DNA microarrays, which allow for the parallel analysis of thousands of genes, have become the most popular functional genomic tool in use today. Substantial data sets are currently being produced by researchers in both the public and the private sector. Proceeding at a significantly slower rate than its complement, microarray data generation, the analysis of microarray data is a true bottleneck for research. The situation will only become more serious in the future, as DNA microarray technology becomes less expensive and projects increase both in number and in size. Clearly, in order to realize the full promise of microarray technology, bioinformatics solutions must evolve. The research microarray database is a crucial step in the evolution of bioinformatics software for modern genomic-scale science. The role of the research microarray database is to support microarray data analysis in the context of a collaborative research environment. At the current stage of microarray research, there are four principal requirements a microarray research database should satisfy. It must be able to store microarray data, store the annotation of the data, store a detailed record of the tasks performed while working with the data, and support research collaboration. Each of the four requirements presents challenges of its own. In conclusion, relational database management systems (DBMSs) have been under active, intensive development for over 20 years. In these two decades, the challenges and issues discussed here have been addressed by the designers of relational database engines. State-of-the-art security features are built into every major DMBS, allowing users to share data safely in a multi-user environment, such as the Internet. Advanced concurrency control ensures data integrity and consistency. A DBMS is the ideal solution for the Internet-connected world of research and data analysis. 相似文献

A decade ago, a major research initiative, with orchestrated monetary and programmatic support from both industry and the government, was launched to investigate the biological effects and health implications of radio frequency (RF) radiation emitted from cellular mobile telephones. The subject remains a focus of public concern and shows no sign of relenting. There is a lack of scientific consensus on experimental studies that provide clear evidence either refuting or supporting the cancer induction or promotion potential of RF and microwave radiation from cell phones. In the fall quarter of 1997, the Auburn University Electrical Engineering Department (USA) implemented a new, interdisciplinary core laboratory sequence. This new laboratory sequence was one outcome of a complete curriculum revision based on four years of work by the departmental Curriculum Study Committee. This paper presents the laboratory curriculum design, and the results of a multi-part assessment conducted beginning one year after implementation. Many students are initially surprised by the level of challenge provided in the first laboratory course, but readily accommodate as they progress through the sequence. A multifaceted assessment strategy has evolved which uses end-of-term student evaluations, retrospective student evaluations, student oral interviews, and faculty interviews. The assessment information is used to improve the laboratories through modification of the laboratory manuals, better instructions to graduate teaching assistants, modifications of experiments, and a purposeful effort to keep all faculty informed of laboratory course content so they can build upon the laboratory experience in classroom teaching. The overall result of the new laboratory experience is that students have a more integrated approach to design and a much better understanding of the hardware, software and instrumentation used in electrical engineering practice. In addition, students who complete the sequence have better oral and written communication skills, and are more confident in approaching job interviews and initial job challenges 相似文献

An approach is described that utilizes a relational database for data storage, accessible directly for computational purposes during different stages of plant design, and for maintenance and expansion purposes as the future requires. Examples that use the database for design and verification are included. The authors describe how error-prone manual steps can be eliminated by handling data automatically for calculations, extracting from the database those values which were the results of prior calculations.
