For more than a decade, the National Science Foundation's Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) has continued to extend and broaden its efforts in the revitalization of undergraduate education. This process began with innovative single projects, then expanded to disciplinary initiatives in engineering, calculus, and chemistry that sought to disseminate best practices across all institutions. The current emphasis of DUE programs is on continued systemic reform through faculty and teacher development as well as curricular reform and laboratory improvement. The effect of these activities is the presentation of material in an engaging manner, employing effective pedagogy and instructional technology to attract and retain students in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. They additionally prepare all graduates-majors as well as nonmajors-for entry into the workforce, rewarding careers, and a desire to continue learning throughout their lives. In considering the recommendations arising from the review of undergraduate education and the opinions of the community at large, DUE will continue to provide coordination and assistance in the comprehensive reform of higher education  相似文献

In the future, technology will have an increasingly critical impact on the way educational institutions present their services. In South Africa, the challenge in higher education is to redress past inequalities and to restructure the educational system to rise to the challenges of a modern country that can be competitive in the 21st Century. Technological developments must therefore be used as multipliers to solve the escalating pressures by increased access, equity, redress and quality in education. While technology can fulfil a significant role, we propose that, give current levels of infrastructure development, the introduction of technology will increase the gap between developed and underdeveloped communities and should therefore rather be utilized to free up available educational resources  相似文献

Educational programs face many difficulties because of the rapid change of technology in today's environment. The potential for educational programs based on the transdisciplinary model is discussed in order to address and overcome these difficulties. A closer relationship with industry in developing educational programs is suggested. Finally, a new transdisciplinary master of engineering program, developed jointly by industry and the Institute for Design and Advanced Technology at Texas Tech University, is described.  相似文献

This paper looks at changes in the education of engineers made necessary by unprecedented challenges within the semiconductor industry, from the perspective of a not-for-profit consortium of semiconductor manufacturers. To design and implement curricula to serve as a basis for the 40-year career of engineering graduates is a daunting challenge in this rapidly evolving environment. 多协议标签交换MPLS(Multi-Protocol Label Switching)是一新兴的网络技术,不断趋于成熟;而虚拟专用网VPN(Virtual Private Network)作为一个最大的服务领域,正面临网络业务量爆炸性增长所带 来的挑战。在这样的背景下,MPLS与VPN的有机结合具有很高的实用价值。MPLS技术的应用使用户得到了高速、高质量、高安全性的服务,而服务供应商提供这种服务过程也变得相对简单。同时,整个网络结构的弹性与可扩展性也得到了很大的改善。在扼要介绍VPN的一些基本概念及VPN网络结构2种基本模型的基础上,着重描述了MPLS-VPN原理(包括MPLS-VPN所采用的网络结构模型及其转发机制)和MPLS-VPN性能(包括MPLS技术为VPN所提供的安全性保证、QoS(Quality of Service)保障及流量工程功能),最后还指出了MPLS-VPN的优点及现存问题。  相似文献

Higher education institutions are among the many public and private sector entities that have committed to long-term sustainability goals in response to the threat of climate change. A key challenge for these institutions is establishing a commitment to make targeted investments in renewable energy technologies in support of emissions reduction goals. Such strategies require a vision to simultaneously coordinate strategic investments in renewable energy technologies with tactical operational decisions to achieve the desired benefits. In this paper, we formulate and solve a least-cost renewable energy capacity investment planning model to determine pathways to achieve emissions reduction strategies. Specifically, we apply our model to Rutgers University to evaluate its target of 100 % carbon neutrality. Using these insights, we share recommendations on how these strategies can be executed. This research serves as a springboard for administrators to assess and deploy their emissions reduction strategies, while ensuring system and financial constraints are satisfied.  相似文献

Fusion power has long been recognized as a clean source of energy. Unfortunately, after over 50 years of research, scientists don't expect a demonstration of full-scale fusion power generation in a prototype power plant until after 30 to 35 years. Extensive research, however, has made two significant advances in plasma physics, the discovery of bootstrap current and plasma's ability to organize itself in the edge at certain a pressure so that it is a much better insulator and retains heat much better. It is now commonplace to say that technology is more readily associated with boys and men than with girls and women. In popular representations, even where girls are ostensibly included, they tend to be presented as “other” to technology or their relationship to technology is trivialized. “Real technology” the message seems to be, is not for women and girls. The author reflects on research she has carried out over the last 10-15 years (to 1999) and, in particular, two projects which examined women's experiences in technological courses in UK tertiary education in the mid 1980s and the early 1990s. What struck her in her reflections was the extraordinary similarity in some central themes in both projects. In particular, the author reflects upon the prevalence of very limited, and therefore limiting, understandings of the gender-technology relationship within conventional technology curricula and the possibility for challenging the understandings that are offered by more progressive and innovative curricula in information technology based education  相似文献

Electro-luminescence is light emission from a solid through which an electric current is passed. Electro-luminescence from organic compounds was discovered in the early '60s, but the subject did not receive much attention until the discovery and development of conductive polymers. Compared to other electro-luminescent technologies (such as inorganic compound semiconductors, porous silicon and liquid crystals), polymer/organic light-emitting diodes (PLEDs/OLEDs) are very attractive. The reasons are their very low operating voltage, high brightness and their tunability to produce the three fundamental colors (red, blue and green). Furthermore, they are lightweight and can be grown on flexible substrates. They are fairly easy and inexpensive to fabricate. Today, PLEDs/OLEDs are suitable for applications such as automotive displays. In the future, they will probably conquer a large portion of the micro display market. Their higher efficiency and lower weight will make them quite competitive with LCD displays, the currently favorite technology. The article concludes that the future of organic light-emitting diodes seems very bright indeed.  相似文献

燃料经济、生态、性能、安全和舒适等特性将促使许多新型电系统产生.因此,对汽车用蓄电池的要求也将显著提高,例如有关可靠性、浅循环寿命、充电接受和在部分充电状态下高倍率放电(HRPSOC)运行的要求.人们期望铅酸蓄电池技术继续在这种应用中起主要作用.与传统的起动一照明一点火(SLI)蓄电池相比,在改善性能和使用寿命两方面已经取得或即将取得显著的技术进步,开发设计出许多新型蓄电池.车内储能装置的系统集成化将变得越来越重要.超级电容器可延长铅酸电池的寿命,保护负极板免于高倍率放电和充电.蓄电池监测、蓄电池管理等系统会为更主动的蓄电池运行策略创造条件,同时改善供电系统的可靠性.在一只铅酸蓄电池无法单独满足不断提高的要求的情况下,双储能系统有可能提供车辆所需的功率.  相似文献
