Psychology for the public: A content analysis of Psychology Today..

Surveyed the extent to which Psychology Today (PT) has maintained an empirical basis for its articles and the degree to which psychologists and individuals with doctorates have been responsible for PT articles. Two samples of PT were selected for review by 2 raters (the present authors). Findings indicate that not only have PT articles significantly shifted away from a presentation of empirically based data, but the proportion of articles authored by psychologists, as well as the educational level of authors, has declined, particularly in the last 3 yrs. The Nature of Social and Personality Psychology as Reflected in JPSP, 1965-2000.

A bibliometric analysis of the first 36 years (1965-2000) of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (JPSP) is presented. The authors analyzed the structure of JPSP on the basis of contents and other aspects related to productivity, such as growth in the number of articles and authors, and "invisible colleges." In 2001, JPSP articles were cited over 23,000 times. An increasing number of older, classic articles are cited, suggesting that there are an accumulating number of citations whose influence endures over time. JPSP articles have grown in length, number of studies included, number of references, and number of authors and have become more international with an increasing proportion of authors from outside the United States. Soviet psychology in 1968.

Presents data based on a review of 59 articles published in Voprosy Psychologie (Problems of Psychology) between March and October 1968. Topics examined in the articles included physiological/neuropsychological problems, educational problems, problems of personality, speech problems and aphasias, politics, and animal psychology. Peer Review: An Overview.

In the context of professional psychology, peer review refers to an organized system of assessing quality of services and requires analysis and judgment of professional practice by other practitioners within the profession. This special issue on peer review and quality assurance represents a report on the status of developments in quality assurance within the mental health professions and emphasizes the major role of groups within the American Psychological Association (APA). The first set of articles discusses general issues in quality assessment. The next set of articles is specifically relevant to the progress and development of the Defense Department's Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) Project. The third section comprises a series of articles that describe the application of quality assurance methodology to a variety of service delivery settings. Other approaches to quality assessment and quality assurance are described in the final section. The editors hope that the articles in this special issue can assist the profession in achieving greater and more consistent effectiveness with the public it serves. Comparative psychology 25 years after.

Examined articles published in the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology (JCPP) and Animal Behavior (AB) in the 25 yrs since F. A. Beach first surveyed the literature in 1950. In the JCPP, the number of species studied remained relatively low in view of the greatly increased number of articles published, while the reverse was true of AB, whose articles were also more diversified in terms of number of species. Editor’s introduction: APA’s centennial year with the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

This American Psychological Association Centennial Feature celebrates the 100 year anniversary of APA as well as the 55th anniversary of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. This issue of JCCP kicks off our centennial celebration with the reproduction of two articles from the first issue of the Journal of Consulting Psychology. These two articles were originally published in 1937 and were the two lead articles of the issue. Aptly, the articles were written by the leading scholars of the day in the emerging field of clinical psychology and each respectively reflected on the past and future of the discipline. To place these articles in the context of the still evolving history of the field, each article is accompanied by a comment by an eminent, contemporary scholar. G. Stanley Hall's Adolescence: A centennial reappraisal: Introduction.

This article is an overview of the special issue "G. Stanley Hall's Adolescence: A Centennial Reappraisal." First, a brief biography of Hall is presented. Then each of the six articles in the special issue is summarized. Three of the articles are by historians and three are by psychologists, but all six articles integrate history and psychology. Publishing opinions: A note on the usefulness of commentaries.

Citation rates for 21 commentaries, the original articles, and the replies that were published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General between 1975 and 1980 were obtained and compared with citation rates for control articles, which were those that immediately preceded the original articles in the journal. It is concluded that although the commentaries were lengthy, they had little discernible effect on the subsequent literature. Guest editors’ reflections on a centennial series in process.

The decision to present articles celebrating the centennial of the American Psychological Association (APA) in issues of the Journal of Counseling Psychology throughout the year has had one major unintended, but we hope fortuitous, outcome. This outcome demands a more open exposure of our editorial process of conceptualizing, commissioning, and editing these articles than is typically the case. Had we planned to have all the articles appear in a single issue of the journal, we could have done what most editors probably do, that is, write the introduction after all of the articles had been submitted. Instead, we wrote the introduction at the beginning of the series, informing the reader of what we had planned. Because our original introduction, in retrospect, provides a fairly decontextualized and overly logical frame for the richness of the authors' contributions, we take this opportunity to reflect on contributions to date and to introduce a final article in the series, which we discovered to be missing. On the fit of models to covariances and methodology to the Bulletin..

Notes that 7 of the 10 top-cited articles in the Psychological Bulletin deal with methodological topics. One of these is the P. M. Bentler and D. G. Bonett (1980) article on the assessment of fit in covariance structure models. Some context is provided on the popularity of this article. In addition, a citation study of methodology articles appearing in the Bulletin since 1978 was carried out. It verified that publications in design, evaluation, measurement, and statistics continue to be important to psychological research. Graduate school origins of authors in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Reviewed the graduate school origins of authors who published articles in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology from 1960-1969. There were no striking regional differences in terms of where authors received their graduate training. Although the graduates of no single university dominated the clinical research, the 10 leading institutions granting degrees to authors in this journal did account for over 1/3 of the articles published during the decade. 97% of the leading degree-granting institutions had clinical training programs approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), and graduates of APA-approved programs accounted for 80.1% of the articles published. It is concluded that the results are consistent with those in related studies and that the major university producers of articles also tend to be training students that publish in this journal. Index of literature reviews and summaries in the Psychological Bulletin, 1967–1978.

Updates a previous compilation by T. Andrews and F. Kerr (1967) covering 1940–1966. Like the earlier index, the current one includes all articles that were wholly or largely reviews of a specialized area of literature, along with published comments on those review articles. Commentaries, opinions, and the growth of scientific knowledge.

Comments on J. J. Christensen-Szalanski and L. R. Beach's (see record 1984-21471-001) conclusion that the attention given to commentaries and replies to articles did not justify the extra space and indicates that less than 1% of all the articles that appeared in psychology journals had commentaries. Chi square revisited.

Comments on the article by D. Lewis and C. J. Burke (see record 1950-03506-001). Lewis and Burke showed, in careful detail, the various ways in which chi square could be computed incorrectly, and discussed the basic assumptions of this test of significance. We have surveyed the 1957, 1958, and 1959 volumes of the Journal of Experimental Psychology to ascertain what changes have occurred in the use of chi square since the publication of the Lewis and Burke article. During 1957-1959, 470 articles were published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. We found 49 articles where a contingency table chi square was involved. This is about the same relative number of chi squares (10%) as found by Lewis and Burke. A misuse of chi square was tallied, in the present study, only when there was clear evidence of error in the particular article. Of the final 47 articles where a judgment was possible, 30 (64%) contained correct chi square applications. In 16 articles (34%) there was a violation of the assumption of independent events. Although there is no change in the proportion of articles containing chi square applications from the 1944-1946 Lewis and Burke survey of the Journal of Experimental Psychology to the 1957-1959 survey, there is an apparent increase in the proportion of correctly used chi squares, from 21% to 64%. It is problematic as to how much this increase in accuracy is due to the direct influence of the Lewis and Burke article. Since about one-third of the chi square articles contained errors in analyzing dependent responses, there is still considerable room for improvement on the part of the investigators in applying chi square correctly to their data. A content analysis of the Journal of Counseling Psychology.

Classified articles and brief reports appearing in the 1st 19 volumes of the Journal of Counseling Psychology into 17 content categories and recorded certain methodological features from each research article. While the percentage of research articles in the journal increased, no clear trends were observed within any research category across the 19 yrs of publication. The 3 principal areas of research activity and publication were counseling outcome and process research, research on vocational behavior, and research on the development and evaluation of tests and measurements.
