The estimation of chromatic diversity of natural images is commonly quantified through the computation of the number of discernible colors and has received much attention because of the different implications it has. However, the relationship between that number and the number of colors that really attracts the attention from an observer is still not clear and has been given little attention. New concepts about salient discernible colors‐the salient chromatic diversity of images‐ and remarkable salient colors‐connected colors in the same salient image area‐are introduced as opposed to the classical number of discernible object colors, which is usually evaluated for the global image without differentiating between probable attended and non‐attended image regions. We have used different well‐known saliency models to locate the salient regions in the scenes and have heuristically studied the extent to which those models preserve the chromatic diversity of natural images. Based on a bottom‐up approach, a reduction of around 40%‐55% in the number of discernible colors were obtained, and not all saliency algorithms preserved a uniform sampling of the original color gamut. Thus, our results suggests that particularly the graph‐based visual saliency model got good low dissimilarity values in comparison with other approaches that put emphasis solely on color as the main low‐level feature. Furthermore, we have introduced a quantification scheme of the average number of remarkable salient colors appearing in the images, and have proved how the heuristic‐based analysis of salient image areas can be used to create segmented images automatically according to their salient chromatic diversity. 相似文献

Chroma‐step perception and its corresponding color difference in the same hue direction are the different attributes on color perception. The differences between them are different for different hues. Hue‐appearance step and its corresponding color difference along the same hue circle also have completely different concepts. The causes of the above two facts are clarified. The information based on various experiments and theoretical considerations are given for supporting the facts. In addition, it is clarified that the relationship on color‐appearance step and color difference has completely different characteristics between the quantitative (chroma) and the qualitative (hue) attributes of object colors. The common attributes of color are distinguishable by their symmetries. Hue, saturation, chroma, chromaticness, whiteness, and blackness symmetries are discussed. Symmetries are generally not sufficient to specify unique formulas for color attributes, nor are they an endorsement of color model accuracy. However, symmetries do provide constraints for valid formulae, which are useful even when symmetries are only approximate. They also provide an alternate conceptual understanding of color attributes that differs from standard color science definitions. Symmetries provide a simplified framework for calculating groups of colors that share color attributes. Color models examined include the Hunt Model, a simple color model (SCM), various CIE color spaces, and IPT. This research shows the effect of simultaneous contrast on a design solution that generates it, and it also shows how its manifestation affects the shift of perception attributes of the observer's color. In the conducted research, 55 subjects had to harmonize the primary stimuli from the reproduction obtained with the help of digital printing technology, with the primary stimuli presented on two computer screens. As a visual harmonization technique, simultaneous binocular harmonization was used. The primary stimuli were made achromatic, with a 50% Raster Tone value (RTV), and are surrounded by achromatic secondary stimuli whose values increase in steps from 10% RTV up to 100% RTV. A shift in the perceptual attributes of color has been shown with the help of the CIEDE2000 system. Using ANOVA with repeated-measures and Fisher's post hoc analysis, statistically significant differences were found between the perceived means of shift in the ΔC00 chroma and ΔL00 lightness on defined samples on both computer screens, while in the case of the ΔH00 hue, no statistically significant differences were observed. The research also determined colorimetric differences in the ΔE00 color difference. Moreover, the student's t test was used to determine that the effect is stronger when manifested on the Lenovo computer than on the Asus computer screen (P < .05). 相似文献

Despite the ubiquity of icons in computing and mobile devices, the role of color in icon‐based interface design has yet to be fully elucidated. This study began by conducting a card sorting experiment to determine the importance of color in the perception of commercial icons, as opposed to the simpler icons typically used in a laboratory setting. The study also sought to ascertain the importance of color when considered alongside other visual attributes in the general perception of icons. Participants were then asked to answer preset questions as a means of determining the relationship between the known color properties (e.g., hue, saturation, and brightness) of icons and their functional meaning, effectiveness in conveying meaning, and visual attractiveness. Finally, the speed and accuracy was assessed by which participants recognized well‐known icons rendered using familiar and unfamiliar colors. The empirical results identified color as an important attribute in the process of sorting icons, far exceeding other visual attributes including shape, complexity, pictorial style, and orientation. Nonetheless, it appears that color is not necessarily dominant in the initial stages of sorting. The results also revealed that color is closely related to visual attractiveness but largely irrelevant to effectiveness in the conveyance of meaning. The study also confirmed that correct color information is crucial to naming accuracy and the speed at which icons are recognized. Finally, the results indicate that icons lacking a unique symbol as a cue to recognition rely heavily on their signature color for identification. This study opens up several avenues of research by which to enhance our understanding of the functional role of color in icon perception. 相似文献

Color‐vision deficiency is a relatively common genetic condition, which often leads to the obstruction of necessary information in colored images. It is important to minimize such inconvenient effects in communication using colored images from a universal design perspective. The universal design principle stipulates that all environments and products should be usable by all people, regardless of age, physical attributes, and ability. This article proposes a method to detect color combinations in a given image that would confuse color dichromats, and suggests a way in which to modify them to make the image easily distinguishable for both normal and dichromatic observers. Confusing color combinations were detected based on a color‐difference calculation using simulations of how the color would appear to dichromats. The confusing colors were then modified based on the minimization of an evaluation function, which was defined as the sum of the degree of confusion and the degree of color change from the original image. Several colored images obtained by the proposed method were compared with the originals by red–green dichromatic observers who judged them to be clearer, thereby confirming that the proposed method was effective for color rendering for universal design. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Due to the richness of landscape color, together with the complexity of the environment, the objective measurement of landscape color has become very difficult. The evaluation and design of landscape color has depended on the perceptual experience acquired by the designer's eyes over a long period of time without objective and scientific basis in quantitative aspects. Therefore, development of a protocol for evalutation of environmental color change based on instrumental measurement in order to realize the quantitative expression of landscape color and to describe objectively the visual effect of the landscape color composition objectively, is a crucial factor in the landscape design process. This report takes the quantitative analysis of the color of the Ming Dynasty City Wall in Nanjing as a case study. Through the classification of color measurements, the on‐site investigation and sampling analysis in the landscape field, and the categorization and selection of the environment variables that influence the visual effect of color, this article illustrates the value and significance of the quantitative expression in the landscape color research to make landscape color effect more scientific, objective, and effective. 相似文献

Account information for over 1 million Twitter users was downloaded and analyzed to determine color preference. Blues were found to be the most preferred color, whereas greens were least preferred. Distinct gender‐specific differences were found. Males preferred blues to a greater extent than females, whereas females preferred magentas to a much greater extent than males. Males preferred darker colors to a greater extent than women. The main aim of this study is to examine the effect of area on color harmony in simulated interior spaces. The secondary aim of the study is to investigate how the term color harmony is defined and the link between color harmony and related terms used to define it. These terms can explain why a color scheme is evaluated as harmonious. Four sets of three-color combinations created by using the hues red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and orange were studied in a simulated office interior emphasizing different proportional use of each color. Firstly, participants evaluated harmony content of the images. Secondly, they evaluated each image regarding the terms related to color harmony. Findings indicated that area had an effect on color harmony for two of the color combinations (warm & cool). However, there were no strong but rather moderate and weak correlations between color harmony and the terms. 相似文献

Color combination criteria are said to entail an affective response in interior design. We investigated the color combination criteria that orient the preference of current observers, after Le Corbusier's 1931 Salubra keyboards. We explored the similarity/contrast in Natural Color System (NCS) hue, blackness, and chromaticness in 312 combinations with four colors, two backgrounds and two accent colors, coming from 43 individual colors, on the walls of a simulated interior of a bedroom from the Swiss Pavilion (Le Corbusier, 1930-1931). Participants were 644 students of architecture and interior design in Western Europe and Near East, who evaluated with a Likert scale their preference for virtual images via an online survey. Results indicate that the most preferred color combinations are those with hues closer in the color wheel, being the similarity between hues in the backgrounds more important than in the accent colors, and with NCS B30G to G as the most preferred hues. Observers preferred color compositions with blackness under 10% and similar blackness between the two background colors, together with a certain blackness contrast between these background colors and the two color accents. Similarly, observers liked color compositions with low chromaticness and low chromaticness difference among the four colors of the composition. 相似文献

With the development of our modern information society, digital products have become integrated into daily life. Research on the color ergonomics of user interfaces is a pressing issue. However, color‐vision‐deficient individuals (CVDIs), who account for 4.25% of the population, must use interfaces designed for individuals with normal color vision; the demands of CVDIs have not been sufficiently addressed. In this article, we investigate color associations in the color ergonomics of user interface interaction in a manner that aims both to improve interaction efficiency and to meet the psychological needs of CVDIs. First, we study color physiological cognitions in the color interactions of user interfaces for red‐green dichromats (RGDs) to determine the single‐color, two‐color, and three‐color combinations with high discrimination for a later experiment. Second, we explore the psychological–cognition relationships of colors in user‐interface interactions for RGDs. In an experiment involving 10 pairs of association semantemes and corresponding colors, the experimental results show that RGDs have different color cognitions caused by specific visual color expressions and unconscious environmental influences. Therefore, this article argues that RGD design should consider not only the habitual colors of solidified cognitions but also instinctive color associations. Finally, based on the results of previous experiments, we apply association color to the new interface design of computer security software (360 Total Security) for RGDs. Experimental results indicate that the application of color association in our new design can improve both interaction efficiency and CVDI user experience. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study was performed to determine significant light wavelengths to improve color discrimination ability of subjects with deutan. We conducted both the Ishihara test and the Farnsworth Panel D‐15 test for subjects with deutan and normal color vision. Seven different LED lights from 450 to 660 nm and an additional D65 white lamp were utilized to change the lighting conditions, including the wavelength and intensity. The results of the Ishihara test and D‐15 test showed that color identification of deutans was markedly improved with the longer wavelength LEDs regardless of the intensity of the additional D65 lamp. Notably, the error rates of deutans in the Ishihara test were <25% for LED wavelengths of 630 and 660 nm. In the case of subjects with normal color vision, the D65 lamp abolished the errors in the Ishihara test, regardless of the LED wavelength. Addition of the D65 lamp also decreased the number of crossings in the D‐15 test. These results suggested that illumination by LED light with longer wavelengths, such as 630 and 660 nm, may provide deutans with greater red‐green discrimination ability in both the Ishihara test and the Farnsworth Panel D‐15 test. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Canonical Biplot method is used to determine the magnitude of the effects on the Δ chromatic coordinates (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*) and the parameter ΔE*, where (ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*) are the difference in the values of the sample after each aging cycle and the value of the untreated sample and ΔE* = [(ΔL*)2 + (Δa*)2 + (Δb*)2]1/2. We performed a study of the changes in color produced by two types of artificial aging procedures on four varieties of siliceous conglomerates from Zamora (Spain) that have traditionally been used in construction and later renovations in historical buildings in the zone. To accomplish this, 25 cycles of the following types of accelerated artificial aging were carried out: (a) freezing/thawing and cooling/heating (T1) and (b) combined freezing/thawing and cooling/heating + salt (phosphates) crystallization (T2). The results of the statistical study applied (Canonical Biplot) allowed us to differentiate the magnitude effect on the color of the surface brought about by T1 as compared with T2. These effects (p < 0.05) were observed in all but one (ochre conglomerate) of the varieties, but mainly in the variable governing red hue (Δa*) and yellow hue (Δb*). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new methodology has been applied to the experimental data obtained about a white siliceous conglomerate from Zamora (Spain), which was subjected to 25 cycles of 2 types of aging [freezing/thawing with cooling/heating (T1) and freezing/thawing with cooling/heating + phosphate crystallization (T2)]. Our model (multivariate Gaussian subspatial regression) allows the behavior and prediction of the chromatic coordinates (L*,a*,b*), including more than 25 cycles, to be analyzed. This model is much more flexible than classical models as it allows multiple variable combinations to be predicted in a dynamic way. The final result showed that the conglomerate experiences darkening, yellowing, and reddening, as the number of cycles increase and that the darkening is much less pronounced in T2 due to phosphate crystallization. 相似文献
