The 30-cell nickel-yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) hydrogen electrode-supported planar solid oxide electrolyzer (SOE) stack modules were manufactured and tested at 800 °C in steam electrolysis mode for hydrogen production. The electrolysis efficiency of the stack modules was higher than 100% at a total steam and hydrogen flow of 2.1 sccm cm−2, a H2O/H2 ratio of 80/20, and a current density of <0.2 A cm−2. The electrolysis efficiency, current efficiency, and actual hydrogen production rate of the stack modules increased with increasing H2O/H2 ratio at a constant current density. However, the electrolysis and current efficiencies decreased steadily at high current densities. During hydrogen production, the stack modules were operated at 800 °C and a constant current density of 0.15 A cm−2 for up to 1100 h. A steam conversion rate of 62% and current efficiency of 87.4% were obtained; the actual hydrogen production rate reached as high as 103.6 N L h−1. Post-mortem analysis showed that delamination of the LSM–YSZ oxygen electrode mainly occurred in the steam and air inlet area of the 10×10 cm2 cells.  相似文献

The performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with gas diffusion cathodes having the catalyst layer applied directly onto Nafion membranes is investigated with the aim at characterizing the effects of the Nafion content, the catalyst loading in the electrode and also of the membrane thickness and gases pressures. At high current densities the best fuel cell performance was found for the electrode with 0.35 mg Nafion cm−2 (15 wt.%), while at low current densities the cell performance is better for higher Nafion contents. It is also observed that a decrease of the usual Pt loading in the catalyst layer from 0.4 to ca. 0.1 mg Pt cm−2 is possible, without introducing serious problems to the fuel cell performance. A decrease of the membrane thickness favors the fuel cell performance at all ranges of current densities. When pure oxygen is supplied to the cathode and for the thinner membranes there is a positive effect of the increase of the O2 pressure, which raises the fuel cell current densities to very high values (>4.0A cm−2, for Nafion 112—50 μm). This trend is not apparent for thicker membranes, for which there is a negligible effect of pressure at high current densities. For H2/air PEMFCs, the positive effect of pressure is seen even for thick membranes.  相似文献

This paper presents results of recent investigations to develop an optimized in-house membrane electrode assembly (MEA) preparation technique combining catalyst ink spraying and assembly hot pressing. Only easy steps were chosen in this preparation technique in order to simplify the method, aiming at cost reduction. The influence of MEA fabrication parameters like electrode pressing or annealing on the performance of hydrogen fuel cells was studied by single cell measurements with H2/O2 operation. Toray paper and carbon cloth as gas diffusion layer (GDL) materials were compared and the composition of electrode inks was optimized with regard to most favorable fuel cell performance. Commercial E-TEK catalyst was used on the anode and cathode with Pt loadings of 0.4 and 0.6 mg/cm2, respectively. The MEA with best performance delivered approximately 0.58 W/cm2, at 65 °C cell temperature, 80 °C anode humidification, dry cathode and ambient pressure on both electrodes. The results show, that changing electrode compositions or the use of different materials with same functionality (e.g. different GDLs), have a larger effect on fuel cell performance than changing preparation parameters like hot pressing or spraying conditions, studied in previous work.  相似文献

We have adopted three different methods: dip-coating, brush pen painting, and ion-impregnating, to fabricate cathodes for anode-supported tubular solid oxide fuel cells; and studied the performances of the cells using cathodes fabricated by these three different methods. The cell with ion-impregnated cathode presented the best electrochemical performances in these three cells, and it generated a maximum power density of 446 mW cm−2 at 850 °C, when operating with humidified hydrogen. The cells with dip-coated cathode and brush pen painted cathode produced acceptable electrochemical performances; they generated maximum power densities of 403 and 405 mW cm−2 at 850 °C, respectively, when running on humidified hydrogen; also, they represented more stable, much easier processes and lower cost.  相似文献

CO tolerance of H2-air single cell with phosphoric acid doped polybenzidazole (PA-PBI) membrane was studied in the temperature range 140-180 °C using either dry or humidified fuel. Fuel composition was varied from neat hydrogen to 67% (vol.) H2-33% CO mixtures. It was found that poisoning by CO of Pt/C and Pt-Ru/C hydrogen oxidation catalysts is mitigated by fuel humidification. Electrochemical hydrogen oxidation at Pt/C and Pt-Ru/C catalysts in the presence of up to 50% CO in dry or humidified H2-CO mixtures was studied in a cell driven mode at 180 °C. High CO tolerance of Pt/C and Pt-Ru/C catalysts in FC with PA-PBI membrane at 180 °C can be ascribed to combined action of two factors—reduced energy of CO adsorption at high temperature and removal of adsorbed CO from the catalyst surface by oxidation. Rate of electrochemical CO oxidation at Pt/C and Pt-Ru/C catalysts was measured in a cell driven mode in the temperature range 120-180 °C. Electrochemical CO oxidation might proceed via one of the reaction paths—direct electrochemical CO oxidation and water-gas shift reaction at the catalyst surface followed by electrochemical hydrogen oxidation stage. Steady state CO oxidation at Pt-Ru/C catalyst was demonstrated using CO-air single cell with Pt-Ru/C anode. At 180 °C maximum CO-air single cell power density was 17 mW cm−2 at cell voltage U = 0.18 V.  相似文献

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) have received extensive attention for encouraging energy conversion and storage efficiencies. One of the key obstacles hindering the development of PCECs is the time-consuming and costly fabrication processes. In this study, we have fabricated fuel electrode-supported tubular PCECs via a facile and well-controlled phase inversion methhod combined with a dip-coating process. When operated in a fuel cell (FC) mode, single cells exhibit excellent peak power densities of 0.48, 0.91, 1.50, and 2.62 W cm-2 at 550–700 ℃, respectively. While in electrolysis cell (EC) mode, these tubular cells achieve high electrolysis current densities of − 0.61, − 1.59, − 3.03, and − 4.67 A cm-2 with reasonable Faradaic efficiencies at 550–700 ℃ and an applied voltage of 1.3 V, respectively. Additionally, cells can be stably operated at 0.5 A cm-2 for 120 h in FC mode and − 0.5 A cm-2 for 110 h in EC mode at 650 °C.  相似文献

The performance of a Nafion 112 based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell was tested at a temperature range from 23 °C to 120 °C. The fuel cell polarization curves were divided into two different ranges based on current density, namely, <0.4 A/cm2 and >0.4 A/cm2, respectively. These two ranges were treated separately with respect to electrode kinetics and mass transfer. In the high current density range, a linear increase in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) power density with increasing temperature was observed, indicating the advantages of high temperature operation.Simulation based on electrode reaction kinetic theory, experimental polarization curves, and measured cathodic apparent exchange current densities all gave temperature dependent apparent exchange current densities. Both the calculated partial pressures of O2 and H2 gas in the feed streams and the measured electrochemical Pt surface areas (EPSAs) decrease with increasing temperature. They were also used to obtain the intrinsic exchange current densities. A monotonic increase of the intrinsic exchange current densities with increasing temperature in the range of 23-120 °C was observed, suggesting that increasing the temperature does promote intrinsic kinetics of fuel cell reactions.There are two sets of cathode apparent exchange current densities obtained, one set is for the low current density range, and the other is for the high current density range. The different values of cathode current densities in the two current density ranges can be attributed to the different states of the cathode Pt catalyst surface. In the low current density range, the cathode catalyst surface is a Pt/PtO, and in the high current density range, the catalyst surface becomes pure Pt.  相似文献

A silicon-based micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) for portable applications has been developed and its electrochemical characterization carried out in this study. Anode and cathode flowfields with channel and rib width of 750 μm and channel depth of 400 μm were fabricated on Si wafers using the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology. A membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) was specially fabricated to mitigate methanol crossover. This MEA features a modified anode backing structure in which a compact microporous layer is added to create an additional barrier to methanol transport thereby reducing the rate of methanol crossing over the polymer membrane. The cell with the active area of 1.625 cm2 was assembled by sandwiching the MEA between two micro-fabricated Si wafers. Extensive cell polarization testing demonstrated a maximum power density of 50 mW/cm2 using 2 M methanol feed at 60 °C. When the cell was operated at room temperature, the maximum power density was shown to be about 16 mW/cm2 with both 2 and 4 M methanol feed. It was further found that the present μDMFC still produced reasonable performance under 8 M methanol solution at room temperature.  相似文献

In order to understand the origins of performance variations in unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs), bifunctional catalyst layers (BCLs) fabricated with two different methods, i.e., ink deposition on membrane or GDL, were designed in this paper. The performances of the two different methods were evaluated, and their reaction dynamics were measured by electrochemical impedance spectra. The different BCLs, caused by the different preparation processes, were found to influence the fuel cell performance. The cell potentials of the URFCs using platinum sprayed onto the gas diffusion layer (GDL) are above 0.100 V higher than those with platinum sprayed onto the membrane at 800 mA cm−2 in fuel cell (FC) mode. The mass transport resistances of the URFCs at different operation modes were also compared. It was proved that the platinum layer formed by applying platinum onto the GDL could prevent the cell from water flooding in FC mode. However, it was found that the cell performance changed slightly in water electrolysis mode with different BCLs. The electron conduction path was also found to be hindered by an IrO2 agglomerate, which led to a decrease in cell performance. The highest and lowest round-trip efficiencies of the URFC with different BCLs were 42.1% and 22.3%, respectively, at 800 mA cm−2.  相似文献

In this work, we studied the characteristic variations of catalyst supports caused by mechanical milling and their electrochemical application in fuel cells. Two different catalyst supports, carbon black (XC-72R) and K20 (mesoporous carbon), were crushed and dispersed by mechanical milling using a bead mill. The bead mill operated with 0.3 μm zirconia beads at the rate of 3500 rpm for 30 min. The secondary particle size of the crushed catalyst supports ranged from around 0.1 μm to 10 μm. The secondary particle size of the catalyst supports after crushing represents a decrease of approximately 10% compared with that of raw catalyst supports. To confirm the role of the catalyst supports in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), Pt and Ru were loaded onto these catalyst supports using an impregnation method. In the single cell test, Pt-Ru/XC-Bead and PtRu/K20-Bead showed power densities of 135 mW/cm2 and 144 mW/cm2 under air at 60 °C, respectively. The performance values of these catalysts, which were fabricated using reformed catalyst supports, were 10% to 20% higher than those of raw catalyst supports. As a result, the catalyst supports crushed by the bead mill helped to improve the electrochemical performance of the direct methanol fuel cell.  相似文献

The effect of carbon type, carbon loading and microporous layer structure in the microporous layer on the performance of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) at low temperature was investigated using electrochemical polarization techniques, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and other methods. Vulcan XC-72 carbon was found to be most suitable as a microporous layer for low temperature DMFC. Maximum fuel cell performance was obtained utilizing a microporous layer with carbon loading of 1.0 mg cm−2 when air was used as an oxidant. A membrane electrode assembly with 1.0 mg cm−2 Vulcan XC-72 carbon with 20 wt.% Teflon in the cathode and no microporous layer in the anode showed a maximum power density of 36.7 mW cm−2 at 35 °C under atmospheric pressure. The AC impedance study proved that a cell with a dissymmetrical microporous layer structure had lower internal resistance and mass transfer resistance, thus obtaining better performance.  相似文献

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) PTFE/PBI composite membranes doped with H3PO4 were fabricated to improve the performance of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC). The composite membranes were fabricated by immobilising polybenzimidazole (PBI) solution into a hydrophobic porous PTFE membrane. The mechanical strength of the membrane was good exhibiting a maximum load of 35.19 MPa. After doping with the phosphoric acid, the composite membrane had a larger proton conductivity than that of PBI doped with phosphoric acid. The PTFE/PBI membrane conductivity was greater than 0.3 S cm−1 at a relative humidity 8.4% and temperature of 180 °C with a 300% H3PO4 doping level. Use of the membrane in a fuel cell with oxygen, at 1 bar overpressure gave a peak power density of 1.2 W cm−2 at cell voltages >0.4 V and current densities of 3.0 A cm−2. The PTFE/PBI/H3PO4 composite membrane did not exhibit significant degradation after 50 h of intermittent operation at 150 °C. These results indicate that the composite membrane is a promising material for vehicles driven by high temperature PEMFCs.  相似文献

A novel micro planar fuel cell power supplier, in which a six‐cell PEM unitised regenerative fuel cell (URFC) stack is used as the power generator, was designed and fabricated. Six membrane electrode assemblies were prepared and integrated on one piece of membrane by spraying catalyst slurry on both sides of the membrane. Each cell was made by sandwiching a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) between two graphite monopolar plates and six cell units were mechanically fixed in two organic glass endplates. When the stack was operated in an electrolysis mode, hydrogen was generated from the splitting of water and stored using a hydrogen storage alloy; conversely, when the stack was operated in fuel cell mode, hydrogen was supplied by the hydrogen storage alloy and oxygen was supplied from air by self‐breathing of the cathode. At room temperature and standard atmospheric pressure, the open‐circuit voltage (OCV) of the system reached 4.9 V, the system could be discharged at a constant current density of 20 mA cm–2 for about 40 min, and the work voltage was ∼2.9 V. The system showed good stability for 10 charge–discharge cycles.  相似文献

An anode-supported tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a 15-μm thick YSZ electrolyte and an active area of 100 cm2 was successfully fabricated by co-firing process, and the cell performance was measured under both atmospheric and pressurized conditions. The experimental results showed that the cell performance was significantly improved under the pressurized condition. When the pressure was increased from 1 to 6 atm, the maximum power density increased from 135.0 to 159.0 mW cm−2 at 650 °C, and from 266.7 to 306.0 mW cm−2 at 800 °C. The maximum power density at 800 °C and 4 atm was decreased from 334.8 to 273.9 mW cm−2 when increasing the fuel utilization from 10% to 90%. Under the test condition of 70% fuel utilization, 800 °C and 4 atm, the cell could run stably at 0.7 V and 350 mA cm−2 for 50 h, almost without any performance loss.  相似文献

Before fabrication of dense yttria-stabilized zirconia films, several thin anode functional layers (AFL) were fabricated onto porous NiO/yttria-stabilized zirconia anode substrates using slurry spin coating. The effect of AFL thickness on gas impermeability and performance of a cell was investigated by studying the effect of AFL thickness on the open-circuit voltage, ohmic resistance, I-V characteristics and electrode overpotential of cells. The results of investigation indicated that as the AFL thickness increased, the gas impermeability of cells was generally improved and the ohmic resistance of cells was increased. The cell with a 5-μm-thick AFL exhibited an excellent cell performance, for example, a single cell with this AFL exhibited an output power of 2.63 W cm−2 at 800 °C when hydrogen was used as fuel and an oxygen was used as oxidant.  相似文献

Membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) were prepared using PtRu black and 60 wt.% carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) as their anode and cathode catalysts, respectively. The cathode catalyst layers were fabricated using various amounts of Pt (0.5 mg cm−2, 1.0 mg cm−2, 2.0 mg cm−2, and 3.0 mg cm−2). To study the effect of carbon support on performance, a MEA in which Pt black was used as the cathode catalyst was fabricated. In addition, the effect of methanol crossover on the Pt/C on the cathode side of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was investigated. The performance of the single cell that used Pt/C as the cathode catalyst was higher than single cell that used Pt black and this result was pronounced when highly concentrated methanol (above 2.0 M) was used as the fuel.  相似文献

Polarization losses of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells at 120 °C and reduced relative humidity (RH) were analyzed. Reduced RH affects membrane and electrode ionic resistance, catalytic activity and oxygen transport. For a cell made of Nafion® 112 membrane and electrodes that have 35 wt.% Nafion® and 0.3 mg/cm2 platinum supported on carbon, membrane resistance at 20%RH was 0.407 Ω cm2 and electrode resistance 0.203 Ω cm2, significantly higher than 0.092 and 0.041 Ω cm2 at 100%RH, respectively. In the kinetically controlled region, 20%RH resulted in 96 mV more cathode activation loss than 100%RH. Compared to 100%, 20%RH also produced significant oxygen transport loss across the ionomer film in the electrode, 105 mV at 600 mA/cm2. The significant increase in polarization losses at elevated temperature and reduced RH indicates the extreme importance of designing electrodes for high temperature PEM fuel cells since membrane development has always taken most emphasis.  相似文献

Cone-shaped tubular anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and two-cell-stack based on NiO-YSZ traditional anodes direct utilization methane as fuel were successfully developed in this study. The single cell exhibited maximum power densities of 1.255 W cm−2 for hydrogen and 1.099 W cm−2 for methane at 800 °C, respectively. A stability test of the single cell was performed with different constant current densities at 700 °C in methane. The results indicated that the single cell can be operated stable at high current density in methane. And EDX results showed that there is no measurable coking effect of operation in methane at relatively high current density.A two-cell-stack based on the above-mentioned SOFCs was fabricated and tested by direct utilization of methane. Its typical electrochemical performance was investigated. The two-cell-stack provided a maximum power output of about 3.5 W (350 mW cm−2 calculated using effective cathode area) by directly using methane at 800 °C. The stack experienced 20 h durability testing. The results demonstrated that the stack was kept at around 1 V (J = 0.05 A cm−2) at 700 °C. The stack presented basically stably during the whole test, and the performance of the stack is acceptable for application.  相似文献

A double-layer composite electrode based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ + Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (BSCF + SDC) and BSCF + SDC + Ag was investigated to be a promising cathode and also anode for the electrochemical oxygen generator based on samaria doped ceria electrolyte. The Ag particles in the second layer were not only the current collector but also the improver for the oxygen adsorption at the electrode. a.c. impedance results indicated that the electrode polarization resistance, as low as 0.0058 Ω cm2 was reached at 800 °C under air. In oxygen generator cell performance test, the electrode resistance dropped to half of the value at zero current density under an applied current density of 2.34 A cm−2 at 700 °C, and on the same conditions the oxygen generator cell was continual working for more than 900 min with a Faradic efficiency of ∼100%.  相似文献

A novel multiscale Pd-Ag catalyzed porous cathode for the magnesium-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell was prepared by electrodeposition of Pd onto Ag coated nickel foam surface from an aqueous solution of palladium chloride. The structure, morphology and composition of the electrodeposited catalyst layer were characterized using SEM, EDS and XPS analysis. Magnesium-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell tests with the Pd-Ag deposited cathode were carried out and compared with the Ag-deposited electrode. The effects of temperature, H2O2 flow rate and H2O2 concentration on cell performance were investigated, and the electrode stability test was carried out. The Pd-Ag deposited electrode showed higher catalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide than that of the Ag-deposited Ni foam cathode, and gave much improved fuel cell performance. The magnesium-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with nanostructured Pd-Ag coated nickel foam cathode presented a maximum power density of 140 mW cm−2, but the Mg-H2O2 fuel cell with Ag coated Ni foam cathode gave only 110 mW cm−2 under the same operation condition.  相似文献
