Three experiments investigated associations between autobiographical memories and different types of concepts. Two types of concepts, goal-derived categories and taxonomic categories, were used to prime memory retrieval to related category exemplar cues. In all 3 experiments, only goal-derived categories were found to reliably speed memory retrieval. Weak associations between speed of memory retrieval and both the specificity and the personal importance of the memory were found; memories that were high in these qualities were retrieved more quickly than memories low in these qualities, and this was independent of the type of cue used to prompt retrieval. These findings demonstrate that goal-derived categories are closely associated in long-term memory with records of specific experiences. Testing previously studied information enhances long-term memory, particularly when the information is successfully retrieved from memory. The authors examined the effect of unsuccessful retrieval attempts on learning. Participants in 5 experiments read an essay about vision. In the test condition, they were asked about embedded concepts before reading the passage; in the extended study condition, they were given a longer time to read the passage. To distinguish the effects of testing from attention direction, the authors emphasized the tested concepts in both conditions, using italics or bolded keywords or, in Experiment 5, by presenting the questions but not asking participants to answer them before reading the passage. Posttest performance was better in the test condition than in the extended study condition in all experiments—a pretesting effect—even though only items that were not successfully retrieved on the pretest were analyzed. In three experiments we examined the nature of the search for antecedents during reading. Subjects read passages that contained two possible antecedents: one appearing early in the passages and the other appearing late. The degree of elaboration was varied, with one antecedent receiving additional elaboration for half the passages and the other antecedent receiving additional elaboration for the remaining half. Reading time differences from the first two experiments demonstrated that late antecedents are reinstated more quickly than early antecedents and elaborated antecedents are reinstated more quickly than nonelaborated antecedents. Experiment 1 showed that concepts that fall in the path of an antecedent search can be activated by the search. Experiments 2 and 3 showed that this activation is restricted to concepts that are from the same general category as the target antecedent. The theory-based model of categorization posits that concepts are represented as theories, not feature lists. Thus, it is interesting that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV, American Psychiatric Association, 1994) established atheoretical guidelines for mental disorder diagnosis. Five experiments investigated how clinicians handled an atheoretical nosology. Clinicians' causal theories of disorders and their responses on diagnostic and memory tasks were measured. Participants were more likely to diagnose a hypothetical patient with a disorder if that patient had causally central rather than causally peripheral symptoms according to their theory of the disorder. Their memory for causally central symptoms was also biased. Clinicians are cognitively driven to use theories despite decades of practice with the atheoretical DSM. Seeing one's hand in visual periphery has been shown to optimize the directional accuracy of a sweeping hand movement, which is consistent with J. Paillard's (1980; Paillard and B. Amblard, 1985) two-channels model of visual information processing. However, contrary to this model, seeing one's hand in central vision, even for a brief period of time, also resulted in optimal directional accuracy. In 3 experiments, this study tested two opposing hypotheses proposed to explain the latter finding, and also determined whether additional support could be found for the existence of a visual kinetic channel. Results indicated that seeing one's hand in central vision, even for a very short delay, resulted in the same accuracy as being permitted to see one's hand for the duration of the whole movement. This suggests that seeing one's hand around the target might enable one to code its location and that of the target within a single frame of reference and, thus, facilitate movement planning. In addition, seeing one's hand in motion while in visual periphery permitted a better directional accuracy than when this information was not available, suggesting that the movement vector, which is planned prior to movement initiation, can be quickly updated following movement initiation. In 3 experiments, the authors tested the assumption that perceived movements toward a person trigger the approach system and thereby facilitate the processing of positive affective concepts, whereas perceived movements away from a person trigger the avoidance system and thereby facilitate the processing of negative affective concepts. In the 1st study, participants categorized positive words more quickly than negative words while flexing the arm and negative words more quickly than positive words while extending the arm. The 2nd study revealed that positive words were categorized more rapidly than negative words if viewers had the impression that they were moving toward the computer screen, whereas negative words were categorized faster if viewers had the impression that they were moving away from the screen. Three experiments examined transfer of reading fluency across repeated readings of the same text and across related but different texts with a total of 102 college students. In Exp 1, it was found that a paraphrase that altered the syntactic structure of sentences but not the lexical identity of main concepts or the unfolding of the message was reprocessed as an unchanged repetition. However, when the paraphrase altered the lexical identity of main concepts, there was a loss in the repetition benefit. In Exps 2 and 3, there was transfer from a representation of 1 text to the reading of a 2nd text only if the messages were continuous. In 4 experiments, the author explored the spontaneous construction of spatial situation models during discourse comprehension by using the sentence-recognition paradigm of J. D. Bransford, J. R. Barclay, and J. J. Franks (1972). In Experiment 1, signaling causal relevance of spatial relations was a necessary precondition for replicating their original finding of spontaneously constructed spatial representations. Causal relevance was ensured in the subsequent experiments by a judgment task indirectly demanding the evaluation of described spatial relations with regard to causal relevance. Participants spontaneously constructed spatial situation models of text presented auditorily or visually. Effects of spontaneous construction were more reliable when encoding was easier. The results suggest a revised interpretation of J. D. Bransford et al.'s study and corroborate recent evidence showing that relevant spatial information in texts is reliably represented. In 5 experiments, it was found that judging the relative location of 2 contours was more difficult when they belonged to 2 objects rather than 1. This was observed even when the 1- and 2-object displays were physically identical, with perceptual set determining how many objects they were seen to contain. Such a 2-object cost is consistent with object-based views of attention and with a hierarchical scheme for position coding, whereby object parts are located relative to the position of their parent object. In further experiments, it was shown that in accord with this hierarchical scheme, the relative location of objects could disrupt judgments of the relative location of object parts, but the reverse did not occur. Three experiments involving a total of 36 undergraduates required Ss to make a speeded decision about a central target letter embedded in a 5-letter string. On each trial the identity of the near or far letters was either compatible or incompatible with the correct response, while the remaining letters were neutral. In contrast to the findings of J. Driver and G. C. Baylis (see record 1990-00258-001), when the far distractors and the target moved together while the near distractors remained stationary, it was not found that the flanker compatibility effect (FCE) of the far distractors was greater than the FCE for the stationary near distractors. The pattern of response latencies in this moving condition were not different from what was observed when all letters remained stationary. Accuracy was affected, but not in the direction predicted by the view that attention is directed to perceptual groups. Four experiments examined how readers integrate subordinate information with relevant context as they read. Ss read texts a sentence at a time with occasional interruptions lasting 30 sec. Following a distractor task, they resumed reading after being reminded of the topic sentence of the last paragraph they read (topic cue condition), being reminded of the last sentence they had read (local cue condition), or receiving no reminder of what they had been reading (no cue condition). Reading times on the 1st sentence following interruption were faster in the topic and local cue conditions than in the no cue condition (1) when the topic and local cues supplied missing referents for the target sentences, (2) when the target sentences were written to be understood as independent statements, and (3) whether the target sentences were embedded in short or long texts. Results are interpreted as demonstrating that readers integrate subordinate information with relevant topics, as well as with the immediate local context. Object substitution masking occurs when a lateral mask persists beyond the duration of a target, reflecting reentrant processes in vision (V. Di Lollo, J. Enns, & R. Rensink, 2000). The authors studied whether substitution masking is location specific and whether it is symmetric around the target. A brief circular display of letters was presented along with a mask that designated the target. The mask was centered on the target or 1.1° to the central or to the peripheral side. Substitution masking was found even when the target and the mask were at different locations. It was asymmetric and stronger when the mask was to the peripheral side of the target than to the central side. Asymmetric substitution was observed using various masks. It could not be explained by retina acuity gradients and was not attenuated by focused attention. The authors propose that target selection triggers an asymmetric inhibitory surround that is stronger toward the central side of the target. Explored the finding by J. E. Newman and G. S. Dell (see record 1981-00233-001) that the time needed to detect a target phoneme in a phoneme monitoring task increased when the preceding word contained a phoneme similar to the target. In 3 experiments, 58 undergraduates who were native speakers of English monitored auditorily presented sentences and responded as quickly as possible whenever they detected a specified phoneme. Preceding word-initial phonemes, despite being processed more quickly, increased the response latency to the following target phoneme more than did preceding word-medial phonemes. There was also an increase in response latency even when the S could be highly certain that the similar preceding phoneme was not an instance of the target phoneme. It is argued that the interference effects are due to fundamental characteristics of perceptual processing and that more time is needed to categorize the target phoneme. A computer simulation using an interactive activation model of speech perception is presented to demonstrate the plausibility of this explanation. Increasing cue duration impairs performance in bar-probe partial report when cues are presented peripherally, but not centrally (P. Dixon, R. Gordon, A. Leung, & V. Di Lollo, 1997). Three experiments examined whether this cue-duration effect reflects processes of exogenous attention. The effect of cue duration on partial report performance with peripheral, but not central, cues was replicated (Experiment 1). Further experiments manipulated the degree that exogenous versus endogenous modes of selection were favored and found that the cue-duration effect for peripheral cues was reduced (1) when blocks contained a high proportion of central cues (Experiment 2) and (2) when the color of the cue indicated the location of the target (Experiment 3). These findings challenge the view that the cue-duration effect is restricted to exogenous attention and are discussed in terms of the process of disengaging attention from the cue to reallocate attention to the target representation. Six experiments investigated the nature of the object-file representation supporting object continuity. Participants viewed preview displays consisting of 2 stimuli (either line drawings or words) presented within square frames, followed by a target display consisting of a single stimulus (either a word or a picture) presented within 1 of the frames. The relationship between the target and preview stimuli was manipulated. The first 2 experiments found that participants responded more quickly when the target was identical to the preview stimulus in the same frame (object-specific priming). In Experiments 3, 4, 5, and 6, the physical form of the target stimulus (a word or picture in 1 frame) was changed completely from that of either preview stimulus (pictures or words in both frames). Despite this physical change, object-specific priming was observed. It is suggested that object files encode postcategorical information, rather than precise physical information. Exposure to the central ideas of the discipline is a primary pedagogical goal of introductory psychology. In this study, key concepts were identified in six introductory psychology textbooks. Of these, 377 concepts were included in at least five of six texts, forming the core of introductory psychology. If a unanimity criterion is adopted, the set is reduced to 197 concepts. These concepts were compared to lists from Zechmeister and Zechmeister (2000), Landrum (1993), and Quereshi (1993). Fifty-eight concepts were common to all four studies and were unevenly distributed among the major subdisciplines within psychology. Discussion focuses on the disparity of consensus across topics, the potential theoretical and practical value in hierarchical concept analyses, and "top-down" construction of a core for introductory psychology. In 7 experiments, approximately 700 college and high school students studied texts containing either adjunct application or adjunct factual questions. Ss were then tested for their ability to apply the presented concepts. Across the 7 studies, 5 found no significant differences between factual and application questions, and 2 found a superiority for factual questions. A comparison with previous studies investigating the same variable suggests that a chance model most parsimoniously explains the data. This analysis suggested that type of adjunct question exerts little influence on students' later ability to apply presented concepts. Seven experiments investigated the finding that threatening schematic faces are detected more quickly than nonthreatening faces. Threatening faces with v-shaped eyebrows (angry and scheming expressions) were detected more quickly than nonthreatening faces with A-shaped eyebrows (happy and sad expressions). In contrast to the hypothesis that these effects were due to perceptual features unrelated to the face, no advantage was found for v-shaped eyebrows presented in a nonfacelike object. Furthermore, the addition of internal facial features (the eyes, or the nose and mouth) was necessary to produce the detection advantage for faces with v-shaped eyebrows. Overall, the results are interpreted as showing that the v-shaped eyebrow configuration affords easy detection, but only when other internal facial features are present. Visual attention research has revealed that attentional allocation can occur in space- and/or object-based coordinates. Using the direct and elegant design of R. Egly, J. Driver, and R. Rafal (1994), the present experiments tested whether space- and object-based inhibition of return (IOR) emerge under similar time courses. The experiments were capable of isolating both space- and object-based effects induced by peripheral and back-to-center cues. The results generally support the contention that spatially nonpredictive cues are effective in producing space-based IOR at a variety of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) and under a variety of stimulus conditions. Whether facilitatory or inhibitory in direction, the object-based effects occurred over a very different time course than did the space-based effects. Reliable object-based IOR was only found under limited conditions and was tied to the time since the most recent cue (peripheral or central). The finding that object-based effects are generally determined by SOA from the most recent cue may help to resolve discrepancies in the IOR literature. These findings also have implications for the search facilitator role that IOR is purported to play in the guidance of visual attention.
