The three-dimensional (3D) orthogonal interlocked fabric contains through-the-thickness rein-forcement in order to enhance the interlaminar fracture toughness of the composite. The interlaminar fracture toughness of a carbon-epoxy orthogonal interlocked fabric composite was experimentally determined by use of the recently developed tabbed double cantilever beam specimen. The data reduction methods applicable to these tests and materials and the interpretation of the results were discussed. The results of critical strain energy release rate,G Ic, were compared to those of a two-dimensional (2D) laminate having the same in-plane structure. The energy-dissipating crack propagation processes were described. The in-plane fracture toughness of the 3D fabric was experimentally measured and compared to that of the 2D laminate. The through-the-thickness fibres were found to create a ten-fold increase in interlaminar toughness, and a 25% improvement in the in-plane fracture toughness.  相似文献

A 5050 wt % mixture of commingled glass/polypropylene fibre system was selected to study the correlations between the morphological details, mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and corresponding failure mechanisms. Mode II interlaminar fracture tests were performed by using the end-notched flexure test procedure. Compared to conventional composite laminates, mode II interlaminar crack extension in these commingled yarn-based composites was very stable, and extensive fibre nesting occurred along the main crack plane. Crack jumping and non-broken matrix links were observed.R-curve behaviour for these materials was identified and the toughness for initiation was much lower than that for propagation. Compared to mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, similar trends in effects of cooling rates and isothermal crystallizations on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness were observed. However, the effects were not as significant as those found for mode I interlaminar fracture toughness.Alexander von Humboldt Fellow.  相似文献

The dynamic crack growth behavior of adhesively bonded joints under mode I and mixed mode (I + II) loading were investigated. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus and the digital image correlation (DIC) technique were employed to determine the mode I fracture toughness of the adhesively bonded joints during crack propagation under impact loading. The dynamic crack growth behavior for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) adhesively bonded joints under mode I loading was studied using this method. In order to verify the proposed method, the dynamic crack growth behavior of titanium alloy adhesively bonded joints was also studied. Moreover, the crack growth behavior of CFRP adhesively bonded joints under mixed mode loading was studied using the SHPB technique. For the considered CFRP adhesively bonded joints, the fracture toughness decreased under both mode I and mixed mode loading as the loading rate increased. Microscope observation showed that a shift in the crack location occurred in the high loading tests.  相似文献

To study crack dynamic propagation behaviour and rock dynamic fracture toughness, a single cleavage triangle (SCT) specimen was proposed in this paper. By using these specimens and a drop‐weight test system, impact experiments were conducted, and the crack propagation velocity and the fracture time were measured by using crack propagation gauges. To examine the effectiveness of the SCT specimen and to predict the test results, finite difference numerical models were established by using AUTODYN code, and the simulation results showed that the crack propagation path agrees with the test results, and crack arrest phenomena could happen. Meanwhile, by using these numerical models, the crack dynamic propagation mechanism was investigated. Finite element code ABAQUS was applied in the calculation of crack dynamic stress intensity factors (SIFs) based on specimen dimension and the loading curves measured, and the curves of crack dynamic SIFs versus time were obtained. The fracture toughness (including initiation toughness and propagation toughness) was determined according to the fracture time and crack speeds measured by crack propagation gauges. The results show that the SCT specimen is applicable to the study of crack dynamic propagation behaviour and fracture toughness, and in the process of crack propagation, the propagation toughness decreases with crack propagation velocity, and the crack arrest phenomena could happen. The critical SIF of an arrest crack (or arrest toughness) was higher than the crack propagation toughness but was lower than the initiation toughness.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of fibre lay-up and matrix toughness on mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc and GIIc) of marine composites. Unidirectional and woven roving fibres were used as reinforcements. Two vinyl ester resins with different toughness were used as matrices. Results from both modes showed toughness variation that is consistent with matrix toughness. Values of GIc were not significantly influenced by fibre lay-up except at peak load points in the woven roving/brittle-matrix composite. Each peak load point, caused by interlocked bridging fibres, signified the onset of unstable crack growth. For unidirectional specimens, crack growth was stable and GIc statistically more reliable than woven roving specimens, which gave fewer GIc values due to frequent unstable crack growth. Mode II tests revealed that, except for crack initiation, GIIc was higher in woven roving composites. This was due to fibre bridging, perpendicular to the crack growth direction, which encouraged stable crack growth and increased energy absorption. Mode II R-curves were obtained for the woven roving specimens. These R-curves provide additional information useful for characterising delamination resistance. The paper concludes that composites with woven roving fibres show similar mode I delamination characteristics to the unidirectional composites; but their mode II delamination characteristics, after crack initiation, are quite different.  相似文献

The hygrothermal effect on the fracture behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates has been investigated as part of an overall effort to develop a methodology for damage-tolerance predictions in advanced composite materials. Several T300/934 laminates were tested using a number of specimen configurations (double cantilever, compact tension, and cracked lap shear) in order to evaluate the effects of temperature and humidity on delamination fracture toughness under Mode I and Mode II loading. The specimens were exposed to different humidity levels and temperatures for varying periods of time prior to testing. The preexposed specimens were tested under room conditions, and fracture energies during initiation and propagation were estimated. Acoustic emission was used to detect crack initiation. It was indicated that moisture has a slightly beneficial influence on fracture toughness or critical strain energy release rate during Mode I delamination but a slightly deleterious effect on Mode II delamination and Mode I transverse cracking. The failed specimens were examined by scanning electron miscroscope (SEM) and topographical differences due to fracture modes were identified. The effect of moisture on fracture topography could not be distinguished.  相似文献

The fracture toughness of medium density fiberboard (MDF) as a function of crack length (R curve) was measured. Fracture toughness was determined from force–displacement and crack length data using a new energy analysis procedure that avoids the scatter of prior discrete analysis methods. Because crack lengths were difficult to observe, they were measured using digital image correlation (DIC). The R curves for two different densities of MDF, two thicknesses, and for both in-plane and through-the-thickness cracks all increased linearly with crack length. The increase was interpreted as the development of a fiber-bridging process zone. Numerical modeling methods were used to determine the cohesive stress of the fiber-bridging zone.  相似文献

A comparison was made between tensile (mode I) and shear (mode II) fracture characteristics in high strength aluminium alloys (7075-T6 and 6061-T651) using a relatively new mode II fracture specimen to evaluate the critical stress intensity factor. The enlarged plastic zone during mode II fracture required that an increased specimen thickness be used for determining K Hc under a purely plane strain condition. Plane stress conditions prevailed in the mode II fracture of 7075-T6 with a specimen thickness less than 10 mm, while plane strain controlled mode II fracture at a thickness of 10 mm or greater. Fractographic analysis revealed a distinctive difference in the micromechanisms responsible for crack extension. Small dimples were observed only on the mode II fracture surfaces, resulting from a microvoid nucleation fracture mechanism. The mode I fracture surfaces showed a mixed distribution of dimple sizes resulting from a void growth fracture mechanism. Comparing the critical stress intensity factors, the shear mode of failure exhibited a substantially higher value than the tensile mode, resulting from the effect of the sign and magnitude of the hydrostatic stress state on the microvoid nucleation event. Zero hydrostatic tension in the mode II loading configuration helps delay microvoid nucleation, increasing the apparent toughness. The high hydrostatic tension resulting from a mode I loading configuration enhances microvoid nucleation which promotes crack propagation at relatively lower stress intensity factors.  相似文献

Crack-tip transformation zones, crack shielding and crack-growth-resistance (R-curve) behaviors of a transformation-toughened ceria-partially stabilized zirconia–alumina (Ce-TZP/alumina) composite were studied in mode II and combined mode I and mode II loading using compact-tension-shear (CTS) specimens. The mode II and mode I stress intensities for both the initial straight cracks and the subsequent kinked cracks were assessed by the method of caustics using geometrically equivalent specimens of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The angle of formation of the transformation zones as well as of extension of the cracks increased systematically with increasing ratio of the mode II and the mode I stress intensities and approached a value of θ*=−72° in pure mode II loading. This angle was close to the angle for maximum hoop tension in the stress field of a mode II crack (θ*=−70.5°). A crack-initiation toughness envelope was constructed on a KIKII diagram using the critical loads for incremental crack extension. The crack-initiation toughness in pure mode II loading was less than the corresponding toughness in mode I loading. This result was consistent with calculations that indicated no shielding from the asymmetric and elongated zones developed in mode II loading. The fracture toughness measured for the kinked cracks at long kink lengths approached the maximum fracture toughness measured for a mode I crack.  相似文献

Critical strain energy release rate of glass/epoxy laminates using the virtual crack closure technique for mode I, mode II, mixed-mode I + II and mode III were determined. Mode I, mode II, mode III and mixed-mode I + II fracture toughness were obtained using the double cantilever beam test, the end notch flexure test, the edge crack torsion test and the mixed-mode bending test respectively. Results were analysed through the most widely used criteria to predict delamination propagation under mixed-mode loading: the Power Law and the Benzeggagh and Kenane criteria. Mixed-mode fracture toughness results seem to represent the data with reasonable accuracy.  相似文献

Fracture toughness of AZ31B magnesium alloy subjected to quasi-static loading was investigated by infrared thermography. The results showed that temperature evolution around the crack propagation path during fracture underwent three stages: initial steady stage, monotonic increase stage and final steady stage. The temperature increase at the beginning of stage II is nearly corresponding to the initiation of unstable crack propagation. And based on this phenomenon, a method applying infrared thermography to estimate fracture toughness of AZ31B magnesium alloy was proposed. Fracture toughness was calculated through infrared thermography, which was in good agreement with the result determined by traditional standard method. Finally, the fracture mechanism was investigated.  相似文献

Four low-carbon microalloyed pipeline steel plates were studied with two chemical compositions and different thermo-mechanical treatments, leading to either ferritic–pearlitic or ferritic–bainitic microstructures.Microstructural and mechanical properties were investigated. An original dynamic tensile experiment is used to study crack propagation in full-thickness wide plates under either quasi-static and dynamic conditions. In the latter case, crack speeds up to 20–40 m s−1 were reached and led to ductile shear crack propagation as observed in pipe bursts, while mode I in-plane crack propagation was observed in most quasi-static tests. Shear mode fracture results from strain localization under dynamic conditions and may be detrimental to steel toughness. Steel resistance to crack propagation is evaluated with the use of the energy dissipation rate parameter. The effect of the microstructure as well as material parameters like the anisotropic behavior on fracture toughness were evaluated. It is shown that ferritic–bainitic steels exhibit a better yield stress–toughness compromise than ferritic–pearlitic ones.In a companion paper (Engng. Fract. Mech., submitted for publication), the numerical simulation of crack propagation in wide plates using fully coupled local approach to fracture is presented.  相似文献

The mixed-mode loading of a rubbery particulate composite is studied experimentally. Linear fracture mechanics concepts are used to determine the initiation of growth, the initial growth direction, and the subsequent growth rate for a range of mode mixities. The fracture toughness locus is determined to be elliptical, with the Mode II toughness being lower than its Mode I counterpart. The initial growth directions correlate with maximum strain energy density theories. The crack growth rates can be modeled effectively using an equivalent Mode I crack.  相似文献

The effect of rubber modification on fracture toughness of adhesive joints under mode II loading condition was investigated in comparison with that under mode I loading, wherein the two adhesives rubber-modified and unmodified were used. To evaluate the fracture toughness on the basis of R-curve characteristics under mode II loading condition, four-point bend tests had been conducted for the adhesively bonded end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens. Thus obtained R-curves revealed the following trend: its behavior did not appear for the unmodified adhesive, whereas the rubber-modified adhesive exhibited a typical behavior. In the initial stage of crack propagation, G IIC of the rubber-modified adhesive is lower than that of the unmodified adhesive, but becomes greater in the range of Δa > 25 mm. Nevertheless, the significant improvement of the fracture toughness with the rubber modification under mode I loading condition was not observed under mode II loading. Moreover, FEM analysis was made to elucidate the relation between the above fracture behavior and stress distributions near the crack tip. The results gave the reasonable relationship between evolution of plastic zone and the area with high void-fraction as well as the R-curves behavior. In addition, macroscopic and SEM observations for the fracture surfaces were also conducted.  相似文献

Ductile sheet structures are frequently subjected to mixed mode loading, resulting that the structure is under the influence of a mixed mode stress field. Instances of interest are when stable crack growth occurs and when the crack-tip is propagating in this complex mixed-mode condition, prior to final fracture. Purposely designed apparatus was built to test thin-sheets of steel (Grade: DX51D) under mixed-mode I/II. These tests, under plane stress conditions, also investigated the effect of thickness on the specific essential work of fracture or the fracture toughness of the material under quasi-static cracking conditions. The fracture toughness is evaluated under incremental mixed-mode loading conditions. The direction of the propagating crack path and fracture type were observed and discussed as the loading mixity was varied. Whilst the specific essential work of fracture or fracture toughness was obtained using the energy approach, the theoretical analysis of the fracture type and direction of crack path were based on the crack tip stresses and fracture criterions of maximum hoop stress and maximum shear stress along with the utilisation of Hill’s theory. For mixed-mode I/II loading, the variation in the fracture toughness contributions ratios are evaluated and used predicatively using the established energy criterion approach to the crack tip stress intensity approach. The comparison between the theoretical directions of the crack path, failure mode propagation are in good agreement with those obtained from experimental testing indicating the definite link between both approaches.  相似文献

A crack propagation criterion for a rock–concrete interface is employed to investigate the evolution of the fracture process zone (FPZ) in rock–concrete composite beams under three‐point bending (TPB). According to the criterion, cracking initiates along the interface when the difference between the mode I stress intensity factor at the crack tip caused by external loading and the one caused by the cohesive stress acting on the fictitious crack surfaces reaches the initial fracture toughness of a rock–concrete interface. From the experimental results of the composite beams with various initial crack lengths but equal depths under TPB, the interface fracture parameters are determined. In addition, the FPZ evolution in a TPB specimen is investigated by using a digital image correlation technique. Thus, the fracture processes of the rock–concrete composite beams can be simulated by introducing the initial fracture criterion to determine the crack propagation. By comparing the load versus crack mouth opening displacement curves and FPZ evolution, the numerical and experimental results show a reasonable agreement, which verifies the numerical method developed in this study for analysing the crack propagation along the rock–concrete interface. Finally, based on the numerical results, the effect of ligament length on the FPZ evolution and the variations of the fracture model during crack propagation are discussed for the rock–concrete interface fracture under TPB. The results indicate that ligament length significantly affects the FPZ evolution at the rock–concrete interface under TPB and the stress intensity factor ratio of modes II to I is influenced by the specimen size during the propagation of the interfacial crack.  相似文献

In this paper a mode II fracture testing method has been developed for wood from analytical, experimental and numerical investigations. Analytical results obtained by other researchers showed that the specimen geometry and loading type used for the proposed mode II testing method results in only mode II stress intensity and no mode I stress intensity at the crack tip. Experiments have been carried out to determine mode II fracture toughness K IIC and fracture energy G IIF from the test data collected from both spruce (pice abies) and poplar (populus nigra) specimens. It was found that there existed a very good relation between fracture toughness KIIC and fracture energy G IIF when the influence of orthotropic stiffness E II * in mode II was taken into account. It verified that for this mode II testing method the formula of LEFM can be employed for calculating mode II fracture toughness even for highly orthotropic materials like wood. In the numerical studies for the tested spruce specimen, the crack propagation process, stress and strain fields in front of crack tips and the stress distributions along the ligament have been investigated in detail. It can be seen that the simulated crack propagating process along the ligament is a typical shear cracking pattern and the development of cracks along the ligament is due to shear stress concentrations at the crack tips of the specimen. It has been shown that this mode II fracture testing method is suitable for measuring mode II fracture toughness K IIC for highly orthotropic materials like wood.  相似文献
