Spatial price analysis of used construction equipment: the case of excavators

Equipment represents one of the largest input expenditures for the construction sector and other firms. Yet, prices of used construction equipment have not been widely studied in the economic literature. A spatial hedonic price function is specified and estimated for used excavators sold by auction in North America from 1996 to 2006. The results indicate that prices of used excavators differ significantly for various reasons. Controlling for characteristics of the machinery, we find evidence of regional price variation and ‘within sale’ spatial effects. Prices also vary between auction houses themselves.

Spatial dependence in the technical efficiency of local banks

Cooperative banks primarily compete with one another because they target niche markets that large banks typically ignore. The current study shows that in this competitive environment, the connection between financial intermediaries affects the operational efficiency of small banks. The findings indicate that the capitalization, diversification strategies, funding costs, liquidity, credit quality, and risk of bank neighbors have spillover effects on technical efficiency. Thus, bank networks trigger a cascading effect that demands the attention of bank stakeholders.

Spatial effects on local government efficiency

Little attention has been paid to the spatial pattern of local government efficiency. This paper intends to fill this gap by conducting an empirical analysis of a sample of 246 Italian municipalities over the decade 1998–2008. Municipal government efficiency is measured in terms of the speed of payments. Estimation results reveal that municipalities mimic the speed with which public spending is carried out by their neighbours. Political yardstick competition is found to be the source of mimicking behaviour in the speed of payments.

Bucket trajectory classification of mining excavators

Large mining excavators impose numerous challenges to the operator during a dig. A semi-automated or fully automated machine that could assist the operator during excavation would positively affect efficiency, ore selectivity, and reduce machine wear at the same time. Besides, the dependence on operator skills and attentiveness will be reduced. In order to realize any control on an excavator, it is prudent to know the dig patterns followed by the operator during a real time dig. This paper aims to classify the dig by analyzing the actual task performed by the operator. The trajectories are classified based on the location and angle of the bucket. Both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analyses of the bucket trajectory were performed on a EX 3500 mining excavator at the Newmont open pit mine using Arial Performance Analysis System (APAS).

Some factors affecting the uniaxial strength of weak sandstones

The paper reports on a study of the weak sandstones of the Shihti and Kweichulin Formations to the east of Taipei, Taiwan. The results indicate that the wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the samples decreased as water content increased, while wave velocity, UCS and slake durability increased with increasing porosity. Regression analyses demonstrated that wave velocity, UCS and slake durability decreased with increased quartz content. The values of these engineering properties also increased with a higher proportion of matrix/detritus, although the exact nature of the interrelationships between these factors is not clear.
