Replies to comments by H. J. Eysenck, S. E. Taylor and J. D. Brown, and T. E. Joiner (see PA, Vols 5447; 5471; and 5454, respectively) on the argument by J. Schedler et al (see record 1994-09623-001) that standard mental health scales may not distinguish genuine from illusory mental health. Methodological issues (e.g., clinical judgment vs self-report measures) are addressed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

The publication of "The Skew in Clinical Psychology" by L. L. Levy (see record 1963-04084-001) led us to inspect the publication records of those who had received PhDs in industrial psychology from Western Reserve University. The group of clinical psychologists that Levy studied graduated between 1948 and 1953. During this period, Western Reserve granted only five degrees in industrial psychology. Consequently, we extended the period and included also 16 persons who received PhDs between 1954 and 1956. This additional group would thus have between five and seven years in which to publish and have the material listed in Psychological Abstracts. As Levy did, we considered only items listed in Psychological Abstracts, but did extend the period of coverage to include 1961, as well as the 1948 to 1960 period. The total publications for these two groups are shown in Table 1. The classification between predoctoral and postdoctoral is rather arbitrary and caused us some qualms. For these purposes, anything which was published in the year the PhD was received, or later, was considered postdoctoral, while anything published in a prior year was considered predoctoral. This resulted in a number of items being classified as postdoctoral, although the item had been prepared while the individual was a graduate student; and conversely, other items were relegated to the limbo of predoctoral publications, even though the individual concerned was senior author or, in some cases, sole author of a substantial research effort. The prior findings of skewed publication-distribution rates is borne out in this study. Apparently, if an individual is going to start publishing at all, it is most likely that he will begin fairly quickly after receiving his PhD. As is true for the clinical psychologist, the industrial psychologist has the conflicting role of being a practitioner, as well as a researcher. Most of Western Reserve's PhDs in industrial psychology are working in industry or in government, rather than in an academic setting. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Responds to the comments by F. Paniagua ("Kuhn's paradigmatic view of psychology and Skinner's theory of behavior." Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, 11, 1991, 122-125) on the current author's original article, "Meehl revisited: A look at paradigms in psychology" (Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 9, 1989, 30-36), in which the current author reviewed Paul Meehl's (see record 1979-25042-001) famous article "Theroetical risks and tabular asterisks: Sir Karl; Sir Ronald, and the slow progress of soft psychology." According to the current author, Paniagua takes exception to two casual remarks made in the current author's paper, one about Kuhn and the other about Skinner, but neither remark is related to the actual thesis. Paniagua's comments do not carry the substantive aspects of the article forward, which is unfortunate asserts the current author, because the theory discussed therein may prove useful in understanding the nature and evolution of psychology. Comments on "Nature of love--simplified" by Harlow and Suomi (see record 1970-15730-001). The comment notes that Harlow and Suomi omit a reference to Karl Bühler (1930), who discovered that very young crying infants could be quieted as well by contacts with a hot water bottle or soft cushion as by the mother's caresses. Comments on "Reforms as experiments" by D. T. Campbell (American Psychologist, 1969, Vol 24, 404-429, see record 1969-17253-001). Campbell's suggestions for an extension of experimental thinking into our legislatures could be the most important contribution that any psychologist has made to our society. Why not form an APA committee to confer with our colleagues in the social sciences to see whether institutions can be proposed to maximize the experimental approach to legislation? Replies to Hakel's (1968) study of frequency adverbs by noting that "often" may occasionally be "sometimes." Also discussed is B. E. Goocher's (1965) study of frequency adverbs, which found that Ss who disliked an activity described it as occurring more frequently than those who reported liking the activity. Since the publication of figures taken from the Statistical Abstract of the United States in the American Psychologist (1957, 12, 229-230), the writer received a number of requests for reprints which were not available. In order to satisfy these inquiries and to make the data more helpful, he has extended the table, which originally included only the years 1949-54, up to and including 1958. In the original Comment, the writer speculated on the reasons why the number of undergraduate degrees in psychology had dropped from 1950 to 1954. To the advocates of undergraduate specialization in psychology, it will be reassuring to note that the bachelor or first level degree, in point of numbers of men and women receiving it, has been on the rise ever since 1955 when it reached its lowest point. The number of master or second level degree recipients reached its lowest point in 1956 and has also risen since then but has not approached the peak year of 1951. The number of doctorates awarded since 1952 has remained more constant, especially since 1952, than the numbers receiving the first and second level degrees. N. S. Endler et al (see record 1979-26949-001) incorrectly reported that 12 schools included in their top 82 US psychology departments in terms of total citations were not included in K. D. Roose and C. J. Andersen's (1970) rating of graduate departments. Actually, 19 schools were omitted in Roose and Andersen's ratings. The 7 schools Endler et al omitted are identified. Responds to L. Waters's (1977) criticisms of D. R. Peterson's (see record 1977-30158-001) article advocating the PsyD, rather than the PhD, as the preferred professional degree. The PhD requirements for extensive work in research, statistics, and foreign language are omitted in the PsyD program in favor of work in biological aspects of psychological problems, professional development, behavior therapy, and other areas. Responds to E. Ubell's (see record 1984-05704-001) transformation of Herrnstein's mathematical statement of the law of effect from a hyperbolic to a linear function. This transformation of the relationship between response and reinforcement allows the law to be stated in terms of period rather than frequency. The present author argues that the linear and hyperbolic forms are not statistically interchangeable. (6 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

The author informs that a note in the Comment section of the December 1953 issue of this journal described how the Eastern Psychological Association recorded much of the material that was presented at its 1953 meeting and broadcast part of it over an educational FM station. The author feels that any activity that brings to the public a true picture of what a psychologist is, and does, is a commendable activity, but all these activities should be properly evaluated. Comments on the article by Benton et al (see record 2003-04125-010), which examined counseling center client problems across 13 years from the perspective of the treating therapist. The current author suggests that in their discussion of environmental and contextual factors, the original authors neglected broader national trends regarding those who attend college, as well as data related to psychiatric care for adolescents and young adults, and that interpreting the findings and putting together follow-up studies will most likely require consideration of some broader national trends. Comments on D. Bramel and R. Friend's (see record 1982-08638-001) interpretations of the Hawthorne studies of industrial workers and their criticisms of the subsequent work by E. Mayo and G. F. Lombard (1943). It is argued that Bramel and Friend were as selective in their criticisms as they accused F. J. Roethlisberger and W. J. Dickson (1939) of being in their interpretations of the Hawthorne effect. A psychological approach, rather than the ideological one adopted by Bramel and Friend, is recommended for future worker–management studies.
