The stress exponent of steady state creep,n, and the internal ( i) and effective stresses ( e) have been determined using the strain transient dip test for a series of polycrystalline Al-Mg alloys creep tested at 300° C and compared with previously published data. The internal or dislocation back stress, i, varied with applied stress,, but was insensitive to magnesium content of the alloy, being represented by the empirical equation i=1.084 1.802. Such an applied stress dependence of i can be explained by using an equation for i of the form i (dislocation density)1/2 and published values for the stress dependence of dislocation density. Values of the friction stress, f, derived using the equation e/=(1–c) (1– f/), indicate that f is not dependent on the magnesium content. A constant value of f can best be rationalized by postulating that the creep dislocation structure is relatively insensitive to the magnesium content of the alloy. On leave from Engineering Materials Department, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4, Canada.

The creep of uranium dioxide has been investigated as a function of grain size. At high stresses, when creep is controlled by dislocation movement, grain boundaries exert a strengthening effect and this strengthening is correlated with the Hall-Petch equation. The degree of strengthening diminishes with increases in temperature. At lower stresses, when creep is controlled by mass transport, grain boundaries exert a weakening effect owing to the reduction in diffusion path length as grain size is reduced. In this range behaviour is correlated with the Nabarro-Herring equation with stress replaced by an effective stress E=–0 where 0 is a threshold stress for diffusional creep associated with the limitation of the ability of boundaries to emit and absorb vacancies. 0 appears to decrease as grain size is increased.

The two-site model is developed for the analysis of stress relaxation data. It is shown that the product of d In (– )/d and (- i) is constant where is the applied stress, i is the (deformation-induced) internal stress and = d/dt. The quantity d In ( )/d is often presented in the literature as the (experimental) activation volume, and there are many examples in which the above relationship with (- i) holds true. This is in apparent contradiction to the arguments that lead to the association of the quantity d In (– )/d with the activation volume, since these normally start with the premise that the activation volume is independent of stress. In the modified theory presented here the source of this anomaly is apparent. Similar anomalies arise in the estimation of activation volume from creep or constant strain rate tests and these are also examined from the standpoint of the site model theory. In the derivation presented here full account is taken of the site population distribution and this is the major difference compared to most other analyses. The predicted behaviour is identical to that obtained with the standard linear solid. Consideration is also given to the orientation-dependence of stress-aided activation.

The tensile stress relaxation behaviour of hot-drawn low density polyethylene, (LDPE), has been investigated at room temperature at various draw ratios. The drawing was performed at 85° C. The main result was an increase in relaxation rate in the draw direction, especially at low draw ratios when compared to the relaxation behaviour of the isotropic material. This is attributed to a lowering of the internal stress. The position of the relaxation curves along the log time axis was also changed as a result of the drawing, corresponding to a shift to shorter times. The activation volume, , varied with the initial effective stress 0 * according to 0 * 10kT, where 0 * =0i, is the difference between the applied initial stress, 0, and the internal stress i. This result supports earlier findings relating to similarities in the stress relaxation behaviour of different solids.

The square of the ratio of the abraded bending strength, d, to the unabraded bending strength, , is proposed as a measure of the resistance to crack propagation in ceramic materials. Data for various porcelains, glass-ceramics, and glasses showed that d is essentially constant and that (d/)2 decreased rapidly with increase of the unabraded strength.

Deformation of a carbon-epoxy composite under hydrostatic pressure
This paper describes the behaviour of a carbon-fibre reinforced epoxy composite when deformed in compression under high hydrostatic confining pressures. The composite consisted of 36% by volume of continuous fibres of Modmur Type II embedded in Epikote 828 epoxy resin. When deformed under pressures of less than 100 MPa the composite failed by longitudinal splitting, but splitting was suppressed at higher pressures (up to 500 MPa) and failure was by kinking. The failure strength of the composite increased rapidly with increasing confining pressure, though the elastic modulus remained constant. This suggests that the pressure effects were introduced by fracture processes. Microscopical examination of the kinked structures showed that the carbon fibres in the kink bands were broken into many fairly uniform short lengths. A model for kinking in the composite is suggested which involves the buckling and fracture of the carbon fibres.List of symbols d diameter of fibre - E f elastic modulus of fibre - E m elastic modulus of epoxy - G m shear modulus of epoxy - k radius of gyration of fibre section - l length of buckle in fibre - P confining pressure (= 2 = 3) - R radius of bent fibre - V f volume fraction of fibres in composite - t, c bending strains in fibres - angle between the plane of fracture and 1 - 1 principal stress - 3 confining pressure - c strength of composite - f strength of fibre in buckling mode - n normal stress on a fracture plane - m strength of epoxy matrix - shear stress - tangent slope of Mohr envelope - slope of pressure versus strength curves in Figs. 3 and 4.

Measurements have been made on the mechanical properties of largediameter tubes made of 09G2S, 14G2SAF, and 17G1S steels and on welded joints in them at strain rates of 200 sec–1 and 113–293 K. Fivefold microspecimens 1.2 mm in diameter have been employed. The parameters have been determined in the temperature-rate dependence of the Yaroshevich yield point, lower brittleness temperature, and fracture resistance as affected by the ferrite diameter. A method is proposed for predicting the brittleness range from the dependence of the notch bottom narrowing B on the generalized parameter = Sf/yt/i for a Menaget specimen.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 4, pp. 43–50, April, 1994.

Steady-state creep behaviour of a 25 wt % Cr-20 wt % Ni stainless steel without precipitates was studied in the stress range 9.8 to 39.2 MPa at temperatures between 1133 and 1193 K. The results of stress-drop tests indicate that, in the steady-state creep region, diffusion-controlled recovery creep is dominant. Such recovery creep can be accounted for in terms of the composition of the internal stress, i=s+c, except in the case of fine-grained specimens where d<80 m, whered is the mean grain diameter, s is possible to reduce easily and is comparable to the driving stress for creep, and c is the persistent stress field due to metastable substructure. In the fine-grained specimens, it is suggested that the steady-state creep is dominantly controlled by grain boundaries.

Rayleigh's method is used to find the electric potentials of a composite of poly-dispered spherical particles in a linear continuum in an external electric field. Based on the solutions of potentials, analytical formula for the effective electric conductivity is derived. Based on the formula, several factors, such as the number of spherical inclusions, the spatial distribution of the spheres, the contrast ratio i / h (where, i and h are the conductivities of the spherical inclusion and the host medium, respectively) and volume fraction of the inclusions, are discussed. Our results show that at high volume fraction, the effective conductivity is also affected by the spatial distribution of the inclusions.

An energy eigenvalue equation for a quasi-particle is derived, starting with the Heisenberg equation of motion for an annihilation operator. An elementary derivation of the Fermi liquid model having a sharply defined Fermi surface in thek-space is given, starting with a realistic model of a metal including the Coulomb interaction amongand between electrons and lattice-ions. The Ginzburg-Landau wave function (r), where represents the superconducting pairon (Cooper-pair) state, is shown to be connected with the one-pairon density operatorn by (r) = r¦n 1/2¦. A close analogy between supercurrent and laser is indicated. On sabbatical leave from Department of Physics and Astronomy, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York.

The report considers the stress fatigue limit D, the fatigue to tensile strength ratio D/Rm, and the deformation fatigue limit D of pure metals. For FCC and some HCP metals there exists a linear correlation between fatigue limit and tensile strength. The fatigue limit and the fatigue ratio D/Rm depend upon the homologous temperature. The fatigue ratios of BCC metals are higher than the fatigue ratios of other metals at room temperature as is also true for metals with nearly the same homologous temperature. The deformation fatigue limit decreases rapidly when Th - 0.5 and Th 1. When Th = 1 then D = 0, D = 0 and D/Rm = 0. The deformation fatigue limits of metals belonging to the same subgroup of the periodic element system and having, similar homologous temperatures at room temperature are very similar.

Measurements of the dynamic tensile strength of HR-2 (Cr-Ni-Mn-N) stainless steel have been carried out over the initial temperature range of 300 K–1000 K at shock stress of 8 GPa, the corresponding spall strength f and Hugoniot elastic limit HEL are determined from the wave profiles. In the temperature range of 300 K–806 K, f and HEL decrease linearly with increasing temperature T, i.e., f = 5.63-4.32 × 10–3T, HEL = 2.08-1.54 × 10–3T, but when heated to 980 K, HEL increases from 0.84 GPa at 806 K to 0.93 GPa at 980 K and f keeps at an almost fixed value of 2.15 GPa. The TEM analysis on recovery samples identified the existence of intermatallic compound Ni3Al and the carbide Cr23C6 in the sample of 806 K, another intermatallic compound Ni3Ti was found in the sample of 980 K. All these products emerge along crystal boundary. While no such products were found in the samples of 300 K and 650 K.

It is shown that the combination of two components with different strengths and degrees of work-hardening produces a new material with a new degree of work-hardening, which may be determined by the present analysis. Conclusion An analysis of the problem concerning the interaction of moving single formations (bubbles and drops) with the surrounding carrying medium shows the possibility of describing real physical processes within the frameworks of the models of ideal and viscous liquids. Generalization of experimental and theoretical data is made by constructing charts of flow modes. A successful selection of the dimensionless numbersR andR as coordinates made it possible to arrange in an ordered fashion in the diagram all of the media by means of the parameter M, with the data for each specific medium being located on a certain straight line whose slope is determined by M. Vast computational data both of the present author and of other investigators for the region of small and intermediate values of dimensionless parameters, converted into theR ,R functions, made it possible to fully display the region inaccessible for investigation when the effect of all the parameters is significant and their number cannot be reduced. The use of these very parameters for correlating the data of the problem of steady rise of a drop made it possible to simply demonstrate the influence both of the presence of the medium itself and its motion on the drop rise. Comparison of the data with the problem of bubble rise can be made by simple superposition of diagrams. The logical clarity of the parametersR , which is equal to the ratio of the equivalent radiusa of a bubble (drop) to the capillary constant of the surrounding medium , allowed the determination of a certain critical sizea after which waves appear on the surface at the back side of the bubble (drop) when the value ofa is higher than 2-3. Another form of instability of steady rise is associated with the formation of a stagnant zone and with the separation of flow from the surface of a bubble or drop characteristic for surrounding media with small values of M. The use of the parametersR andR will definitely significantly simplify the analysis of more complex problems, for example, the problems of the motion of bubbles and drops in tubes with liquid and also the change in the external conditions (reduced or increased gravitation).Institute of Thermophysics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk. AC electrical properties of 410 nm think 30 at.wt% Cu-70 at.wt% GeO2 thin films are reported for the frequency range 104 to 106 Hz and temperature range 150 to 425 K. The loss tangent (tan ) and the dielectric loss (/0) are found to show striking minima around a cut-off frequency 105 Hz. In the lower frequency range (105 Hz), 1() s T n is obeyed with s (0 to 0.51) increasing as a function of temperature and n (0.10 to 0.14) showing a very weak temperature dependence. In the higher frequency region (105 Hz), 1() and /0 increase sharply leading to the quadratic behavior of 1() with s equal to 2. These processes are discussed by analyzing an equivalent circuit which shows that at lower frequencies, the effects of series resistance in leads and contacts can be neglected, while at higher frequencies such effect give rise to spurious 2 dependance for the conductance. A weakly activated AC conductivity and a frequency exponent s that increases with increasing temperature suggest that the low frequency behavior originates from carrier migration by tunneling process.

Several 316 manual metal arc weld metals produced with commercial and experimental consumables were aged between 600 and 850 °C. This resulted in the dissolution of the -ferrite with the appearance of new austenite, M23C6, intermetallics , and phase. During transformation, the -ferrite becomes progressively enriched in Cr, Mo and Si and, depending on the local composition of the -ferrite, eventually transforms to intermetallic or phases. A transformation model has been developed which indicates that solute diffusion via the / interface is the controlling mechanism. This enrichment process has been found to be important in controlling the formation of intermetallics. In the weld metals containing controlled residual additions of Ti and Ti + B, ageing resulted in the a fine dispersion of MX phase in the austenitic matrix.

The change of the conductivity in the rare earth perovskite oxide took place after the chemisorption of flammable gases. The sensitivity for methanol was highest. From the conductivity change of these perovskite oxides after the injection of methanol, the energy needed to promote an electron from a conducting to a nonconducting state, E=E c-E t, could be derived from the equation=A 0 exp (–E/kT). LnCoO3 had the smallest E and H (metal-O), which is the binding energy of oxygen coordinating to the metal ions, but exhibited the highest activity for gas sensing. The gas sensing mechanism was also considered.

Metastable lath martensite ( L ) phase wires with high strengths have been produced in the Fe-Ni-Cr-Al-C alloy system by melt spinning in rotating water. These wires have a circular cross section and a white lustre and the wire diameter is in the range of 100 to 140m. The width and length of each lath in the L phase are as small as about 0.3 and 2m, respectively. The y, f and p are about 900 and 1650 MPa and 2.0% for the L wires. The subsequent annealing causes an increase in p as well as y and f and the attained values are about 1000 and 1700 MPa and 3.0% for Fe-10Ni-10Cr-6.5 Al-1.0C wire annealed at 773 K for 1 h owing to the precipitation strengthening of a very fine unidentified carbide and to a high density of dislocations and lath boundaries in the L phase. Further annealing causes a significant decrease in p through decomposition of L to+M7C3+M23C6. Therefore, the high strength combined with relatively good ductility for the L wires is interpreted as due to the suppression of the phase transformation of L to a mixed structure of+M7C3+M23C6 by melt quenching.
