throttle opening, which improves the mechanical efficiency and decreases NOx emissions by 54.8% compared with the original engine. The effects of EGR on carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions are not obvious and CO and HC emissions can be reduced sharply with hydrogen addition. CO, HC, and NOx emissions can be controlled at a lower level, engine output torque can be increased, and fuel consumption can be reduced significantly with the co-control of hydrogen addition and EGR in a hydrogen gasoline engine.  相似文献

A fuel cell configuration using alkaline NaBH4–N2H4 solutions as the fuel is suggested. Gas evolution behaviors and cell performances of alkaline NaBH4–N2H4 solutions on different catalysts have been studied. It is found that gas evolution behaviors are influenced by the applied anodic catalysts and the concentration of NaBH4 and N2H4. NaBH4 is mainly electro-oxidized on Pd but N2H4 is mainly electro-oxidized on Ni and surface-treated Zr–Ni alloy when using NaBH4–N2H4 solutions as the fuel and a composite of Pd, Ni and surface-treated Zr–Ni alloy as the anodic catalyst. The cyclic voltammetry results show that electrochemical oxidation potential of NaBH4 is higher than that of N2H4. Adding hydrazine into alkaline sodium borohydride solutions can suppress gas evolution and improve the cell performance of the DBFC. The performances of fuel cells using NaBH4–N2H4 solutions are comparable to that of fuel cell using N2H4 solution.  相似文献

With the increasing concern regarding diesel vehicle emissions and the rising cost of the liquid diesel fuel as well, more conventional diesel engines internationally are pursuing the option of converting to use natural gas as a supplement for the conventional diesel fuel (dual fuel natural gas/diesel engines). The most common natural gas/diesel operating mode is referred to as the pilot ignited natural gas diesel engine (PINGDE) where most of the engine power output is provided by the gaseous fuel while a pilot amount of the liquid diesel fuel injected near the end of the compression stroke is used only as an ignition source of the gaseous fuel–air mixture. The specific engine operating mode, in comparison with conventional diesel fuel operation, suffers from low brake engine efficiency and high carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. In order to be examined the effect of increased air inlet temperature combined with increased pilot fuel quantity on performance and exhaust emissions of a PINGD engine, a theoretical investigation has been conducted by applying a comprehensive two-zone phenomenological model on a high-speed, pilot ignited, natural gas diesel engine located at the authors' laboratory. The main objectives of the present work are to record the variation of the relative impact each one of the above mentioned parameters has on performance and exhaust emissions and also to reveal the advantages and disadvantages each one of the proposed method. It becomes more necessary at high engine load conditions where the simultaneous increase of the specific engine parameters may lead to undesirable results with nitric oxide emissions.  相似文献

Through experiments conducted on a single cylinder direct injection (DI) diesel engine, effects of exhaust gas recirculatoin (EGR) on combustion and emission during cold start were investigated. Combustion of first firing cycle can be promoted significantly by introducing EGR. In experiments, when partially closed choking valve and partially or fully opened EGR valve, peak cylinder pressure of first firing cycle was about 45% higher than that under normal condition without EGR, and the start of combustion (SOC) was also much earlier. EGR also had effects on combustion stability. In the case, which kept 50% or 100% opening of EGR valve (OEV) and kept 100% opening of choking valve (OCV), more stable combustion process was achieved when common rail pressure decreased during cold start. However, excessive amount of EGR led to extreme unstable combustion and even misfiring. Opacity and NO emissions were also analyzed in detail. In the case with maximum EGR, the lowest average opacity, which was less than 4%, was achieved during initial several firing cycles of cold start. But in the later phase, excessive amount of EGR led to a great deal of white smoke emission. NO emission during initial phase of cold start is mainly affected by increase in fuel amount of injection. When combustion became stable gradually, EGR showed significant effect on NO reduction.  相似文献

The present study applied Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for examining the transport of liquid water in a GDL carbonic paper of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The stochastic method is used for GDL carbonic paper reconstruction. In order to study the behavior of liquid water, different simulations are carried out on the reconstructed GDL. While removing from the GDL of a PEM fuel cell, the dynamics of liquid water is simulated by LBM in this study. The effects that the wettability of GDL imposes on the removal process and liquid water distribution are investigated. In addition, the dynamic behaviors and the saturation process of the liquid water in GDL in a steady state and a transient mode are also explored. The effects of surface wettability on the effective clusters in GDL, merging of different clusters and the loops developed by the fingers are investigated. Moreover, the effects of mixed wettability on the liquid water dynamic behavior and liquid water saturation within the GDL are studied in detail. The results show that the best location for insertion of the hydrophilic layer inside the GDL is near the GDL-GC interface. In this case, the time required for liquid water to reach the GDL/GC interface is reduced about 17% than purely hydrophobic GDL. A decrease of 18.7% in the steady-state saturation level is also observed by insertion of hydrophilic layer; therefore, use of hydrophilic layer near GDL-GC interface is more effective than increasing the contact angle of GDL-fibers. Different validation studies are also reported to show the accuracy of the model.  相似文献

The fact that fossil fuels, which supply a large amount of the energy need, are limited in the world and can be only found in certain regions, have led humankind to seek alternatives. In addition, the use of fossil fuels generates wastes detrimental to humans and nature, which has led this search to alternative, clean and renewable energy sources. The use of hydrogen, which is a clean energy source, in internal combustion engines is very important in terms of reducing emission values as well as providing an alternative to petroleum-derived fuels. This study presents a literature review on the effect of the hydrogen ratio and combustion chamber geometry on the engine performance and emissions in a compression-ignition engine operating in the hydrogen diesel bi-fuel mode. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the hydrogen energy ratio should be between 5 and 20% and the combustion chamber should be designed by considering the combustion characteristics. The main purpose of the study is to highlight the functionality of the use of hydrogen in dual fuel mode in compression ignition engines and to be a resource for researchers who will work on this subject.  相似文献

The availability (exergy) balance during combustion of hydrogen-enriched natural and landfill gas, which are used as fuels in combustion engine cylinders, is studied computationally using a zero-dimensional model of the closed part of the cycle. The main focus is on the demonstration of a fundamental difference in the generation of irreversibility during combustion between hydrogen and hydrocarbons. This difference relates to the mechanisms of entropy generation during the oxidation reaction of the two fuels and yields the particularly attractive characteristic of a monotonic decrease in combustion irreversibility with increasing hydrogen content of the fuel, for mole fractions of hydrogen smaller than 10%. This reduction in combustion irreversibility is reflected in an increase in second law efficiency with increasing proportions of hydrogen. The exhaust gas availability at the end of the closed part of the cycle was found to have a local maximum for a hydrogen mole fraction of the order of 5%. These trends with respect to hydrogen also apply when the fuel is diluted with a significant amount of CO2 (of the order of 40%, as for example in the case for landfill gas), although the absolute value of each of the terms of the availability balance is affected strongly by the dilution.  相似文献

This study focused on novel cathode structures to increase power generation and organic substrate removal in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Three types of cathode structures, including two-layer (gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer (CL)), three-layer (GDL, micro porous layer (MPL) and CL), and multi-layer (GDL, CL, carbon based layer (CBL) and hydrophobic layers) structures were examined and compared in single-chamber MFCs (SCMFCs). The results showed that the three-layer (3L) cathode structures had lower water loss than other cathodes and had a high power density (501 mW/m2). The MPL in the 3L cathode structure prevented biofilm penetration into the cathode structure, which facilitated the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. The SCMFCs with the 3L cathodes had a low ohmic resistance (Rohmic: 26-34 Ω) and a high cathode open circuit potential (OCP: 191 mV). The organic substrate removal efficiency (71-78%) in the SCMFCs with 3L cathodes was higher than the SCMFCs with two-layer and multi-layer cathodes (49-68%). This study demonstrated that inserting the MPL between CL and GDL substantially enhanced the overall electrical conduction, power generation and organic substrate removal in MFCs by reducing water loss and preventing biofilm infiltration into the cathode structure.  相似文献
