Non-enzymatic antioxidant activities of aqueous extract, 50% ethanol extract and 75% ethanol extract of glossy privet fruit were examined. Aqueous and ethanol extracts contained various concentrations of phenolic acids, flavonoids, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. Each extract scavenged superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide (P < 0.05) in a concentration-dependent manner and the effect of 75% ethanol extract was significantly greater than other extracts (P < 0.05). Each extract showed a concentration-dependent effect on chelating effect, xanthine oxidase inhibition activity and reducing power (P < 0.05). Compared with controls, each extract significantly decreased malondialdehyde formation in low density lipoprotein (LDL) and 8-epi-PGF formation in plasma (P < 0.05). Aqueous extract exerted a greater effect than ethanol extract on increasing catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities in plasma (P < 0.05). These data suggest that using glossy privet fruit extracts may enhance lipid stability in food systems, and provide antioxidative protection for LDL and plasma.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to examine the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of separated essential oils and different solvent extracts of Thymus praecox subsp. skorpilii var. skorpilii (TPS). The ethanol, acetone, methanol, hexane, aqueous extracts and separated essential oils of TPS were assessed for their antioxidant activities. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by reduction of Mo(VI) to Mo(V), reducing power, superoxide scavenging activity, free radical-scavenging activity, metal chelating activity, linoleic acid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and peroxide scavenging activity. Essential oils were characterized in total to be 41 components, whereas 9 components were isolated by column chromatography for antioxidant activity. TPS essential oil was found to contain thymol (40.31%) and o-cymene (13.66%) as the major components. The ethanol, methanol and water extracts exerted significant free radical-scavenging activity. The methanol and water extracts displayed highest superoxide scavenging activity. The water extract has the highest total phenolics (6.211 mg gallic acid (GAE)/g DW) and flavonoids (0.809 mg quercetin/g DW).  相似文献

The study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activities of extract of Usnea ghattensis. The antioxidant activity, reducing power, superoxide anion radical scavenging and free radical scavenging activities were studied. The antioxidant activity increased with the increasing amount of extracts (2-20 mg/ml) added to the linoleic acid emulsion. Lipid peroxidation upto 73.3% was inhibited by the extract of 20 mg/ml and 39.2% by α-tocopherol at the same concentration. These effects were statistically significant (r2=0.876,P<0.01) when compared with control. However, the extract had no significant effect on superoxide anion scavenging by the PMS/NADH-NBT method. Like antioxidant activity, the reducing power and free radical scavenging activity of extract depends on concentration and increasing with increased amount of sample. The reducing power and DPPH radical-scavenging activity of U. ghattensis extract were found greater than the BHA and BHT. The results obtained in the present study indicate that U. ghattensis is a potential source of natural antioxidant.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the reducing power, metal chelating, and radical scavenging capabilities of water and ethanol extracts of sumac (Rhus coriaria L.), comparatively. The water and ethanol extracts of sumac were evaluated for their radical scavenging activities by means of the DPPH and DMPD assays. Water extract of sumac (R. coriaria L.) scavenged radicals effectively with EC50 values of 36.4 ??g/ml for DPPH free radical and 44.7 ??g/ml for DMPD cation radical. Similarly, the total reducing power of water extract was found higher than ethanol extract in both potassium ferricyanide reduction (FRAP) and cupric ions reduction capacity methods (CUPRAC). 2,2′-Bipyridine was used to determine the metal chelating activity and the result of water extract was found higher than ethanol extract. Total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of both extracts were studied as well. The values of water extract were found to be higher than that of ethanol extract. The present study found that water extracts of sumac (R. coriaria L.) have effective antioxidant and radical scavenging activities as compared to ethanol extracts.  相似文献

In the present study, three plant foods, namely, drumstick leaves (Moringa oleifera), mint leaves (Mentha spicata) and carrot tuber (Daucus carota) were extracted with ethanol and analyzed for their antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated according to the amount of malonaldehyde (MDA) formed by the FeSO4-induced oxidation of linoleic acid and a high PUFA oil (sunflower oil) at 37 °C in Trizma-buffer (pH 7.4). At a concentration of 1.5 mg/ml of linoleic acid ,the extracts from drumstick and carrot had a higher antioxidant activity (83% and 80%) than α-tocopherol (72%). In sunflower oil, the extracts from drumstick leaves and mint leaves were found to exhibit a similar activity( 46% and 44%). The extract from drumstick exhibited the highest activity in both lipid systems. In addition, the stability of extracts to pH (4 and 9) and temperature (100 °C, 15 min) was investigated. The antioxidant activity of the extracts from mint leaves and carrot was higher at pH 9 than pH 4, while that of drumstick extract remained the same under both pH conditions. The extract from carrot was more heat-stable than other extracts. The three extracts stored in the dark at 5 and 25 °C after a 15 day period did not show any significant change (p ? 0.05) in their antioxidant activity. These data indicate that selected plant extracts are potential sources of dietary antioxidants.  相似文献

Water, methanol and ethanol extracts of freeze-dried leaves of wild ginseng were examined for their antioxidant properties. All leaf extracts were capable of free radicals scavenging activity. Among solvent extracts of wild ginseng leaves, ethanol extract showed the highest DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging and ferrous ion chelating activity. Otherwise, the highest superoxide radical scavenging activity was found in water extract followed by ethanol and methanol extracts of wild ginseng leaves. Ethanol extracts contained more phenolics (2333.2 mg/100 g) and flavonoids (1199.1 mg/100 g) than other extracts. These differences in concentrations of key antioxidants among various solvent extracts seemed to be responsible for their differences in antioxidant activities. When various solvent extracts were hydrolysed by acid, two aglycons of flavonoid, quercetin and kaempferol, were detected. According to the results obtained from this study, wild ginseng leaves showed marked antioxidant activities due to their abundant antioxidants.  相似文献

The free radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extracts of cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale, L.) skin powder (CSP) was evaluated by employing various in vitro antioxidant assay systems. The yield of the extract as well as the total phenolic content was also determined. The yield of ethanolic extract of the skin powder was quite high (0.45 g/g powder) with a total phenolic content of 243 mg/g extract. The cashew nut skin extract (CSE) demonstrated promising antioxidant activity with EC50 of 1.30 ± 0.02 μg/ml in 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assay, 10.69 ± 1.13 μg/ml in superoxide scavenging assay, 17.70 ± 0.05 μg/ml in deoxyribose oxidation assay, 24.66 ± 0.32 μg/ml in lipid peroxidation (LPO) assay and 6.00 mg/ml in iron chelation assay. To identify the compounds in the CSE responsible for the antioxidant activity, thin layer chromatography (TLC) was performed with the extract. The spot showing protection towards β-carotene bleaching was extracted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); epicatechin was found to be the major polyphenol present. The results of the present study suggest that cashew nut skin, a byproduct of cashew processing industry, can be used as an economical source of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

In this study, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of water and ethanol extracts of anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) seed (PAS) were investigated. The antioxidant properties of both extracts of PAS were evaluated using different antioxidant tests, including reducing power, free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and metal chelating activities. Twenty μg/ml of water and ethanol extracts exhibited 99.1 and 77.5% inhibition of peroxidation in linoleic acid system, which was greater than the same concentration of α-tocopherol (36.1%). These various antioxidant activities were compared with synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and α-tocopherol. The water extract of PAS exhibited greater antioxidant capacity than that of ethanol. Antimicrobial activity tests were carried out using disc diffusion methods with 10 microbial species.  相似文献

Agrocybe cylindracea (DC: Fr.) Mre. (Bolbitiaceae) was available in the form of fruit bodies, mycelia and fermentation filtrate. From these three forms, methanolic extracts were prepared and their antioxidant properties studied. The methanolic extract from fruit bodies showed high inhibitory ability on lipid oxidation (90.0-97.3%) at 5-20 mg/ml and had an EC50 value of 0.94 mg extract/ml. EC50 values in reducing power were 2.36, 6.89 and 5.00 mg extract/ml for fruit bodies, mycelia and filtrate, respectively. The scavenging ability of the methanolic extract from fruit bodies on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals was 89.0% at 1 mg/ml whereas those from mycelia and filtrate was 91.4% and 94.9% at 10 mg/ml, respectively. The chelating abilities of methanolic extracts from fruit bodies, mycelia and filtrate on ferrous ions were 90.6%, 84.6% and 96.3% at 5 mg/ml, respectively. Total phenols were the major detected naturally occurring antioxidant components found in methanolic extracts from A. cylindracea and in the range of 15.55-23.47 mg/g. Based on EC50 values, A. cylindracea was good in antioxidant properties, except for the scavenging ability on hydroxyl radicals.  相似文献

Pleurotus citrinopileatus Sing. (Lentinaceae) was successfully cultivated and commercially available in Taiwan. The ethanolic, cold and hot water extracts were prepared from P. citrinopileatus fruit bodies, mycelia and fermentation filtrate and their antioxidant properties studied. For three samples, ethanolic extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activities than water extracts. Reducing powers of three extracts from fruit bodies were effective and 1.03-1.10 at 5 mg/ml. With regard to EC50 values of scavenging abilities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals, the effectiveness was in a descending order: ethanolic>hot water>cold water extracts. Scavenging abilities of water extracts from three samples on hydroxyl radicals were 53.4-80.1% at 20 mg/ml. Chelating abilities of cold and hot water extracts on ferrous ions were higher than those of ethanolic extracts. Contents of total phenols were in the descending order: fruit bodies (8.62-12.38 mg/g)>mycelia (5.84-7.85 mg/g)>filtrate (4.80-5.57 mg/g). Overall, three extracts from fruit bodies were more effective in antioxidant properties assayed than those from mycelia and filtrate. Ethanolic extracts were more effective in antioxidant properties assayed, except for scavenging abilities on hydroxyl radicals.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts were prepared from green, yellow fallen and red fallen leaves of Terminalia catappa L. (Combretaceae) and their antioxidant activity, scavenging and chelating abilities were evaluated. Aqueous extracts from three different leaves showed high antioxidant activities and moderate scavenging abilities on hydroxyl radicals at 1 mg/ml. EC50 values in antioxidant activity were 0.549-0.557 mg/ml whereas those in scavenging ability on hydroxyl radicals were 0.631-0.686 mg/ml for aqueous extracts prepared from three leaves with boiling water for 3 min. EC50 values in reducing power were 0.15-0.23 mg/ml. EC50 values in scavenging abilities on superoxide anion and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydryl radicals were 0.36-0.44 and 10.4-35.3 mg/ml, respectively. EC50 values in chelating abilities on ferrous and cupric ions were 0.41-2.50 and 8.96-9.89 mg/ml, respectively. Based on the results obtained, the aqueous extracts displayed higher antioxidant properties. Six phenolic compounds identified in the aqueous were p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid, m-coumaric acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid and gallic acid. Therefore, the aqueous extracts from three different leaves of T. catappa might be a potential antioxidant supplement for application in food products or as a drink.  相似文献

Five extracts from five plants, of which four are endemic to Turkish flora, were screened for their possible in vitro antioxidant activities by two complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical-scavenging and β-carotene/linoleic acid. In the first case, Pelargonium endlicherianum extract exerted greater antioxidant activity than those of other plant extracts studied with an IC50 value of 7.43 ± 0.47 μg/ml, followed by Hieracium cappadocicum (30.0 ± 0.14 μg/ml). When compared to the synthetic antioxidant BHT (18.0 ± 0.40 μg/ml), the methanolic extract of P. endlicherianum exhibited more than two fold greater antioxidant activity. In the β-carotene/linoleic acid test system, the most active plant was P. endlicherianum with 72.6% ± 2.96 inhibition rate, followed by H. cappadocicum (55.1% ± 2.33) and Verbascum wiedemannianum (52.5% ± 3.11). Antioxidant activities of curcumin and ascorbic acid were also determined as positive controls in parallel experiments.  相似文献

Dorystoechas hastata (D. hastata) is a monotypic plant endemic to Antalya province of Turkey. D. hastata leaves are used to make a tea locally called “çalba tea”. Diethyl ether (E), ethanol (A), and water (W) were used for the sequential preparation of extracts from dried D. hastata leaves. A hot water extract (S) was also prepared by directly boiling the powdered plant in water. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were tested by ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging methods. E extract exhibited the greatest antioxidant activity with FTC method, whereas S extract exhibited the lowest IC50 value (6.17 ± 0.53 μg/ml) for DPPH radical scavenging activity. Total phenolic contents of the extracts were estimated by Folin–Ciocalteu method and S extract was found to contain the highest amount (554.17 ± 20.83 mg GAE/g extract) of phenolics. Extract A contained highest flavonoid content and there was a inverse linear correlation (R2 = 0.926) between IC50 values for DPPH radical scavenging activity and flavonoid contents of all extracts. Reducing power of extracts increased in a concentration-dependent manner. S extract was found to possess higher reducing power than equivalent amount of ascorbic acid at 20 and 25 μg/ml concentrations. Linear correlation between reducing power and concentration of E, A, and W extracts (R2 > 0.95) was observed. A, W, and S extracts contained relatively high levels of proline. The results presented suggest that D. hastata may provide a natural source of antioxidants and proline.  相似文献

The antioxidant and the tyrosinase inhibitory activities of 4 different solvents (acetone, ethanol, methanol, and water) for preparation of extracts from guava (branch, fruit, leaf, and seed) were evaluated by measuring total phenolic contents (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, reducing power (RP), and tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The extracts of branch and leaf showed relatively higher antioxidant properties than those of fruit and seed. The highest TPC (141.28 mg/g gallic acid equivalents), DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50=34.01 μg/mL), ABTS radical scavenging activity (IC50=3.23 μg/mL), and RP (IC50= 75.63 μg/mL) were found in acetone extract of leaf, while water extract of seed had the lowest antioxidant activity. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of ethanol extract from guava leaf was 69.56%, which was the highest activity among the extracts. These results indicate that useful bioactive substances exist in the guava branch as well as leaf extracts.  相似文献

A hot water extract from the fruit of Hyphaene thebaica was examined for its (i) hydrogen donating activity, (ii) Fe2+-chelating activity, (iii) hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity, (iv) inhibition of substrate site-specific hydroxyl radical formation, (v) superoxide radical-scavenging activity, and (vi) reducing power. The total phenolic content of the fruit extract was also determined in order to quantitate antioxidant activity as gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per ml reaction. The total phenolic content of the Doum fruit is low, but the extract exhibited potent antioxidant activity in terms of GAE. The activities expressed as mmol pure compound equivalent per g GAE content of extract are: (i) 2.85 mmol ascorbic acid equivalent, (ii) 1.78 mmol ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid equivalent, (iii) 192 mmol gallic acid equivalent, (iv) 3.36 mmol gallic acid equivalent, (v) 1.78 mmol gallic acid equivalent and (vi) 3.93 mmol ascorbic acid equivalent. These values were of the same magnitude as antioxidant activity in black tea except for Fe2+-chelating activity which was about 14 times more potent. The results show that the fruit of Hyphaene thebaica’s fruit is a source of potent antioxidants.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine polyphenols, anthocyanins and ascorbic acid in the extracts of black raspberry fruits and wine, along with their anti-oxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities. Black raspberry fruits without or with seeds crushed were blended in 60% ethanol (FE and FES, respectively) or in water (FW and FWS, respectively). Black raspberry wine without or with seeds crushed (W and WS, respectively) were prepared. Polyphenol content was the highest in the FES (8.25 mg/g fruit). Generally the ethanol extracts with seeds crushed showed higher anti-oxidant activities with the lowest DPPH IC50 (130 μg/ml (freeze-dried extract/reaction solution)) for the FES and the lowest ABTS IC50 (198 μg/ml) for the WS. Cell viabilities were reduced by 13–70% when treated with 100 μg/ml (freeze-dried extract/medium) for HT-29 cells and 1000 μg/ml for LNCaP cells. The FES most actively suppressed nitric oxide production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities treated with the extracts were higher than the control (p < 0.05).  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of water and ethanol extracts of clove (Eugenia carophyllata) buds and lavender (Lavandula stoechas L.) was studied. The antioxidant properties of both extracts of clove and lavender were evaluated using different antioxidant tests; reductive potential, free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging and metal chelating activities. The both extracts of clove and lavender exhibited strong total antioxidant activity. At the concentrations of 20, 40, and 60 μg/ml, water extract of clove and lavender showed 93.3%, 95.5%, 97.9%, 86.9%, 92.3%, and 94.8% inhibition on lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion, respectively. At the same concentrations, ethanol extract of clove and lavender exhibited 94.9%, 95.5%, 98.2%, 92.5%, 93.8%, and 96.5%, respectively. Comparable, 60 μg/ml of standard antioxidant such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and α-tocopherol exhibited 96.5%, 99.2%, and 61.1% inhibition on peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion, respectively. The both extracts of clove and lavender had effective reductive potential, free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, and metal chelating activities at all tested concentrations (20, 40, and 60 μg/ml). Those various antioxidant activities were compared to standard antioxidants such as BHA, BHT, and α-tocopherol. In addition, total phenolic compounds in the both extracts of clove and lavender were determined as gallic acid equivalent.  相似文献

The ethanol extracts from 24 samples plant species commonly found in Thailand were investigated and compared on their antioxidant activity by ABTS assay. The ethanol extract from the leaves of guava (Psidium guajava) showed the highest antioxidant capacity with the TEAC value of 4.908 ± 0.050 mM/mg, followed by the fruit peels of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) and mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) with the TEAC values of 3.074 ± 0.003 and 3.001 ± 0.016 mM/mg, respectively. The further investigation of guava leaf extracts from different solvents; n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and methanol, was examined using ABTS and FRAP assays. The total phenolic content was done by Folin–Ciocalteu reaction. The results indicated that the methanol fraction possessed the highest antioxidant activity, followed by the butanol and ethyl acetate fractions, respectively. The hexane fraction showed the lowest antioxidant activity. The results demonstrated that the mechanism of antioxidant action of guava leaf extracts was free radical scavenging and reducing of oxidized intermediates. The phenolic content in guava leaf fraction played a significant role on the antioxidant activity via reducing mechanisms.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor activities of water, methanol, and ethanol extracts of sweet apricot and bitter almond kernels. The fruit extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant activities using various antioxidant methodologies including phosphomolybdenum assay (total antioxidant capacity), free radical scavenging assay, ferric ion reducing power, and β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching test system. The antioxidant capacity of the sweet apricot kernels was better than those recorded for bitter almond ones. The highest total antioxidant activity (59.53 mg/g dry extract), ferric ion reducing power (1.626), antioxidant index (67%), total phenolic content (3.290 mg/g dry extract), and total lycopene content (4.70mg/mL) were detected in the aqueous extract of sweet apricot kernels. The antimicrobial activities of the above extracts were also tested against some pathogenic microorganisms using a disc-diffusion method. Additionally, the extracts of sweet apricot and bitter almond kernels could inhibit the growth of human breast (MCF-7), colon (HCT-116), and hepatocellular (Hep-G2) carcinoma cell lines in a dose-dependent manner with different sensitivity between cell lines. The overall results indicate promising baseline information for the potential uses of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) fruit extracts in the treatment of infectious diseases and tumors.  相似文献

Citrus sulcata was subjected to ultrasound, high-pressure, and Soxhlet extractions. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the extracts were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The antioxidant content of the peel extract was twice that of the fruit extract. The quantitative analysis showed that the narirutin and hesperidin contents in the peel extracts were 8.8 and 7.5 mg/100 g, respectively. These extracts had a total phenolic content of 112.22 ± 2.89 gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg/100 g, a total flavonoid content of 54.09 ± 1.01 rutin equivalent (RE) mg/100 g, DPPH radical scavenging activity of 46%, and antioxidant activity of 213.25 ± 2.82 μM of Trolox equivalents (TEAC). C. sulcata extracts could prevent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress, reduce expression of the inflammatory markers nuclear Factor kappa B (NFκB) and phosphorylated IκBα (p-IκBα) in A549 human lung carcinoma cells, and inhibit Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced THP-1 monocyte differentiation to an extent of 85%.  相似文献
