This paper provides fundamental principles to study the thermodynamic performance of a new screw expander–based solar thermal electricity plant. While steam turbines are generally used in direct steam generation solar systems without admitting fluid in two-phase conditions, steam screw expanders, as volumetric machines, can convert thermal to mechanical energy also by expanding liquid-steam mixtures without a decline in efficiency. In effect, steam turbines are not as competitive as screw expanders when the net power is smaller than 2 MW and for low-grade heat sources. The solar electricity generation system proposed in this paper is based on the steam Rankine cycle: Water is used as both working fluid and storage, parabolic trough collectors are used as a thermal source, and screw expanders are used as power machines. Since screw expanders can operate at off-design working conditions in several situations when installed in direct steam generation solar plants, studying expander performance under fluctuating working situations is a crucial issue. The main aim of the present paper is to establish a thermodynamic model to study the energetic benefits of the proposed power system when off-design operating conditions and variable solar radiation occur. This entails, first and foremost, developing overexpansion and underexpansion numerical models to describe the polytropic expansion phase, which considers all the losses affecting performance of the screw expander under real operating conditions. To assess the best operating conditions and maximum efficiency of the whole power system at part-load working conditions under fluctuating solar radiations, parametric optimization is then improved in a wide range of variable working conditions, assuming condensation pressures of water increasing from 0.1 to 1 bar, under an evaporation temperature rising from 170°C to 300°C.  相似文献

A low-temperature solar Rankine system utilizing R245fa as the working fluid is proposed and an experimental system is designed, constructed and tested. Both the evacuated solar collectors and the flat plate solar collectors are used in the experimental system, meanwhile, a rolling-piston R245fa expander is also mounted in the system. The new designed R245fa expander works stably in the experiment, with an average expansion power output of 1.73 kW and an average isentropic efficiency of 45.2%. The overall power generation efficiency estimated is 4.2%, when the evacuated solar collector is utilized in the system, and with the condition of flat plate solar collector, it is about 3.2%. The experimental results show that using R245fa as working fluid in the low-temperature solar power Rankine cycle system is feasible and the performance is acceptable.  相似文献

Modelling of parabolic trough direct steam generation solar collectors   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Solar electric generation systems (SEGS) currently in operation are based on parabolic trough solar collectors using synthetic oil heat transfer fluid in the collector loop to transfer thermal energy to a Rankine cycle turbine via a heat exchanger. To improve performance and reduce costs direct steam generation in the collector has been proposed. In this paper the efficiency of parabolic trough collectors is determined for operation with synthetic oil (current SEGS plants) and water (future proposal) as the working fluids. The thermal performance of a trough collector using Syltherm 800 oil as the working fluid has been measured at Sandia National Laboratory and is used in this study to develop a model of the thermal losses from the collector. The model is based on absorber wall temperature rather than fluid bulk temperature so it can be used to predict the performance of the collector with any working fluid. The effects of absorber emissivity and internal working fluid convection effects are evaluated. An efficiency equation for trough collectors is developed and used in a simulation model to evaluate the performance of direct steam generation collectors for different radiation conditions and different absorber tube sizes. Phase change in the direct steam generation collector is accounted for by separate analysis of the liquid, boiling and dry steam zones.  相似文献

A solar-powered/fuel-assisted steam Rankine engine (SPFASRE) that generates a 36 kW steady electrical power is designed. Steam is generated at 230°C using an unfired boiler. The boiler is connected to oil loops that utilize 400 m2 of single axis tracking concentrating parabolic-trough collectors and an auxiliary gas-fired heater. The steam leaving the boiler is superheated to 400°C in an LPG-fired superheater. The Rankine engine features a two-stage turbine. The calculated steam Rankine cycle's efficiency at design condition is 23·2%.

A computer program was developed to simulate the system's performance under design and off-design conditions. The results of the simulation indicate that the size of the solar collector chosen provides from 80% to 85% of the total energy required for the Rankine cycle during the summer, fall and spring seasons. In the winter season, however, about 70% of the total energy is supplied by solar energy.

This paper describes the design of SPFASRE and its seasonally projected performance for Jeddah's climate in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Recent interest in small-scale solar thermal combined heat and power (CHP) power systems has coincided with demand growth for distributed electricity supplies in areas poorly served by centralized power stations. One potential technical approach to meeting this demand is the parabolic trough solar thermal collector coupled with an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) heat engine. The paper describes the design of a solar organic Rankine cycle being installed in Lesotho for rural electrification purpose. The system consists of parabolic though collectors, a storages tank, and a small-scale ORC engine using scroll expanders.A model of each component is developed taking into account the main physical and mechanical phenomena occurring in the cycle and based on experimental data for the main key components. The model allows sizing the different components of the cycle and evaluates the performance of the system. Different working fluids are compared, and two different expansion machine configurations are simulated (single and double stage).  相似文献

In this study, a new solar power assisted multigeneration system designed and thermodynamically analyzed. In this system, it is designed to perform heating, cooling, drying, hydrogen and power generation with a single energy input. The proposed study consists of seven sub-parts which are namely parabolic dish solar collector, Rankine cycle, organic Rankine cycle, PEM-electrolyzer, double effect absorption cooling, dryer and heat pump. The effects of varying reference temperature, solar irradiation, input and output pressure of high-pressure turbine and pinch point temperature heat recovery steam generator are investigated on the energetic and exergetic performance of integration system. Thermodynamic analysis result outputs show that the energy and exergy performance of overall study are computed as 48.19% and 43.57%, respectively. Moreover, the highest rate of irreversibility has the parabolic dish collector with 24,750 kW, while the lowest rate of irreversibility is calculated as 5745 kW in dryer. In addition, the main contribution of this study is that the solar-assisted multi-generation systems have good potential in terms of energy and exergy efficiency.  相似文献

In this paper, a solar power-based combined plant for power, hydrogen, methane, ammonia and urea production is proposed. A parabolic trough collector is utilized for the system prime mover. Moreover, steam Rankine cycle, organic Rankine cycle, hydrogen production and compression subsystem, ammonia, methane and urea production units, single-effect absorption cooling unit, and freshwater production plant are integrated together to develop the present system for better system performance and cost-effectiveness and reduced environmental impact. In order to analyze and evaluate the proposed multigeneration plant, thermodynamic, parametric and economic studies are performed. According to the assessment results, it is found that energetic and exergetic efficiencies of the present multigeneration plant are 66.12% and 61.56%, respectively. The comparisons of the subsystem and overall plant efficiencies show that the highest energetic and energetic efficiencies belong to freshwater production plant by 79.24% and 75.62%, respectively. In addition, the present parametric analysis indicates that an increase in the reference temperature, solar radiation intensity and working pressure of the solar process has a positive effect on the plant's performance. The cost analysis reveals that as the solar radiation intensity and the working pressure of the solar process increase, the hydrogen generation cost decreases. Furthermore, the hydrogen generation cost is achieved to be 1.94 $/kgH2 at 650 W/m2 of the solar radiation intensity, with other parameters remaining constant.  相似文献

This paper deals with the design recommendations for solar reverse osmosis (RO) desalination based on solar organic Rankine cycles (SORC). This technology can be the most energy-efficient technology for seawater and brackish water desalination within the small to medium power output range (up to 500 kW) of the power cycle if the system is properly designed. However, theoretical studies, design proposals and experimental works are very scarce and only very few solar reverse osmosis systems driven by ORC has been either implemented or analysed in the past. In this paper, those systems are outlined and general design recommendations from previous detailed analysis already publish are given for future RO desalination system to be designed based on SORC. Useful information is given about the selection of the working fluid and boundary conditions of the ORC, operation temperature and configuration of the solar field, suited solar collector and thermal energy storage technology, etc. Recommendations are exemplified with well selected numerical cases based on recommended working fluids and solar cycle configuration with proper values of design point parameters. Recommendations given in this paper could be helpful in future initiatives regarding the research and development of this promising solar desalination technology.  相似文献

An optimal performance analysis for an equivalent Carnot-like cycle heat engine of a parabolic-trough direct-steam-generation solar driven Rankine cycle power plant at maximum power and maximum power density conditions is performed. Simultaneous radiation-convection and only radiation heat transfer mechanisms from solar concentrating collector, which is the high temperature thermal reservoir, are considered separately. Heat rejection to the low temperature thermal reservoir is assumed to be convection dominated. Irreversibilities are taken into account through the finite-rate heat transfer between the fixed temperature thermal reservoirs and the internally reversible heat engine. Comparisons proved that the performance of a solar driven Carnot-like heat engine at maximum power density conditions, which receives thermal energy by either radiation-convection or only radiation heat transfer mechanism and rejects its unavailable portion to surroundings by convective heat transfer through heat exchangers, has the characteristics of (1) a solar driven Carnot heat engine at maximum power conditions, having radiation heat transfer at high and convective heat transfer at low temperature heat exchangers respectively, as the allocation parameter takes small values, and of (2) a Carnot heat engine at maximum power density conditions, having convective heat transfer at both heat exchangers, as the allocation parameter takes large values. Comprehensive discussions on the effect of heat transfer mechanisms are provided.  相似文献

This paper investigates the performance of a high temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer integrated with concentrating solar power (CSP) plant and thermal energy storage (TES) to produce hydrogen and electricity, concurrently. A finite-time-thermodynamic analysis is conducted to evaluate the performance of a PEM system integrated with a Rankine cycle based on the concept of exergy. The effects of solar intensity, electrolyzer current density and working temperature on the performance of the overall system are identified. A TES subsystem is utilized to facilitate continuous generation of hydrogen and electricity. The hydrogen and electricity generation efficiency and the exergy efficiency of the integrated system are 20.1% and 41.25%, respectively. When TES system supplies the required energy, the overall energy and exergy efficiencies decrease to 23.1% and 45%, respectively. The integration of PEM electrolyzer enhances the exergy efficiency of the Rankine cycle, considerably. However, it causes almost 5% exergy destruction in the integrated system due to conversion of electrical energy to hydrogen energy. Also, it is concluded that increase of working pressure and membrane thickness leads to higher cell voltage and lower electrolyzer efficiency. The results indicate that the integrated system is a promising technology to enhance the performance of concentrating solar power plants.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new type of solar energy based power generation system using supercritical carbon dioxide and heat storage. The power generation cycle uses supercritical carbon dioxide as the working fluid and integrates the supercritical carbon dioxide cycle with an efficient high-temperature heat storage. The analysis shows that the new power generation system has significantly higher solar energy conversion efficiency in comparison to the conventional water-based (steam) system. At the same time, the heat storage not only overcomes the intermittent nature of solar energy but also improves the overall system efficiency. The study further reveals that the high temperatures and high pressures are favorable for solar energy storage and power generation. Moreover the expander and the heat storage/regenerator are found to be the key components that determine the overall system performance.  相似文献

In this paper, a new renewable energy-based cogeneration system for hydrogen and electricity production is developed. Three different methods for hydrogen production are integrated with Rankine cycle for electricity production using solar energy as an energy source. In addition, a simple Rankine cycle is utilized for producing electricity. This integrated system consists of solar steam reforming cycle using molten salt as a heat carrier, solar steam reforming cycle using a volumetric receiver reactor, and electrolysis of water combined with the Rankine cycle. These cycles are simulated numerically using the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) based on the thermodynamic analyses. The overall energetic and exergetic efficiencies of the proposed system are determined, and the exergy destruction and entropy generation rates of all subcomponents are evaluated. A comprehensive parametric study for evaluating various critical parameters on the overall performance of the system is performed. The study results show that both energetic and exergetic efficiencies of the system reach 28.9% and 31.1%, respectively. The highest exergy destruction rates are found for the steam reforming furnace and the volumetric receiver reforming reactor (each with about 20%). Furthermore, the highest entropy generation rates are obtained for the steam reforming furnace and the volumetric receiver reforming reactor, with values of 174.1 kW/K and 169.3 kW/K, respectively. Additional parametric studies are undertaken to investigate how operating conditions affect the overall system performance. The results report that 60.25% and 56.14% appear to be the highest exergy and energy efficiencies at the best operating conditions.  相似文献

The paper presents the on site experimental evaluation of the performance of a low-temperature solar organic Rankine cycle system (SORC) for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. This work is a research step forward to the experimental evaluation of the SORC under laboratory conditions, where the system was tested using an electric brake as load and an electric thermal heater as heat supply. The difference is that solar collectors have been applied as heat supply and there has been a realistic investigation of the performance of the system under the conditions implied by solar energy. The thermal energy produced by the solar collectors’ array evaporates the refrigerant HFC-134a in the pre-heater-evaporator surfaces of the Rankine engine. The superheated vapour is then driven to the expander, where the generated mechanical work produced from expansion drives the high-pressure pump of the RO desalination unit. The superheated vapour at the expander’s outlet is directed to the condenser and condensates. Finally, the saturated liquid at the condenser outlet is pressurized by a positive displacement pump and the thermodynamic cycle is repeated. A special energy recovery system of Axial Pistons Pumps (APP) has been integrated into the RO unit to minimise the specific energy consumption. The results prove that the above concept is technically feasible and continuous operation is achieved under the intermittent availability of solar energy. However, considerably low efficiency has been observed, in comparison with the results taken under controlled thermal load. Nevertheless, it becomes apparent that further optimisation work is required to improve the system efficiency. The research work has been done within the framework of COOP-CT-2003-507997 contract, partly financed by EC.  相似文献

In this article, a thermodynamic investigation of solar power tower assisted multigeneration system with hydrogen production and liquefaction is presented for more environmentally-benign multigenerational outputs. The proposed multigeneration system is consisted of mainly eight sub-systems, such as a solar power tower, a high temperature solid oxide steam electrolyzer, a steam Rankine cycle with two turbines, a hydrogen generation and liquefaction cycle, a quadruple effect absorption cooling process, a drying process, a membrane distillation unit and a domestic hot water tank to supply hydrogen, electrical power, heating, cooling, dry products, fresh and hot water generation for a community. The energetic and exergetic efficiencies for the performance of the present multigeneration system are found as 65.17% and 62.35%, respectively. Also, numerous operating conditions and parameters of the systems and their effects on the respective energy and exergy efficiencies are investigated, evaluated and discussed in this study. A parametric study is carried out to analyze the impact of various system design indicators on the sub-systems, exergy destruction rates and exergetic efficiencies and COPs. In addition, the impacts of varying the ambient temperature and solar radiation intensity on the irreversibility and exergetic performance for the present multigeneration system and its components are investigated and evaluated comparatively. According to the modeling results, the solar irradiation intensity is found to be the most influential parameter among other conditions and factors on system performance.  相似文献

In this paper, exergy analysis method is developed to assess a Rankine cycle system,by using supercritical CO2 as working fluid and powered by solar energy. The proposed system consists of evacuated solar collectors, throttling valve,high-temperature heat exchanger,low-temperature heat exchanger, and feed pump. The system is designed for utilize evacuated solar collectors to convert solar energy into mechanical energy and hence electricity. In order to investigate and estimate exergy performance of this system, the energy, entropy, exergy balances are developed for the components. The exergy destructions and exergy efficiency values of the system components are also determined. The results indicate that solar collector and high temperature heat exchanger which have low exergy efficiencies contribute the largest share to system irreversibility and should be the optimization design focus to improve system exergy effectiveness.Further, exergy analysis is a useful tool in this regard as it permits the performance of each process to be assessed and losses to be quantified.Exergy analysis results can be used in design, optimization, and improvement efforts.  相似文献

The selection of working fluid and working conditions of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) has a great effect on the system operation, and its energy efficiency and impact on the environment. The main purpose of this study is to develop a procedure to compare capabilities of working fluids when they are employed in solar Rankine cycles with similar working conditions. The Refprop 8.0 database with 117 organic fluids has been considered as the reference in this study. A procedure to compare ORC working fluids based on their molecular components, temperature–entropy diagram and fluid effects on the thermal efficiency, net power generated, vapor expansion ratio, and exergy efficiency of the Rankine cycle has been proposed. Fluids with the best cycle performance have been recognized in two different temperature levels within two different categories of fluids: refrigerants and non-refrigerants. Based on categories of solar collectors, 11 fluids have been suggested to be employed in solar ORCs that use low or medium temperature solar collectors. Collector efficiency improvement and use of the regenerative ORC instead of the basic cycle reduce irreversibility of a solar ORC. Calculation results show that for selected fluids, the theoretical limits for irreversibility reduction and exergy efficiency enhancement through collector efficiency improvement are 35% and 5% respectively, when the collector efficiency increases from 70% to 100%. The effect of regeneration on the exergy efficiency of the cycle is fluid dependent while the effect of collector efficiency improvement on the exergy efficiency of the cycle is nearly independent of fluid type. At the two temperature levels studied, higher molecular complexity results in more effective regenerative cycles except for Cyclohydrocarbons.  相似文献

In concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems the incident solar radiation is multiplied by a factor equal to the concentration ratio, with the use of lenses or reflectors. This is implemented, in order to increase the electric power production, since this value has a linear dependence from the incident radiation. Therefore, the specific energy production of the cells (kWh/m2) radically increases, but due to this high intensity CPVs consequently operate at elevated temperatures, because heat dissipation to the environment is not so intense and heat produced cannot naturally convected. This temperature increase not only leads to a reduction of their electric efficiency, but also it must be dissipated, since issues regarding their degradation and reduction of their lifetime might arise. There are many reported ways of removing this heat, either by adding a cooling unit on the back side of the CPV module, or by recovering with possible uses in buildings, industry, additional power production or even desalination of seawater. The current work is actually a feasibility study, concerning a concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) system, where the heat produced is recovered by an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) for additional power production. A pump drives the organic fluid of the cycle, which is evaporated in the tubes of the CPV/T and driven to an expander for mechanical power production. For the condensation of the organic fluid several possible alternatives can be applied. That way, the PV cells can be cooled effectively and increase their electrical efficiency, while the recovered heat is designated to produce additional electric energy through the organic Rankine process, when the expander of the Rankine engine is coupled to a generator. The scope of the present work is to investigate an alternative application of concentrating PV modules through exploiting the generated heat by the ORC process and combining both technologies into an integrated system. The design of the system is presented in details, along with an optimization of some main parameters. The performance of the system will also be examined and compared with an equivalent conventional CPV system, referring to their design points. Finally, the annual and daily performance will be studied, which is a more realistic indicator, concerning the increased efficiency this integrated system is expected to have, followed by a cost analysis, in order to examine its economic feasibility as well.  相似文献

INDITEP: The first pre-commercial DSG solar power plant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper presents the conceptual design of the first solar power plant using Direct Steam Generation (DSG) in a parabolic-trough solar field. Experience and know-how in the DSG process acquired during the DISS project were applied in designing the solar field of this plant. The 5-MWe plant is composed of a DSG parabolic-trough solar field connected to a superheated steam Rankine power cycle. The solar field produces 410 °C/70-bar superheated steam. Detail engineering of this plant is currently underway within the framework of the INDITEP project, which is promoted by a German-Spanish consortium with the financial support of the European Commission (Contract No. ENK5-CT-2001-00540). The main design objective is to assure high operational flexibility and reliability. This is the reason why a robust superheated steam turbine has been selected, though the efficiency of its power block is modest.  相似文献
