The composition of phenolic acids in various parts of mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana) was determined by GC and MS. The total content of phenolic acids, identified by GC-FID ranged from 265.7 ± 12.7 (aril) to 5027.7 ± 188.0 (peel) mg per kg of dry matter of sample. Ten phenolic acids were identified in mangosteen fruit. Of these, protocatechuic acid was the major phenolic acid in the peel and rind, while p-hydroxybenzoic acid was the predominant phenolic acid in the aril. m-Hydroxybenzoic acid was detected only in the peel, while 3,4-dihydroxymandelic was present only in the rind. The phenolic acids liberated from esters and glycosidic bonds were the major fractions of phenolic acids in mangosteen fruit.  相似文献

Tannins and phenolic acids were extracted from Uapaca kirkiana unripe pulp, seed coat, peel and embryo, as well as from ripe pulp, seed coat, embryo and peel portions of the fruit. Extraction was done using 50% methanol. More tannins were detected in the embryos of both ripe and raw fruit. Both ripe and raw seed coat contained the least amounts of tannins. The flavanoids and gallotannins also followed the same trend, with most of them in the embryos of both, the ripe and raw, fruit portions whilst the least were found in the seed coat. Tannins were, however lost during sun-drying compared to oven-drying, even though the differences were not very large. Also, raw fruits showed high concentrations of tannins compared to the ripe fruits. Hydroxybenzoic acid was found in the peel and pulp but none was detected in the seed coat or in the embryo. Similar phenolic acids were detected in the seed coat, except for caffeic acid and protocatechuic acid, detected in the embryo by both the UV florescence and Folin spray.  相似文献

The antioxidant potentials of buntan pumelo (Citrus grandis Osbeck) and its fermented products were determined. The essential oil from peel had higher total phenolic (214 mM) and flavonoid (134 mg QE/g of dried material) contents than those of different solvent extracts from fruit pulp. In addition, DPPH free radical-scavenging activity and ferric-reducing antioxidant power values determined for the essential oil were 26.1 ± 1.2% and 2.3 ± 0.3 mM, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of various fruit pulp extracts. The ethanol-fermented products of pumelo juice had higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents than those of fresh juice. For maintenance of the substantial antioxidant properties of pumelo products, ethanol-fermented juice rather than fresh or acetate-fermented juice is recommended. Through correlation analysis, the phenolic compounds in the fermented pumelo products were found to be the major contributors to the free radical-scavenging activity and ferric-reducing power.  相似文献

Annona crassiflora, known commonly as araticum, is an exotic tropical fruit consumed mainly by native people of the Brazilian Cerrado (2nd biggest biome of Brazil). In this study, pulp, seed, and peel of slight ripe and overripe fruits were extracted using ethanol and water. The extracts showed high content of total phenols and were screening for their potential as antioxidants using the in vitro model 1,1‐ dipheniyl‐2‐picryl hydrazyl (DPPH). The ethanol extracts of peel and seeds showed IC50 of 48.82 μg/mL and 31.14 μg/mL, respectively, for the slightly ripe fruits. As the ethanolic fractions of araticum showed the highest antioxidant activity, they were selected for testing of its effect on lipid peroxidation. The ethanolic extracts of slightly ripe fruits showed IC50 of 4.44 μg/mL, 1.72 μg/mL, and 8.62 μg/mL for the peel, seed, and pulp, respectively. This is the 1st report on the antioxidant properties of the extracts of araticum. Owing to these properties, the studies can be further extending to exploit them for their possible application as natural antioxidant for cosmetic, supplements, and functional ingredients for food products.  相似文献

Mangifera pajang (family: Anacardiaceae; local name: bambangan) and Artocarpus odoratissimus (familiy: Moraceae; local name: tarap) are popular edible fruits in Sabah, Malaysia. The flesh, kernel and peel from M. pajang; seed and flesh from A. odoratissimus were analysed for total antioxidant activity, total polyphenol, total flavonoid and total anthocyanins contents. M. pajang kernel extract displayed the highest free radical scavenging and ferric reducing activities. Total phenolic content of the samples were in the range of 5.96–103.3 mg gallic acid equivalent/g. M. pajang kernel and M. pajang flesh contained the highest and lowest total flavonoid content with the values of 10.98 and 0.07 mg rutin equivalent/g, respectively. The antioxidant activities of extracts were significantly correlated with the total phenolic and flavonoid content (but not the anthocyanins content). The phytochemicals and antioxidant properties of M. pajang and A. odoratissimus, especially their by-products (kernel/seed), indicate that they may impart health benefits when consumed and should be regarded as a valuable source of antioxidant-rich nutraceuticals.  相似文献

Carotenoids were isolated and identified from peel, pulp and seed fractions of Canarium odontophyllum Miq., and their antioxidant capacities were evaluated. all-trans-β-carotene was present in a large amount in peel (69.5 ± 1.0 mg/kg), followed by pulp (31.1 ± 0.76 mg/kg) and seed (15.1 ± 3.0 mg/kg). Additionally, 15-cis-β-carotene, 9-cis-β-carotene and 13-cis-β-carotenes were also major contributors to carotenoid contents in peel, pulp and seed fractions. Pulp exhibited excellent β-carotene bleaching activity, significantly higher than peel and seed; high 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity, whereas peel exhibited significantly higher scavenging activity of 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals. All the extracts exhibited good inhibitory effect against hydrogen peroxide-induced haemoglobin oxidation, ranging from 45.3 to 59.7%. This is the first report about carotenoids and antioxidant capacities from C. odontophyllum fruit, and indicates that this fruit can be explored and promoted as a potential source of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

The chemical composition and antioxidant activities of the Korean cactus (Opuntia humifusa, OH) fruit were investigated in this study. Major minerals in the OH fruit were P, Ca, and Mg. Total dietary fiber content was 22.8% and the soluble dietary fiber/insoluble dietary fiber ratio was 1:1.3. An 80% ethanol extract was used to investigate antioxidant activities based on DPPH radical scavenging ability as well as total phenolic and flavonoid content. OH fruit extract from 80% ethanol was sequentially fractionated according to the polarity of solvents. Among various fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antioxidant activity as well as the highest total phenolic and total flavonoid contents compared to other fractions. The most abundant phenolic acid in the ethyl acetate fraction was ferulic acid, followed by protocatechuic acid. The most abundant flavonoid was taxifolin, followed by myricetin. The results suggested that OH fruit could be a good potential source of antioxidant.  相似文献

Sour prickly pears (xoconostles) are fruits from Opuntia joconostle cactus, which are cultivated in the central Mexico area. Phenolic and pigment content in various parts of O. joconostle fruits were analyzed. The antioxidant activity of a methanolic extraction and different semi-purified fractions were also evaluated by the DPPH+ method. Xoconostle fruits were obtained from a commercial orchard in Mexico State. Fruits were analyzed as whole fruit and each fruit part including pericarp, mesocarp and endocarp. Samples were homogenized and kept at 4 °C until sample preparation. Total phenolic content and total flavonoid content varied among the different parts of the fruit. The highest amount of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids content were found in pericarp 2.07 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g fresh weight (FW) and 0.46 mg(+)-catechin equivalents (CE)/g FW respectively. Seven phenolics were identified as protocatechuic, 4-hydroxybenzoic, caffeic, vanillic and syringic acids, rutin, and quercetin. The color of the fruit parts was mainly due to the presence of betacyanins. The betacyanin concentration was higher in the endocarp (23.03 mg betanin equivalents/100 g fresh weight) than in the pericarp and mesocarp. Betacyanins were identified by HPLC-PDA-MS as betanin, isobetanin, betanidin, isobetanidin, and phyllocactin. Methanolic extracts and semi-purified fractions A (phenolics and flavonols) and B (betacyanins) of xoconostle showed high antioxidant activity mainly in the pericarp. These results suggest that xoconostle is a rich source of antioxidant compounds such as phenolic compounds and betacyanins.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Growing interest in the replacement of synthetic food antioxidants by natural ones has fostered research on vegetable sources and screening of raw materials to identify new antioxidants. The food‐processing industry generates substantial quantities of phenolic‐rich by‐products that could be valuable natural sources of antioxidants. In this study the antioxidant properties and total phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol contents of three industrial by‐products, sugar beet pulp, sesame cake and potato peel, extracted with various solvents were examined. Since different antioxidant compounds have different mechanisms of action, several methods were used to assess the antioxidant efficacy of extracts. RESULTS: Among the six solvents tested, methanol gave the highest extract yield of potato peel and sugar beet pulp, while diethyl ether gave the highest extract yield of sesame cake. Methanol exhibited the highest extraction ability for phenolic compounds, with total phenolics amounting to 2.91, 1.79 and 0.81 mg gallic acid equivalent g?1 dry weight in potato peel, sugar beet pulp and sesame cake extracts respectively, and also showed the strongest antioxidant capacity in the three assays used. All three methods proved that potato peel extract had the highest antioxidant activity owing to its high content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. CONCLUSION: On the basis of the results obtained, potato peel, sugar beet pulp and sesame cake extracts could serve as natural antioxidants owing to their significant antioxidant activity. Therefore they could be used as preservative ingredients in the food and/or pharmaceutical industries. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The phenolic profiles of six varieties of avocado (Persea americana) grown in Sicily were investigated. The ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-heated electrospray-mass spectrometry method was developed to determine qualitative and quantitative changes in fruits at two different ripening stage. Nineteen individual phenolic compounds were detected in avocado pulp extracts. Gallic acid, sinapinic acid, vanillin, p-coumaric acid, and gentisic acid were present only in ripe fruits. On the contrary, epicatechin decreased with fruit ripening, whereas protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, and benzoic acid were relatively stable or exhibited erratic changes with fruit ripening. The different avocado cultivars exhibited different phenolic profiles and total quantities and it was found that, among the tested cultivars, “Orotawa” avocados may provide the highest nutritional and health contribution to human diet. The qualitative and quantitative differences among cultivars and maturation stages by multivariate analysis allowed for the individuation of a set of phenolic compounds that have a great potential in the discrimination and identification of different genetic groups.  相似文献

Peel and seeds of red-skinned passion fruit, mango, longan, rambutan, white-flesh and red-flesh dragon fruit were screened for their in vitro antioxidant activity, and determination of a detailed profile of phenolic compounds. Rambutan peel and mango seed extracts exhibited the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP values). By using UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis, the profiles of soluble and bound phenolics in the fruit by-products were obtained. Ellagic acid, geraniin, quercetin hexoside, gallic and galloyshikimic acid were predominant in rambutan peel, whereas, mangiferin, ellagic acid and galloy(di)glucoside were the major phenolic compounds in mango seed. Main phenolic compounds in longan peel were ellagic acid, galloyldiglucoside, and gallic acid, while in dragon fruit peel this was isorhamnetin glycoside, isorhamnetin glucorhamoside. Meanwhile, rutin and quercetin hexoside were predominant in passion fruit peel. These findings contribute significantly to the database of phenolic profiles of by-products of tropical fruits.  相似文献

Four underutilized Georgia-grown fruit crops, namely loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), mayhaw (Crataegus sp.), fig (Ficus carica), and pawpaw (Asimina triloba), and their leaves were analysed for total polyphenols by Folin–Ciocalteau method, and antioxidant capacity by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assays. Organic acids and phenolic compounds were identified by RP-HPLC. For lipid profile, fruits were separated into two fractions – seed and fruit (i.e., without seed); lipid was extracted using the Folch method and analysed for fatty acids, phytosterols, tocopherols, and phospholipids. The major organic acid identified in all samples was malic acid (177–1918 mg/100 g FW). The predominant phenolic acids in all the fruits were gallic (1.5–6.4 mg/100 g FW) and ellagic (0.2–33.8 mg/100 g FW), and the most abundant flavonoid was catechin (12.2–37.8 mg/100 g FW). Total lipid content varied from 0.1% in mayhaw fruit to 21.5% in pawpaw seed. Linoleic acid was the predominant fatty acid in all of the samples (28.2–55.7%).  相似文献

Phenolic compounds in oil palm fruit (E. guineensis) were extracted in soluble free (SFP), insoluble-bound (ISBP) and esterified (EFP) forms. The total phenolic content (TPC) of the oil palm fruit extracts was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method and found to range from 5.03 to 9.04 g/L per g of dried weight (DW). The antioxidant activities of oil palm phenolic extracts were analysed using free radical scavenging assays and results showed that oil palm phenolic extracts contained antioxidant activities in the order of ISBP > EFP > SFP. Eight different phenolic acids were identified and quantified using a simple reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a diode array detector (DAD) and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Ferulic, p-hydroxybenzoic and p-coumaric acid were the dominant phenolic acids found in oil palm fruit extracts and ranged from 55 to 376 μg/g of DW.  相似文献

The nutritional and antioxidant properties of peels, pulp and seeds of kembayau (Dacryodes rostrata) fruits were evaluated. Kembayau seeds and pulp were rich in fat, while peels had the highest ash contents. Potassium was the most prevalent mineral in peels (380.72-1112.00 mg/100 g). In kembayau fruits, total flavonoid content (1012.74-28,022.28 mg rutin equivalent/100 g) was higher than total phenolic and total monomeric anthocyanin contents. Kembayau seeds exhibited high flavonoid and phenolic contents compared to the contents in peels and pulp. Antioxidant capacities were also higher in seeds as typified by trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assay (51.39-74.59 mmol TE/100 g), ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (530.05-556.98 mmol Fe2+/100 g) and by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical scavenging activity (92.18-92.19%) when compared to peels and pulp. Pulp and peels of kembayau fruit may be an important source of energy and minerals for human consumption, while seeds have a good potential as antioxidants.  相似文献

The medlar fruit (Mespilus germanica L.) has been gaining commercial importance in recent years, attracting research on its chemical composition. In this study, we have investigated how the degree of ripeness affects the concentrations and proportions of phenolic acids. The DPPH scavenging activity and the total phenolic content (TPC) were determined. Five stages of fruit maturity were studied and eight phenolic acids (protocatechuic, 4-hydroxybenzoic, syringic, 3-hydroxybenzoic, caffeic, salicylic, 4-coumaric and sinapic) were determined by HPLC–MS. The concentrations of phenolic acids mostly decreased as the fruit ripening progressed, except for insoluble ester-bound phenolics, which increased at the early stages of maturity and decreased only during the ripe to over-ripe stage of maturity. The DPPH scavenging activity also decreased during fruit maturation, suggesting a decrease of natural antioxidants in fruit. A strong correlation between TPC and antioxidant capacity measured by the DPPH method was found. The data presented demonstrates the influence of ripening on the phenolic acid content and antioxidant properties of medlar fruit.  相似文献

Polyphenols and anthocyanins were extracted from Kadsura coccinea fruit. The contents of total phenolics and anthocyanins, influences of pH and temperature on anthocyanins, and antioxidant activities of extracts were further analyzed. The results showed that the total phenolic content of peel extracts was superior to that of pulp extracts. The total anthocyanin content of peel extracts was 180 ± 2.91 mg/100 g of fresh peel tissues. K. coccinea anthocyanins were stable below pH 4, whilst high temperature and extended heating time induced their degradation. Metal-chelating capacity (MCC) assay indicated that no ortho-dihydroxy aromatic moiety existed in the B-ring of the anthocyanin molecules, but there might be a catechol group in the B-ring of the polyphenol molecules. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity and reducing power of extracts decreased in the following order: peel polyphenol extracts > anthocyanin extracts > pulp polyphenol extracts. It would be worthwhile to introduce this rare fruit into more countries.  相似文献

The present work investigated the phenolic profiles (including nonanthocyanin and anthocyanin phenolics), antioxidant activities, and neuroprotective potential of mulberry fruit (MF) (Morus atropurpurea Roxb.) grown in China at different ripening stages. High‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry method (HPLC‐MS/MS) was used to identify and quantify the phenolic compounds. The antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and total monomeric anthocyanin content (TAC) were determined using spectrophotometric methods. The neuroprotective effects of MFs at different ripening stages were investigated using Aβ25‐35‐treated PC12 cells as the cellular model of Alzheimer's disease. Of the 19 phenolic compounds characterized from the MF extracts, the contents of rutin and anthocyanins increased and that of chlorogenic acid decreased significantly with maturity. At the fully ripened stage, MF extracts showed the highest amounts of TPC (11.23 mg gallic acid equivalents/g fresh weight), TFC (15.1 mg rutin equivalents/g fresh weight), and TAC (1177 mg cyanidin 3‐O‐glucoside equivalents/100 g fresh weight). Meanwhile, antioxidant activity of MF extracts at this stage was highest according to ABTS (an IC50 value of 4.11 μg/mL) and DPPH (an IC50 value of 10.08 μg/mL) assays. Cellular assays revealed increased cell viability in cells treated with the ripe MF extracts; compared with the control groups, the ripening fruits also increased the antioxidant enzyme levels in PC12 cells. Together, these results suggest that the antioxidant activities and neuroprotective properties of ripening MFs are related to the contents and types of phenolic compounds that are present in the fruits.  相似文献

The antioxidant concentrations and activities of tangerines, yuja, lemons, and oranges in the Korean marketplace have been investigated. Flesh and peel tissues of the fruit were analyzed. The total vitamin C, total phenolics, flavonoid, hesperidin, and total antioxidant activity of all citrus types were higher in peel than flesh tissues. Total phenolic concentrations of flesh tissues were in the following order: lemon>yuja>tangerine>orange, while those concentrations in the peel were tangerine >yuja>orange>lemon. Lemon and yuja had higher hesperidin concentrations in flesh and peel tissues, respectively. Among the flesh samples, the total flavonoid and total phenolic concentrations were highly related with total antioxidant activity. The relationship between flavonoid and hesperidin was also strong among flesh and peel tissues. Our results indicate that citrus fruit includes high antioxidant compounds and activity and that citrus peel could be a good source of food ingredients.  相似文献

Phytochemical compounds in fruits and vegetables have gained great importance in the last few years because of the increasing evidence suggesting their antioxidant and prevention of chronic diseases. Carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamins E and C, are among these phytochemicals. Several fruits have been characterized so far for their antioxidant and health properties but there is still limited information on fruits from the tropic. Therefore, the objective of this study was the characterization of mamey fruit (Pouteria sapota Jacq. H. E. Moore & Stearn) with regard to their antioxidant capacity and phytochemical profile. Phenolics, carotenoids and ??-tocopherol were quantified and identified by HPLC-DAD-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), and DPPH and FRAP assays were used to evaluate antioxidant capacity. Hydrophilic extracts of mamey fruit showed higher antioxidant capacity than the lipophilic portion. Total soluble phenols content was 28.5 mg GAE/100 g fw, being p-hydroxybenzoic acid as the main phenolic that was identified. Total carotenoid content was 1127.9 ??g ??-carotene/100 g fw with ??-carotene being the main contributor, in addition to lutein, and violoxanthin. Concentration of ??-tocopherol was 360.0 ??g/100 g fw. Results of this study suggest that mamey fruit is a good source of carotenoids and its inclusion in the diet is recommended.  相似文献
