A natural circulation solar dryer for drying products in the form of powder has been developed. It is of modular design and aperture area of one module is 3.34 m2. A new concept of moveable glazing has been introduced for ease in loading and unloading. Air entering the dryer moves in a zig-zag path as it flows over the product and under each tray before leaving from the top. There is a provision to dry the product under shade. Also, the dryer can be dismantled and stored in a room during off-season. The dryer was tested to dry Di-calcium phosphate (DCP) at Ludhiana (31°N). The average drying efficiency for a batch was found to be 54.0%. The cost of drying DCP using this solar dryer was 0.56 Rupees per kg of dried DCP as compared to 1.94 Rupees per kg of dried DCP for a wood-fueled industrial dryer. In comparison to a solar tunnel dryer for DCP drying, the initial investment per kilogram of the dried DCP, floor area per kilogram of wet DCP, and cost of drying per kilogram of dried DCP for this dryer was reduced by 7.1%, 67.2%, and 16.4% respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The performance of three different types of dryers for the hot air drying of sawn-limber planks are compared. These were the electric resistance dryer, solar dryer, and the dehumidifier dryer. Whilst the electric and solar dryers depended only upon hot air for drying, the dehumidifier dryer relied on hot dehumidified air. The results of investigations carried out on timber drying employing these three types of dryers in the Engineering Faculty are compiled and compared here in this paper. The results showed that the electric dryer produced the fastest drying lime and lowest moisture content, followed by dehumidifier drying. The solar dryer achieved a lower moisture content and a faster drying rate compared to natural drying, although the difference in drying times was marginal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the basic design of the GHE solar dryer and evaluates the performance of the dryer when used to dry vanilla pods. From laboratory test results it was indicated that the average drying time for vanilla pods was between 49 to 53, 5 hrs, for the case of heating augmentation using coal briquette stoves. The total amount of coal briquettes used to produce drying air temperature between 33 C to 65 C and RH of about 34% during day time was 61 kg equivalent to 6.1 kW heating rate and the average electric energy usage of 36.5 kWh, respectively. Quality test results indicated that the dried products were of grade IA of the export quality standard with vaniline content of 2.36%.  相似文献

Saffron is the most expensive spice and Iran is the largest producer of this crop in the world. Saffron quality is profoundly affected by the drying method. Recent research has shown that hybrid photovoltaic–thermal solar power systems are more efficient in comparison with individual photovoltaic and thermal systems. In addition, heat pump dryers are highly energy efficient. Furthermore, they are suitable for heat-sensitive crops such as saffron. Therefore, in the present study, the performance of a hybrid photovoltaic–thermal solar dryer equipped with a heat pump system was considered for saffron drying, in order to obtain a high-quality product and reduce fossil fuel consumption. The effect of air mass flow rate at three levels (0.008, 0.012, and 0.016 kg/s), drying air temperature at three levels (40, 50, and 60°C), and two different dryer modes (with and without the heat pump unit) on the operating parameters of the dryer was investigated. The results of the investigation showed that total drying time and energy consumption decreased as air flow rate and drying air temperature increased. Applying a heat pump with the dryer led to a reduction in the drying time and energy consumption and an increase in electrical efficiency of the solar collector. The average total energy consumption was reduced by 33% when the dryer was equipped with a heat pump. Maximum values for electrical and thermal efficiency of the solar collector were found to be 10.8 and 28%, respectively. A maximum dryer efficiency of 72% and maximum specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) of 1.16 were obtained at an air flow rate of 0.016 kg/s and air temperature of 60°C when using the heat pump.  相似文献

The novel low-cost band thermodynamic dryer equipped with a solar collector, a parabolic focusing collector, a heat exchanger, screw fan, and a drying cabinet with a band was designed and tested. The maximum temperature in the solar collector reached 85°C, which was 55°C above the ambient temperature. The required drying time was 4.5 h, much reduced from the traditional solar drying time of 48 h. The final moisture content of the Roselle calyx was 12% w.b., which is the recommended storage moisture content. Measurements of ambient temperature and humidity, air temperature, and relative humidity inside the dryer as well as solids moisture loss-in-weight data are employed as a means to study the performance of the dryer. Solar drying was compared with conventional sun drying and heated air drying, using the following evaluation criteria: drying time, dried Roselle color, texture, taste, and production cost. For evaluation, a model-based Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methodology was used. After the evaluation, the proposed continuous solar dryer was found to be better than conventional drying and heated air drying due to slower drying rate and better quality of the dried Roselle.  相似文献

This article presents experimental and simulated results of drying of peeled longan in a side-loading solar tunnel dryer. This new type of solar tunnel dryer consists of a flat-plate solar air heater and a drying unit with a provision for loading and unloading from windows at one side of the dryer. These are connected in series and covered with glass plates. A DC fan driven by a 15-W solar cell module supplies hot air in the drying system. To investigate the experimental performance, five full-scale experimental runs were conducted and 100 kg of peeled longan was dried in each experimental run. The drying air temperature varied from 32 to 76°C. The drying time in the solar tunnel dryer was 16 h to dry peeled longan from an initial moisture content of 84% (w.b.) to a final moisture content of 12% (w.b.), whereas it required 16 h of natural sun drying under similar conditions to reach a moisture content of 40% (w.b.). The quality of solar-dried product was also good in comparison to the high-quality product in markets in terms of color, taste, and flavor. A system of partial differential equations describing heat and moisture transfer during drying of peeled longan in this solar tunnel dryer was developed and this system of nonlinear partial differential equations was solved numerically by the finite difference method. The numerical solution was programmed in Compaq Visual FORTRAN version 6.5. The simulated results agreed well with the experimental data for solar drying. This model can be used to provide the design data and it is essential for optimal design of the dryer.  相似文献

To determine the performance of a conical spouted bed dryer for the drying of sludge waste, an experimental study of drying in a spouted bed regime was performed under different experimental conditions. The drying performance was determined based on the time evolution of solid moisture content, and the influence of operating conditions (inlet air temperature, air flow rate, and bed mass) on the drying rate of sludge waste in spouted beds of a conical geometry was analyzed.  相似文献

An even span solar greenhouse dryer was built and applied to dry Java tea (Orthosiphon aristatus) and Sabah snake grass (Clinacanthus nutans Lindau). Findings showed that the solar greenhouse dryer performs satisfactorily during clear weather except at nighttime and rainy day due to product rehydration which is heavily influenced by high relative humidity from ambient air. Integrating of heat pump into the solar greenhouse dryer has successfully reduced the room relative humidity by 10–15%. Also, heat pump has mitigated the product rehydration issue by maintaining room relative humidity at maximum of 65% throughout the drying period. The drying rate of Java tea was improved three to fourfold, i.e., from 0.004–0.008 to 0.018–0.025?g H2O/g DM min, whereas 10% of drying time was saved for both Java tea leaf and Sabah snake grass leaf with the assistance of heat pump system. Meanwhile, the supply of dry air from the heat pump system with a magnitude of 0.25–0.50?m/s helps in enhancing the drying rate of the herbs as well as minimizing the nonuniformity of drying temperature and relative humidity inside the solar greenhouse dryer.  相似文献

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON SOLAR DRYING OF FISH USING SOLAR TUNNEL DRYER   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
This paper presents field level performance of the solar tunnel dryer for drying of fish. The dryer consists of a transparent plastic covered flat plate collector and a drying tunnel connected in series to supply hot air directly into the drying tunnel using four d.c. fans, operated by two 40 watt solar modules. This dryer can be used to dry upto 150 kg of fish and three sets of full scale field level drying runs for drying silver jew (Johnius argentatus) fish were conducted in February-March, 1999. The temperature of the drying air at the collector outlet varied from 35.1 ° C to 52.2 ° C during drying. The fish was initially treated with dry salt and stacked for about 16 hours before drying. The salt treated fish was dried to a moisture content of 16.78% (w.b.) from 67% (w.b.) in 5 days of drying in solar tunnel dryer as compared to 5 days of drying in the traditional method for comparable samples to a final moisture content of 32.84%. In addtion, the fish dried in the solar tunnel dryer was completely protected from rain, insects and dust, and the dried fish was a high quality product.  相似文献

Flash drying of low rank coal with synthesis gas was addressed by using a pressurized down-flow dryer. The proposed method is a potential approach to secure gaseous water that is required in coal processing by utilizing moisture in the low rank coal. The drying process was promoted by increasing the initial temperature of the synthesis gas as a drying medium and decreasing the particle size of the coal. The moisture removal rate of the coal using synthesis gas at 9 bars and 500 °C reached up to 97% within ten seconds. Although it is a higher temperature than that of fixed bed or moving bed dryer, outlet moisture laden synthesis gas had the low level of tar enough to be a feedstock of downstream catalytic process due to the short residence time in the dryer. The chemical composition changes of the coal during the drying resulted in reducing oxygen content to the atomic ratio of oxygen to carbon as 0.1 and enhancing its calorific value. Disappearance of hydroxyl functional group from the surface and physical reduction of the surface area of the coal decreased the moisture re-adsorption capacity, which could prevent the spontaneous combustion of the low rank coal.  相似文献

A dynamic mathematical model for drying of agricultural products in an indirect cabinet solar dryer is presented. This model describes the heat and mass transfer in the drying chamber and also considers the heat transfer and temperature distribution in a solar collector under transient conditions. For this purpose, using conservation laws of heat and mass transfer and considering the physical phenomena occurring in a solar dryer, the governing equations are derived and solved numerically. The model solution provides an effective tool to study the variation of temperature and humidity of the drying air, drying material temperature, and its moisture content on each tray. The predicted results are compared with available experimental data. It is shown that the model can predict the performance of the cabinet solar dryer in unsteady-state operating conditions well. Furthermore, the effect of some operating parameters on the performance and efficiency of dryer is investigated and compared with selected published data.  相似文献

In this study, a new type of solar dryer was designed and manufactured. This new solar dryer is composed of a heat pipe collector, a drying chamber, a load cell, an air circulation fan, photovoltaic cells (PvC), batteries, and halogen lamps. In this experimental study, tomatoes were used to test the drying process. The drying air was heated by the heat pipe collector and forced through the tomatoes by a blower fan during the daytime. The photovoltaic cells, which were used to run the fan, were also used to charge the batteries during the day. These charged batteries were used for running the halogen lamps during the night, when the halogen lamps were used to heat the drying-air-assisted photovoltaic cells. During the drying period, the drying air temperature, relative humidity, air flow rates, solar radiation, and loss of mass were measured in the solar dryer. Then, the measured data were used for energy analysis.  相似文献

Lignite has been extensively used for electricity generation in many regions worldwide. However, its high water content has obviously negative effect on plant thermal efficiency. Performance of lignite-fired power plant can be improved by predrying the lignite before combustion. In addition, recovery of waste heat from the dryer and the power generation system will enhance the plant thermal efficiency further. In the present study, a new lignite predrying power generation system integrated with an efficient waste heat recovery system was proposed. Both dryer exhaust waste heat and steam turbine exhaust latent heat were recovered to heat boiler feed water. Energy analysis indicates that system performance is improved significantly. The plant thermal efficiency increases linearly with drying degree and then increases at a lower rate. The generation of unused dryer exhaust changes the variation tendency of system performance with drying degree.  相似文献

In present work, a closed-type clothes dryer with thermoelectric elements was developed. The looped air circulation was designed to simultaneously recycle waste heat and enhance dryer performance. A mathematical model of heat transfer, based on one-dimensional treatment of thermal and electric power, is conducted. The cooling and heating productions are both correlated in terms of electric resistance, thermal conductivity, and electric current. Experimental investigation on drying of clothes has been attempted, covering the drying air temperature, initial-input electric power, and total weight of wet clothes, with drying rate and specific moisture extraction rate as evaluating indexes. Generally, the drying rate was found to increase first and decrease afterwards as time decayed. Analytical and experimental results demonstrate that optimal performance of the thermoelectric dryer strongly depends on intensities of these operating parameters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Solar dryers have been considered for timber drying in a number of countries because of the expected savings in drying costs. From a review of past works on solar, natural, and conventional drying it was observed that while solar dryers were able to dry timber faster compared to natural drying, the difference was only marginal in some instances. The drying rates are expected to be dependent upon ambient conditions in which the dryera are operated. Solar dryers would operate more efficiently in countries with low humidity than in tropical regions. Thus the thermal performance and also the economics of solar dryer is country dependent. In the present paper, a comparison of the drying rates obtained with a solar dryer is made with that obtained with an electrically operated drying kiln.  相似文献

Three different solar drying methods were carried out on four different medicinal plants to investigate the benefits of using an unglazed transpired solar dryer (UTSD) over other traditional methods. Methods involved included drying in an unglazed transpired solar dryer (using suction air flow rate of 0.06 m3s?1), drying in the open air under direct sun rays and a common traditional drying method in a shaded drying house. The three drying methods were used to dry the following medicinal plants: henna (Lawsonia inermis L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), marjoram (Majorana hortensis L.), and moghat (Glossostemon bruguieri L.). Drying processes were carried out under the climatic weather conditions of Ismailia, Egypt. Drying rate, drying ratio, and the medicinal plants qualities in terms of oil quantity and sensation tests were considered. The results showed higher oil quantity obtained from rosemary and marjoram dried in the UTSD, compared with those dried in the shaded drying house and in the open air under direct sun.  相似文献

A mathematical model for mixed mode natural convection solar drying of maize grain is presented. The drying is described by a deep bed procedure that includes conduction within the grain bed. The conduction is due to radiative energy falling on the upper surface of the bed. The results show that temperatures at the top and bottom of the bed are higher than that in the middle resulting in two drying fronts one at the top and the other at the bottom of the bed and moving in opposite directions. This results in more uniform moisture content distribution than in an indirect dryer. The results are verified against experimental data from a prototype mixed mode natural convection maize solar dryer. The laboratory solar dryer was constructed at Newcastle University, U.K. and the experiments carried out under a solar simulator. The agreement between theory and experiment is very good.  相似文献
