The present study has been undertaken with the purpose of investigating the critical success factors for the implementation of product lifecycle management (PLM) systems in manufacturing companies. Two exploratory case-based studies were conducted followed by a generalised study to establish the critical success factors for PLM systems’ implementation in manufacturing firms. Hybrid multi-criteria decision-making methods were employed to identify the causal factors and prioritise them for the implementation of PLM systems in an automotive and aerospace firm. The priority of the factors has also been confirmed by executives from broader PLM domain through a confirmatory t-test. The identified critical success factors can be utilised as directive guidelines by manufacturing organisations for the successful implementation of PLM systems. Most researchers have studied only the technological aspects of PLM, while very few have discussed the success factors to PLM implementation. The present study is highlighting PLM as a management concept, supporting PLM systems implementation in organisations, and discussing the critical success factors for effective PLM systems implementation.  相似文献

This paper presents novel collaboration methods implemented using a centralized client/server product development integration architecture, and a decentralized peer-to-peer network for smaller and larger companies using open source solutions. The product development integration architecture has been developed for the integration of disparate technologies and software systems for the benefit of collaborative work teams in design and manufacturing. This will facilitate the communication of early design and product development within a distributed and collaborative environment. The novelty of this work is the introduction of an ‘out-of-box’ concept which provides a standard framework and deploys this utilizing a proprietary state-of-the-art product lifecycle management system (PLM). The term ‘out-of-box’ means to modify the product development and business processes to suit the technologies rather than vice versa. The key business benefits of adopting such an approach are a rapidly reconfigurable network and minimal requirements for software customization to avoid systems instability.  相似文献

Nowadays, requirements management (RQM) is mostly not included in the current structures of product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, although RQM has become a critical activity throughout the PLM. Customer requirements with all related product information need not only be integrated with each other, but with all processes and stakeholders involved through the related business functions of product lifecycle. In this paper, we examine the various challenges of RQM, especially related to PLM. Company-specific challenges are identified, when integrating RQM with PLM in a case company acting in the automotive industry. The objective of this study is to find out how product-related information on customer requirements could better be utilised and integrated with PLM. We propose a new integration framework according to which the challenges at different integration levels are categorised. As a final conclusion, the study shows the core points where and how the concepts of PLM and RQM should be developed, as to create requirements integrated solutions for extended products and systems through the lifecycle.  相似文献

Sustainability is hinged on innovation. The importance of sustainable innovation management in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) cannot be underestimated. Studies on SSCM have emphasised the need for sustainable innovation in achieving sustainability but none provide deep insights into sustainable innovation management in SSCM implementation. This lack of research depth stimulates this study to identify and investigate criteria for sustainable supply chain management innovation advancement. This paper proposes a sustainable innovation criteria framework for investigating sustainable supply chains in manufacturing companies. To exemplify the applicability and efficiency of the proposed framework, a sample of five Indian manufacturing companies are used to evaluate and prioritise the sustainable innovation management criteria, using the ‘best–worst’ multi-criteria decision-making (BW-MCDM) model. The criteria weights for all companies from BWM are aggregated, averaged and used for ranking. The respondent managers viewed ‘financial availability for innovation’ as the most important sustainable innovation sub-criteria. The results of the study will inform industrial managers, practitioners and decision-makers on which criteria to focus on during the implementation stage, to increase sustainability in manufacturing supply chains, and further advance corporate and supply chain sustainable development. The framework may also serve as a theoretical construct for a future empirical study on sustainable supply chain innovation in the manufacturing sector. This paper sets the stage for further research in sustainable innovation practices in the manufacturing sector and its supply chains.  相似文献

An environmentally responsible or environmentally conscious manufacturing (ECM) program addresses the environmental impact of the interrelated decisions that are made at various stages of product life, from conception to design, raw ECM programs consumption, processing, delivery, use, recycling and/or disposal. The evaluation of alternative ECM programs for producing a given product is similar to many strategic initiatives and their justification methodologies. This similarity arises from the fact that there are multiple attributes that need to be considered, many of which have long term and broad implications for an organisation. Only a few decision making methods were proposed in the past for ECM program evaluation for producing a given product. There is a need for a systematic and logical scientific method or mathematical tool to guide organisations in taking a proper decision about ECM program evaluation. This paper presents a multiple attribute decision making methodology for evaluation of environmentally conscious manufacturing programs for producing a given product. The methodology is based on an improved compromise ranking method considering the ECM program selection attributes and their relative importance. The proposed ‘ECM program selection index’ helps to evaluate and rank the ECM programs for producing a given product. An example is included to illustrate the approach.  相似文献

The growing complexity in product design and manufacturing processes has made virtual prototyping an important new approach that enhances products and process development. Considering the ergonomic issues evident in product lifecycles, digital human modelling (DHM) is adopted for virtual simulation and proactive evaluation. A motion generation from semantics (MGS) system is proposed in this research. The MGS system features include virtual prototyping, natural language instruction, a method time measurement (MTM) translator and motion generator. The system was implemented using product lifecycle management (PLM) software and validated in an automotive manufacturing company. The practice of intuitively generating manual operations and conducting virtual simulations enables the system planners to quickly respond to manufacturing process changes and recursively improve the tooling and process design flexibility and efficiency.  相似文献

This study proposes an innovative flow management system that includes product (product and logistics) and process (human, information and decision) flow management. We identify three levels of ISO 9000 implementation (basic, advanced and supportive) as enablers, and operational performance as the outcome. The model was tested using the data-set collected from 133 ISO 9001 certified manufacturing companies in Australia. The results show that advanced implementation is positively related to both product and process flow management; supportive implementation is only positively related to process flow management while basic implementation has no significant effect on either product or process flow management. The results also show that both product and process flow management are positively related to operational performance. This study provides managerial guidelines for companies that wish to improve their innovation capabilities through ISO 9000 implementation and flow management. It also contributes to the ISO 9000 and flow management literature.  相似文献

This paper presents a modern approach to integrated development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle made of laminated composite materials from conceptual design, through detail design, strength and stiffness analyses, definition and management of design and production data, detailed tests results and other activities related to development of laminated composite structures with main of its particularities in comparison to metal structures. Special attention in this work is focused to management processes of product data during life cycle of an UAV and experimental tests of its composite wing. Experience shows that the automation management processes of product data during life cycle, as well as processes of manufacturing, are inevitable if a company wants to get cheaper and quality composite aircraft structures. One of the most effective ways of successful management of product data today is Product Life cycle Management (PLM). In terms of the PLM, a spectrum of special measures and provisions has to be implemented when defining fiber-reinforced composite material structures in comparison to designing with metals which is elaborated in the paper.  相似文献

This paper presents a WWW (World Wide Web) based integrated product development platform for intelligent concurrent design and manufacturing of sheet metal parts. In order to achieve this platform, several major modules are discussed. These modules mainly include the structure of the WWW-based integrated product development platform, an information integration framework, a RTCAPP (real time computer aided process planning) module, a customer interface module, and a design/manufacturing knowledge-based module for supporting product design and manufacturing. This paper gives the structure of the information integration framework for concurrent design and manufacturing of sheet metal parts. An information integration framework, called 'step structure information framework' is proposed. The principles, called 'zero thickness and zero bend radius' are put forward, which can be used to abstract the geometric entities of sheet metal parts in order to facilitate product design and modelling. Engineering Changes (ECs) are a fact of life for companies in the Engineer-To-Order (ETO) production environment. Various Engineering Change Management (ECM) strategies, practices and tools exist, but no explicit distinction has been made regarding ECM in different production environments. Using a multiple case study method, this article investigates how ETO companies manage ECs and how ETO characteristics influence ECM. A generic ECM framework was developed and used to map ECM in the cases. The study showed that ETO companies use similar practices for handling ECs, while ECM tools are either not used by the companies or used to a very limited extent. It was found that the use of some ECM practices and tools is complicated by specific ETO company characteristics. However, no reasons were found for the lack of computer-based tools, change propagation and impact assessment tools, change reduction and front-loading tools, and design tools. This suggests, firstly, that there is vast room for improvement in ETO companies when it comes to ECM; and secondly, that the applicability of such tools should be further tested in the ETO environment. Based on the findings, some suggestions as to how ECM can be improved in ETO companies are given to practitioners.  相似文献

This paper aims to provide a review and synthesis of the performance-based contracting (PBC) literature across academic disciplines. It also seeks to examine how the operations and supply management (OSM) discipline in particular relates to PBC studies in other study fields. The research is based on a systematic literature review of 241 peer-reviewed articles across disciplines, published between 1985 and 2014. A classification framework of PBC research is proposed, addressing key aspects of PBC design and management: performance specification and evaluation, the design of incentives and their impact on supplier behaviour and risks allocation depending also on the risk attitudes of buyers and suppliers. The comparative analysis of literature by discipline helps identify current empirical and theoretical limitations of relevant OSM studies. The paper concludes that future OSM research should expand its theoretical framework and empirical focus to better understand PBC design and management. Eight specific suggestions for future OSM research are offered, e.g. examining the potential of PBC as means for managing sustainability and innovation goals of supply chains. The paper helps advance OSM research in this area by providing a structured overview of definitions, theories, conceptual frames, methods and empirical studies from other disciplines.  相似文献

Recent digital advancements, including social software, mobile technologies and augmented reality, offer promising opportunities to empower knowledge workers in their production environment by leveraging their knowledge processes, decision-making skills and social interaction practices. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for empowering workers in industrial production environments with digitally facilitated knowledge management processes. The framework explores four concrete facets of digital advancements that apply to a wide range of knowledge processes and production strategies in manufacturing companies. Each of these advancements are capable of supporting one specific facet of the individual knowledge management processes of workers; knowledge transfer, discovery, acquisition and sharing. The study contributes to the production research community by aligning emerging digital technologies and current trends in advanced manufacturing environments to benefit workers and improve job satisfaction, efficiency and productivity. The paper also contains suggestions about developing innovative solutions for production environments that support workers with digital technologies for flexible production.  相似文献

Mobile supply chain management (SCM) is gaining recognition as a major source of cost reduction and supply chain performance improvement. The current literature related to mobile SCM needs to be extended further in order to provide insights into how manufacturing firms can implement mobile SCM successfully. Specifically, there is a need to provide empirical and systematic analysis of the variables that can explain the various stages of mobile SCM diffusion. A review of recent literature suggests that existing e-supply chain technology adoption literature is not strongly grounded in theory. A theoretical model with six hypotheses was proposed based on the technology–organisation–environment (TOE) framework and innovation diffusion theory (IDT). This study draws its survey responses from a group of manufacturing firms in order to investigate the factors that affect the diffusion of mobile SCM. The results show that the variables derived from TOE and IDT can explain mobile SCM diffusion well. However, interorganisational relationships (IORs) play a crucial role in determining the success of mobile SCM routinisation. This is one of the first known empirical studies on the factors influencing the diffusion of mobile SCM. The results of this study will help decision makers better understand the implementation process of mobile SCM and formulate strategies for successful diffusion of mobile SCM.  相似文献

This paper presents a global supply chain quality management (SCQM) framework as an extension of the traditional supply chain operations and quality management. Three distinct groups of variables are adopted in this study to illustrate the conceptual framework: a hierarchy of design variables, a hierarchy of system variables, and a hierarchy of problem solving methods. The aim of this theoretical framework is to offer practical guidelines to global business leaders and their value chain partners. This study also involves interviews with senior executives from a multinational enterprise in Taiwan. Four major SCQM themes are identified – design for six sigma (DFSS); international standards; supply chain management (SCM); global leadership and human resource management. In this study, we also view the cycle of decision making as an integral part of any global SCQM strategy. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to develop priority indices for the following three hierarchical levels: environmental scanning, strategic choice, and tactical choice. The presented framework adopts a systems approach and ensures that quality conscious products are designed, manufactured, and distributed.  相似文献

The business environment today is a collaborative business environment. These include inter- and intra-enterprise business process collaboration in the areas of supply chain management, customer relationship management, supplier relationship management, e-business and employee–business integration. To achieve this, enterprises also realize the need to implement integrated-enterprise systems, which integrate tightly their intra- and inter-enterprise business processes. With new technologies like web services, wireless applications and advanced software applications that enable collaboration, the enterprise today needs implementation frameworks that consider the requirements of collaborative business scenarios in a holistic manner. Consideration of the various critical success factors in the life cycle of the integrated-enterprise systems implementation reduces the risk of failures. A critical success factor framework is introduced for an integrated-enterprise systems implementation framework in the collaborative manufacturing environment. This framework ensures that the various critical success factors are considered at a very early stage of the project so that the integrated-enterprise system can be designed and implemented. Risks and potential problem areas are identified and mitigation plans can be put in place. A case study of an integrated-enterprise system implementation using the critical success factor framework is also presented. This framework was used successfully to design and implement a collaborative integrated-enterprise system for a manufacturing enterprise.  相似文献

This research employed a qualitative approach to discuss the current practice and challenges of Malaysian manufacturing firms in the implementation of Industry 4.0. The study examined data from seven manufacturing companies pursuing Industry 4.0 initiatives to identify various options for their strategies. The study found that the implementation of Industry 4.0 in the manufacturing firms is still in the exploratory stage. The companies involved in this study were discovered to conduct exploration using an adaptive-like framework. That is, throughout the process, the majority of the subjects are 'trying and adding' Industry 4.0 to their operations. Their trial-and-error approach is based on what is feasible and effective in their manufacturing environment. Overall, the investigation determined that data management and integration, as well as personnel re-education, were the respondents' primary operational challenges.  相似文献
