This study explores the relationship between job salisfaction and the daily usage of visual display units (VDUs). A negative correlation is found to exist between job satisfaction and utilization of the VDU. Workers who have utilized the VDU alone for data entry were more satisfied with their jobs than those workers who had used the key punch for data entry and then switched to the VDU, although they said they preferred the VDU over the key punch. The following model was found to be statistically significant:

The synthesis methodology developed by Kimura (1985) based on the design theory of output regulators essentially due to Wonham (1974) has been applied successfully to the flatness control system for a 6-high cold rolling mill. The system has the following remarkable features.

1. (1) The structure of the controller is simple. This makes it easy to tune the control system.

2. (2) The controller copes well with the detection time delay, and thus high performance is obtained even at a low rolling speed.

3. (3) The flatness error caused by the rolling force variation in mill acceleration and deceleration time would be kept to a minimum by the function to adjust roll bending force using the signal of rolling force.

A number of algorithms are presented for obtaining power series expansions of curves and surfaces at a point. Some results on the radius of convergence are given. Two applications of series are given:

This paper is the first in a new annual series whose goal is to answer the following question: what are the active research focuses within the field of software engineering? We considered 7 top journals and 7 top international conferences in software engineering and examined all the 691 papers published in these journals or presented at these conferences in 2006. Consequently, we have a number of findings.
(1) Seventy-three percent of journal papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), Management (D.2.9), and Software/Program Verification (D.2.4).

(2) Eighty-nine percent of conference papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Software/Program Verification (D.2.4), Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), and Design Tools and Techniques (D.2.2).

(3) Seventy-seven percent of journal/conference papers focus on 20% of subject indexes in software engineering, including Testing and Debugging (D.2.5), Software/Program Verification (D.2.4), and Management (D.2.9).

(4) The average number of references cited by a journal paper is about 33, whereas this number becomes around 24 for a conference paper.

The Dual Calculus, proposed recently by Wadler, is the outcome of two distinct lines of research in theoretical computer science:
(A) Efforts to extend the Curry–Howard isomorphism, established between the simply-typed lambda calculus and intuitionistic logic, to classical logic.

(B) Efforts to establish the tacit conjecture that call-by-value (CBV) reduction in lambda calculus is dual to call-by-name (CBN) reduction.

This paper initially investigates relations of the Dual Calculus to other calculi, namely the simply-typed lambda calculus and the Symmetric lambda calculus. Moreover, Church–Rosser and Strong Normalization properties are proven for the calculus’ CBV reduction relation. Finally, extensions of the calculus to second-order types are briefly introduced.

This paper reports on the innovative, now defunct, Volvo Uddevalla final assembly plant. Theoretical frames of reference, the design process and empirical data on work group characteristics and working conditions are focused upon.

Information regarding the Uddevalla plant has been gathered during a long-term co-operation project with the Volvo Corporation. During the closing-down period we obtained full access to all the production engineering data and personnel files available. We also had the opportunity of studying the responses to a questionnaire distributed to a random sample of blue-collar workers.

Working conditions in Uddevalla in the form of psychosocial job factors are compared with industrial blue-collar workers in general as well as with assembly workers in the closed down Volvo Kalmar final assembly plant, which had a different, more traditional, production system. The paper also compares the psychosocial job factors, performance measures and work-group characteristics in the five assembly workshops in the Uddevalla plant.

In comparing assembly workshops, the paper contrasts two approaches to competence development and work structuring used in Uddevalla, namely (1) giving priority to individual in-depth training of a specific task or (2) giving priority to a large competence overlap between individuals in a work group.

Relevance to industry

This paper reports and explains some results from a multidisciplinary evaluation of shop-floor work in the Volvo Uddevalla plant, a full-scale assembly plant with parallellized flow and long cycle time, using autonomous work groups. These experiences should be of general interest to industries searching for the factory of the future.  相似文献

Naira is a compiler for Haskell, written in Glasgow parallel Haskell. It exhibits modest, but irregular, parallelism that is determined by properties of the program being compiled, e.g. the complexity of the types and of the pattern matching. We report four experiments into Naira's parallel behaviour using a set of realistic inputs: namely the 18 Haskell modules of Naira itself. The issues investigated are:

• Does increasing input size improve sequential efficiency and speedup?

• To what extent do high communications latencies reduce average parallelism and speedup?

• Does migrating running threads between processors improve average parallelism and speedup at all latencies?

Sixty-two workers engaged in computer-telephone interactive tasks in an active telemarketing center and a telephone call center of an international bank subsidiary in S?o Paulo. Brazil, were assessed by means of a work analysis and a self-administered questionnaire aiming to determine the statistical relationship of ergonomic, organizational and psychosocial characteristics of their jobs with the report of symptoms in neck-shoulder and hand-wrist for more than 7 consecutive days and any time away from work during the current job due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). According to chi-square univariate tests and multiple logistic regression models, active telemarketing operations, duration in the job and the low level of satisfaction with the physical arrangement of the workstation emerged as the factors most related to neck-shoulder and hand-wrist MSD and MSD-induced time away from work. This study emphasizes the role of psychosocial factors and duration in the job in MSD occurrence and induced absenteeism among workers engaged in computer-telephone interactive tasks.  相似文献

We explore the performance of an M/GI/1 queue under various scheduling policies from the perspective of a new metric: the slowdown experienced by the largest jobs. We consider scheduling policies that bias against large jobs, towards large jobs, and those that are fair, e.g., processor-sharing (PS). We prove that as job size increases to infinity, all work conserving policies converge almost surely with respect to this metric to no more than 1/(1−ρ), where ρ denotes the load. We also find that the expected slowdown under any work conserving policy can be made arbitrarily close to that under PS, for all job sizes that are sufficiently large.  相似文献

High-demand jobs include 'specific' job demands that are not preventable with state of the art ergonomics knowledge and may overburden the bodily capacities, safety or health of workers. An interesting question is whether the age of the worker is an important factor in explanations of diversity in work ability in the context of high-demand jobs. In this paper, the work ability of ageing workers is addressed according to aspects of diversity in specific job demands and the research methods that are needed to shed light upon the relevant associated questions. From the international literature, a body of evidence was elicited concerning rates of chronological ageing in distinct bodily systems and functions. Intra-age-cohort differences in capacities and work ability, however, require (not yet existing) valid estimates of functional age or biological age indices for the specific populations of workers in high-demand jobs. Many studies have drawn on the highly demanding work of fire-fighters, ambulance workers, police officers, medical specialists, pilots/astronauts and submarine officers. Specific job demands in these jobs can be physical, mental or psychosocial in origin but may cause combined task-level loadings. Therefore, the assessment of single demands probably will not reveal enough relevant information about work ability in high-demand jobs and there will be a call for more integrated measures. Existing studies have used a variety of methodologies to address parts of the issue: task analyses for quantifying physical work demands, observations of psychological and physiological parameters, measures of psychosocial work demands and health complaints. Specific details about the work ability of ageing workers in high-demand jobs are scarce. In general, specific demands are more likely to overtax the capacities of older workers than those of younger workers in high-demand jobs, implying greater repercussions for health, although these effects also vary considerably within age cohorts. Functional tests for job-specific work ability should be developed for high-demand jobs in order to monitor individual functional ageing and to facilitate well-timed intervention. It is concluded that a shift from 'no-diversity thinking' to 'diversity thinking' is needed in the context of deciding about the work ability of ageing workers in high-demand jobs.  相似文献

A one-page checklist for determining the presence of ergonomic risk factors associateed with awkward postures of the lower extremities, trunk and neck was developed and evaluated as part of a joint labor-management ergonomics intervention program. This checklist was used by plant personnel at four work sites to assess the postural requirements on 335 cyclical (i.e., work-cycle duration less than five minutes) manufacturing and warehouse jobs. In addition, results generated by the checklist were compared to the results of ergonomic analyses performed by persons with advanced training in occupational ergonomics.

Workers were observed using awkward postures for most of the jobs in the survey. Awkward postures of the lower extrimities were relatively uncommon, occuring in 25 percent or less of the jobs. Awkward postures of the trunk and neck were common, occuring in more than 70 percent of the jobs. Results generated by the checklist were generally in agreement with results generated by the experienced ergonomists; however, the checklist was found to be more sensitive in identifying the presence of awkward postures.

The checklist was found to be an effective rapid-screening instrument for identifying cyclical jobs that expose workers to potentially harmful postures. However, the checklist methodology did not include sufficient documentation of work methods to identify the specific job attributes associated with these exposures. Furthermore, the checklist was not used to evaluate non-cyclical jobs (e.g., maintenance and skilled trades).  相似文献

This study investigates different autonomous job rotation types to analyze their impacts on productivity, accident rate, and worker's satisfaction. The subjects of research were 422 assembly‐line units in 3 production plants from an automobile company. The preferred rotation types and workers’ satisfaction scores in the 422 units were surveyed by the average worker's experience and work productivity, quality and accident rate scores were traced over a 5‐year period. Results showed that workers with little work experience preferred to work in shorter cycles composed of a small variety of tasks, whereas workers with more experience preferred longer cycles composed of a larger variety of tasks. In addition, autonomously chosen rotation systems proved to boost productivity and work satisfaction when compared to units that did not implement job rotation. In contrast, only 4 out of 10 rotation types showed improvements in decreased number of accidents. Of the 10 rotation types, ones with daily cycles with a small range of tasks and weekly cycles with a wide range of tasks displayed the most promising results for productivity, work satisfaction, and accident prevention. This study implies that the preferred types of rotation do not necessarily lead to higher productivity, safety, and satisfaction. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basic guideline for job design.  相似文献

The recent growth of service industries as well as the rise of e-commerce has increased the number of online customer service workers. Research on face-to-face service work has shown that these workers are expected to display certain emotions in the course of their work, a phenomenon known as emotional labor. However, little is known about emotional communication among online customer service workers. We explored emotional labor in an online context by examining the degree of emotional presence in mediated service interactions and its relationship with workers' acting strategies (i.e., surface acting, deep acting). Further, we examined if emotional presence and acting strategies predict job satisfaction as well as burnout. Data collected from 130 online customer service workers indicated that they perceive the highest emotional presence in phone conversations, followed by email and chat. Although there was little relationship between emotional presence and acting strategies, those who engage in surface acting are less satisfied with their job and more likely to experience burnout. In addition, those who feel a higher degree of emotional presence over the phone tend to experience higher job satisfaction and less burnout. These findings suggest that online customer service workers also engage in emotional labor.  相似文献

This paper deals with ideas that could form a basis for manufacturing integration. In recent times more attention is being paid to the idea of applying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to manufacturing. However, very little attention is being paid to the proper use of these techniques. This research work explores three basic ideas:

1. 1. Applications of the entity-relationship approach to knowledge representation.

2. 2. The basic philosophy of expert database systems and

3. 3. Integration of manufacturing systems from the above two concepts.

The approaches for 1 and 2 are explained with actual implementation experiences, while a framework for integration is proposed from a more philosophical perspective.  相似文献

Postures and muscle activity in the upper body were recorded from 50 academics office workers during 2 hours of normal work, categorised by observation into computer work (CW) and three non-computer (NC) tasks (NC seated work, NC standing/walking work and breaks). NC tasks differed significantly in exposures from CW, with standing/walking NC tasks representing the largest contrasts for most of the exposure variables. For the majority of workers, exposure variability was larger in their present job than in CW alone, as measured by the job variance ratio (JVR), i.e. the ratio between min–min variabilities in the job and in CW. Calculations of JVRs for simulated jobs containing different proportions of CW showed that variability could, indeed, be increased by redistributing available tasks, but that substantial increases could only be achieved by introducing more vigorous tasks in the job, in casu illustrated by cleaning.  相似文献

With the growth of factory automation, the need for off-line robot programming is increasing rapidly. Off-line programming requires a robot simulator. This is the reason for the development of a TIPS/GS (Geometric Simulator), accompanied by a robot simulator. TIPS/GS has been developed as a project in the TIPS Research Association. The goal of this project is to extend the functions and applications of the solid modeler TIPS-1. Four simulators (i.e. the assembly simulator, engineering, NC simulator and robot simulator) have been developed for these extended applications.

The robot simulator described in this paper has the following special features:

• • When a robot motion is prescribed by the VAL-G language, the result can be seen on a CRT display in several patterns.

• • High-speed dynamic display which can almost keep up with real-time movements.

• • A shaded as well as wire-frame picture is used for the high-speed display entioned above.

• • Supported by the solid modeler, any robot and environment can be used with this system.

• • The preparation of a precise interference checker based on an analytical methods.

A procedure is proposed to solve the multiple attributes and multiple hierarchical system under fuzzy environment. The approach is based on:

1. (1) fuzzy representation;

2. (2) hierarchical performance evaluation structure,

3. (3) gradient eigenvector method for rating the fuzzy criteria weighting, and

4. (4) using the max-min paired elimination method for aggregation.

To illustrate the approach, an example on the evaluation of teaching performance in higher education is solved.  相似文献

The relationships between work organisational, biomechanical and psychosocial factors were studied using cross-sectional data from a pooled dataset of 1834 participants. The work organisational factors included: job rotation, overtime work, having second jobs and work pace. Task and job level biomechanical variables were obtained through sub-task data collected in the field or analysed in the laboratory. Psychosocial variables were collected based on responses to 10 questions. The results showed that job rotations had significant effects on all biomechanical and most psychosocial measures. Those with job rotations generally had higher job biomechanical stressors, and lower job satisfaction. Overtime work was associated with higher job biomechanical stressors, and possibly self-reported physical exhaustion. Those having second jobs reported getting along with co-workers well. Work pace had significant influences on all biomechanical stressors, but its impact on job biomechanical stressors and psychosocial effects are complicated.

Practitioner Summary: The findings are based on a large number of subjects collected by three research teams in diverse US workplaces. Job rotation practices used in many workplaces may not be effective in reducing job biomechanical stressors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Overtime work is also associated with higher biomechanical stressors.  相似文献

Abstract

A pre- and post-renovation survey evaluated the reactions of office workers to two office lighting systems: a parabolic downlighting system and a ceiling suspended, lensed-indirect uplighting system. Questionnaire data on work content, perception of ambient environmental conditions (including office lighting), work-related health symptoms, job stress, job satisfaction, and self-reported productivity, and environmental data on illumination, air temperature, and relative humidity were collected. The lensed-indirect lighting system was more favourably rated on several subjective lighting impressions scales, and for computer work workers reported fewer screen glare problems, and fewer and less frequent problems with tired eyes and eye focusing. Productivity was less hindered by the lensed-indirect lighting, and satisfaction with office lighting and ratings of lighting quality were significantly higher for this system. These reactions were not associated with any differences in levels of illumination between the lighting systems. Ratings of lighting satisfaction and lighting importance were inversely related. Overall, some two-thirds of workers indicated a preference for working under the lensed-indirect lighting system.  相似文献
