We tested the hypothesis that zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have positive effects on the toxin-producing cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, at low phosphorus (P) concentrations, but negative effects on M. aeruginosa at high P, with a large-scale enclosure experiment in an oligotrophic lake. After three weeks, mussels had a significantly positive effect on M. aeruginosa at ambient P (total phosphorus, TP ∼10 μg L−1), and a significantly negative effect at high P (simulating a TP of ∼40 μg L−1 in lakes). Positive and negative effects were strong and very similar in magnitude. Thus, we were able to ameliorate a negative effect of Dreissena invasion on water quality (i.e., promotion of Microcystis) by adding P to water from an oligotrophic lake. Our results are congruent with many field observations of Microcystis response to Dreissena invasion across ecosystems of varying P availability.  相似文献

The potential impact of zebra mussel infestation on the dynamics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Hudson River was determined by investigating the biodeposition and bioconcentration of PCBs, using algal food contaminated with 2,5,2'- and 2,4,2',4'-chlorobiphenyls (CBPs) in the laboratory. Approximately 46-90% of the total food was ingested depending on the supply rate. The highest proportion of ingested congeners was found in biodeposits (64+/-11% for 2,5,2'-CBP, and 52+/-6% for 2,4,2',4'-CBP), followed by tissues (17+/-3% for 2,5,2'-CBP, and 23+/-5% for 2,4,2',4'-CBP), and the lowest in shells. The clearance rate decreased with increasing food concentration, but increased with dilution rate. On the other hand, ingestion rate (IR) increased with food concentration and dilution rate. IR also increased with food supply rate (food concentrationxdilution rate) following the same linear function whether the supply rate was varied through food concentration or dilution rate. Therefore, the dilution rate- or food concentration-dependent variation in IR was due to the change in the food supply rate. IR was independent of the kind of PCB congeners. The trend of bioaccumulation in mussel tissues from food ingestion was similar to that of IR; bioaccumulation increased linearly with food supply rate, whether the supply rate was varied through the dilution rate or the food concentration. The bioaccumulation of 2,4,2',4'-CBP was significantly higher than that of 2,5,2'-CBP (p<0.05). The bioaccumulation was linearly related to the IR or to the total amount of food ingested. Assimilation efficiency, PCB incorporated in the tissue per total ingested PCB, was higher for 2,4,2',4'-CBP than for 2,5,2'-CBP (p<0.05). The congener concentration in biodeposits increased with food supply rate. However, the concentration of 2,5,2'-CBP was significantly greater than that of 2,4,2',4'-CBP in a mirror image of bioaccumulation. These results indicate that zebra mussels may significantly alter PCB dynamics in the Hudson River through redeposition from the water column and through bioconcentration.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water reservoirs present a major ecosystem functioning and human health issue. The ability to predict reservoir vulnerability to these blooms would provide information critical for decision making, hazard prevention and management. We developed a new, comparative index of vulnerability based on simple measures of reservoir and catchment characteristics, rather than water quality data, which were instead used to test the index’s effectiveness. Testing was based on water quality data collected over a number of seasons and years from 15 drinking water reservoirs in subtropical, southeast Queensland. The index correlated significantly and strongly with algal cell densities, including potentially toxic cyanobacteria, as well as with the proportions of cyanobacteria in summer months. The index also performed better than each of the measures of reservoir and catchment characteristics alone, and as such, was able to encapsulate the physical characteristics of subtropical reservoirs, and their catchments, into an effective indicator of the vulnerability to summer blooms. This was further demonstrated by calculating the index for a new reservoir to be built within the study region. Under planned dimensions and land use, a comparatively high level of vulnerability was reached within a few years. However, the index score and the number of years taken to reach a similar level of vulnerability could be reduced simply by decreasing the percentage of grazing land cover via revegetation within the catchment. With climate change, continued river impoundment and the growing demand for potable water, our index has potential decision making benefits when planning future reservoirs to reduce their vulnerability to cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

Large amounts of industrial waste containing high concentrations of mercury (up to 436 microg/g) are dumped in a reservoir adjacent to a chlor-alkali plant in Flix (Catalonia, Spain), on the lower Ebro River. In order to assess the spatial redistribution of mercury from the point source and its bioavailability to the aquatic food web, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were collected at several sites. The highest total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations ever reported for zebra mussels were found (THg: 0.02 to 0.81 microg/g ww; MeHg: 0.22 to 0.60 microg/g ww). At the most polluted site, close to the waste dump, the mean values were 20 times greater than the local background level. Concentrations decreased with increasing mussel size at all sites. The MeHg/THg ratio was ca. 60% (range: 50-80%). A comparison of similar size classes clearly indicated the hot spots of Hg bioavailability to the aquatic food web and downstream transport.  相似文献

The cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which commonly produce mass developments in fresh and saline waters are capable of producing toxins. These compounds have been responsible for the deaths of animals, birds and fish in many countries, and have been linked with several forms of human illness through skin contact and ingestion. Evidence has accumulated over the past decade that cyanobacterial toxins occur commonly in European waters which contain cyanobacterial mass growths. This paper summarizes the recent published occurrence and types of cyanobacterial toxins found in European waters with reference to poisoning incidents.
Cyanobacterial blooms were particularly abundant in the warm dry summer of 1989 in the UK. The deaths of sheep and dogs and the cases of human illness that were ascribed to cyanobacterial toxins were followed by a more intensive and wider investigation into the extent of cyanobacterial toxicity in UK waters than had hitherto been undertaken. Of the cyanobacterial blooms sampled from over 90 freshwaters, approximately two-thirds were toxic (lethal) according to mouse bioassay. Short-term and long-term needs for the recognition, quantification and management of problems which can be caused by potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria in water-bodies used for recreation, aquaculture and potable supply are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Water quality deterioration in water distribution networks can be associated with high water residence time in the network. To this end, some previous studies have proposed optimization procedures for valve management. However, these studies generally come up with operational configurations assuming deterministic user demand patterns that may never occur in reality. In consequence, the proposed solutions may not be effective for improving water quality or do not comply with pressure constraints if different demand patterns are observed. This study proposes a methodology to determine robust configurations of the valves to keep water residence time at acceptable levels regardless of the variability in demand patterns. The methodology is tested on four different distribution systems of varying topology and size. Results show the importance of executing robust – instead of deterministic, optimization to find valve configurations that guarantee the performance of the networks in terms of hydraulics and water quality.  相似文献

In situ feeding assays implemented with transplanted crustacean gammarids have been claimed as promising tools for the diagnostic assessment of water quality. Nevertheless the implementation of such methodologies in biomonitoring programs is still limited. This is explained by the necessity to improve the reliability of these bioassays. The present study illustrates how modelling the influence of confounding factors could allow to improve the interpretation of in situ feeding assay with Gammarus fossarum. We proceeded in four steps: (i) we quantified the influence of body size, temperature and conductivity on feeding rate in laboratory conditions; (ii) based on these laboratory findings, we computed a feeding inhibition index, which proved to be robust to environmental conditions and allowed us to define a reference statistical distribution of feeding activity values through the data compilation of 24 in situ assays among diverse reference stations at different seasons; (iii) we tested the sensitivity of the feeding assay using this statistical framework by performing 41 in situ deployments in contaminated stations presenting a large range of contaminant profiles; and (iv) we illustrated in two site-specific studies how the proposed methodology improved the diagnosis of water quality by preventing false-positive and false-negative cases mainly induced by temperature confounding influence. Interestingly, the implementation of the developed protocol could permit to assess water quality without following an upstream/downstream procedure and to compare assays performed at different seasons as part of large-scale biomonitoring programs.  相似文献

Fullerene nanomaterials are finding an increasing number of applications in energy and environmental technologies. However, substantial production and use of fullerenes will likely lead to environmental exposure with unknown consequences. In this study, aqueous suspensions of three types of fullerenes nanoparticles, C60 fullerene, single-wall (SW) and multi-wall (MW) carbon nanotubes (CNT) were prepared by sonication and tested for reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidation of benchmark organic compounds under ultraviolet (UV)-A irradiation. All three fullerenes formed colloidal aggregates in water. SWCNTs showed the highest ROS production and 2-chlorophenol degradation followed by MWCNT, and fullerene.  相似文献

Field surveys were designed to examine the effects of sewage contamination from storm overflow effluent on faecal coliform and Escherichia coli concentrations in the flesh of wild mussels (Mytilus edulis). Bags containing 30 mussels each were fixed at known inter-tidal locations and retrieved at intervals following discharge from a nearby combined sewer overflow (CSO). Concentrations of faecal coliform bacteria and E. coli were measured in the shellfish flesh and in samples of overlying water prior to collection of the mussel samples. Faecal coliform and E. coli concentrations in shellfish increased rapidly after CSO discharge. E. coli concentrations exceeded the European shellfish hygiene class C limit of 46,000 100g(-1), and decayed during subsequent CSO discharge-free periods. The concentration and depuration response was independent of the magnitude of CSO spill volume. First-order exponential decay functions were fitted to the data. Decay rates were lower than those found in corresponding microcosm experiments. This relates to the repeated pattern of inundation and exposure associated with the tidal cycles in the estuary. Relationships between E. coli and faecal coliform concentrations in the shellfish and overlying water samples were relatively weak (r<0.60), a pattern often seen with data from uncontrolled environmental experiments.  相似文献

This is the first to conduct simultaneous determination of microcystin (MC) contaminations in multi-groups of vertebrates (fish, turtle, duck and water bird) from Lake Taihu with Microcystis blooms. MCs (-RR, -YR, -LR) in Microcystis scum was 328 μg g− 1 DW. MCs reached 235 μg g− 1 DW in intestinal contents of phytoplanktivorous silver carp, but never exceeded 0.1 μg g− 1 DW in intestinal contents of other animals. The highest MC content in liver of fish was in Carassius auratus (150 ng g− 1 DW), followed by silver carp and Culter ilishaeformis, whereas the lowest was in common carp (3 ng g− 1 DW). In livers of turtle, duck and water bird, MC content ranged from 18 to 30 ng g− 1 DW. High MC level was found in the gonad, egg yolk and egg white of Nycticorax nycticorax and Anas platyrhynchos, suggesting the potential effect of MCs on water bird and duck embryos. High MC contents were identified for the first time in the spleens of N. nycticorax and A. platyrhynchos (6.850 and 9.462 ng g− 1 DW, respectively), indicating a different organotropism of MCs in birds. Lakes with deaths of turtles or water birds in the literatures had a considerably higher MC content in both cyanobacteria and wildlife than Lake Taihu, indicating that toxicity of cyanobacteria may determine accumulation level of MCs and consequently fates of aquatic wildlife.  相似文献

Although the use of the water resources in Uzbekistan is strongly limited by their quality, it has to be noted that there is a lack of information and data within the international scientific literature with regard to the water chemical characteristics of the Amu Darya River, one of the main water resources in Central Asia. To add to such knowledge, this paper examines the spatial and temporal variation of the water quality of the Amu Darya River in order to assess its degree of degradation and the main causal factors. The functional relationships of the pollutants with respect to the flow regime are investigated. Finally an "opportune temporal window" for water withdrawal for filling the reservoirs, in relation to human consumption, will be indicated. The high salinization levels of the waters are mainly due to the presence of sulphates and chlorine. At the up-stream site salinity, although presenting elevated concentrations, does not exceed palatability levels; after the 450 km point the opportune temporal window for water withdrawal with acceptable salinity values is reduced to the period from May to September. Two main driving forces govern the temporal variation of the salinity of the Amu Darya water: a low drainage density of the area which limits the salt loads induced by the natural runoff processes, and snow and glacier melting in the upper catchment area which promotes dilution of the dissolved salts during the high-flow period. During low-flow periods salinity is strongly influenced by the return of waters used for land washing and irrigation.  相似文献

The high salinization in some reservoirs of the Contas river basin (Bahia-Brazil) has been erroneously attributed only to concentration by evaporation. However, recent studies of this basin have shown that in period of intense rainfalls, occur an increase of the saline concentration in the flowing rivers of the reservoirs. The application of statistical methods (cluster and principal components analysis) have shown that this fact can be attributed to the discharge of saline waters from the small reservoirs of every drained area, provoked by inundation, is also an important factor in the salinization process. Thus the study of the geochemical variables: Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Cl(-), SO(4)(2-) and CO(3)(2-), showed one group formed by Na(+) and Cl(-), attributed to the discharge of saline water provoked by inundation from a small reservoir, and a second group constituted by Ca(2+), Mg(2+), K(+) and SO(4)(2-), due to an increase provoked by the evaporation in the salinization process.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to examine the Po River water quality in a small stretch in Piedmont (northern Italy). In this stretch a large pollution load, derived from the wastewater treatment plant of Torino area (more than 2 million inhabitants), is discharged and diluted in the water. In this study this load has been quantified and modeled in order to understand the sources, destinations and effects of the emitted pollutants. The objective was to determine the impact produced by the Torino Wastewater Treatment Plant on the quality of the water, based on various hydrological conditions and the possible intervention on the point and diffuse loads.  相似文献

Mollusk species have been shown to be sensitive to various endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) at environmentally relevant concentrations. Waste water treatment plant (WWTP) effluents are a major source of potential or known EDC in the aquatic environment. The aim of this study was to develop an in situ exposure method using the New Zealand mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Molluska, Hydrobiidea) to assess the impact of water quality on the life traits of this species, by focusing on its reproduction. The impact of three WWTP discharges on three different receiving rivers was studied. The effects of WWTP effluent on adult survival, weight, reproduction and vertebrate-like sex-steroid levels in snails were monitored for three to four weeks. Although the physicochemical and hydrological parameters varied greatly between the rivers, the caging experiments allowed us to detect significant impairment of the life traits of snails when exposed downstream of the WWTPs discharge. While adult survival was not affected by exposure, reproduction was significantly impacted downstream from the WWTP effluent discharges (60-70% decrease of embryos without shells after three to four weeks exposure) independently of the river. Modulations of steroid levels proved to be an informative parameter with an increase of testosterone downstream of the discharges, and increases and decreases of 17β-estradiol levels according to site. The endpoints used proved to be an adapted method for field exposures and allowed the discrimination between upstream and downstream sites.  相似文献

Exploratory data analysis such as hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis were applied to water quality dataset of the Kaduna River, obtained during 3 years (2008–2010), monthly monitoring of eight key different sampling sites for 19 parameters to extract correlations and similarities between variables and to classify river sampling sites in groups of similar quality. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped eight sampling sites into three statistically significant clusters of similar water composition. Six varifactors were obtained after varimax rotation of initial principal components using principal component analysis. These techniques gave an insight into the sources of pollution. Anthropogenic influence (municipal, industrial wastewater and agricultural run‐off) was the major source of river water pollution.  相似文献

This case study reports different multivariate statistical techniques applied for evaluation of temporal/spatial variations and interpretation of a large complex water-quality data set obtained during monitoring of Gomti River in Northern part of India. Water quality of the Gomti River, a major tributary of the Ganga River was monitored at eight different sites selected in relatively low, moderate and high pollution regions, regularly over a period of 5 years (1994-1998) for 24 parameters. The complex data matrix (17,790 observations) was treated with different multivariate techniques such as cluster analysis, factor analysis/principal component analysis (FA/PCA) and discriminant analysis (DA). Cluster analysis (CA) showed good results rendering three different groups of similarity between the sampling sites reflecting the different water-quality parameters of the river system. FA/PCA identified six factors, which are responsible for the data structure explaining 71% of the total variance of the data set and allowed to group the selected parameters according to common features as well as to evaluate the incidence of each group on the overall variation in water quality. However, significant data reduction was not achieved, as it needed 14 parameters to explain 71% of both the temporal and spatial changes in water quality. Discriminant analysis showed the best results for data reduction and pattern recognition during both temporal and spatial analysis. Discriminant analysis showed five parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity, total alkalinity and magnesium) affording more than 88% right assignations in temporal analysis, while nine parameters (pH, temperature, alkalinity, Ca-hardness, DO, BOD, chloride, sulfate and TKN) to afford 91% right assignations in spatial analysis of three different regions in the basin. Thus, DA allowed reduction in dimensionality of the large data set, delineating a few indicator parameters responsible for large variations in water quality. This study presents necessity and usefulness of multivariate statistical techniques for evaluation and interpretation of large complex data sets with a view to get better information about the water quality and design of monitoring network for effective management of water resources.  相似文献

In Canada, the Oregon spotted frog (Rana pretiosa) is a critically endangered species with only three known populations and an estimated breeding population of less than 400 located in isolated sites in the extreme south-west corner of British Columbia. Floating Nitex cages were used to assess embryonic survivorship in two populations of Oregon spotted frogs from 2002-2005. One population, near Aldergrove, BC experienced declines in population size while the other population, at Maria Slough, increased during the period 1997-2001. During embryo development, we measured trace metals, nutrients and physical parameters in the water at each site. These were used to test the hypothesis that water quality parameters were correlated with embryonic survivorship. During the study period in the declining population at Aldergrove R. pretiosa bred at two distinct sub sites (A and B) located 500 m apart within the wetland. Mean embryonic survivorship varied from 9% to 36% at sub site A and from 78% to 88% at sub site B whereas in the population in Maria Slough, the mean embryonic survivorship varied from 77% to 84%. Sulphate was the only water chemistry variable that differed significantly between the two study sites and was the highest at Maria Slough. A weak significant positive correlation was found between chloride and embryonic survivorship and conductivity and embryonic survivorship. A multiple regression model found conductivity was the only significant variable. We concluded that natural water chemistry conditions of low chloride and consequently low conductivity may be contributing to low embryonic survivorship in the population of R. pretiosa at MD Aldergrove, BC.  相似文献
