The influence of starch content and sintering temperature on the preparation of alumina bodies were studied. The process was water-based and cassava starch was used as consolidator, binder and pore former. Colloidal suspensions were prepared with three different starch concentrations and the ideal dispersant content and gel point were determined by rheological analysis. The wet samples were demolded after consolidation in silicone mold at 60 °C for 2 h. After the drying step the samples were sintered at 1200, 1400 and 1600 °C, showing open porosities between 13 and 55%, depending on the starch content on the precursor suspensions and sintering temperature. The pore structures were analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and Hg porosimetry. Basically, the pore structures are dominated by large spherically shaped pores left by the starch particles, which are connected through small pore channels.  相似文献

This work aims at studying the influence of thermal treatment on the microstructure, resistivity and technological properties of porous alumina ceramics prepared via starch consolidation casting (SCC) technique. Colloidal suspensions were prepared with three different contents of alumina solid loading (55, 60 and 65 mass%) and corn starch (3, 8 and 13 mass%). The sintered samples at 1400, 1500, 1600 and 1700 °C, show open porosity between 46 and 64%, depending on the starch content in the precursor suspensions and sintering temperature. The pore structures were analyzed by SEM. The effect of corn starch content on the apparent porosity, pore size distribution, linear shrinkage and electrical resistivity as well as cold crushing strength of the sintered porous alumina ceramics was also measured. These porous alumina ceramics are promising porous ceramic materials for using in a wide range of thermal, electrical and bioceramics applications as well as filters/membranes and gas burners, due to their excellent combination properties.  相似文献

The natural mineral kaolin combined with alumina additives Al(OH)3,α-Al2O3 and AlF3 was used to prepare porous mullite ceramic membrane supports using an in-situ reaction. The effects of composition and sintering temperature on the sintering behavior, pore structure, permeability and microstructure of the resulting porous mullite supports were extensively investigated. The experimental results showed that excess SiO2 in kaolin can be consumed by adding alumina precursors, which resulted in a stiff skeleton of interlinked needle-like mullite crystals in-situ during the sintering. The needle-like mullite crystals touched each other and formed a short network, which acted as a porous skeletal network structure. This network resulted in a highly permeable porous structure. The resulting support is suitable for the preparation of asymmetric ceramic membranes. The densification and pore structure of the support can be effectively adjusted by control of the quantity of alumina precursors in the composition and the sintering temperature. Sintering the subject mullite compositions at 1500 °C for two hours resulted in support structures with an average porosity of 45.9%, an average pore size of 1.3 µm and a penetrating porosity of 35.9%.  相似文献

In this work, anorthite–mullite–corundum porous ceramics were prepared from construction waste and Al2O3 powders by adding AlF3 and MoO3 as mineralizer and crystallization catalyst, respectively. The effects of the sintering temperature and time on open porosity, mechanical properties, pore size distribution, microstructure, and phase composition were characterized in detail. The results showed that the formation of the mullite whiskers and the properties of the anorthite–mullite–corundum porous ceramics depended more on the sintering temperature than the holding time. By co-adding 12 wt% AlF3 and 4 wt% MoO3, mullite whiskers were successfully obtained at sintering temperatures upon 1350 °C for 1 h. Furthermore, the resultant specimens exhibited excellent properties, including open porosity of 66.1±0.7%, biaxial flexural strength of 23.8±0.9 MPa, and average pore size of 1.32 µm (the corresponding cumulative volume percent was 37.29%).  相似文献

Cordierite-silica bonded porous SiC ceramics were fabricated by infiltrating a porous powder compact of SiC with cordierite sol followed by sintering at 1300–1400 °C in air. The porosity, average pore diameter and flexural strength of the ceramics varied 30–36 vol%, ~ 4–22 µm and ~ 13–38 MPa respectively with variation of sintering temperature and SiC particle sizes. In the final ceramics SiC particles were bonded by the oxidation-derived SiO2 and sol-gel derived cordierite. The corrosion behaviour of sintered SiC ceramics was studied in acidic and alkaline medium. The porous SiC ceramics were observed to exhibit better corrosion resistance in acid solution.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dental zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) machinable ceramics. Six groups of gelcast ZTA ceramic samples sintered at temperatures between 1100 °C and 1450 °C were prepared. The microstructure was investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The mechanical properties were characterized by flexural strength, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, and machinability. Overall, with increasing temperature, the relative density, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness values increased and more tetragonal ZrO2 transformed into monoclinic ZrO2; on the other hand, the porosity and pore size decreased. Significantly lower brittleness indexes were observed in groups sintered below 1300 °C, and the lowest values were observed at 1200 °C. The highest flexural strength and fracture toughness of ceramics reached 348.27 MPa and 5.23 MPa m1/2 when sintered at 1450 °C, respectively. By considering the various properties of gelcast ZTA that varied with the sintering temperature, the optimal temperature for excellent machinability was determined to be approximately 1200–1250 °C, and in this range, a low brittleness index and moderate strength of 0.74–1.19 µm−1/2 and 46.89–120.15 MPa, respectively, were realized.  相似文献

A novel forming method for preparing porous alumina ceramics using alumina fibers as raw materials by direct coagulation casting (DCC) combined with 3D printing was proposed. Porous fibrous alumina ceramics were fabricated through temperature induced coagulation of aqueous-based DCC process using sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) as dispersant and adding K2SO4 as removable sintering additives. The sacrificial coated sand molds was fabricated by 3D printing technology, followed by the infiltration of silica sol solution for the subsequent suspension casting. Stable alumina suspension of 40 vol% solid loading was obtained by adding 2.0 wt% STPP and 40 wt% K2SO4. The controlled coagulation of the suspension could be realized after heating at 90 °C for about 35 min. The ceramic sample sintered at 1450 °C for 2 h showed the highest compressive strength of 24.33 MPa with porosity of 57.38%. All samples sintered at 1300–1450 °C had uniform pore size distributions with average pore size of 7.2 µm, which indicated the good structure stability when sintered at high temperature.  相似文献

Porous fibrous mullite ceramics with a narrow range of pore size distribution have been successfully prepared utilizing a near net-shape epoxy resin gel-casting process by using mullite fibers, Al2O3 and SiC as raw materials. The effects of sintering temperatures, different amounts of fibers and Y2O3 additive on the phase compositions, linear shrinkage, apparent porosity, bulk density, microstructure, compressive strength and thermal conductivity were investigated. The results indicated that mullite-bonded among fibers were formed in the porous fibrous mullite ceramics with a bird nest pore structure. After determining the sintering temperatures and the amount of fibers, the tailored porous fibrous mullite ceramics had a low linear shrinkage (1.36–3.08%), a high apparent porosity (61.1–71.7%), a relatively high compressive strength (4.4–7.6 MPa), a low thermal conductivity (0.378–0.467 W/m K) and a narrow range of pore size distribution (around 5 µm). The excellent properties will enable the porous ceramics as a promising candidate for the applications of hot gas filters, thermal insulation materials at high temperatures.  相似文献

Porous alumina ceramics with unidirectionally-oriented pores were prepared by extrusion. Carbon fibers of 14 μm diameter and 600 μm length to be used as the pore-forming agent were kneaded with alumina, binder and dispersing agent. The resulting paste was extruded, dried at 110 °C, degreased at 1000 °C and fired at 1600 °C for 2 h. SEM showed a microstructure of dispersed highly oriented pores in a dense alumina matrix. The pore area in the cross section was 25.3% with about 1700 pores/mm2. The pore size distribution of the fired body measured by Hg porosimetry showed a sharp peak corresponding to the diameter of the burnt-out carbon fibers. The resulting porous alumina ceramics with 38% total porosity showed a fracture strength of 171 MPa and a Young's modulus of 132 GPa. This strength is significantly higher than the reported value for other porous alumina ceramics even though the present pore size is much larger.  相似文献

Nanocrystalline gamma alumina (γ-Al2O3) powder with a crystallite size of ~10 nm was synthesized by oxidation of high purity aluminium plate in a humid atmosphere followed by annealing in air. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) at different sintering parameters (temperature, dwell time, heating rate, pressure) were studied for this highly porous γ-Al2O3 in correlation with the evolution in microstructure and density of the ceramics. SPS sintering cycles using different heating rates were carried out at 1050–1550 °C with dwell times of 3 min and 20 min under uniaxial pressure of 80 MPa. Alumina sintered at 1550 °C for 20 min reached 99% of the theoretical density and average grain size of 8.5 µm. Significant grain growth was observed in ceramics sintered at temperatures above 1250 °C.  相似文献

This paper reports a facile and environment-friendly process to synthesize electrically conductive porous alumina/graphite composites by starch consolidation technique followed by reductive sintering. Green ceramic composites were consolidated with different starches and sintered at different temperatures in an argon atmosphere. Electrical measurements, carbon contents and Raman analyses of carbon structures determined an optimal sintering temperature of 1700 °C, which lead to a uniform formation of conductive graphitic networks at an optimal concentration of about 3.8 vol% in the porous composites. These carbon networks resulted into porous composites having high electrical conductivities measured in the range from 3 to 7 S/cm, which depended on the starch types and their porous properties. Correspondingly, the bulk porosities of the sintered composites were measured from 42 to 46%, with rounded micropores having diameters ranging from 14 to 39 μm. These porous properties of the sintered composites offer promising applications for conductive membrane and porous electrode.  相似文献

Mullite-whisker-reinforced anorthite-mullite-corundum porous ceramics were prepared from construction waste and Al2O3 powder by adding AlF3 and MoO3 as the additive and crystallization catalyst, respectively. The effects of AlF3 and MoO3 content on the properties of mullite whiskers, such as open porosity, mechanical properties, pore size distribution, microstructure and phase structure, were investigated in detail. The results showed that the morphology of the mullite whiskers and properties of the porous ceramics were greatly influenced by the AlF3 and MoO3 content. The specimen obtained by co-adding 12 wt% AlF3 and 3 wt% MoO3, and sintering at 1350 °C for 1 h, exhibited excellent properties, including an open porosity of 67.4±0.5% and biaxial flexural strength of 24.0±0.8 MPa. The mullite whiskers were uniformly distributed; the whiskers had a diameter of 0.05–0.5 µm, length of 8–10 µm, and aspect ratios (length to diameter ratio) of 20–30 on average.  相似文献

High purity calcined carbonaceous kaolin and α-Al2O3 powders were employed to prepare porous mullite ceramics (Sample A) using graphite as pore former with the reaction sintering method. For the purpose of comparison, porous mullite ceramics (Sample B) was also fabricated from the uncalcined carbonaceous clay incorporated with α-Al2O3 powders. Mullitization in the two samples was both nearly complete at 1500 °C, despite the fact that calcination of the clay remarkably depressed mullitization and promoted the formation of glass phase. The Sample A sintered at 1500 °C fractured mainly in an intergranular way, while the Sample B mainly underwent transgranular fracture. The experimental results revealed that densification behavior/open porosity of the Sample A was far more sensitive to sintering temperature. The pore size of the Sample A as well as the Sample B sintered at 1500 °C was in a narrower range of 0.3–5 μm.  相似文献

Microstructural evolution on sintering of porcelain powder compacts using microwave radiation was compared with that in conventionally sintered samples. Using microwaves sintering temperature was reduced by ~ 75 °C and dwell time from 15 min to 5 min while retaining comparable physical properties i.e. apparent bulk density, water absorption to conventionally sintered porcelain. Porcelain powder absorbed microwave energy above 600 °C due to a rapid increase in its loss tangent. Mullite and glass were used as indicators of the microwave effect: mullite produced using microwaves had a nanofibre morphology with high aspect ratio (~ 32 ± 3:1) believed associated with a vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) formation mechanism not previously reported. Microwaves also produced mullite with different chemistry having ~ 63 mol% alumina content compared to ~ 60 mol% alumina in conventional sintered porcelain. This was likely due to accelerated Al+3 diffusion in mullite under microwave radiation. Liquid glass was observed to form at relatively low temperature (~ 900–1000 °C) using microwaves when compared to conventional sintering which promoted the porcelains ability to absorb them.  相似文献

Porous SiC ceramics were fabricated by the carbothermal reduction of polysiloxane-derived SiOC containing polymer microbeads followed by sintering. The effect of the SiC powder:polysiloxane-derived SiC (SiC:PDSiC) ratio on the porosity and flexural strength of the porous SiC ceramics were investigated. The porosity generally increased with decreasing SiC:PDSiC ratio when sintered at the same temperature. It was possible to control the porosity of porous SiC ceramics within a range of 32–64% by adjusting the sintering temperature and SiC:PDSiC ratio while keeping the sacrificial template content to 50 vol%.The flexural strengths generally decreased with increasing porosity at the same SiC:PDSiC ratio. However, a SiC:PDSiC ratio of 9:1 and a sintering temperature of 1750 °C resulted in excellent strength of 57 MPa at 50% porosity. Judicious selection of the sintering temperature and SiC:PDSiC ratio is an efficient way of controlling the porosity and strength of porous SiC ceramics.  相似文献

For recycling waste refractory materials in metallurgical industry, porous alumina ceramics were prepared via pore forming agent method from α-Al2O3 powder and slide plate renewable material. Effects of slide plate renewable material (SPRM) on densification, mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, phase composition and microstructure of the porous alumina ceramics were investigated. The results showed that SPRM effectively affected physical and thermal properties of the porous ceramics. With the increase of SPRM, apparent porosity of the ceramic materials firstly increased and then decreased, which brought an opposite change for the bulk density and thermal conductivity values, whereas the bending strength didn’t decrease obviously. The optimum sample A2 with 50 wt% SPRM introducing sintered at 1500 °C obtained the best properties. The water absorption, apparent porosity, bulk density, bending strength and thermal conductivity of the sample were 31.7%, 62.8%, 1.71 g/cm3, 47.1 ± 3.7 MPa and 1.73 W/m K, respectively. XRD analysis indicated that a small quantity of silicon carbide and graphite in SPRM have been oxidized to SiO2 during the firing process, resulting in rising the porous microstructures. SEM micrographs illustrated that rod-like mullite grains combined with plate-like corundum grains to endow the samples with high bending strength. This study was intended to confirm the preparation of porous alumina ceramics with high porosity, good mechanical properties and low thermal conductivity by using SPRM as pore forming additive.  相似文献

Porous mullite ceramics with unidirectionally oriented pores were prepared by an extrusion method to investigate their capillary rise properties. Rayon fibers 16.5 μm in diameter and 800 μm long were used as the pore formers by kneading with alumina powder, kaolin clay, China earthen clay and binder with varying Fe2O3 contents of 0, 5 and 7 mass%. The resulting pastes were extruded into cylindrical tubes (outer diameter (OD) 30–50 mm and inner diameter (ID) 20–30 mm), dried at room temperature and fired at 1500 °C for 4 h. The bulk densities of the resulting porous ceramics ranged from 1.31 to 1.67 g/cm3, with apparent porosities of 43.2–59.3%. The pore size distributions measured by Hg porosimetry showed a sharp peak at 10.0 μm in the sample without Fe2O3 and at 15.6 μm in the samples containing Fe2O3; these pores, which arose from the burnt-out rayon fibers, corresponded to total pore volumes ranging from 0.24 to 0.34 ml/g. SEM showed a microstructure consisting of unidirectionally oriented pores in a porous mullite matrix. Prismatic mullite crystals were well developed on the surfaces of the pore walls owing to the liquid phase formed by the Fe2O3 component added to color the samples. The bending strengths of the tubular samples ranged from 15.6 to 26.3 MPa. The height of capillary rise, measured under controlled relative humidities (RH) of 50, 65 and 85%, was greater in the ceramics containing Fe2O3 than in those without Fe2O3, especially in the thinner samples. The maximum capillary rise reached about 1300 mm, much higher than previously reported. This excellent capillary rise ability is thought to be due to the controlled pore size, pore distribution and pore orientation in these porous mullite ceramics.  相似文献

Porous silica ceramics were obtained at low forming pressure and low sintering temperature by using diatomaceous earth as a silica source and boric acid as an inexpensive additive. The starting raw material, diatomite from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was purified from organic and inorganic impurities by using heat and chemical treatment. Boric acid was used as binding and sintering aid up to 2 wt%. Powder was compacted by using different pressures of 40, 60 and 80 MPa. The pressed samples were sintered at 850, 1000, 1150, and 1300 °C for 4 h in air. A relatively high porosity in the range of 60–70% is obtained for the samples pressed at 40, 60 and 80 MPa and sintered at 1000 °C. Median pore size diameters are in the range of macroporous up to 2 μm in the samples sintered at 1150 and 1300 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scaning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry measurements were employed to characterize the phases, functional groups, microstructure and pore size distribution of the obtained samples. In addition, measurements of densities and open porosities by immersion technique, according to Archimedes principle, were used. The relations between mechanical properties (Young modulus, Poisson ratio, and compressive strength) versus content of boric acid in the investigated samples were studied and disscussed.  相似文献

Porous silica ceramics were obtained at low forming pressure (40–80 MPa) and low sintering temperature (850–1300 °C) for 4 h in air. In-situ grown mullite toughened zirconia ceramics (mullite-zirconia ceramics) with excellent mechanical properties for potential applications in dental materials were fabricated by gelcasting combined with pressureless sintering. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mullite-zirconia ceramics was investigated. The results indicated that the columnar mullite produced by reaction was evenly distributed in the zirconia matrix and the content and size of that increased with the increase of sintering temperature. Mullite-zirconia ceramics sintered at 1500 °C had the optimum content and size of the columnar mullite phase, generating the excellent mechanical properties (the bend strength of 890.4 MPa, the fracture toughness of 10.2 MPa.m1/2, the Vickers hardness of 13.2 GPa and the highest densification). On the other hand, zirconia particles were evenly distributed inside the columnar mullite, which improved the mechanical properties of columnar mullite because of pinning effect. All of this clearly confirmed that zirconia grains strengthened columnar mullite, and thus the columnar mullite was more effective in enhancing the zirconia-based ceramics. Simultaneously, the residual alumina after reaction was distributed evenly in the form of particle, which improved the mechanical properties of the sample because of pinning effect. Overall, the synergistic effect of zirconia phase transformation toughening with mullite and alumina secondary toughening improved the mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics.  相似文献
