We derive the capacity of time-varying channels with memory that have causal channel side information (CSI) at the sender and receiver. We obtain capacity of block-memoryless and asymptotically block-memoryless channels with block-memoryless or weakly decorrelating side information. Our coding theorems rely on causal generation of the codewords relative to the causal transmitter CSI. The CSI need not be perfect, and we consider the case where the transmitter and receiver have the same causal CSI as well as the case where the transmitter CSI is a deterministic function of the receiver CSI. For block-memoryless and asymptotically block-memoryless channels, our coding strategy averages mutual information density over multiple transmission blocks to achieve the maximum average mutual information. We apply the coding theorem associated with the block-memoryless channel to determine the capacity and optimal input distribution of intersymbol interference (ISI) time-varying channels with causal perfect CSI about the time-varying channel. The capacity of this channel cannot be found through traditional decomposition methods  相似文献

Previously, we proposed a differential space-code modulation (DSCM) scheme that integrates the strength of differential space-time coding and spreading to achieve interference suppression and resistance to time-varying channel fading in single-user environments. In this paper, we consider the problem of multiuser receiver design for code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems that utilize DSCM for transmission. In particular, we propose two differential receivers for such systems. These differential receivers do not require the channel state information (CSI) for detection and, still, are resistant to multiuser interference (MUI) and time-varying channel fading. We also propose a coherent receiver that requires only the CSI of the desired user for detection. The coherent receiver yields improved performance over the differential receivers when reliable channel estimates are available (e.g., in slowly fading channels). The proposed differential/coherent receivers are decorrelative schemes that decouple the detection of different users. Both long and short spreading codes can be employed in these schemes. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receivers.  相似文献

We determine the capacity regions for a class of time-varying multiple-access channels (TVMACs), when the underlying channel state evolves in time according to a probability law which is known to the transmitters and the receiver. Additionally, the transmitters and the receiver have access to varying degrees of channel state information (CSI) concerning the condition of the channel. Discrete-time channels with finite input, output, and state alphabets are considered first. The special case of a TVMAC, with the channel state process being a time-invariant, indecomposable, aperiodic Markov chain, shows a surprising anomaly in that imperfect transmitter CSI can cause the capacity under some distributions for the initial state to be strictly larger than that under a stationary distribution for the initial state. We also study a time-varying multiple-access fading channel with additive Gaussian noise, when various amounts of CSI are provided to the transmitters and perfect CSI is available to the receiver, and the fades are assumed to be stationary and ergodic. Implications for transmitter power control are discussed

This paper proposes a Joint Source Channel Coding solution optimized for a wireless JPEG 2000 (JPWL ISO/IEC 15444-11) image transmission scheme over a MIMO channel. To ensure robustness of the transmission, channel diversity is exploited with a Closed-Loop MIMO-OFDM scheme. This relies on the Channel State Information (CSI) knowledge on the transmitter side, which allows the MIMO channel to be decomposed into several hierarchical SISO subchannels. In the proposed scheme, the JPWL codestream is divided into hierarchical quality layer passing through the SISO subchannels. With the CSI, a global and optimal method for adjusting all the system parameters of each SISO subchannel is provided. Accordingly, adaptive modulation, Unequal Error Protection (UEP), Unequal Power Allocation (UPA) and source coding rate is provided for each quality layers. The major strength of this work is to provide an optimal method that parameterizes several variables. These have an effect on the rate-distortion trade-off under bitrate, Quality of Service (QoS) and power constraints. Finally, the proposed work allows flexible and reactive coding of a JPWL codestream adapted to the instantaneous channel status. The performance of this technique is evaluated over a realistic time-varying MIMO channel provided by a 3D-ray tracing propagation model. A significant improvement in the quality of the image is demonstrated.  相似文献

This paper considers a progressive image transmission system over wireless channels by combining joint source-channel coding (JSCC), space-time coding, and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The BER performance of the space-time coded OFDM-based MIMO system based on a newly built broadband MIMO fading model is first evaluated by assuming perfect channel state information at the receiver for coherent detection. Then, for a given average SNR (hence, BER), a fast local search algorithm is applied to optimize the unequal error protection design in JSCC, subjected to fixed total transmitted energy for various constellation sizes. This design allows the measurement of the expected reconstructed image quality. With this end-to-end system performance evaluation, an adaptive modulation scheme is proposed to pick the constellation size that offers the best reconstructed image quality for each average SNR. Simulation results of practical image transmissions confirm the effectiveness of our proposed adaptive modulation scheme.  相似文献

On the Secrecy Capacity of Fading Channels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We consider the secure transmission of information over an ergodic fading channel in the presence of an eavesdropper. Our eavesdropper can be viewed as the wireless counterpart of Wyner's wiretapper. The secrecy capacity of such a system is characterized under the assumption of asymptotically long coherence intervals. We first consider the full channel state information (CSI) case, where the transmitter has access to the channel gains of the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. The secrecy capacity under this full CSI assumption serves as an upper bound for the secrecy capacity when only the CSI of the legitimate receiver is known at the transmitter, which is characterized next. In each scenario, the perfect secrecy capacity is obtained along with the optimal power and rate allocation strategies. We then propose a low-complexity on/off power allocation strategy that achieves near-optimal performance with only the main channel CSI. More specifically, this scheme is shown to be asymptotically optimal as the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) goes to infinity, and interestingly, is shown to attain the secrecy capacity under the full CSI assumption. Overall, channel fading has a positive impact on the secrecy capacity and rate adaptation, based on the main channel CSI, is critical in facilitating secure communications over slow fading channels.   相似文献

There has been a considerable interest in determining the limits to communications over multipath fading channels. However, most studies have assumed that the channel is perfectly known at the receiver. In this paper, the random coding error exponent for flat fading channels with realistic channel state information (CSI) is studied. It is assumed that the CSI is obtained via some practical technique which utilizes a linear estimation scheme. Two commonly used techniques for channel estimation are considered in this paper, namely pilot tone extraction and pilot symbol transmission. The degradation in the achievable performance due to partial CSI is assessed and comparison of the different channel estimation methods is made. The focus of this paper is on the Jake's mobile Rayleigh flat fading model. Although Jake's model does not have a Markov property, such as that found in the commonly used exponential correlation model, which is usually attractive from the mathematical tractability point of view, Jake's model has a physical basis. Also, this model is considered herein from the standpoint of the random coding exponent. The results in this paper shed light on the amount of degradation in the achievable performance that is expected when the receiver has partial CSI. Finally, the sensitivity of the loss in achievable performance for the various channel estimation techniques with respect to channel parameters, such as Doppler spread and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), is studied  相似文献

Tomlinson-Harashima precoding with partial channel knowledge   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We consider minimum mean-square error Tomlinson-Harashima (MMSE-TH) precoding for time-varying frequency-selective channels. We assume that the receiver estimates the channel and sends the channel state information (CSI) estimate to the transmitter through a lossless feedback channel that introduces a certain delay. Thus, the CSI mismatch at the receiver is due to estimation errors, while the CSI mismatch at the transmitter is due to both estimation errors and channel time variations. We exploit a priori statistical channel knowledge, and we derive an optimal TH precoder, adopting a Bayesian approach. We use simulations to compare the performance of the so-derived TH precoder with that of the same-complexity MMSE decision-feedback equalizer (DFE). We observe that for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and sufficiently slow channel time variations, the optimal TH precoder outperforms the DFE, while at high SNR, the opposite happens.  相似文献

Code and receiver design for the noncoherent fast-fading channel   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper deals with the design of coding/modulation and demodulation/decoding schemes for single- or multiple-antenna systems with focus on fast-fading channels, where channel state information (CSI) is not available at the transmitter and the receiver. We explore two possible solutions for this channel with increasing degree of sophistication. The first one utilizes pilots at the transmitter and a simple and explicit noniterative channel estimation algorithm at the receiver. We show that this pilot-assisted system is exactly equivalent, in terms of performance analysis and design, to an appropriately "degraded" system having perfect CSI at the receiver. The second scheme utilizes pilots and a family of well-justified and simple suboptimal iterative detection/estimation algorithms. It is shown that when turbo-like codes are considered in conjunction with this pilot-assisted transmission scheme and the proposed receiver algorithm, the unitary constellations investigated in the literature are inferior to simple pilot-assisted constellations in both complexity and performance. Specific instances of the proposed systems (that use optimized irregular low-density parity-check outer codes) are designed. The design examples provided show that the proposed systems can achieve a good tradeoff between complexity and performance and can be used to bridge the gap between the high complexity/high-performance optimal scheme and low-complexity/mediocre performance noniterative estimation/coherent detection scheme.  相似文献

We propose a channel state information (CSI) feedback scheme based on unquantized and uncoded (UQ-UC) transmission. We consider a system where a mobile terminal obtains the downlink CSI and feeds it back to the base station using an uplink feedback channel. If the downlink channel is an independent Rayleigh fading channel, then the CSI may be viewed as an output of a complex independent identically distributed Gaussian source. Further, if the uplink feedback channel is an additive white Gaussian noise channel, and the downlink CSI is perfectly known at the mobile terminal, it can be shown that UQ-UC CSI transmission (that incurs zero delay) is optimal in that it achieves the same minimum mean-squared error distortion as a scheme that optimally (in the Shannon sense) quantizes and encodes the CSI, while theoretically incurring infinite delay. Since the UQ-UC transmission is suboptimal on correlated wireless channels, we propose a simple linear CSI feedback receiver that can be used to improve the performance of UQ-UC transmission while still retaining the attractive zero-delay feature. We provide bounds on the performance of such UQ-UC CSI feedback and study its impact on the achievable information rates. Furthermore, we explore its application and performance in multiple-antenna multiuser wireless systems, and also propose a corresponding pilot-assisted channel-state estimation scheme.  相似文献

We design a conceptual transmission scheme that adjusts rate and power of data codewords to send them over a slowly fading channel, when quantized and possibly erroneous channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter. The goal is to maximize the data throughput or the expected data rate using a multi-layer superposition coding technique and temporal power control at the transmitter. The main challenge here is to design a CSI quantizer structure for a noisy feedback link. This structure resembles conventional joint source and channel coding schemes, however, with a newly introduced quasi-gray bit-mapping. Our results show that with proper CSI quantizer design, even erroneous feedback can provide performance gains. Also, with an unreliable feedback link, superposition coding provides significant gains when feedback channel is poorly conditioned and channel uncertainty at the transmitter is severe, whereas power control is more effective with more reliable feedback.  相似文献

We propose a new technique for multi-resolution video/image data transmission over block fading channels. The proposed scheme uses an adaptive scheduling protocol employing a retransmission strategy in conjunction with a hierarchical signal constellation (known also as nonuniform, asymmetric, multi-resolution constellation) to give different transmission priorities to different resolution levels. Transmission priorities are given in terms of average packet loss rate as well as average throughput. Basically, according to the transmission scheduling and channel state (acknowledgment signal) of the previous transmission, it dynamically selects packets from different resolution levels to transmit for the current transmission. The bits from the selected packets are assigned to different hierarchies of a hierarchical 4/16-quadrature amplitude modulation to transmit them with different error protections. The selection of packets for transmission and the assignment of these selected packets to different hierarchies of the hierarchical constellation are referred to as the scheduling protocol in our proposed scheme. We model this protocol by a finite state first order Markov chain and obtain the packet loss rate and the packet transmission rate over Nakagami-m block fading channel in closed-form. Some selected numerical results show that the proposed scheme can control the relative packet loss rate and the packet transmission rate of different resolution levels by varying the priority parameter (or equivalently, the asymmetry) of the hierarchical constellation and the maximum number of allowed retransmissions.  相似文献

Multiple antenna systems are known to provide very large data rates, when the perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the receiver. However, this requires the receiver to perform a noise-free, multi-dimensional channel estimation, without using communication resources. In practice, any channel estimation is noisy and uses system resources. We shall examine the trade-off between improving channel estimation and increasing the achievable data rate. We consider transmitside correlated multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels with block fading, where each block is divided into training and data transmission phases. The receiver has a noisy CSI that it obtains through a channel estimation process, while the transmitter has partial CSI in the form of covariance feedback. In Part I of this two-part paper, we consider the single-user case, and optimize the achievable rate jointly over parameters associated with the training phase and data transmission phase. In particular, we first choose the training signal to minimize the channel estimation error, and then, develop an iterative algorithm to solve for the optimum system resources such as time, power and spatial dimensions. Specifically, the algorithm finds the optimum training duration, the optimum allocation of power between training and data transmission phases, the optimum allocation of power over the antennas during the data transmission phase.  相似文献

The transmission of video over time-varying wireless communication channels can benefit from the use of joint source-channel (JSC) coding methods. We survey relevant research in JSC code design and discuss how this work can be used for video compression and transmission. A main focus is the use of estimation-based techniques to take advantage of the residual redundancy present at the output of the source encoder. As noted in previous work, the combination of the source encoder and channel can often be modeled as a hidden Markov model. This statistical framework is the basis for state estimation and minimum mean-square error estimation procedures for JSC decoding, and it can also be used to develop channel state and channel parameter estimation methods. We discuss these approaches, along with work that also incorporates modulation, channel coding, and rate allocation within the JSC design. The integration of these methods into video compression standards is considered  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the rate-distortion optimized resource allocation for video transmission over multi-rate wireless direct-sequence code-division-multiple-access (DS-CDMA) channels. We consider the performance of transmitting scalable video over a multipath Rayleigh fading channel via a combination of multi-code multirate CDMA and variable sequence length multirate CDMA channel system. At the receiver, despreading is done using adaptive space-time auxiliary-vector (AV) filters. We propose a new interference cancelling design that uses just a single AV filter for single-user mutirate despreading. Our experimental results show that the proposed interference cancelling design has excellent performance in scalable video transmission over DS-CDMA systems that use a combination of multicode multirate and variable processing gain multirate CDMA. The proposed design takes advantage of the fact that single user's video data is transmitted using two spreading codes, one for the base layer and one for the enhancement layers, and of the fact that these spreading codes can have different processing gains. The proposed interference cancelling design is compared with two conventional single-user multirate CDMA receiver configurations, however now we use an AV filter rather than a simple matched filter. We also propose a resource allocation algorithm for the optimal determination of source coding rate, channel coding rate and processing gain for each scalable layer, in order to minimize the expected distortion at the receiver.  相似文献

Symbol Error Rate of MIMO MRC Systems over Time-Varying Fading Channels   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The outdated channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and receiver, which is resulted from time variation of channels, is considered in multiple-input multiple-output systems employing maximal ratio combining. Closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function of output signal-to-noise ratio and symbol error rate under time-varying channels are presented to evaluate the effect of outdated CSI. The analytical results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations and a good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

Reliable transmission of images and video over wireless networks must address both potentially limited bandwidths and the possibilities of loss. When bandwidth sufficient to transmit the bit stream is unavailable on a single channel, the data can be partitioned over multiple channels with possibly unequal bandwidths and error characteristics at the expense of more complex channel coding (i.e., error correction). This paper addresses the problem of efficiently channel coding and partitioning pre-encoded image and video bit streams into substreams for transmission over multiple channels with unequal and time-varying characteristics. Within channels, error protection is unequally applied based on both data decoding priority and channel packet loss rates, while cross-channel coding addresses channel failures. In comparison with conventional product codes, the resulting product code does not restrict the total encoded data to a rectangular structure; rather, the data in each channel is adaptively coded according to the channel's varying conditions. The coding and partitioning are optimized to achieve two performance criteria: maximum bandwidth efficiency and minimum delay. Simulation results demonstrate that this approach is effective under a variety of channel conditions and for a broad range of source material.  相似文献

We present a source-channel coding system for operation over code-division multiple-access channels with time-varying conditions. The proposed system consists of a multistage vector quantizer (MSVQ) in conjunction with unequal protection against channel errors. The receiver estimates the channel conditions and decodes as many stages of the quantizer as can be reliably decoded. The approach to system design and optimization is first derived and evaluated for a system that employs hard decoding of stage indices. The approach is then extended to the more general case of weighted decoding. Simulation results are given for transmission of Gauss-Markov sources over broadcast and slow fading channels. Consistent and substantial improvement is achieved over the standard MSVQ with equal error protection, and the gains, in terms of source signal-to-noise ratio, are in the range of 3-5 dB  相似文献
