The angular dependence of the thermoluminescent (TL) signal of thin alpha-Al2O3:C dosemeters was investigated for a series of beta-emitting radionuclides commonly employed in nuclear medicine and characterised by different mean energies (99Tc, 177Lu, 90Sr/90Y and 90Y). Irradiations were performed in a controlled geometry, using a properly designed irradiator intended to realistically reproduce the situation of exposure of hospital personnel to beta-emitting pharmaceuticals. Under the conditions of extended source and short source to detector distance, the TL signal of thin alpha-Al2O3:C layers per unit irradiation time was observed to be independent on the angle of incidence within acceptable limits, particularly for those radionuclides with maximum energy >500 keV. This property may be easily explained by using simple physical considerations, such as the limited thickness of the dosemeters. The results confirm that these detectors are suitable for beta-ray extremity dose measurements, when the photon contribution is negligible, as in the case considered.  相似文献

The possibility of using a single grain OSL attachment system developed by the Ris? National Laboratory (Roskilde, Denmark) for assessing the spatial distribution of radionuclides incorporated in human tissues was investigated. Detectors containing arrays of single grains of alpha-Al2O3)C powder (Landauer Inc., USA) were prepared using aluminium discs (diameter 9.7 mm), which can accommodate 100 single grains in 0.3 mm holes positioned in a 10 x 10 grid. The luminescence and dosimetric properties of each grain were investigated by exposing the detectors to uniform photon radiation fields. After the characterisation of the detectors, the systems were tested to assess the spatial dose rate distribution because of 90Sr incorporated in a tooth sample extracted from an inhabitant of the Techa River region.  相似文献

This paper addresses issues in the application of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) retrospective dosimetry with dental tissues exposed by radionuclides accumulated in the dentin. A simple dosimetric model of a tooth incorporating 90Sr is presented. The tooth is modelled as two concentric cylinders: the inner cylinder composed of dentin, and the outer cylindrical shell of enamel. Extensive Monte Carlo calculations were done to obtain the distributions of absorbed dose in dentin and enamel for teeth of different sizes. The results were used to calculate the mean absorbed doses in enamel that are directly measurable by EPR. A relationship between such measured doses and the specific activity of 90Sr in dentin was derived based on a simple model of 90Sr accumulation. The roles of different tooth tissues as dose detectors are analysed, and the importance of dentin as a dosimetric material for internal exposure is pointed out.  相似文献

The characteristics of thermoluminescence (TL) and optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) in undoped alpha-Al2O3 single crystals were studied. The TL glow curves of the crystal samples irradiated at various dose levels were measured by Ris? TL/OSL-DA-15B/C reader with U-340 or 7-59 filters at different heating rates. The glow peaks measured with U-340 at approximately 210 degrees C of the undoped alpha-Al2O3 can be well fitted by first-order kinetic equation whereas the glow peaks measured with 7-59 filters are a composite of two first-order glow peaks. It indicates that the TL glow curves are dependent upon the filter used in the reader that is related to the emission spectra of luminescence materials. The OSL were also measured and fitted by two exponential functions to get the luminescence intensities. The TL and OSL dose responses of the undoped alpha-Al2O3 crystal were obtained in the dose range of 0.12-248 Gy and fitted by the composite action dose-response function to get nonlinear characteristic parameters. The TL and OSL dose responses are linear-sublinear.  相似文献

Measurements of the response of thermoluminescent (TL) detectors after gamma ray doses high enough to observe signal saturation provide input to microdosimetric models which relate this gamma-ray response with the energy response after low doses of photons (gamma rays and low-energy X rays) and after high-LET irradiation. To measure their gamma ray response up to saturation, LiF:Mg,Ti (MTS-7 and MTT), LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-7), CaSO4:Dy (KCD) and Al2O3:C detectors were irradiated with 60Co gamma rays over the range 1-5000 Gy. The X-ray photon energy response and TL efficiency (relative to gamma rays) after doses of beta rays and alpha particles, were also measured, for CaSO4:Dy and for Al2O3:C. Microdosimetric and track structure modelling was then applied to the experimental data. In a manner similar to LiF:Mg,Cu,P, the experimentally observed under response of alpha-Al2O3:C to X rays <100 keV, compared with cross-section calculations, is explained as a microdosimetric effect caused by the saturation of response of this detector without prior supralinearity (saturation of traps along the tracks). The enhanced X-ray photon energy response of CaSO4:Dy is related to the supralinearity observed in this material after high gamma ray doses, similarly to that in LiF:Mg,Ti. The discussed model approaches support the general rule relating dose-, energy- and ionisation density-responses in TL detectors: if their gamma ray response is sublinear prior to saturation, the measured photon energy response is lower, and if it is supralinear, it may be higher than that expected from the calculation of the interaction cross sections alone. Since similar rules have been found to apply to other solid-state detector systems, microdosimetry may offer a valuable contribution to solid-state dosimetry even prior to mechanistic explanations of physical phenomena in different TL detectors.  相似文献

We report on strong superlinearity of high temperature (300-700 degrees C) thermoluminescence (TL) peaks in alpha-Al2O3:C powder. The main dosimetric peak at approximately 200 degrees C, previously found to exhibit slight superlinearity, is now shown to yield a slope of approximately 1.15 on a log(intensity) vs. log(dose) curve. Higher temperature peaks at approximately 320, 450 and 650 degrees C, previously reported following UV and X-ray excitation, have now been observed after beta irradiation and showed stronger superlinearity. Using a blue filter, the weak peak at approximately 320 degrees C started about quadratically and the slope on the log-log scale decreased gradually from 2 to about unity at approximately 100 Gy. The two higher temperature peaks at approximately 450 and approximately 650 degrees C also exhibited a strong superlinear dose dependence in this dose range, with an average slope of approximately 2. Roughly similar behaviour has been found when a UV filter was used. The possible explanation of the strong superlinearity is discussed.  相似文献

A finger-ring dosemeter and reader has been designed that uses OSL readout of alpha-Al2O3:C (aluminium oxide). The use of aluminium oxide is important because it allows the sensitive element of the dosemeter to be a very thin layer that reduces the beta and gamma energy dependence to acceptable levels without compromising the required sensitivity for dose measurement. OSL readout allows the ring dosemeter to be interrogated with minimal disassembly. The ring dosemeter consists of three components: aluminium oxide powder for measurement of dose, an aluminium substrate that gives structure to the ring, and an aluminised Mylar cover to prevent the aluminium oxide from exposure to light. The thicknesses of the three components have been optimised for beta response using the Monte Carlo computer code FLUKA. A reader was also designed and developed that allows the dosemeter to be read after removing the Mylar. Future efforts are discussed.  相似文献

In the last few years coronary endovascular brachytherapy using gamma- and beta-emitting radionuclides has been established as a standard treatment procedure to prevent restenosis after percutaneous coronary interventions. Direct measurements and calculations were made to determine personnel doses and organ doses of patients due to gamma rays of 192Ir and beta rays of 90Sr/90Y and 32P sources. In general, our results show that the dose levels are low compared with the X-ray exposure from angiography. The dose rate from bremsstrahlung at 1 m distance from a device containing a 90Sr/90Y source of 2.3 GBq is 4 micro Sv h(-1). The skin dose from beta rays during source transfer into and from the patient was estimated with the directional dose equivalent H'(0.07) of 10 micro Sv at 1 m distance from the catheter. By maintaining safe distances, the dose levels can be kept well within annual dose limits.  相似文献

A long-term in situ subsurface instrument for monitoring radioactive contaminant plumes, as an alternative to soil analysis, is described. A portable, laser-based reader optically stimulates luminescence from sensors, each containing an Al2O3:C dosemeter. The sensors, designed for placement at various subsurface locations around a waste site, are allowed to accumulate dose for a predetermined time that is based on the instrument's minimum detectable dose (MDD). The reader is then attached to the sensor by fibre optic cable to read the accumulated dose; an increase above natural background levels indicating the presence of leaked radioactivity. Based on an MDD of 5 microGy, it is shown that the sensor can measure soil concentrations of 1.85 Bq cm(-3) after an exposure time of 50 h for 137Cs and 67 h for 90Sr/90Y. Discrimination between beta and gamma radiation is possible using an end cap placed over one of the two paired sensors, allowing simultaneous measurement of 137Cs and 90Sr/90Y in a mixed field. The monitor system represents a substantial improvement over quarterly soil sampling because of a greatly increased measurement frequency and the ability to perform measurements reproducibly.  相似文献

An alpha-Al2O3 and MgAl2O3 spinel phase doped alpha-Al2O3 nanopowders were fabricated by the thermal decomposition and synthetic of ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (AACH). Crystallite size of 5 to 8 nm were fabricated when reaction temperature of AACH was low, 8 degrees C, and the highest [NH4+][AlO(OH)2-][HCO3] ionic concentration of pH 10 from the ammonium hydrogen carbonate (AHC) aqueous solution. The phase transformation of amorphous-s, theta-, alpha-Al2O3, MgAl2O3 spinel phases was examined at each temperature according to the amount of Mg(NO3)2 x 6H2O and AACH. A time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram for thermal decomposition in air was determined. Homogeneous, spherical alpha-Al2O3 nanopowders with a particle size of 60 nm were obtained by firing the crystallites, which had been synthesized from AACH at pH 10 and 8 degrees C, at 1050 degrees C for 6 h in air.  相似文献

Two types of thin LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors, GR-200F and MCP-Ns, have been characterised for use in the design of an extremity dosemeter for mixed beta-photon radiation fields. Both detectors consist of an extremely thin layer of sensitive material with effective thicknesses of 5 and 8 mg cm(-2), respectively, held in a 5 mg cm(-2) PVC ring holder. Dosimetric performance was analysed according to the ISO 12794 standard and compared with 240 mg cm(-2) TLD-100 measurements. In particular, the energy response was obtained for ISO narrow X-ray spectra, (137)Cs, (60)Co, (204)Tl and (90)Sr/(90)Y. From these measurements a mean calibration factor was calculated to estimate H(p)(0.07). Subsequently, the performance of the dosemeters was checked for a set of 10 different mixed photon and beta-photon fields. The study shows that the proposed dosemeters can estimate H(p)(0.07) in a wide range of mixed beta-photon fields with a maximum deviation from the given dose of 30% and an overall uncertainty of the order of 25% (k = 1). However, the results also highlight a large variability among the different thin detectors and, thus, the standard TLD-100 material is recommended whenever the workplace does not include low-energy beta radiation.  相似文献

Results of studying the thermoluminescent response of undoped ZrO2 + PTFE pellets irradiated with 90Sr/90Y beta particles are presented. Previously, TL characteristics of ZrO2 films doped with rare earths were studied. Phosphor powder was obtained by evaporating a solution of zirconium nitrate in ethanol. In order to stabilise the traps in ZrO2 this phosphor was submitted to different thermal treatments. Optimal thermal treatment consisted in heating at 1100 degrees C for 24 h. With this powder. pressing at room temperature a mixture (2:1) of ZrO2 and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), pellets of 5 mm diameter and 0.8 mm thickness were made. The glow curve of ZrO2 + PTFE pellets exhibited two peaks at 200 and 250 degrees C: its TL response as a function of beta particles dose was linear in the range from 2 to 60 Gy. Repeatability over 10 cycles was 1.8%. Fading at room temperature was 3.8% per month.  相似文献

An intercomparison of ring dosemeters has been organised with the aim of assessing the technical capabilities of available extremity dosemeters and focusing on their performance at clinical workplaces with potentially high extremity doses. Twenty-four services from 16 countries participated in the intercomparison. The dosemeters were exposed to reference photon ((137)Cs) and beta ((147)Pm, (85)Kr and (90)Sr/(90)Y) fields together with fields representing realistic exposure situations in interventional radiology (direct and scattered radiation) and nuclear medicine ((99 m)Tc and (18)F). It has been found that most dosemeters provided satisfactory measurements of H(p)(0.07) for photon radiation, both in reference and realistic fields. However, only four dosemeters fulfilled the established requirements for all radiation qualities. The main difficulties were found for the measurement of low-energy beta radiation. Finally, the results also showed a general under-response of detectors to (18)F, which was attributed to the difficulties of the dosimetric systems to measure the positron contribution to the dose.  相似文献

Nanometre-sized particles of transition (t)-aluminas are important for the fabrication of high-quality alumina ceramics. Multiple tons are produced each year using a variety of gas-phase processes. The nanoparticles produced by these methods consist mainly of the undesired delta phase with some gamma- and theta-Al(2)O(3). Nano-t-aluminas should provide access to dense nano/submicrometre-grained alpha-Al(2)O(3) shapes offering significant advantages over micrometre-grained shapes. Unfortunately, polymorphism coupled with the high activation energy for nucleating alpha-Al(2)O(3) greatly impedes efforts to process dense alpha-Al(2)O(3) with controlled grain sizes, especially for submicrometre materials. Typically alpha-Al(2)O(3) nucleation within t-aluminas is sporadic rather than uniform, leading to exaggerated grain growth and vermicular microstructures without full densification (5). Thus, production of quantities of nano-alpha-Al(2)O(3) from multiple nano-t-aluminas for seeding or direct processing of alpha-Al(2)O(3) monoliths could greatly change how alpha-Al(2)O(3) components are processed. We report here that liquid-feed flame spray pyrolysis of nano-t-aluminas converts them to dispersible 30-80 nm alpha-Al(2)O(3) powders (50-85% phase transformed). Surprisingly, the powder surfaces are fully dehydrated. These powders pressureless sinter to more than 99.5% dense alpha-Al(2)O(3) with final grain sizes < or =500 nm without sintering aids.  相似文献

The electronic properties and the imaginary parts of the dielectric function for nanosized ZnAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 are studied compared with those of B4-ZnO, B1-MgO and alpha-Al2O3 using a first-principles pesudopotential plane-wave method. The results show that both the electronic structures and the optical spectra of ZnAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 are different from those of ZnO, MgO and Al2O3 due to the atomic rearrangement, which agrees with the experimental data. The insight mechanism is also discussed.  相似文献

Some new experimental results illustrating the effect of deep traps on luminescent and dosimetric properties of anion-defective single crystals of alpha-Al2O3 have been described. It was found that deep traps had an electronic origin. They were filled thanks to the photoionisation of F-centres and their filling was accompanied by the conversion of F-->F+ centres. The experiments revealed an interactive interaction of deep trapping centres. A model taking into account the thermal ionisation of excited states of F-centres was proposed. This model describes the trap filling process and mechanisms of the radio-, photo- and thermoluminescence, TSC and TSEE of the crystals under study. The sensitivity of TLD-500 detectors based on anion-defective alpha-Al2O3 equalised when deep trapping centres were filled.  相似文献

The microdosimetric one hit detector model was applied to calculate the dose response, energy response and relative thermoluminescence (TL) efficiency, eta, of high sensitive LiF:Mg,Cu,P and Al(2)O(3):C detectors after their irradiations by X rays, gamma rays, beta electrons and heavy charged particles (HCP). Microdosimetric distributions in 60 nm targets for photons and beta rays were calculated using the TRION MC track structure code, for HCP using the analytical model of Xapsos with modified transport of secondary electrons and the model of Olko & Booz. The calculated values of eta compare favourably with a broad spectrum of experimental data, including ICHIBAN experiments with HCP. The model offers a method for calculating the thermoluminescence response of TL foils applied to 2-D dosimetry of radiotherapeutic proton beams.  相似文献

At the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ) in Kraków, a two-dimensional (2-D) thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetry system was developed within the MAESTRO (Methods and Advanced Equipment for Simulation and Treatment in Radio-Oncology) 6 Framework Programme and tested by evaluating 2-D dose distributions around radioactive sources. A thermoluminescent detector (TLD) foil was developed, of thickness 0.3 mm and diameter 60 mm, containing a mixture of highly sensitive LiF:Mg,Cu,P powder and Ethylene TetraFluoroEthylene (ETFE) polymer. Foil detectors were irradiated with (226)Ra brachytherapy sources and a (90)Sr/(90)Y source. 2-D dose distributions were evaluated using a prototype planar (diameter 60 mm) reader, equipped with a 12 bit Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) PCO AG camera, with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. The new detectors, showing a spatial resolution better than 0.5 mm and a measurable dose range typical for radiotherapy, can find many applications in clinical dosimetry. Another technology applicable to clinical dosimetry, also developed at IFJ, is the Si microstrip detector of size 95 x 95 mm(2), which may be used to evaluate the dose distribution with a spatial resolution of 120 microm along one direction, in real-time mode. The microstrip and TLD technology will be further improved, especially to develop detectors of larger area, and to make them applicable to some advanced radiotherapy modalities, such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) or proton radiotherapy.  相似文献

The thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of sodium chloride (NaCl), known as common salt, used for cooking purposes (iodised salt), have been studied in the present paper considering its usage as an 'accidental dosemeter' in the case of a nuclear fallout. TL characteristics of common salt have been examined under excitation with a beta dose of 20 Gy from a 90Sr beta source. The salt specimens are used in the form of discs. The average salt grain that sticks to the disc is measured to be approximately 1 mg. The TL of the beta irradiated salt is recorded in the conventional TL apparatus. Initially three peaks were observed at 133, 205 and 238 degrees C. All three peaks are well resolved, having maximum intensity at 238 degrees C. The material under investigation, i.e. 'common salt' possesses many good dosimetric properties and therefore this can be considered as an 'accidental dosemeter'.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine energy dependence characteristics in terms of values of the personal dose equivalent, HP(10). The following types of thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) were investigated: (a) two new types based on lithium borate, Li2B4O7:Cu,In and Li2B4O7:Cu,In,Ag; (b) two types based on the highly sensitive material LiF:Mg,Cu,P, TLD-700H and GR 200A; (c) two well-known types of LiF:Mg,Ti detector, TLD-100 and TLD-700 and (d) highly sensitive Al2O3:C detectors. TLDs previously calibrated with 137Cs gamma rays were simultaneously irradiated with X ray beams in the range of mean energies between 33 and 116 keV. The irradiations were performed with detectors in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) holders placed on a 30 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm water phantom with PMMA walls (ISO phantom). Measured energy responses were compared with calculated data for HP(10) values. The results confirmed the satisfactory tissue equivalent characteristics of all investigated TLDs except Al2O3:C, which (due to its large energy dependence) is suitable for personal dosimetry only with an appropriate filter.  相似文献
